Montefila, a place I truly loved, offers such a welcoming vibe. It’s a casual spot, perfect for unwinding after exploring. You’ll find it about 2 kilometers from the shimmering Adriatic Sea’s white-sand beaches. The M-2.4 highway is just a kilometer away, making travel easy. Plus, the historic Ancient Greek Ulcinj Castle is a mere 4 kilometers from your doorstep. Inside, the rooms are a delight. Mine had a comfy sitting area and a balcony, ideal for morning coffee. For families, the rooms are spacious, even offering minifridges and separate living areas with sofabeds – a real bonus. The apartments truly impress with their open-plan kitchenettes and ample living and dining spaces. Breakfast here is a must; it’s a great way to start your day. What I adored were the pools. You have both an indoor and an outdoor option, complete with a special area for kids. The hot tub and sauna were fantastic for pure relaxation. And that laid-back bar and restaurant with its terrace? Simply charming for an evening drink.

Old Town: Ottomans and Sea Walls
Ulcinj's Old Town sits on a promontory above the Adriatic, enclosed by fortified walls built on earlier Venetian and Ottoman foundations. The main gate leads into a dense cluster of houses, mosques, and the former pirates' quarter. Hotel Albatros, Hotel Palata Venezia, and Citadel Hotel all sit inside or directly against the walls.
The main viewpoint is from the citadel's western ramparts where the setting sun over the Adriatic gives one of the most dramatic evening views in Montenegro. The restaurant Palata Venezia terrace, built into the walls with the sea directly below, is worth a dinner reservation even if you are not staying there.
Long Beach (Velika Plaza): The 12-Kilometer Sand
Long Beach is the defining feature of Ulcinj. It stretches 12 kilometers south from the edge of town to Ada Bojana island on the Albanian border. The northern section near town has beach clubs, sun-beds, and hotels like Villa Regia, Hotel Otrant, and Hotel Mediteran. The further south you go, the less developed and more natural the beach becomes.
The middle section around 4-5 kilometers from town is the sweet spot: some organization, but not the beach club density of the northern strip. The southern section approaching Ada Bojana is naturist and almost empty outside August. The water quality is good throughout though slightly brown near the Bojana river mouth.
Valdanos Bay: The Olive Grove Alternative
Valdanos is a sheltered bay 5 kilometers north of Ulcinj, accessible by car or taxi in 10 minutes. The Hotel Valdanos sits inside a grove of centuries-old olive trees that run down to a quiet pebble beach. The water is calm and clear, protected from the sea wind by the surrounding hills.
The beach at Valdanos is far less crowded than both Long Beach and Town Beach. No beach club infrastructure, no sun-bed rental, just the olive trees and the sea. The lack of amenities is the point. A taxi back to town costs 8-10 euros.
Kitesurfing and Wind Sports on Long Beach
Long Beach is the best kitesurfing location in Montenegro. The Bora wind (northeast, offshore) and the Jugo (south, onshore) create consistent conditions from June through September. The kitesurfing schools cluster at the northern end of Long Beach near the Ada Bojana road junction.
Beginners can learn in 3-5 days with the right school. Equipment rental costs approximately $60-80 per day for a full kite setup. The flat shallow water at the Long Beach northern section is the best learning environment. More experienced kiters go to the Ada Bojana southern section for better wind consistency.
Eating in Ulcinj Without Tourist Prices
The Albanian cultural influence means the food in Ulcinj is genuinely different from Budva. Grilled meats and Albanian-style dishes appear on menus alongside seafood. The Saturday market near the Old Town bazaar has excellent burek (pastry), fresh produce, and local cheese from $1-3 per item.
The best seafood is at the Ada Bojana river island restaurants (20 min drive) where the locally caught bleak fish (koran) is the specialty. In town, the restaurants inside the Old Town walls charge less than the promenade tourist spots. Restaurant Citadela in the Old Town is consistently reliable for honest fish and meat dishes.
Day Trips from Ulcinj
Shkoder in Albania is 65 kilometers south via the Muriqan border crossing. The drive takes 1 hour. Shkoder's Rozafa Castle and the lake views are undervisited and impressive. Albanian prices are significantly lower than Montenegro.
Lake Skadar National Park is 30 kilometers north, the largest lake in the Balkans with boat tours for birding (pelicans and cormorants breed here). Budva and the Budva Riviera are 80 kilometers north for the main Montenegro coast experience. Bar is 30 kilometers north and has the only functioning rail connection to Belgrade.

July and August bring Serbian, Kosovar, and Albanian visitors in significant numbers. Long Beach is crowded, particularly the northern section. Citadel Hotel and Palata Venezia fill months ahead. The evenings and sea temperature are excellent. Kitesurfing conditions are good throughout July and August.
June
June is the best month for Ulcinj. Sea temperature reaches 21-22C, Long Beach is uncrowded, and prices are 25-35% below August. The Old Town atmosphere is relaxed. Evening promenade is pleasant. Book 3-4 weeks ahead for Citadel Hotel and Palata Venezia, which fill quickly for June.
September
September is increasingly popular. Sea stays at 24C through early October. Crowds thin sharply after the first week. Prices drop 30-45% from August. The kitesurfing season continues. Long Beach is genuinely pleasant with space to lay out without crowds. Evening temperatures are warm through September.
Shoulder (Oct-May)
October through May sees Ulcinj largely closed to tourists. The Old Town is atmospheric in October and November with empty streets and golden light. The coast is dramatic in winter. Hotels that open year-round offer lowest rates. Not for beach stays but interesting for photography and off-season atmosphere.

Ada Bojana is worth the 20-minute drive
Ada Bojana river island at the southern end of Long Beach has exceptional seafood restaurants using fresh local catch. The koran (bleak) fish is the regional specialty. The naturist beach section on the river side is the most undeveloped and serene part of the entire Long Beach area. A taxi from town costs 15-20 euros return.

The Saturday morning market near the Old Town bazaar runs from 6am and has fresh Albanian-influenced produce, burek (filo pastry with meat or cheese) from $1-2, local kajmak (cream cheese), and freshly caught fish from the Bojana River. It is genuinely authentic and priced for locals.
Ulcinj is the best base for an Albania day trip in Montenegro
The Albanian border at Muriqan is 15 kilometers south. Shkoder in Albania is 50 kilometers from the border. Most tourists in Montenegro do not make this trip and it is one of the more interesting additions to a Bay of Kotor and Budva itinerary. Shkoder's Rozafa Castle, the lake, and the old bazaar are worth a half-day. Albanian prices are 30-40% lower than Montenegro.

The kitesurfing schools on Long Beach near the Ada Bojana junction fill their lesson slots in July and August. Book 1 week ahead via direct contact with the schools.
