Set in Xi'an's High-Tech Development Zone on Gaoxin Road, this hotel caters primarily to business travelers attending conventions at the nearby conference centers. The pool and gym facilities are among the better ones in this price range in the city.

#7

Xi'an Marriott Hotel

Chanba Ecological Zone, Xi'an $160–230/night 8.7/10

The Xi'an Marriott stands along the Chanba Ecological Zone waterfront, about eight kilometers northeast of the city center, giving it a quieter setting than downtown options. Rooms are large, well-appointed, and maintained to a high standard with proper sound insulation. The all-day dining restaurant is genuinely good rather than just functional for a hotel of this type. The location requires taxis or ride-hailing apps to reach the main sights, but many guests find the calm worth the commute.

#8

Crowne Plaza Xi'an

Xiaozhai, Xi'an $185–245/night 8.6/10

Rooms are among the largest and most refined in Xi'an, with deep soaking tubs, high-quality linens, and attentive turndown service. The French-Chinese fusion restaurant on the upper floors is worth a reservation even for non-guests. Where to Stay in Xi'an

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Stay inside the old city walls for your first Xi'an visit

Hotels inside the ancient walls put you walking distance from the Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and South Gate. The walk from most Bell Tower hotels to the Muslim Quarter entrance takes under 10 minutes.

Outside the walls, even nearby areas require transport for every sightseeing trip. Mid-range options inside the walls from $105-200/night are worth the premium over suburban equivalents.

Visit the Terracotta Warriors in the morning, not the afternoon

Tour groups arrive in force from 9:30am and Pit 1 becomes crowded by 10am. Book the earliest entry slot and arrive before 9am. From Bell Tower hotels, a Didi to the metro costs 15 RMB. Metro Line 9 takes 40 minutes to the museum.

Total cost each way is about 25 RMB by metro and far more reliable than tourist buses from the train station area.

Go to the Muslim Quarter at 8am, not at noon

The Great Mosque at the end of Huajue Lane is one of the finest Islamic sites in China and is far better before 9am. Entry costs 25 RMB and the Tang Dynasty architecture mixed with Islamic design is remarkable.

Food stalls on Beiyuanmen Street open at 7am. Morning visits mean half the crowd density and no queuing for biang biang noodles.

Qujiang is for Tang heritage, not city center sightseeing

Qujiang has the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Tang Paradise, and the Qujiang Museum. But it sits 6-8 kilometers south of the Bell Tower area. The Wyndham Xi'an South and Crowne Plaza are both here.

If your priority is the Muslim Quarter and Terracotta Warriors, staying in Qujiang adds 20-30 minutes to every trip north. Stay there only if Tang Dynasty culture is your main focus.

Xiaozhai district has the best local eating scene

Around Xiaozhai metro station (Line 3) sits the densest concentration of local Xi'an restaurants at honest prices. Biang biang noodles from 14 RMB. Lamb paomo (bread crumbled into lamb soup) costs 25-35 RMB at proper local canteens.

The Crowne Plaza Xi'an in Xiaozhai has a rooftop pool with pagoda views and is 20 minutes walk to the Qujiang sites.

High-Tech Zone hotels are for business only

The High-Tech Development Zone has conference centers and multinational offices. Grand Park Xi'an on Gaoxin Road serves this market well. The metro takes 20 minutes to reach the old city.

For any leisure visitor, this is not the right base. The area has chain restaurants and malls but none of the atmosphere that makes Xi'an interesting.

Xi'an's best neighborhoods

Xi'an's old city sits inside ancient walls with the Bell Tower at center. The Muslim Quarter north of the Bell Tower has the best street food. Qujiang to the south covers Tang Dynasty heritage. High-Tech Zone and Chanba are for business travelers.

Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter 4 vetted hotels

Xi'an's historic heart with street food and the city's best access

The Bell Tower roundabout sits at the geographic center of the walled city, with the Muslim Quarter a 10-minute walk from most hotels. Citadines on Zhongshan Street, Mercure on Renmin Square, and Sofitel are all within this core.

The area is walkable to both the city wall and the Muslim Quarter food stalls. Metro Line 2 stops at Bell Tower station.

Best streets Zhongshan Street, Renmin Square, Shuyuanmen
Price range $45-420/night
Best for First-time visitors, food tourism, history
Avoid Rooms facing the Bell Tower roundabout for light sleepers
Best months April-May, September-October
Qujiang New District 2 vetted hotels

Tang Dynasty heritage zone with the Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Qujiang is 6-8 kilometers south of the Bell Tower, built around Tang Dynasty cultural sites. Tang Paradise, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Qujiang Museum are all here. The evening fountain show at 8:30pm is worth seeing.

Distance from the Muslim Quarter and Terracotta Warriors requires planning extra transport time into your day.

Best streets Yanta Road, Qujiang Avenue
Price range $145-260/night
Best for Families, Tang Dynasty culture focus
Avoid If Muslim Quarter and warriors are your main priorities
Best months April-May, September-October
High-Tech Zone (Gaoxin) 1 vetted hotel

Modern business district with conference facilities

Xi'an's High-Tech Development Zone is on the south side of the ring road, built around technology companies and convention centers. It is 20 minutes by metro from the old city.

For leisure visitors the area offers no tourist interest. Book here only if your reason for visiting Xi'an is business-related.

Best streets Gaoxin Road, Keji Road
Price range $120-185/night
Best for Business travelers, conference attendees
Avoid For leisure visitors or first-time Xi'an trips
Best months Year-round for business
North City Wall (Heritage Courtyards) 1 vetted hotel

Most authentic luxury experience inside the walled city

The north section of the ancient walls near Anyuanmen Gate has converted heritage courtyards for the most unique accommodation in Xi'an. The Suites Xi'an has 28 rooms using carved stone, aged timber, and hand-thrown pottery.

This neighborhood is quieter than the Bell Tower area. It attracts couples and honeymooners who want genuine heritage rather than modern hotel amenities.

Best streets North Wall Road, Anyuanmen Gate area
Price range $310-520/night
Best for Couples, heritage atmosphere, honeymooners
Avoid If you need conference facilities or group logistics
Best months April-May, September-October

Best Areas by Vibe

The Suites Xi'an near the North City Wall has 28 suites in a converted heritage courtyard from $310/night. The Sofitel on Renmin Square has deep soaking tubs and the best restaurant view in the city from $265/night. City wall sunset views from the South Gate tower cost just 54 RMB entry.

Relaxation

Xi'an Marriott on the Chanba Ecological Zone waterfront is the quietest upscale setting in Xi'an from $160/night, 8 kilometers from the center. The Crowne Plaza Xiaozhai has a rooftop infinity pool with pagoda views. Sofitel's spa is the best in central Xi'an.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Xi'an

When to visit Xi'an and what to pay.

Hot and crowded

Summer (June-August)

Avg hotel: $90-180/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 28-38C

Xi'an summers are hot. The Terracotta Warriors outdoor sections become uncomfortable by 10am. Museums and indoor sites are manageable. The Muslim Quarter is extremely crowded on summer weekends from noon. Start every outdoor activity before 8:30am.

Excellent

Autumn (September-November)

Avg hotel: $100-220/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 14-26C

September and October have Xi'an's best weather. National Holiday week (October 1-7) brings enormous crowds and higher prices. Late October and November are quieter with cool, dry days ideal for the city wall ride and outdoor sites.

Off-season bargains

Winter (December-February)

Avg hotel: $70-140/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 0-10C

Cold but not extreme. The Terracotta Warriors museum is far less crowded in winter. Indoor sites like Shaanxi History Museum are worth extended visits. Muslim Quarter food stalls stay open and the lamb paomo soup is particularly good in cold weather.

Booking Tips for Xi'an

Insider tips for booking hotels in Xi'an.

Book Terracotta Warriors tickets at least a week ahead

Entry (150 RMB) requires advance online booking during National Holidays and summer. Walk-in availability is limited at peak times. Book through the official museum site or a Chinese ticketing platform. Arrive before 9am when tour groups start arriving by the hundred.

The South Gate area has the best mid-range hotels

Xian Backstreet Youth Hostel near Shuyuanmen Street is close to the South Gate entry point with reliable English-speaking staff. Most Bell Tower and South Gate hotels are 10-15 minutes walk from the Muslim Quarter entrance.

Order biang biang noodles from a back-street stall, not a tourist restaurant

The noodles are wide, hand-pulled, and best at stalls on back streets off Beiyuanmen, not in tourist-facing sit-down restaurants. Look for a queue of locals. Price should be 15-20 RMB for a large bowl, not 50-80 RMB as charged at tourist restaurants.

Shaanxi History Museum requires advance booking for free entry

No entry fee but daily visitor limit. Same-day tickets run out by 9am during peak season. Book online through the museum's official website the day before, or arrive before 8:30am opening. The Tang Dynasty gallery is the best single room in the museum.

Use Metro Line 2 for Bell Tower and train station connections

Line 2 stops at Beidajie (near North Gate), Bell Tower, Yongningmen (South Gate), and connects to Xi'an North high-speed rail station. A single trip costs 2-6 RMB. Didi from Bell Tower to the Terracotta Warriors costs about 90 RMB and avoids the metro transfer.

Skip the Tang Dynasty dinner show

Most visitors report it is overpriced at 300-400 RMB and geared toward domestic group tourism. Spend the money instead on a proper dinner in Xiaozhai district and see the Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show at 8:30pm, which is free. The city wall lit up at night is also worth seeing from outside.

Hotels in Xi'an — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Xi'an.

What is the best area to stay in Xi'an?

The Bell Tower area is the best base for most visitors. The Muslim Quarter is a 10-minute walk, the city wall is 5 minutes. Expect $100-250/night for decent mid-range hotels here. Qujiang suits families visiting the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Skip the High-Tech Zone unless you are here for business.

How do I get to the Terracotta Warriors from central Xi'an?

Metro Line 9 runs directly to the museum from the Xi'an North station area. Journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 7 RMB. Tourist Bus 5 from the east side of the train station square costs 12 RMB. Avoid private tour buses near the station as they overcharge. Entry to the museum costs 150 RMB.

Is the Muslim Quarter worth visiting?

Yes, one of the best food streets in China. Biang biang noodles, lamb skewers, persimmon cakes, and pomegranate juice are all worth trying along Beiyuanmen and Huajue Lane. Expect 10-40 RMB per item. Goes extremely crowded on weekends from noon. Go at 8am for a quieter experience and access to the Great Mosque before the tourist rush.

Which Xi'an sights are actually worth the time?

The Terracotta Warriors are genuinely extraordinary, budget 3-4 hours minimum. The city wall cycle ride (200 RMB for 100 minutes) is worth it at sunset. Shaanxi History Museum is free but requires advance online ticket reservation. Big Wild Goose Pagoda is pleasant in evenings when the fountain show runs at 8:30pm. Skip reconstructed Tang Dynasty dinner shows.

What is the best time of year to visit Xi'an?

April to May and September to October are best, with temperatures of 15-25C. Summer gets hot at 30-38C and the Terracotta Warriors outdoor site is exhausting in midday heat. Winter is cold and dry at 0-10C but museums are far less crowded. Qingming Festival in April brings heavy domestic crowds.

How do I get around Xi'an?

The metro has 4 lines covering main tourist areas. Line 2 passes the Bell Tower and train stations. Single tickets cost 2-6 RMB. Didi is cheap and reliable, typically 15-30 RMB across the old city. The Muslim Quarter and Bell Tower area are entirely walkable once you are there.

What Xi'an street food should I try in the Muslim Quarter?

Start with biang biang noodles at a street stall for 15-20 RMB. Rou jia mo (Chinese burger with braised beef or pork) costs 8-15 RMB. Fresh pomegranate juice squeezed at market stalls runs 10-15 RMB. Persimmon cakes are about 5 RMB each. Avoid tourist-facing sit-down restaurants on the main Muslim Quarter street as prices double.

What hotels are best near the Terracotta Warriors?

Day-tripping from Xi'an city makes more sense than staying near the site, where hotel quality is low. Metro Line 9 reaches the museum in 40 minutes from central Xi'an. Book your warrior visit first thing in the morning and arrive before 9am when tour groups start arriving in force.

Is the city wall cycle ride worth it?

Yes. The Xi'an city wall is 14 kilometers long and one of the best-preserved ancient walls in China. Bike rental costs 200 RMB for 100 minutes or 45 RMB per hour. The full circuit takes 90-120 minutes by bicycle. Sunset timing is ideal. Enter through the South Gate, nearest to most city center hotels.

What neighborhoods should I avoid when booking in Xi'an?

Skip hotels in Weiyang district to the north of the old city, it has nothing for tourists. The area around Xi'an North high-speed rail station is equally poor for sightseeing. Hotels in tech development zones south of the ring road are cheaper but add 20-30 minutes of transport to every key sight.

How much does a typical day cost in Xi'an?

Budget 200-350 RMB per person: Terracotta Warriors entry 150 RMB, metro 14 RMB return, lunch in Muslim Quarter 40-60 RMB, street food snacks 30-40 RMB. City wall bike rental adds 200 RMB. Mid-range hotel nights cost $120-230. Budget hotels from $45-90 if you book the right area.

What are the best luxury hotels in Xi'an?

The Sofitel on Renmin Square is the best centrally located luxury option at $265-420/night, with Tang Dynasty architectural motifs and the best restaurant in the city. The Suites Xi'an near the North City Wall has just 28 rooms in a converted heritage courtyard from $310-520/night. Both require advance booking.
