Phi Phi Hotel
Sitting right in Ton Sai Village, this no-frills hotel puts you in the center of Koh Phi Phi Don without the resort price tag. Rooms are basic but air-conditioned and kept reasonably clean. The location means noise from bars carries in on weekend nights, so light sleepers should ask for a room facing the inner courtyard. The ferry pier is a three-minute walk, making island-hopping day trips very easy. Good enough for a two-night base before moving on.

Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway
The Mercure sits on White Sand Beach, the longest and most developed stretch on Koh Chang's west coast. Rooms are well-maintained and the garden pool area is genuinely relaxing. Service is consistent thanks to the Accor chain standards, which makes it a reliable choice in a destination where quality varies widely. The beach here is good for swimming during high season from November to April. Rent a scooter from the front desk to explore the island's southern waterfalls.

The Scent Hotel
The Scent is a small boutique property tucked into the Bophut Fisherman's Village area, away from the louder Chaweng scene. The design blends Thai craftsmanship with clean modern lines and the pool is genuinely beautiful. There are only 26 rooms, so it feels personal rather than corporate. The Fisherman's Village Walking Street market is three minutes on foot every Friday night. This is a better choice for couples than for families with young children.

Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort
Perched on the cliff between Ao Nang and Pai Plong Beach, this resort offers limestone karst views that are genuinely hard to beat. The infinity pool looks directly out at the sea and the surrounding rock formations. Most rooms have private balconies and the superior sea-view category is worth the upgrade. Longtail boats to Railay Beach depart just below the property. The Ao Nang dining strip is a ten-minute walk along the beachfront road.

Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort
Located on Klong Muang Beach, one of Krabi's quieter and cleaner stretches of sand, this Dusit property consistently earns high marks across booking platforms. The pool villas are spacious and the beach here has far fewer longtail boats and vendors than Ao Nang. Dining options on-site are pricey but the quality is reliably high. It is about 25 kilometers from Krabi Town, so you will need a car or resort shuttle to explore. Families and couples both find it works well.

All accommodations are standalone villas and the beach is kept exclusively for resort guests. The short speedboat transfer from Ban Phe pier adds to the sense of arrival. It is only a three-hour drive from Bangkok, making it genuinely practical for a long weekend escape. The snorkeling directly off the beach is among the best on Koh Samet.

Amanpuri
Amanpuri opened in 1988 and essentially set the standard for ultra-luxury resort design in Southeast Asia. The pavilions and villas are spread across a coconut palm hillside above Pansea Beach on Phuket's northwest coast. Service ratios are among the highest in the industry and almost every need is anticipated before you ask. The private beach is calm and clean, and the fleet of private yachts and speedboats can be arranged for day trips. Rates are extraordinary but so is every detail of the experience.

Nên ở đâu tại Thai Islands
Khu vực bạn chọn quan trọng hơn bản thân khách sạn.
Koh Samui: Which Beach for Which Traveler
Chaweng is Koh Samui's main beach: 7km of white sand, bars, restaurants, and 24-hour activity. Suitable for travelers who want convenience and nightlife. Lub d Hostel and mid-range hotels cluster here. The beach itself gets crowded and vendors are persistent. Good energy, not particularly relaxing.
Bophut (Fisherman's Village) is the low-key alternative: boutique guesthouses, European-run restaurants, a Saturday Walking Street with good street food. 20 minutes from the airport by taxi. The Scent Hotel sits at the quieter northern end, good value at $120-150.
Choeng Mon in the northeast is the quietest of Samui's main beaches: shallow, calm water ideal for swimming, far fewer vendors, a handful of small resorts. Suitable for couples and older travelers. Taxis to Chaweng are $8-10.
Phuket Beyond Patong
Kamala Beach is 8km north of Patong and worth the extra effort. A smaller bay, predominantly Thai families on the south end, upscale resorts on the north. No go-go bars, no jet ski operations on the sand. Prices at Kamala resorts run 20-30% less than equivalent Patong hotels.
Kata Noi (Little Kata) at the south of Phuket island is the most photogenic beach: a small horseshoe bay with clear water, one public beach, and a handful of resorts on the hillside. No nightlife, no 7-Elevens every 50 meters. The tradeoff is getting here: taxi from Phuket Town takes 45 minutes.
Amanpuri at Cape Yamu is Thailand's most exclusive resort and genuinely separate from the Phuket tourist economy. Forty pavilions on a private beach, speedboat service to Phi Phi, rates from $1,100. For everyone else: Surin Beach is the affordable version of upscale Phuket, good restaurants, calmer atmosphere, 15 minutes from Kamala.
Koh Chang: The Underrated Alternative
Koh Chang is Thailand's second largest island, 500km from Bangkok near the Cambodian border. It doesn't have the international airport infrastructure of Samui or Phuket, which is exactly why it's better. Fewer tourists means the beaches are cleaner and locals haven't been worn down by decades of overcrowding.
White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is the longest and most developed beach: resorts, restaurants, and the best infrastructure on the island. Lonely Beach at the south end is the backpacker enclave. Khlong Phrao in the middle is the quieter family beach. Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway sits between Khlong Phrao and Kai Bae, good value at $105.
Getting there: Bangkok's Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) to Trat (4.5 hours), then ferry 30 minutes. Or fly to Trat (1 hour from Bangkok, limited schedules). Plan for half a day of travel each way.
Krabi and Railay: The Dramatic Andaman Option
Krabi province has Thailand's most dramatic scenery: karst limestone pillars rising from the sea, caves with ancient murals, and Railay Beach accessible only by boat. Ao Nang is the main tourist town, functional rather than beautiful, good for basing day trips. Stay at Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort ($130) for pool access without the Ao Nang town noise.
For Railay Beach: stay there directly if you want the most beautiful setting. The few resorts are expensive for what you get ($200-350 for mid-range), but the beach is worth the premium over staying in Ao Nang and commuting by longtail. Dusit Thani Krabi is the best value upscale option, not directly on Railay but on a beautiful stretch of Tubkaek Beach.
Day trips from Krabi/Ao Nang: four islands snorkeling tour ($35), Tiger Cave Temple (free, 1,237 steps to the summit), kayaking through sea caves at Bor Thor ($45). For Phi Phi day trip: ferries from Ao Nang Pier take 1.5 hours.
Island Hopping: Making the Connections Work
The most popular combination: Koh Samui + Koh Tao (for diving) + Koh Phangan (for the Full Moon Party or just the beaches). Take the catamaran between all three islands ($25-35 per hop). Schedules align with twice-daily departures. Three islands in 7 nights works well.
For the Andaman: Phuket + Krabi + Koh Phi Phi covers the main circuit. Fly into Phuket, take a day trip to Phi Phi from Phuket's Rassada Pier, bus or taxi to Krabi for 2-3 nights, fly home from Krabi airport. Koh Lanta (south of Krabi) adds another 2 days for the quiet beach experience.
Don't try to combine Gulf and Andaman in under 10 days. They're on opposite coasts and require domestic flights ($60-100) or a 7-hour bus. Spending time on transit kills the beach budget.
Budget Island Strategy: Under $80 Per Night
Koh Phi Phi Don has the best budget options relative to scenery. Phi Phi Hotel sits on the central isthmus for $60, walking distance to both bays. The tradeoff: no air conditioning in cheaper rooms, and the thin isthmus means noise from other bays. Walk 15 minutes north to Laem Tong Beach for quieter budget guesthouses.
Lub d Koh Samui Chaweng Beach runs $45-60 per dorm bed or $80-90 private rooms. It's a hostel but with pool, bar, and social events. Positioned on Chaweng Beach's northern end away from the worst nightlife noise. For backpackers, this beats any cheap guesthouse on the same stretch.
Timing for budget: May and June on the Gulf islands, April on the Andaman side. Rates are 40-50% of peak. The monsoon is intermittent, not continuous. Many days are sunny until 3pm storms that clear by evening.
Khu vực khách sạn tốt nhất của Thai Islands
Thailand's islands divide into three main groups: the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) on the east coast, the Andaman islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) on the west, and the Eastern Gulf (Koh Chang near the Cambodian border). Each group has distinct character, beach quality, and price range. The two sides don't share weather patterns.

The Gulf of Thailand islands sit 600km southeast of Bangkok. Koh Samui has an international airport (UTH) with direct flights from Bangkok ($50-80 one way). Koh Phangan is 30 minutes by ferry from Samui. Koh Chang is a separate journey, 5 hours from Bangkok by bus and ferry.
Koh Samui caters to mid-range and luxury travelers. The Scent Hotel ($120) and Six Senses Samui ($650) represent the range well. Koh Phangan has the Full Moon Party infrastructure plus quieter beaches on the west and north. Koh Chang is the family and nature traveler option with jungle national park covering 70% of the island.
Monsoon season (May-October): the Gulf side is drier than the Andaman during these months, but still expect rain. Hotels discount 30-40% and beaches are emptier.

Phuket International Airport (HKT) receives direct international flights from 30+ countries, making this the most accessible Thai island group. Krabi Airport (KBV) is 30 minutes from Ao Nang town. Both airports have budget airlines from Bangkok ($40-80 one way).
Phuket covers the full budget-to-ultra-luxury spectrum. Patong Beach is the tourist epicenter, best avoided. Kamala, Surin, and Kata Noi are the quality alternatives within the same island. Amanpuri at $1,100 sets the ceiling. Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort at $130 is the good value benchmark.
Koh Phi Phi is the day-trip jewel but worth staying overnight once crowds clear. Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort at Tubkaek delivers upscale Andaman experience at 40% below equivalent Phuket pricing.

Koh Tao sits 2 hours by speedboat from Koh Samui. No airport, reached by ferry only. This keeps it smaller and more budget-oriented than Samui. It's primarily known as a scuba training hub: 100+ dive schools, PADI Open Water from $350, and dives on reefs at 5-30 meters.
The Similan Islands are the Andaman's top dive destination, accessible only by liveaboard ($300-500 for 3-4 nights) or day trip from Khao Lak ($150). Visibility reaches 30+ meters on the best days. No accommodation on the islands themselves.
Non-divers find Koh Tao charming but limited: smaller beaches than Samui, less developed infrastructure. Three to four days is the right amount. Budget guesthouses run $25-60.

beach
Railay Beach (Krabi) wins for sheer scenery: limestone cliffs, emerald water, no road access. Kata Noi (Phuket south) for the clearest water without the crowds. Choeng Mon (Koh Samui northeast) for the calmest swimming. Koh Phi Phi for the iconic lagoon backdrop.
romantic
Six Senses Samui on the rocky headland at Choeng Mon has pool villas with private sea views at $400-700. For a fraction of that, The Scent Hotel at Bophut ($120) is boutique and intimate. Sunset drinks at the Fisherman's Village pier, dinner at a candlelit beachfront restaurant for $30 total.
budget
Lub d Koh Samui at $45 per night in dorms or Phi Phi Hotel at $60 for a private room. Street food meals at $2-3, beer at $1.50. Koh Tao dive certification is cheaper than anywhere outside Asia. A 7-night Thai island trip runs $500-700 all-in from Bangkok including transport.
family
Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway is the family champion: calm west-coast waters, jungle trails, kids club, and a setting away from nightlife infrastructure. Koh Chang's national park covers 70% of the island, good for waterfall day trips. Less crowded than Samui, prices are lower.
culture
Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi (1,237 steps, panoramic Andaman views) is free and genuinely moving at sunset. Bophut's Fisherman's Village on Koh Samui preserves the island's Chinese fishing community architecture. Koh Phangan's Wat Phu Khao Noi temple on the hill above Thong Sala serves as the island's most serene non-party destination.
foodie
Koh Samui's Bophut Saturday Night Walking Street has the best fresh seafood stalls outside Bangkok's Chinatown. Choose your fish, they cook it for $8-15. Krabi Town's Tuesday night market is a local affair with fewer tourists than the Ao Nang beach strip. Phuket Town's Old Town quarter has Peranakan cuisine (Thai-Chinese fusion) at lunch spots for $4-6.
We assessed island hotels across the full spectrum, from backpacker bungalows at $45 to Amanpuri at $1,100. We focused on beach quality relative to hotel positioning, transport logistics from the nearest airport, and value at each price point. Connectivity matters on Thai islands, some require multiple transport legs.

High Season (Nov-Apr)
Both Gulf and Andaman coasts are good. Clear skies, calm seas, and reliable diving visibility. December and January are the busiest months: full moon parties are packed, Phuket beaches get crowded, and hotel prices peak. Book popular Koh Samui and Krabi resorts 4-6 weeks ahead. February-April has similar weather with slightly lower crowds and prices.
Gulf Monsoon (May-Oct)
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) gets heavy monsoon rains May-October, many resorts close. The Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Chang) is comparatively drier. Ferries between Andaman islands can be cancelled. Koh Samui and Koh Chang stay open with 30-40% hotel discounts. August and September have the most rain across all islands.
Shoulder (Oct-Nov, Apr-May)
April-May transition: Andaman winds down as monsoon builds, Gulf side stable. October-November transition: both coasts shifting to dry season, Andaman coming back to life. These windows offer 20-30% discounts below peak prices with nearly identical weather. Koh Phi Phi and Railay Beach are at their best in late April and early November.
New Year Period (Dec 25-Jan 5)
Thai islands at Christmas and New Year are the most expensive 10 days of the year. Amanpuri doubles to $2,000+. Beachfront resorts on Samui and Phuket reach $400-600 for rooms that cost $150 in February. The Full Moon Party closest to New Year draws massive crowds. If you're visiting in this window, book 3-4 months ahead or accept the premium.
Mẹo đặt phòng cho Thai Islands
Chiến lược đặt phòng thông minh cho Thai Islands.
Book the Samui-Phangan-Tao catamaran in advance
The Lomprayah and Seatran catamarans connect Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao twice daily. Tickets cost $20-35 per leg. They fill up during peak season and Full Moon Party weekends. Book at the pier or online at lomprayah.com 2-3 days ahead minimum. Missing the last ferry means an unplanned overnight stop.
Negotiate jetski and water sports before committing
Jetski rental on Thai beaches is notorious for scams: operators damage the ski and demand $200-500 for pre-existing scratches. Photograph every inch of the ski before use, with the operator present. Better: skip jetskis entirely and do kayaking or paddleboarding instead (no damage liability). Tourist Police (1155) are effective for jetski disputes.
The best beaches have no road access
Railay, Maya Bay, and Phra Nang require boats. That effort filters out day-trippers from Bangkok and keeps quality higher. For Railay: longtail from Ao Nang takes 15 minutes ($5). Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh is day trips only from Phi Phi Don or Krabi ($35-45 tours). Arrive at Railay by 10am or after 4pm to avoid the tour boat peak.
Watch the full moon party calendar
Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party happens the night of the full moon every month at Hat Rin beach. Check the 2026 calendar before booking: the 2 nights before and after also have pre- and post-party events. Hotels within 3km of Hat Rin double rates for the full moon weekend. If you're not going, book away from Hat Rin or avoid Phangan entirely on those dates.
Airport taxis: use Bolt or Grab instead of fixers
At Phuket and Samui airports, legitimate taxi operators quote fixed prices ($15-25 to most beach areas). Unlicensed touts at arrivals quote $40-60. Download Grab app (Southeast Asia's Uber) before landing. At Phuket airport, Grab waits in a designated zone. At Samui: airport taxis have a legitimate fixed price board, use that and not the first person who approaches.
Monsoon doesn't mean no sun
Thai islands during low season (May-October on the Gulf, May-October on the Andaman) have rain, but typically not all day. Mornings are often sunny until 2-4pm when afternoon storms build. Many beach activities still run in the morning. If you book a Gulf island like Samui or Koh Chang in June or July, budget for 2 wet days out of 7, not the whole week. The hotels prove it by staying open.
Khách sạn tại Thai Islands, câu hỏi thường gặp
Câu trả lời thẳng thắn từ đội ngũ của chúng tôi.
Which Thai island is the best for first-timers?
Koh Samui for travelers who want convenience: international airport, good infrastructure, mixed beach quality but easy logistics. Phuket for range of choice: massive tourist industry but Kata and Kamala beaches are genuinely beautiful. Skip Patong (Phuket) and Hat Rin (Koh Phangan, unless you want the Full Moon Party scene). Krabi is the best all-round for couples.
What is the difference between Gulf islands and Andaman islands?
The Gulf (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, east coast) and Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, west coast) have opposing monsoon seasons. Gulf is best November-March, Andaman is best November-April. May-October, the Gulf is better than Andaman as Andaman gets heavy rain while the Gulf stays drier. They're also 600km apart overland, so you pick one side per trip.
How much does a beach hotel in Thailand cost?
Budget bungalows on Koh Phi Phi run $40-80. Mid-range Koh Samui or Koh Chang resorts average $90-190. Upscale Koh Samui (Six Senses level) runs $400-700. Amanpuri on Phuket is $1,100-2,500+. For the best value mid-range, Krabi resorts like Dusit Thani Beach Resort at $165 deliver pools, beach access, and good food without the Phuket premium.
Is Koh Phi Phi worth visiting?
Yes, but Koh Phi Phi Don is the inhabited island with accommodation, and it's badly overcrowded in high season. Phi Phi Leh (the Maya Bay island from The Beach film) is day-trip only. Arrive at Phi Phi Don late afternoon when the day trippers leave. The budget hotels cluster on the narrow isthmus between the two bays. Phi Phi Hotel is central and fine at $60. The beaches are legitimately beautiful.
Should I stay on Koh Samui or do a day trip to the Ang Thong Marine Park?
Base on Koh Samui and take day trips to Ang Thong ($50-60 tour from the north coast). Ang Thong has no accommodation and is only accessible by tour boat. The marine park is 42 islands with kayaking and snorkeling, best visited on a full-day guided tour. Koh Samui itself: stay near Chaweng for nightlife, Bophut for low-key charm, Choeng Mon for quieter beaches.
What is the Full Moon Party and should I avoid Koh Phangan because of it?
The Full Moon Party at Hat Rin beach happens monthly and draws 10,000-30,000 people. If you're not going to the party, avoid Koh Phangan on the full moon weekend: every guesthouse near Hat Rin charges triple rates and noise carries across the island. Go the week before or after instead. Away from Hat Rin, Koh Phangan has genuinely beautiful and quiet beaches at Sri Thanu and Haad Yao.
How do I get from Bangkok to the Thai islands?
Koh Samui: fly direct Bangkok-Samui (50 min, from $80) or Bangkok-Surat Thani ($40) + ferry (2.5 hrs). Phuket: fly direct 1.5 hrs from $50-80. Koh Chang: bus or minivan to Trat (5 hrs from Bangkok) then ferry. Krabi: fly direct 1.5 hrs from $60. For Koh Phi Phi: fly to Krabi or Phuket then ferry 1.5-2 hrs. Never take overnight bus to islands unless you have time to spare.
Is Phuket overrated?
Patong is overrated: congested, commercial, loud. But Phuket is 576 square kilometers with distinct beach areas that function like separate destinations. Kamala and Surin beaches are genuinely upscale and quiet. Kata Noi is compact and beautiful. Cape Yamu and the east coast are where Amanpuri sits, away from crowds entirely. Phuket gets unfairly written off because people stay on Patong.
What is the best Thai island for diving and snorkeling?
Koh Tao is the dive capital: 100+ dive shops, PADI Open Water from $350, and coral reefs in 5-15 meter visibility. Similan Islands (day trip from Khao Lak) have the best visibility (20-30m) and pristine hard coral. The Phi Phi Islands have colorful reef fish for snorkeling in 3-6 meters. Avoid diving on Koh Samui, the water clarity around the main island is poor.
Which Thai island is best for families with children?
Koh Chang is the family pick: calmer waters than the Gulf islands, excellent resorts like Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway with full amenities, and less party-focused infrastructure. White Sand Beach on Koh Chang's west coast has the best family setup. Avoid Hat Rin (Koh Phangan), Bangla Road (Phuket), and any Koh Phi Phi accommodation during peak season, they're for adults.
Is Railay Beach worth the effort?
Yes, emphatically. Railay is accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang (15 min, $5) because limestone cliffs cut it off from roads. That accessibility barrier means it's less crowded than any comparable beach in Thailand. Railay East and West have different characters: West is the prettier beach, East is where the longtails land. The Phra Nang Cave Beach at the tip is one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia.
How do Thai island hotels handle the low season?
Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan): May-October has rain but most hotels stay open at 30-40% discounts. Some smaller resorts close June-August. Andaman islands (Phuket, Krabi): May-October is heavy monsoon season, many hotels close entirely. Those that stay open discount heavily ($100-150 for rooms normally $300+). Flying in during monsoon: expect afternoon storms, not constant rain. Mornings are often fine.
