Visayas island-hopping itinerary: 10 days
Days 1-3: Cebu. Fly into Mactan-Cebu International. Day 1: Cebu City (Zubuchon lechon, Tops Lookout sunset). Day 2: drive south to Moalboal (3 hours). Sardine run snorkeling, Kawasan Falls canyoneering. Day 3: Oslob whale sharks at 6am, then drive to Liloan port for the Bohol ferry.
Days 4-6: Bohol. Ferry from Cebu to Tagbilaran (2 hours, PHP 800). Day 4: Chocolate Hills, tarsier sanctuary in Corella (PHP 100), Loboc River cruise (PHP 550 with lunch). Day 5: Panglao beaches (Alona Beach, Dumaluan Beach). Balicasag Island diving or snorkeling (PHP 1,500 day trip). Day 6: relax or kayak on the Abatan River.
Days 7-10: Boracay. Fly Tagbilaran to Caticlan (via Cebu, or direct on some days). White Beach for 2 days. Puka Shell Beach for a quieter afternoon. Island-hopping boat tour (PHP 1,500, visits 3 snorkel spots). Sunset sailing on a paraw (PHP 500). Fly Caticlan back to Manila or Cebu.
Diving the Visayas: site by site
Moalboal sardine run: millions of sardines form a swirling ball 10 meters from shore. Snorkel or dive, both work. Also sea turtles on the house reef at Panagsama Beach. Two-tank dive: PHP 2,500 ($45). Best visibility: March-May.
Apo Island (30 min boat from Dumaguete, Negros): healthy hard coral, guaranteed sea turtles, and occasional reef sharks. Marine sanctuary entry PHP 300. Two-tank dive: PHP 3,000. Stay overnight at the basic lodges on the island for early morning dives before day trippers arrive.
Balicasag Island (45 min from Panglao, Bohol): famous wall dive drops to 60+ meters. Schools of jacks, barracuda, and sometimes whale sharks in deeper water. Snorkeling the marine sanctuary costs PHP 500 including gear. Two-tank dive: PHP 3,500. Go weekday mornings to avoid the snorkeling crowds.
Cebu south coast: Moalboal to Oslob
The south coast of Cebu is the adventure corridor. Moalboal (3 hours from Cebu City) is the base for diving, snorkeling, and Kawasan Falls. Stay at the Panagsama Beach guesthouses from PHP 1,200/night.
Kawasan Falls canyoneering starts upstream and ends at the falls. 4 hours, 5-6 cliff jumps (3-15m), swimming through turquoise canyons. PHP 1,500-2,500 per person with guide. Start early (7am) to avoid afternoon crowds.
Oslob whale sharks are 1.5 hours south of Moalboal. Sessions run 5am-12pm. Arrive by 5:30am to be in the first group. PHP 1,000 per person for 30 minutes in the water. Controversial (they are fed to stay) but undeniably spectacular. Combine with Tumalog Falls (10 min away, free) afterward.
Bohol beyond the Chocolate Hills
Everyone does the Chocolate Hills. They are photogenic but the viewpoint takes 20 minutes. Spend the rest of your Bohol time on things most tourists miss.
Anda Beach on the east coast is Bohol s best beach. White sand, warm springs nearby, and zero crowds compared to Panglao. The cave pools at Cabagnow Cave Pool are surreal (PHP 30 entry). It is a 2.5-hour drive from Tagbilaran but worth it for a day trip.
The Abatan River firefly watching tour is magical after dark. Thousands of fireflies light up mangrove trees like Christmas. PHP 700 per person, 1.5 hours, departs from Abatan village at 6:30pm. Less known than the Loboc River cruise but better.
Budget backpacking the Visayas
The Visayas are one of the cheapest tropical destinations in the world. A comfortable backpacker budget is PHP 2,500-3,500/day ($45-64) including accommodation, food, transport, and one activity.
Stay in fan rooms and dorms (PHP 500-800/night). Eat at carinderias (local eateries) for PHP 60-80 per meal. Take public ferries instead of fast ferries (half the price, slower). Habal-habal motorcycles cost PHP 10-50 for short rides.
Biggest savings: skip Boracay (everything costs 2x the rest of the Visayas). Stay in Moalboal instead for similar beach quality at half the price. Cook at guesthouses with kitchens. Buy fruit at local markets (mangoes PHP 40/kg in season). Siquijor is the cheapest island with the best quality of life.
Siquijor: the mystic island
Siquijor is the Visayas best-kept secret. A small island (20 km across) south of Bohol with empty beaches, cliff jumping at Salagdoong Beach (free), and a reputation for mystical healing.
