City Center on Nørvøya is the answer for most first-timers. You're walking distance from the Brosundet Canal, the 418-step climb up Aksla to the viewpoint, Kongens Gate's Art Nouveau facades, and the fish stalls at Skansen. Everything worth doing in Ålesund is within 15 minutes on foot from here.
Book on or within 2 blocks of Apotekergata or Kongens Gate for the best access. The Comfort Hotel and Scandic are both solid mid-range picks in this zone. If budget is the priority, Ålesund Vandrerhjem in Borgundgavlen works. just know you're a 15-minute bus ride from the action, not walking distance.

If you want to go further, Hotel Union Øye in Norangsfjord is a 2-hour drive from Ålesund but operates on a different level entirely. Kaiser Wilhelm II slept here.
