Where to Stay in Sarajevo

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Baščaršija: The Ottoman Quarter

Sarajevo's heart. The Sebilj wooden fountain marks the center. Walk east on Kazandžiluk (Coppersmith Street) for handmade coffee sets (30-80 BAM). Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (1532) is free to enter outside prayer times.

Bravadžiluk street has the best food: Željo for ćevapi, Aščinica Asdž for traditional lunch, Sač for slow-cooked meat. Prices run 6-25 BAM per meal. The whole quarter covers about 6 blocks and you'll crisscross it multiple times.

War History: What to See and How

Start at the Tunnel of Hope Museum in Butmir (20 BAM taxi from center). The tunnel under the airport runway kept Sarajevo alive during the 1992-1996 siege. Entry: 10 BAM. Give yourself 90 minutes.

Walk Sniper Alley (Zmaja od Bosne boulevard) to understand the geography of the siege. Gallery 11/07/95 on Trg Fra Grge Martića covers the Srebrenica genocide (14 BAM entry). The Eternal Flame on Maršala Tita street is where most walking tours begin.

Trebević Mountain: Bobsled Track and Views

The 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track sits on Trebević, 15 minutes from the center by taxi (15 BAM). The track is now covered in graffiti and open for walking. It's eerie and photogenic.

Take the Trebević cable car (20 BAM return, runs from Bistrik) for panoramic views of the city. The top station has a cafe and hiking trails. On a clear day you can see the Olympic mountains in every direction. Go in the morning for the best light.

Ferhadija and Marijin Dvor: The Habsburg Strip

Walk west from Baščaršija on Ferhadija street. This is the Austro-Hungarian zone: grand facades, the National Library, and the Cathedral (1889). The transition from Ottoman to Habsburg architecture happens within 50 meters around the Eternal Flame.

Marijin Dvor has the National Museum (7 BAM, closed Mondays), the Historical Museum (free, donations welcome), and the Art Gallery of BiH (5 BAM). This area has more cafes and fewer souvenir shops than Baščaršija.

Ilidža: Thermal Springs and Vrelo Bosne

Tram 3 from Baščaršija to Ilidža terminus takes 35 minutes (1.80 BAM). Vrelo Bosne park is at the end of a 3km tree-lined avenue. Horse-drawn carriages cover this stretch for 5 BAM per person.

The park itself is where the Bosna River springs from underground. Crystal-clear water, swans, walking paths. Free entry. Hotel Terme Ilidža has thermal pools (day passes from 30 BAM). This is Sarajevo's escape from the urban core.

Budget Sarajevo: Eat and Sleep Cheap

Hostel Balkan Han at 80 BAM/night is 2 minutes from Baščaršija. Aščinica restaurants serve traditional Bosnian lunch plates for 5-8 BAM. Burek (meat pastry) from any pekara costs 2-3 BAM. Bosnian coffee at a traditional kahvahana: 3 BAM.

The tram system covers the whole valley for 1.80 BAM per ride. Museum entries average 10 BAM. A full day including food, transport, and one museum costs under 40 BAM ($22). Sarajevo is one of Europe's last genuine bargain capitals.

Best Areas by Vibe

Living History

Walk from the Ottoman Baščaršija to the Austro-Hungarian Ferhadija in 10 minutes. The Latin Bridge where WWI started is right there. The Tunnel of Hope Museum (10 BAM, 20 minutes by taxi) tells the siege story. You can cover 500 years of European history in a single day.

Ćevapi Capital

Sarajevo's ćevapi at Željo (Bravadžiluk street, 6 BAM for 10) are the benchmark. Burek from Pekara Sač costs 3 BAM and weighs half a kilo. Aščinica Asdž on Ćurčiluk serves traditional pot dishes for 8-12 BAM. Klopa on Kundurdžiluk modernizes the classics without losing the soul.

Europe's Budget Capital

A full day in Sarajevo costs under 40 BAM ($22): hostel bed (80 BAM/night), ćevapi lunch (6 BAM), museum entry (10 BAM), burek dinner (3 BAM), tram rides (3.60 BAM). Hostel Balkan Han puts you in Baščaršija for the price of a hostel bed in Paris.

Family Discovery

The War Childhood Museum on Logavina 32 (12 BAM) is powerful for kids 10+. Vrelo Bosne park in Ilidža has horse carriages (5 BAM), swans, and clear river springs. The Trebević cable car (20 BAM return) gives mountain views. Most restaurants welcome children and portions are large.

Mountain Escapes

No beaches, but Trebević mountain is 15 minutes from the center. The Olympic bobsled track is open for walking. Jahorina ski resort (30km, 45 min) operates in winter (day pass 60 BAM). Bjelašnica mountain (25km) has summer hiking with views across the Bosnian highlands.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Sarajevo

When to visit Sarajevo and what to pay.

Great

Spring (Apr-May)

12-22°C160-600 BAM/nightLow crowds, green city

The Miljacka valley turns green. Temperatures are comfortable for walking. Hotel prices are 20% below summer peaks. April can still have rainy spells. May is ideal: warm enough for outdoor dining, cool enough for comfortable walking. Tourist numbers are manageable.

Good

Autumn (Sep-Oct)

10-22°C160-600 BAM/nightFewer tourists, nice light

September is still warm. October brings beautiful autumn colors in the hills around the city. Photographers love this period: golden light on Ottoman architecture. Prices drop after the summer film festival. October nights get cold (5-8C) so bring layers.

Low

Winter (Nov-Mar)

-5 to 8°C140-500 BAM/nightQuiet, cold, atmospheric

Sarajevo is genuinely cold in winter. Snow is common December through February. The Christmas market on Trg Djece Sarajeva is charming. Hotel prices hit their lowest. Jahorina ski resort (30km away, day pass 60 BAM) makes Sarajevo a base for winter sports. The city is atmospheric in snow but dress for -10C.

Booking Tips for Sarajevo

Insider tips for booking hotels in Sarajevo.

Stay in Baščaršija, not the modern center

The Old Town has character that the Marijin Dvor area lacks. Hotel Old Town on Mula Mustafe Bašeskije is 2 minutes from Sebilj fountain. You'll walk more but taxis within the valley cost 5-7 BAM. The atmosphere at night in Baščaršija is worth the slightly higher room price.

Buy a Sarajevo Card if staying 3+ days

The Sarajevo Card (40 BAM for 72 hours) includes free tram rides, museum entries, and discounts at 30+ restaurants. It pays for itself in 2 museum visits and 4 tram rides. Available at the tourist information center on Sarači 58 in Baščaršija.

Book Sarajevo Film Festival hotels by July 1

The festival runs mid-August. Hotels within walking distance of Baščaršija fill up by early July. Prices jump 30-40% during the festival week. If you're not coming for the festival, avoid August 15-25 or book well ahead.

Use the tram for Ilidža and the airport

Tram 3 runs the full east-west valley from Baščaršija to Ilidža (1.80 BAM, 35 minutes). Tram 1 connects to the train station. Tickets from kiosks are cheaper than buying on the tram. Validate your ticket on board or risk a 50 BAM fine.

Exchange money at the post office, not hotels

BH Pošta exchange offices give the best rates for EUR and USD. The one on Obala Kulina Bana near the Latin Bridge is open until 7pm. Hotels charge 3-5% more. ATMs are plentiful: Raiffeisen Bank and UniCredit have the lowest withdrawal fees (3 BAM).

Don't skip Mostar as a day trip

Buses leave from Sarajevo East bus station every 1-2 hours. Journey: 2 hours. Cost: 18 BAM one way. See the Stari Most bridge, swim in the Neretva (summer), eat at Šadrvan restaurant (12 BAM for a full meal). Last bus back at 7pm. You can also book a private transfer for 70 BAM that stops at Konjic's Ottoman bridge.

Hotels in Sarajevo — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Sarajevo.

What is the best area to stay in Sarajevo?

Baščaršija (Old Town) wins for first-timers. You're surrounded by Ottoman architecture, the coppersmith bazaar, and Sarajevo's best ćevapi at Ćevabdžinica Željo (6 BAM for a portion). Hotels here run 80-350 BAM/night. The Latin Bridge where WWI started is a 3-minute walk.

How much do hotels cost in Sarajevo?

Budget: 80-140 BAM/night ($45-80). Mid-range: 180-370 BAM/night ($100-200). Luxury: 450-750 BAM/night ($250-420). Sarajevo is 40-50% cheaper than Dubrovnik for comparable quality. A room that costs 350 BAM here would be 700 BAM on the Croatian coast.

Is Sarajevo safe for tourists?

Very safe. The city center is well-lit and walkable until midnight. Petty theft is rare. The one genuine safety concern: do not walk off marked trails in the hills around the city. Landmines from the 1990s war still exist in areas outside maintained paths. Stick to paved roads and marked hiking routes.

How do I get from the airport to the city center?

Sarajevo International Airport is 12km southwest of Baščaršija. Official airport taxis cost 20-30 BAM ($11-17) and take 20-30 minutes. The airport bus costs 5 BAM to the Baščaršija stop and runs every 30-60 minutes. There's no Uber, but the airport taxi desk is honest.

What's the best time to visit Sarajevo?

May through September for warmth. Sarajevo hits 28-32C in July. April and October are perfect shoulder months: 15-20C, fewer tourists, and hotel prices drop 20%. Winter (December to February) is cold (down to -10C) but the Sarajevo Film Festival in August and the Christmas market are worth planning around.

Where should I eat in Sarajevo?

Ćevabdžinica Željo on Bravadžiluk Street has served the best ćevapi in Sarajevo since 1950 (6 BAM for 10 pieces). Dveri on Prote Bakovića for traditional Bosnian pot dishes (15-25 BAM). Klopa on Kundurdžiluk for modern takes on Bosnian food. Skip the restaurants with photos in the menu on Baščaršija's main square.

What should I skip in Sarajevo?

Skip the overpriced Old Town tour operators charging 50+ BAM for a 2-hour walk. Download a free walking tour app or join the free tours leaving from Sebilj fountain daily at 10:30am and 4pm. Avoid the restaurants on Baščaršija's main pedestrian square (2x the price, half the quality). The ones on side streets like Bravadžiluk are much better.

Is Sarajevo good for families?

Decent but not ideal for young children. The War Childhood Museum on Logavina 32 is powerful for kids 10+ (12 BAM entry). Vrelo Bosne park in Ilidža has horse-drawn carriages (5 BAM) and walking paths. The bobsled track on Trebević mountain (15 BAM taxi) is a unique half-day activity.

Can I do day trips from Sarajevo?

Mostar is the top day trip: 2 hours by bus (18 BAM one way), see the Stari Most bridge, eat at Šadrvan restaurant. Travnik (1.5 hours, 14 BAM) has Ottoman fortresses. Jajce (2.5 hours) has a waterfall in the town center. Lukomir village (1.5 hours by car) is Bosnia's highest and most isolated village.

How long should I stay in Sarajevo?

3 nights minimum. Day 1: Baščaršija and the Ottoman quarter. Day 2: War history (Tunnel Museum, Sniper Alley, Gallery 11/07/95). Day 3: Trebević mountain or Mostar day trip. A 4th night lets you add Ilidža's thermal springs and Vrelo Bosne park without rushing.

Do I need to book hotels in advance?

July and August fill up, especially during Sarajevo Film Festival (mid-August). Book 3-4 weeks ahead for summer. Baščaršija hotels fill fastest. Spring and autumn: you can book 2-3 days before with no issues. Winter: walk-in rates are often cheaper than online.

What local customs should I know?

Bosnian coffee is a ritual, not a quick drink. Order it at a traditional kahvahana and expect it served in a džezva (copper pot) with sugar cubes and lokum (Turkish delight). 3-4 BAM. Tipping 10% at restaurants is appreciated. Friday prayers at mosques mean Baščaršija gets busy from 12 to 2pm.
