Uyuni exists because of the salt flat. The town itself is dusty, windswept, and basic. But the accommodation options surrounding the Salar are extraordinary. From literal salt hotels to geodesic domes on the white expanse. We reviewed the options. These 10 earned their spot.

Why These Hotels Made Our List

Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.

Hostal Avenida hotel interior
#1

Hostal Avenida

Town Center, Uyuni $45–70/night 7.2/10

This no-frills hostal sits right on Avenida Ferroviaria, the main drag through Uyuni town, walking distance from the train cemetery and tour agencies. Rooms are basic but clean, with shared bathrooms on most floors and a small common area for meeting other travelers. Hot water can be inconsistent during peak hours so shower early. The staff speak enough English to help you book salt flat tours at the front desk. A solid base if you are watching your budget and just need a bed between day trips.

Hotel Tonito hotel interior
#2

Hotel Tonito

Town Center, Uyuni $65–95/night 7.8/10

Hotel Tonito is one of the most established budget options in Uyuni, located on Calle Av. Arce near the central plaza. Rooms are simple and compact but come with private bathrooms, which sets it apart from hostal competitors at this price point. The on-site restaurant serves a decent set breakfast that will fuel a full day on the salt flats. Staff are efficient at arranging jeep tours and can connect you with reputable local operators. It fills up fast during high season so book at least a week ahead.

Hotel de Sal Luna Salada hotel interior
#3

Hotel de Sal Luna Salada

Salt Flat Edge, Colchani $120–180/night 8.5/10

Built almost entirely from salt blocks harvested from the Salar de Uyuni, this hotel sits at the edge of the flats near the small village of Colchani, about 20 kilometers from Uyuni town. Walls, floors, and furniture are all salt, giving rooms a raw, mineral smell that is surprisingly pleasant. Sunsets from the terrace directly onto the white expanse of the salar are genuinely spectacular. The restaurant focuses on Bolivian regional dishes and the portions are generous. This is a unique overnight experience you will not find anywhere else on earth.

Hotel Jardines de Uyuni hotel interior
#4

Hotel Jardines de Uyuni

Town Center, Uyuni $130–190/night 8.3/10

Jardines de Uyuni occupies a well-kept building on Calle Potosi a few blocks from the main square and is consistently one of the highest-rated mid-range options in town. Rooms are spacious by Uyuni standards, with comfortable beds and reliable heating, which matters a lot given how cold nights get at this altitude. The interior courtyard garden is a calm place to decompress after a dusty day on the salt flats. Breakfast is included and is more varied than most competitors at this price. Staff are friendly and proactive about luggage storage when you check out early for a tour.

Tambo Aymara Lodge hotel interior
#5

Tambo Aymara Lodge

Southern Altiplano, Chuvica $145–210/night 8.6/10

Tambo Aymara sits in the remote southern altiplano near Chuvica, close to the route that jeep tours take toward the colored lagoons and Siloli Desert. It is a genuine lodge experience far from town noise, with stone-and-adobe bungalows that blend into the landscape. Star visibility at night here is extraordinary given zero light pollution. The communal dining room serves hearty Bolivian meals cooked on-site and the staff are local guides with deep knowledge of the area. Getting here requires your own transport or a pre-arranged pickup, so plan accordingly.

Hotel Atakama hotel interior
#6

Hotel Atakama

Town Center, Uyuni $155–220/night 8.2/10

Hotel Atakama is positioned on Calle Bolivar close to the corner of the plaza, making it the most centrally located mid-range hotel in Uyuni. The building is modern by local standards and rooms have heating, good water pressure, and actual blackout curtains. The front desk runs a tour booking service that is well organized and connects guests with licensed operators. Breakfast is hearty and comes with fresh fruit juice, which feels like a luxury after a few days on the road. The price has crept up in recent years but the location and reliability justify it.

Los Flamencos Eco Village hotel interior
#7

Los Flamencos Eco Village

Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, Laguna Colorada $170–240/night 8.7/10

Positioned inside the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve near Laguna Colorada, this eco lodge is about as remote as accommodation gets in the region. The pink-tinted lagoon and its flamingo colonies are literally steps from your room window. Adobe cabins are small but warm, which is essential because temperatures drop severely below zero at night at this elevation. All meals are included and prepared fresh by staff who live and work in the reserve. Booking must be done well in advance as capacity is limited and this location is on most serious travelers' bucket lists.

Casa de Sal Cristal Samaña hotel interior
#8

Casa de Sal Cristal Samaña

Salar Perimeter, Uyuni $195–260/night 9/10

Cristal Samaña is another salt hotel on the perimeter of the salar, but it is better finished and more comfortable than most in its category. Rooms have thick salt-block walls that keep temperatures surprisingly stable and the decor mixes raw materials with warm textiles. The rooftop offers unobstructed views of the salt flat horizon and the surrounding volcano chain. Service is attentive and the hotel has one of the better wine lists in the region, stocked with Argentine labels. It gets booked solid during the rainy season when the mirror effect on the flats is at its peak, so plan months ahead.

Palacio de Sal hotel interior
#9

Palacio de Sal

Salar de Uyuni Shore, Uyuni $280–380/night 9.1/10

Palacio de Sal is the original and most famous salt hotel in Bolivia, built entirely from salt on the shore of the Salar de Uyuni. The hotel has been refined over multiple renovations and now offers a spa, indoor pool, and a restaurant that is genuinely excellent by any standard, not just a remote-location standard. Each room is uniquely decorated with regional crafts and the beds are among the most comfortable you will find this high in the Andes. Sunrises from the terrace turn the salt flats amber and pink in a way that photographs cannot capture properly. The price is steep for Bolivia but the experience is completely one of a kind.

Kachi Lodge hotel interior
#10

Kachi Lodge

Center of the Salt Flat, Salar de Uyuni $950–1 400/night 9.6/10

Kachi Lodge is built directly on the salt flat, reachable only by a 45-minute drive across the salar from Uyuni, and it is one of the most unusual luxury properties in South America. Six geodesic dome tents with glass panels sit on a salt platform, offering 360-degree views of the white expanse and the Andean peaks on the horizon. All inclusive means gourmet meals, open bar, and guided excursions are covered in the rate. Sleeping under the stars inside a transparent dome at 3,600 meters elevation with no light pollution is the defining feature. This is not a hotel you book because it is convenient, it is one you save for and plan an entire trip around.

Where to Stay in Uyuni

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Uyuni Town: What You Need to Know

Avenida Ferroviaria is the main strip. Tour agencies, restaurants, and ATMs line both sides for 4 blocks. The Banco Union ATM on the corner of Ferroviaria and Sucre is the most reliable. Withdraw cash here because cards don't work at most restaurants.

The town shuts down by 10pm. Extreme Cold Pub on Avenida Potosi is the only reliable late-night option. For dinner, Minuteman Pizza on Avenida Ferroviaria serves the best food in town. A large pizza costs Bs 50-60.

Salt Hotels: How to Choose

Hotel de Sal Luna Salada in Colchani is the better value ($120-180/night). It has a rooftop terrace overlooking the Salar and rooms are entirely salt-constructed. Heated rooms, which matters at -10C.

Palacio de Sal ($280-380/night) is the original salt hotel, also in Colchani. More upscale with better food and a small museum about salt construction. Both include breakfast and transfers from Uyuni town. Book direct for rates 10-15% cheaper than Booking.com.

The 3-Day Salar Tour: What to Expect

Day 1: Salar de Uyuni, Isla Incahuasi (giant cacti), perspective photos. Day 2: drive south through the Siloli Desert to Laguna Colorada (flamingos). Day 3: Sol de Manana geysers, Laguna Verde, drop-off at Chilean border or return to Uyuni.

Tours cost Bs 800-1,400 per person ($115-200) depending on vehicle quality and group size. Groups of 6 in a Land Cruiser are standard. Pay extra for a group of 4. Bring your own sleeping bag; the dormitory blankets at altitude refuges are insufficient. Food is basic but adequate.

Colchani Village: The Salt Flat Gateway

Colchani sits where the highway meets the Salar's eastern edge. Population: about 800. The village has a small salt processing plant you can visit for free, and a market selling salt crafts (Bs 10-50).

Both major salt hotels are here. A taxi from Uyuni town costs Bs 70-100. Some hotels include transfers. The advantage of basing here: you can walk onto the Salar at sunset without paying for a tour. The disadvantage: no restaurants, no ATMs, no nightlife.

Train Cemetery: Worth the Walk

3km south of Uyuni town on the road to the airport. Walk it in 35 minutes or take a Bs 10 taxi. Free entry. Dozens of rusting locomotives from the 1940s-1960s sit abandoned on the tracks.

Best light is sunrise or the hour before sunset. The rusty orange metal against the flat desert makes for great photos. It takes 30-45 minutes to explore. Combine it with an airport pickup or drop-off. Watch for sharp metal edges.

Budget Tips for the Uyuni Area

The cheapest way: overnight bus from La Paz (Bs 120), 1 night in Hostal Avenida ($45), join a 3-day tour (Bs 800), cross into Chile. Total: under $200 for the whole experience.

For comfort without luxury: fly BOA from La Paz ($80), 1 night at Hotel Tonito ($65-95), day tour with a premium agency (Bs 300), 1 night at Luna Salada ($120). Total: around $350. The salt hotel experience is worth the splurge.

Uyuni's best neighborhoods

There are two choices: stay in Uyuni town (cheap, basic, close to tour departure points) or stay near the Salar itself (expensive, unforgettable, logistically complex). Colchani village sits right at the salt flat edge, 22km from town. Remote lodges on the Salar or near Laguna Colorada require 4x4 transfers.

Otherworldly Romance

Kachi Lodge on the Salar: geodesic domes, heated floors, zero light pollution, and silence so complete you hear your own heartbeat. At $950/night it's Bolivia's most extraordinary hotel. For something more accessible, Palacio de Sal's suite ($280/night) overlooks the salt flat from Colchani.

Salt & Railway Heritage

Colchani's salt processing workshop (free entry) shows how families have harvested salt for generations. The Train Cemetery preserves Bolivia's abandoned railway ambitions. Uyuni's small museum on Avenida Arce covers the Aymara history of the altiplano. Budget Bs 20 for all three.

Backpacker Route

Uyuni is a classic South American backpacker stop. Hostal Avenida at $45/night, Minuteman Pizza for Bs 50 dinners, and a 3-day tour for Bs 800 ($115). The entire Uyuni experience can be done for under $200 from arrival to departure, not counting transport in.

Family-Friendly Adventures

Day tours to the Salar work for kids 6+ (younger children struggle at 3,656m). Isla Incahuasi's giant cacti are impressive for all ages. The Train Cemetery is an open playground of rust and metal. Keep the 3-day tour for teenagers and up.

Desert & Altiplano Landscapes

No beaches, but the world's largest salt flat (10,582 km2) is the substitute. Laguna Colorada's red waters and flamingos sit 5 hours southwest. The Sol de Manana geysers at 4,850m altitude are primal. This is landscape at its most extreme.

Altiplano Cuisine

Llama steak at Minuteman Pizza (Bs 45) is the tourist classic. For authentic food, the comedores on Calle Sucre serve quinoa soup and chuño (freeze-dried potato) for Bs 15-20. Luna Salada's restaurant does the best fine dining in the region, with llama carpaccio and quinoa risotto.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Uyuni

When to visit Uyuni and what to pay.

Unique

Mirror Season (Jan-Mar)

10-18°C day, 0-5°C nights$50-350/nightModerate crowds, wet conditions

Thin layer of water covers the Salar creating a perfect mirror of the sky. The most photographed version of Uyuni. But rain can cancel tours, roads flood, and some lodges close. February has the most water (best mirror) but also the most cancellations. Kachi Lodge stays open year-round.

Shoulder

Shoulder (Apr & Nov)

8-16°C day, -5 to 0°C nights$50-300/nightFew tourists

April still has some water for partial mirror effects. November is dry but not yet peak season. Both months offer lower prices, easier bookings, and shorter queues at Isla Incahuasi. Weather is unpredictable: pack for both rain and freezing nights.

Low

Deep Wet (Dec)

12-20°C day, 2-8°C nights$45-280/nightLowest tourism

Heavy rain can make the Salar inaccessible. Some 3-day tours stop running. Town hotels are cheapest. Only come in December if you're flexible on timing and can wait for a weather window. Remote lodges near Laguna Colorada may close for the season.

Booking Tips for Uyuni

Insider tips for booking hotels in Uyuni.

Choose your tour agency carefully

Red Planet, Quechua Connection, and Salty Desert are the three most reliable agencies on Avenida Ferroviaria. Prices: Bs 800-1,200 for 3-day tours. The cheapest options ($20/day) use old vehicles without functioning heaters. At -15C on the Salar, that's dangerous. Spend the extra Bs 200.

Bring your own sleeping bag for 3-day tours

The refugios (dormitories) on the 3-day tour provide blankets, but at 4,000m+ they're not warm enough. A sleeping bag rated to -10C costs Bs 150 to rent from agencies. Your own is better. Every experienced traveler on the altiplano circuit carries one.

Book salt hotels direct for 10-15% less

Luna Salada and Palacio de Sal both have websites with direct booking. Rates are 10-15% cheaper than Booking.com or Expedia. Email [email protected] or contact via WhatsApp. Confirm your transfer from Uyuni town when booking.

Withdraw cash in Uyuni before heading to the Salar

Banco Union ATM on Avenida Ferroviaria and Sucre is the most reliable. Prodem ATM on Avenida Potosi is backup. Maximum withdrawal: Bs 2,000 ($290) per transaction. Cards don't work at remote lodges, most restaurants, or tour agencies. Bring enough cash for your entire stay.

Day tours vs multi-day: know what you want

Day tours ($20-40/person) cover the Salar, Isla Incahuasi, and Colchani. Enough if time is short. The 3-day tour adds Laguna Colorada, Sol de Manana geysers, and Laguna Verde. It ends at the Chilean border (Hito Cajon) or returns to Uyuni. The 3-day version is the bucket-list experience.

Altitude and sun protection are non-negotiable

SPF 50 sunscreen, reapply every 2 hours. The salt reflects UV like snow. Sunglasses are mandatory, not optional. Without them, you risk snow blindness. Start coca tea 24 hours before arriving. If you feel headaches or nausea, descend to Sucre (2,810m) or take Diamox (Bs 15 at any pharmacy).

Hotels in Uyuni — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Uyuni.

What is the best area to stay near Uyuni?

Depends on your budget. Uyuni town has the cheapest options ($45-95/night) and all tour agencies leave from Avenida Ferroviaria. Colchani (22km away) has the salt hotels starting at $120/night. The Salar itself has Kachi Lodge at $950/night, the most unique hotel in Bolivia.

Should I stay in a salt hotel?

If you can afford it, yes. Hotel de Sal Luna Salada and Palacio de Sal are both built entirely from salt blocks. Walls, floors, furniture, all salt. Luna Salada ($120-180/night) sits right at the Salar edge in Colchani. Palacio de Sal ($280-380/night) is the original and more upscale. The experience is genuinely unique.

How much do hotels cost in Uyuni?

Town hostals: $45-95/night. Salt hotels in Colchani: $120-260/night. Remote lodges: $145-240/night. Kachi Lodge on the Salar itself: $950-1,400/night (all-inclusive with 4x4 transfers). Uyuni town has the most budget options but the least atmosphere.

Is Uyuni town worth staying in?

Uyuni town is functional, not charming. Dusty streets, basic restaurants, and cold nights. But Avenida Ferroviaria has 15+ tour agencies and all 3-day tours depart from here at 10am. If you're doing the standard Salar tour, one night in town before departure makes sense. The Train Cemetery is a 3km walk south.

When is the best time to visit the salt flats?

Dry season (May to October) for the classic white hexagonal patterns. Wet season (January to March) for the mirror effect, one of the most photographed phenomena in South America. July and August are coldest: nights drop to -15C on the Salar. April is a good compromise with some water remaining.

How do I get to Uyuni?

Direct buses from La Paz (12 hours, Bs 120-180), Sucre (7 hours, Bs 80-120), or Potosi (4 hours, Bs 40). BOA and Amaszonas fly La Paz to Uyuni (1 hour, $80-150 one way). The airport is 2km from town. Taxis from the airport cost Bs 15.

What should I avoid in Uyuni?

Skip the cheapest salt flat tours ($20-25/person). Vehicles are poorly maintained and drivers overwork. The Bs 150-200 range ($22-29) gets you a reliable 4x4 with working heaters. Avoid Hotel Avenida if you need hot water consistently. Don't eat at the bus terminal restaurants; walk 2 blocks to Avenida Ferroviaria for better food at the same price.

Can families visit the salt flats?

Yes, but plan carefully. Children under 5 struggle with the altitude (3,656m) and extreme cold. Day tours to the Salar are suitable for kids 6+. The 3-day tour to the colored lagoons involves 8-hour drives and basic dormitory accommodation. Stick to day trips with younger children and base at a comfortable hotel in Colchani.

What should I pack for Uyuni?

Sunscreen SPF 50 (the salt reflects UV intensely), sunglasses (essential, not optional), warm layers for -10C nights, a wind-resistant jacket, and a headlamp. Lip balm and moisturizer because the altitude and dry air crack skin in hours. Bring snacks. Options on the Salar and multi-day tours are limited.

How long should I stay in the Uyuni area?

Minimum 2 nights: arrive evening, day tour next day. Ideal: 3-4 nights to do the 3-day tour southwest through the colored lagoons to the Chilean border. Add a night in a salt hotel if budget allows. Kachi Lodge guests typically book 2 nights minimum.

Do I need to book tours in advance?

During peak season (June to August), book at least 1 week ahead for 3-day tours. Day tours fill up fast in July. Off-season, you can book 1 day before in most agencies on Avenida Ferroviaria. For Kachi Lodge, book 2-3 months ahead. It only has 6 domes.

Is altitude sickness a problem in Uyuni?

Uyuni sits at 3,656m. The Salar is at 3,653m. If you're coming from sea level, spend at least 2 nights in Sucre (2,810m) or La Paz (3,640m) first. Drink coca tea. Avoid alcohol the first day. Diamox (acetazolamide) helps: start 24 hours before arrival. Any pharmacy in La Paz sells it for Bs 15.
