Rooms are modern and well-insulated, which matters given the street noise in parts of the city. The pool area is a genuine bonus in summer and not something you expect at this price point. Parking is free and the check-in process is smooth. Good for couples and families who want reliability.

Hotel Tryavna

Town Center, Tryavna $130–185/night 8.6/10

Tryavna is a small Revival-period town about 30 kilometers from Veliko Tarnovo and this hotel is one of its best options. The building is a restored National Revival house with carved wooden ceilings and a courtyard that slows everything down in the best way. Rooms vary in size but the larger ones with street-facing windows are worth the small premium. The town itself is quiet and walkable, with the famous Clock Tower a few minutes on foot. A strong choice for a romantic overnight away from the larger city.

The property has a large outdoor pool, a spa, and well-tended gardens that feel removed from the tourist trail. Rooms are decorated with traditional Bulgarian textiles and the overall feel is polished without being pretentious. The village itself has several medieval churches worth visiting on foot. This is consistently one of the best-reviewed properties in the greater Veliko Tarnovo area.

Sveta Gora, Veliko Tarnovo $175–240/night 8.4/10

Hotel Veliko is a full-service property on the Sveta Gora hill with conference facilities and a more corporate atmosphere than most hotels in the city. The rooms are large and well-equipped with proper desks and fast Wi-Fi. The panoramic restaurant on the upper floor is one of the better dining options in Veliko Tarnovo and is open to non-guests. The location requires a short drive or taxi to reach the old town attractions. Works well for longer stays or business trips.

Center, Veliko Tarnovo $260–370/night 8.8/10

The Interhotel Veliko Tarnovo is the closest thing to a full luxury property in the city center, with a rooftop pool and panoramic views of the fortress and the Yantra River canyon below. Suites are genuinely spacious with modern finishes and large bathrooms. The breakfast spread is far above average for the region. Staff are attentive and the concierge can arrange private fortress tours and wine tastings at nearby estates. At this price point it competes favorably with Sofia luxury hotels.

Bolyarski Hotel and Spa

Arbanasi Village, Arbanasi $290–420/night 9/10

Bolyarski Hotel and Spa occupies a beautifully restored complex in Arbanasi village and is the most complete luxury retreat in the region. The spa has an indoor pool, saunas, and treatment rooms that draw guests from Sofia for weekend stays. Rooms and suites are finished with hand-carved wood furniture and each has a fireplace, which earns its keep in winter. The restaurant focuses on slow-cooked Bulgarian dishes paired with local wines from the Danube Plain. Book well in advance for weekends between May and October.

Where to Stay in Veliko Tarnovo

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Walking Gurko Street: the heart of Old Town

General Gurko Street runs along the cliff edge above the Yantra River, and every second building is either a cafe, a gallery, or a family-run hotel. Start at the eastern end near the Stambolov Bridge and walk west toward Tsarevets.

The best views are from the terraces of the restaurants on the south side. Grab a table at Shtastliveca or the Yantra Grand Hotel terrace. A coffee with a fortress view costs лв3-5.

The street gets crowded between 11am and 2pm in summer. Walk it early morning or after 6pm when the light hits the fortress walls and most tour groups have left.

Tsarevets Fortress: skip the crowds

The fortress opens at 8am April through October. Get there at opening and you'll have the Patriarch's Complex almost to yourself. Entry is лв6 for adults. The climb to the top takes 15 minutes at a normal pace.

Most guided tour groups arrive between 10am and 1pm via the main gate. The views from Baldwin's Tower at the highest point are worth the extra stairs. Bring water because there's nothing sold inside the fortress walls.

The Execution Rock on the north side is the most dramatic viewpoint in town. It's a 3-minute detour from the main path and most visitors miss it entirely.

Arbanasi village: monastery gardens and quiet nights

Arbanasi sits on a plateau 4km north of Veliko Tarnovo. The Nativity of Christ Church has 17th-century frescoes that rival anything in Rila Monastery. Entry лв6, and you'll often be the only visitor.

The village has maybe 15 guesthouses and 8 restaurants. Sevastokrator Hotel is the standout, with a pool overlooking the valley. Room rates run лв150-320/night, which buys genuine peace.

A taxi from Veliko Tarnovo center costs лв8-10. The last reliable taxi back is around 10pm. If you're staying in Arbanasi, stock up on supplies. The village shop closes at 7pm.

Asenov Quarter: the riverside neighborhood nobody mentions

Below the fortress, the Asenov Quarter lines the Yantra riverbanks. It's where the locals actually live. The Church of the 40 Martyrs (лв6 entry) has medieval inscriptions and a quiet courtyard.

Hotels here are the cheapest in town. Expect лв45-80/night for basic but clean rooms. The walk up to Tsarevets takes 10 minutes and the stairs are steep, so it's not ideal if you have mobility issues.

The restaurants along the river serve grilled trout from the Yantra for лв10-14. Mehana Hadji Nikoli on the main road is the one locals prefer. Skip the first two places at the bridge, which cater to the tour bus crowd.

Day trip to Tryavna: Bulgaria's woodcarving capital

Tryavna is 35km south, reachable by bus in 45 minutes (лв5 from the main station). The Daskalov House on the main square has rival woodcarved ceilings created by competing craftsmen in the 1800s. It's possibly the most impressive domestic interior in Bulgaria.

The old clock tower square is compact and walkable in 30 minutes. Several workshops sell hand-carved icons and decorative panels starting at лв20. The Tryavna School of Art maintains a tradition going back 300 years.

Combine this with a stop at Dryanovo Monastery (15 minutes off the main road). The monastery has a cave with stalactites and a small church carved into rock. Budget 4-5 hours total for both stops.

Where to eat: beyond the tourist menus

The tourist restaurants along Gurko Street serve decent food at лв12-25 per main. But the best meals are slightly off the main drag. Ego Pizza near the art gallery does wood-fired pizza that rivals anything in Sofia (лв8-14).

For traditional Bulgarian food, Mehana Gurko at number 33 has been doing shopska salads and kavarma stews since the 1990s. Portions are huge. Two people eat well for лв30-40 including a bottle of Mavrud wine.

Breakfast is often included with hotels, but if not, the bakeries along Independance Street sell banitsa (cheese pastry) for лв2.50. Paired with a лв1 ayran from the corner shop, that's the best лв3.50 breakfast in Bulgaria.

Veliko Tarnovo's best neighborhoods

Old Town (Varosha) puts you steps from Tsarevets. Arbanasi is worth the 4km taxi ride for monastery-garden quiet. Skip the high-rise blocks south of the river.

Varosha (Old Town) 4 vetted hotels

Cobblestoned streets and fortress views, 5 minutes walk from Tsarevets.

Varosha is the obvious pick for first-timers. The pedestrianized streets wind past Revival-era houses, and every other building is a cafe or guesthouse. Gurko Street is the main artery, running along the cliff edge with river views.

Hotels range from converted merchant houses (лв100-180/night) to the Yantra Grand Hotel at the top end. The location premium is real but justified. You can walk to the fortress, the craft street, and 20 restaurants without touching a car.

Noise from the restaurants fades by 11pm. Light sleepers should request rooms facing the river side, not the street side.

Best areas Gurko Street, Stambolov Bridge area, near Samovodska Charshiya
Price range лв80-300/night
Best for First-timers, couples, walkability
Avoid Rooms above bars on the west end of Gurko (loud until 11pm)
Best months May, June, September
Arbanasi 3 vetted hotels

Hilltop village with monastery gardens and valley panoramas.

Arbanasi is 4km north of the center, perched on a plateau above the Yantra valley. The vibe is completely different. Quiet streets, stone walls, and churches with hidden fresco treasures. It feels like a separate trip.

The best hotels here have pools and gardens with fortress views. Expect лв120-420/night. Sevastokrator is the standout. The Arbanasi Palace is solid for families with its larger rooms and playground.

The trade-off is isolation. You need a taxi (лв8-10) or car for anything in Veliko Tarnovo. The village has a handful of restaurants and a single small shop. But if quiet evenings and morning birdsong are your priority, this is it.

Best areas Near Nativity Church, Sevastokrator area
Price range лв120-420/night
Best for Couples, peace and quiet, pool hotels
Avoid No nightlife, limited dining after 9pm
Best months May through September
Asenov Quarter 2 vetted hotels

Riverside budget base below the fortress walls.

The Asenov Quarter sits at the base of Tsarevets along the Yantra River. This is where the cheapest beds are. лв45-80/night buys a clean room in a family guesthouse, often with breakfast included.

The walk up to the fortress entrance takes 10 minutes on steep stairs. It's a workout, but you're rewarded with the cheapest prices in the area and a more local atmosphere. The Church of the 40 Martyrs is right here.

Restaurants along the river serve grilled fish and Bulgarian standards at лв8-15 per main. The area floods very rarely but it has happened. Check recent reviews if you're visiting March through April.

Best areas Along the river, near Church of 40 Martyrs
Price range лв45-100/night
Best for Budget travelers, history buffs
Avoid Steep climb to Old Town if you have knee problems
Best months May through October
Tryavna 1 vetted hotel

Craft town 30 minutes south with woodcarving heritage.

Tryavna is a separate town, 35km from Veliko Tarnovo. Most visitors come as a day trip, but staying overnight means you get the old clock tower square to yourself after the day-trippers leave.

Hotels are basic but cheap (лв50-90/night). The Zograf and Ralitsa are the best options near the center. The Tryavna School of Art produces real craftwork that you can buy directly from workshops.

The town is compact. Everything worth seeing fits in a 20-minute walk from the clock tower. Combine with Dryanovo Monastery (15km north) for a full day of architecture and history.

Best areas Clock tower square, near Daskalov House
Price range лв50-120/night
Best for Art lovers, day trippers, budget stays
Avoid Limited options after 8pm, most cafes close early
Best months May through October

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Veliko Tarnovo.

Culture

Varosha's Old Town is a living museum. Revival-era houses line every street, and Tsarevets Fortress dominates every sightline. The Samovodska Charshiya craft street has working workshops where artisans sell directly.

Romantic

Arbanasi village after dark is pure romance. Candlelit dinners at Sevastokrator's terrace overlooking the valley, morning walks through monastery gardens, and exactly zero crowds. Hotel rooms from лв150/night.

Budget

Asenov Quarter has guesthouses from лв45/night with breakfast included. A full day in Veliko Tarnovo costs under лв60 per person: fortress entry лв6, lunch лв12, dinner лв15, coffee лв3. It's one of Europe's cheapest historic cities.

Family

The Interhotel Veliko Tarnovo has a pool and family rooms. Kids love climbing Tsarevets Fortress (it's basically a castle playground), and the pottery workshops on Samovodska Charshiya keep them busy for лв10-15 per session.

Foodie

Gurko Street's restaurant row serves Bulgarian classics: shopska salad, kavarma stew, grilled trout from the Yantra. A dinner for two with Mavrud wine costs лв30-40. The banitsa bakeries on Independance Street open at 6am.

Beach

There's no beach in Veliko Tarnovo. But the Yantra River has swimming spots in Asenov Quarter during summer (June through August, water temp 18-22°C). The nearest actual beach is Varna on the Black Sea, 3 hours east by car.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Veliko Tarnovo

When to visit Veliko Tarnovo and what to pay.

Peak

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Avg hotel: лв90-250/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 22-35°C

July and August bring tour groups and 35°C heat that makes the fortress climb brutal. The sound and light show runs nightly, which is a plus. Hotels in Varosha fill up by early June. Book 4-6 weeks ahead or settle for the blocks near the bus station.

Budget Friendly

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Avg hotel: лв40-100/nightCrowds: Very LowTemp: -3-5°C

Prices crater and half the guesthouses close. The fortress is still open but the cold wind on the hilltop is serious. Arbanasi empties out entirely. Budget travelers can find лв40/night rooms in Varosha, but make sure heating is included because some older buildings charge extra.

Booking Tips for Veliko Tarnovo

Insider tips for booking hotels in Veliko Tarnovo.

Book Arbanasi hotels with breakfast

The village has limited dining options and no bakeries. Hotels that include breakfast save you a лв8-10 taxi to town each morning. Sevastokrator and Arbanasi Palace both include it.

Arrive by bus, not train

The train station is in Gorna Oryahovitsa, 8km away (лв6-8 taxi to Old Town). The bus station is a 10-minute walk from Varosha. ETN buses from Sofia cost лв22-28 and take 3.5 hours with comfortable seats.

Parking in Old Town is limited

Most hotels have 2-3 spots maximum. Arrive before 3pm in summer or you'll park at the lot near Stambolov Bridge (лв3/day) and walk 8 minutes uphill. Street parking on Gurko is residents-only.

The fortress show requires timing

The Tsarevets sound and light show runs weekends April through October, starting at sunset (9:30pm in summer, 7:30pm in spring/fall). There's no fixed schedule posted online. Ask your hotel or check the local tourism office on Hristo Botev Street.

Bring cash for guesthouses

Many small guesthouses and restaurants in Varosha and Asenov Quarter only accept cash (Bulgarian lev). ATMs are on the main boulevard near the post office. The larger hotels accept cards, but the best value places often don't.

Combine with Tryavna for 3 nights

Two nights in Veliko Tarnovo and one in Tryavna (or a day trip) gives the complete picture. The bus costs лв5 each way and runs hourly. This combo covers the best of central Bulgaria's history and crafts.

Hotels in Veliko Tarnovo — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Veliko Tarnovo.

What is the best area to stay in Veliko Tarnovo?

Varosha (the Old Town) is the clear winner. You're 5 minutes walk from Tsarevets Fortress and surrounded by cafes on Gurko Street. Hotels here run лв80-200/night. Arbanasi village is the quieter alternative, 4km north, with monastery gardens and hilltop views.

How much do hotels cost in Veliko Tarnovo?

Budget guesthouses in Asenov Quarter start at лв45/night. Mid-range hotels in Varosha average лв100-180/night. The top picks in Arbanasi and restored Old Town houses reach лв300-420/night, which is still a fraction of what you'd pay in Sofia.

Is Veliko Tarnovo worth visiting for a weekend?

Two nights is the sweet spot. Day one: Tsarevets Fortress in the morning (лв6 entry, arrive by 9am to beat tour groups), Samovodska Charshiya craft street in the afternoon. Day two: Arbanasi monasteries, then Tryavna if you have a car. The evening sound and light show at the fortress runs April through October.

How do I get from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo?

Direct buses from Sofia Central Station take 3.5 hours and cost лв22-28 one way. ETN runs the most comfortable service with departures every 2 hours. The train takes 4.5 hours via Gorna Oryahovitsa and costs лв15, but the bus station is closer to Old Town. Taxis from the bus station to Varosha cost лв5-8.

Should I stay in Arbanasi or Veliko Tarnovo center?

Arbanasi is better for couples and anyone who wants quiet evenings. The village has maybe 12 restaurants and zero nightlife. You'll need a car or лв8-10 taxi each way to reach Tsarevets. Varosha in the center gives you walkable access to everything, better restaurant options on Gurko Street, and the fortress lit up at night from your window.

What should I avoid in Veliko Tarnovo hotels?

Skip anything near the bus station or south of the Yantra River bridge. Those tower blocks from the 1970s charge лв50-70/night but the rooms are depressing and traffic noise is constant. Also avoid the hotels marketed as 'fortress view' that actually face a parking lot. Check photos carefully.

When is the best time to visit Veliko Tarnovo?

May and September are perfect. Temperatures hover around 20-25°C, hotel prices drop 30% from summer peak, and Tsarevets isn't packed with school groups. The sound and light show at the fortress (April-October) is genuinely spectacular. Avoid December through February unless you enjoy лв45/night rates with no heating.

Is Veliko Tarnovo good for families?

It's solid for kids over 8 who can handle the steep cobblestone streets. Tsarevets Fortress is basically a giant playground. The Samovodska Charshiya has craft workshops where kids can try pottery (лв10-15 per session). Younger children will struggle with the hills. The Interhotel Veliko Tarnovo has a pool and flat access, which helps.

What are the best restaurants near Veliko Tarnovo hotels?

Shtastliveca on Gurko Street serves the best grilled meats in town (mains лв12-22). Ego Pizza near General Gurko 33 does surprisingly good wood-fired pizzas. In Arbanasi, Sevastokrator Restaurant inside the hotel of the same name has a terrace with valley views and traditional Bulgarian cuisine at лв15-30 per main.

Do I need a car in Veliko Tarnovo?

Not if you're staying in Varosha. Everything is walkable within 15 minutes, including the fortress. You'll want a car (or the лв8 taxi) for Arbanasi and definitely for Tryavna (30 minutes south). Parking in Old Town is tricky. Most hotels have 2-3 spots that fill up by 3pm in summer.

Is the Tsarevets sound and light show worth it?

Absolutely. It runs on weekend evenings April through October, starting after sunset (around 9:30pm in summer). The fortress lights up in sequence with music and lasers. It's free to watch from Gurko Street or the viewpoint near Stambolov Bridge. The show lasts 20 minutes and draws a crowd, so grab a cafe table on Gurko by 8:30pm.

Can I visit Tryavna as a day trip from Veliko Tarnovo?

Tryavna is 30 minutes by car or 45 minutes by bus (лв5, departures from the main bus station every hour). The Daskalov House has Bulgaria's finest carved wooden ceilings. The old clock tower square has craft shops selling woodcarving and icons. Two hours is enough for the town center. Combine it with the Dryanovo Monastery, which is on the way back.
