Mall Road and The Ridge: Shimla's Colonial Heart
The 1.3-kilometer pedestrian Mall Road is the organizing spine of Shimla. Christ Church at the eastern end of The Ridge is the most recognizable building, a neo-Gothic structure from 1857 still holding services. Scandal Point at the western junction is where the old British officers' stories were supposedly exchanged.
Hotel Combermere and Clarkes Hotel both sit on or just off Mall Road. Clarkes, operating since 1898, has the better historic atmosphere with wood-paneled corridors that feel like they have not been extensively renovated, which is either atmospheric or uncomfortable depending on your perspective.
Evening on Mall Road after 5pm, when the day-trippers thin out, is the best time to walk it. The mountain air cools, the Himalayan peaks catch the last light, and the promenade has a quality of easy elegance that justifies the hill station's old reputation.
Jakhu Hill: Temple, Monkeys, and Views
Jakhu Hill rises 300 meters above Mall Road and is topped with a Hanuman temple and a 33-meter statue that is visible from across the city. The walk up through oak forest from the Ridge takes 45-60 minutes and passes dozens of rhesus macaques who have no fear of humans.
The monkey situation is not a joke. They are aggressive and persistent. Do not carry visible food. Strap your bag shut. Remove sunglasses before getting close to groups of them. Walking sticks are available for rent at the base for 50 rupees and work as a deterrent.
The views from Jakhu summit on a clear morning stretch to the Himalayan snow peaks in the distance, including Shrikhand Mahadev if conditions are ideal. Come early before the haze builds.
Mashobra: Forest Luxury 13km from Town
Mashobra is a small village in deep deodar cedar forest 13 kilometers from Shimla on the road toward Kufri. Wildflower Hall, the Oberoi property here, is the best hotel in the wider Shimla area by a significant margin. At 8,250 feet, it is cooler than Shimla town even in the peak of summer.
