Where to Stay in Westpunt

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

The West Coast Beach Circuit

Five main beaches run along the southwest coast from Westpunt village south to Cas Abao. Playa Forti is the northernmost (cliff diving, bar). Knip Beach (Playa Kenepa Grandi) is 4km south: the photogenic curved bay. Klein Knip (Kenepa Chiki) is 2km further: smaller and often quieter with better snorkeling. Cas Abao is 15km south of Westpunt: the most organized beach with $5 entry fee, facilities, and consistent water quality.

The full circuit takes half a day: drive south from Westpunt, stop at each beach, swim and snorkel, return for sunset at Playa Forti. Don't try to have a full swim at every stop: pick two main swimming beaches (Klein Knip and Cas Abao recommended) and view the others from the cliff tops.

Beach timing: Cas Abao and Knip get cruise-ship day visitors from 10am-3pm on days when large ships are in Willemstad. Check cruise schedules at the Willemstad port. Arriving before 9am or after 4pm avoids the crowds. On non-cruise days, these beaches are quiet even in high season.

Diving the Westpunt Walls

The west coast of Curacao has some of the Caribbean's best wall diving, accessible directly from shore. Watamula on the north coast (10 minutes from Westpunt) has a dramatic wall starting at 5m dropping to 40m with large barrel sponges and black coral colonies. Car Pile is a purpose-sunk artificial reef 15 minutes south of Westpunt.

Oasis Dive Resort in Westpunt is a small, owner-operated dive shop with intimate group sizes (max 6 per guide). Shore dives at $50 per person. Two-tank boat dives $75. Equipment rental $20. PADI Open Water from $350. Unlike the larger Willemstad operators, Oasis uses local divemasters who grew up diving these walls.

Non-divers: snorkeling at Klein Knip and the entry area at Cas Abao Beach has excellent coral in 2-5 meters visibility. Rental fins and mask from beach concessions at $15-20. The coral around the rocky headlands at both beaches is in better condition than many Caribbean alternatives.

Shete Boka: The Wild North Coast

Shete Boka National Park protects 10km of the rugged north coast between Westpunt and the village of St. Willibrordus. The Atlantic swells hit this coast with full force year-round, creating blowholes, sea caves, and wave-carved bowls in the ironshore rock. It's a different Curacao from the calm, turquoise south beaches.

The park entrance is on the main road (Boka Tabla is the most dramatic stop). Walk down the path to the sea cave and stand on the ledge as waves surge and crash below your feet. The sea turtle nesting beaches at Boka Pistol and Boka Wandomi are accessible by walking the park circuit. Green and loggerhead turtles nest June-October.

Combine Shete Boka with Knip Beach: both are within 15km of Westpunt. Morning at Shete Boka (no crowds), afternoon at Klein Knip Beach (calmer conditions). The contrast between the wild north coast and the turquoise south is Curacao's most complete day experience.

Willemstad: The Day Trip

Willemstad is 50km east (45-60 minutes drive) and worth a day from the Westpunt base. The UNESCO-listed Punda district has the famous pastel Dutch colonial buildings on the Handelskade waterfront: the most photographed Caribbean cityscape. The Queen Emma Bridge (pontoon bridge that swings open for ships) connects Punda and Otrobanda and is free to cross.

Floating Market on the Punda side has Venezuelan vendors selling fresh produce from their boats, operating since the 1930s. Catch it before noon when vendors start packing up. Marshe Bieu (Old Market) in Punda has local food stalls serving Curacao dishes from $8-15: a better lunch than any tourist restaurant nearby.

Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda ($15 entry) traces the African slave trade through the Caribbean and is one of the most thoughtful and comprehensive museum experiences in the region. 3-4 hours minimum.

Budget Curacao: How to Do the West Coast for Less

Bahia Apartments Westpunt ($55) and Westpunt Guesthouse ($70) are the budget anchors. Self-catering apartments mean you're not paying restaurant prices for three meals: the supermarkets in Willemstad (Janssen & Janssen and Centrum) stock everything you need for $15-20/day in groceries.

The free beaches (Playa Forti, Knip on weekdays, Klein Knip) don't charge entry. Shete Boka is $10. Snorkel gear rental at $15-20 for a full day beats paying $50 for a snorkel tour. A rental car ($35-40/day) is the biggest daily expense but enables you to explore freely without paying tour prices.

Happy hour at Jaanchie's Restaurant in Westpunt village (4-6pm) has Amstel Bright beer at $2.50. Kalki Beach on the bay has the most affordable beach bar pricing on the west coast: $4-6 beers, $10-12 sandwiches.

Westpunt's best neighborhoods

Westpunt (literally 'west point') is the rugged western tip of Curacao, 50km from Willemstad. The landscape is dramatic: low thorny vegetation, sea cliffs, and beaches carved into bays. Knip Beach (Playa Kenepa) is the island's most photographed. Cas Abao is the best-maintained. Playa Forti has a cliff where locals dive into the sea. The area has fewer tourists than the capital and eastern beaches.

Westpunt Village & Northern West Coast 4 vetted hotels

Most dramatic scenery, cliff diving, Shete Boka access. Quietest area.

Westpunt village is the small settlement at the very tip of Curacao's west coast. Oasis Dive Resort and Kalki Beach Apartments sit here, with Playa Forti (cliff diving) within walking distance. The village has one main road, Jaanchie's restaurant, and a basic local shop.

Playa Forti Cliff Lodge ($145) offers the most dramatic setting: cliff-edge accommodation above the sea. Westpunt Guesthouse ($70) is the budget alternative with basic but clean rooms. The beach at Westpunt itself (Kalki Beach) is a calm bay excellent for swimming and snorkeling.

Access to Shete Boka National Park (10 minutes drive east) and the northern wild coast is easiest from here. The landscape around Westpunt is dryer and more dramatic than the southern beaches.

Knip & Klein Knip Area 2 vetted hotels

Best beaches on the island. Kura Hulanda Lodge above Klein Knip.

The Knip area sits 10km south of Westpunt along the coast road. Kura Hulanda Lodge ($265) has direct cliff access to Klein Knip Beach below. Lagun Cliff Hotel ($160) is near the fishing village of Lagun, 5km south of Knip.

Knip Beach (Playa Kenepa Grandi) is the most photogenic beach: a curved bay with cliffs on three sides and turquoise water that photographs like a postcard. It's free on weekdays, $5 entry on weekends when the parking attendant is present. The snorkeling around the headlands is excellent.

Klein Knip (2km west of Knip) is smaller and usually quieter. The reef immediately off the beach has good coral in 2-5 meters. Kura Hulanda Lodge guests have morning exclusive access before public visitors arrive.

Best for Best beaches, snorkeling, luxury
Price range $55-310/night
Knip Beach 5-10 min walk from area hotels
Snorkeling Klein Knip reef, 2-5m depth
Cas Abao & St. Willibrordus 2 vetted hotels

Best-maintained beach resort. Coral Estate luxury and Cas Abao access.

Cas Abao Beach is 15km south of Westpunt and considered the island's most consistently excellent beach. The $5 entry maintains the facilities and limits crowds. Coral Estate Luxury Resort ($185) is nearby, with its own beach and spa access.

The St. Willibrordus fishing village on the bay has a different character from the resort beaches: working boats, a small church, and local fishing community. Lagun Cliff Hotel serves this middle zone between the northern Westpunt beaches and Cas Abao.

Cas Abao snorkeling: the reef along the western headland of the bay has excellent coral in 3-8 meters with good visibility. Umbrella rental at $10/day. The beach bar serves food until 5pm. In peak season (December-April), arrive before 10am to get a good position.

Best for Families, best beach facilities
Price range $120-310/night
Cas Abao Beach $5 entry, best facilities

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Westpunt.

beach

Cas Abao has the best facilities (umbrellas, bar, restrooms, $5 entry). Knip Beach has the best scenery (curved bay, cliffs). Klein Knip has the best snorkeling (reef in 2-5m). Playa Forti has the cliff jump. The west coast packs 4 distinctly different beach experiences within 15km.

romantic

Kura Hulanda Lodge above Klein Knip Beach has cliff-top infinity pool at $265. Sunset from Playa Forti with the sun dropping below the horizon to the west is one of the Caribbean's most accessible romantic evening experiences. Dinner at the Lodge restaurant with Klein Knip lit by the last light is $60-80 per couple.

budget

Bahia Apartments at $55/night has self-catering kitchen for cheap cooking. Knip Beach entry is free on weekdays. Snorkel rental at $15-20 per day. Rental car at $35/day. Jaanchie's for lunch at $12-18. A 5-night west coast trip in a self-catering apartment, renting a car, and eating at local restaurants runs $500-700 total per person.

culture

Westpunt has its own distinct Afro-Caribbean cultural identity separate from the Dutch colonial capital. Jaanchie's Restaurant (since 1937) is the local institution. The Venezuelan fishing community along the west coast has lived here for generations. Shete Boka's sea turtle nesting beaches are significant for local conservation.

foodie

Jaanchie's Restaurant in Westpunt village is a Curacao institution: iguana stew, fresh-caught wahoo, and coconut cake at $12-20 per dish. It opened in 1937 and still uses traditional recipes. The Floating Market in Willemstad (45 min drive) has Venezuelan fresh produce from $1-3. Marshe Bieu (Old Market) does Keshi Yena (cheese stuffed with spiced meat) for $10.

family

Cas Abao Beach has shallow entry for children, lifeguards, and organized facilities. The Curacao Ostrich Farm near Willemstad (20 min from west coast) has guided tours with feeding, $12/person. Shete Boka sea caves and blowholes are exciting for children but need supervision near the cliff edges.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Lowest Price

Hurricane Adjacent (Sep-Nov)

28-32°CHotels: $55-185/nightCuracao rarely hitCheapest rates

Technically the Caribbean hurricane season but Curacao (12 degrees north latitude) is too far south for direct hits. Humidity is higher and occasional rough seas affect north coast sites. Diving at sheltered west coast sites continues without interruption. Hotel prices are at annual lows. A few smaller operations reduce service. Best value period for budget travelers.

Festivals

Easter & Carnival (Feb-Mar)

28-31°CHotels: 30% premiumCarnival WillemstadBook 2 months ahead

Curacao Carnival in February-March is one of the Caribbean's most colorful. The main events are in Willemstad but parties spread island-wide. Easter brings increased visitors from the Netherlands and Europe. Prices in this period are 20-30% above the surrounding weeks. Book early if dates overlap with either event.

Booking Tips for Westpunt

Insider tips for booking hotels in Westpunt.

Rent a car the moment you land

Curacao airport (CUR) has car hire desks at arrivals. $35-55/day. Book ahead in high season: they do run out. Without a car, you're dependent on infrequent buses (every 2 hours between Willemstad and Westpunt) or expensive taxis ($40-50 one way from the airport to Westpunt). The rental car is the single most important logistics decision for a west coast Curacao trip.

Check cruise ship schedules for beach timing

Willemstad receives large cruise ships 3-5 days per week during high season. Day passengers typically hire taxis to Cas Abao and Knip Beach, arriving around 10am and leaving by 3:30pm. Check the Curacao Port Authority schedule (portofcuracao.com) and either arrive before 9am or after 4pm on cruise days. The difference between a cruise day crowd and a non-cruise day at Knip Beach is significant.

Diving certification on Curacao saves money

A PADI Open Water certification at Oasis Dive Resort in Westpunt ($350-400) is cheaper than equivalent courses in the UK, Netherlands, or US by $100-200. The west coast conditions are excellent for learning: calm water, good visibility, and experienced local divemasters. If you're considering certification, doing it in Curacao on a longer stay makes financial sense.

Sunscreen rules at Cas Abao

Cas Abao Beach and several other Curacao beaches now request biodegradable sunscreen only to protect coral reefs. Standard chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, octinoxate) bleach and kill coral in snorkeling areas. Buy mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) before traveling or at Willemstad pharmacies. A tube runs $10-15. The reef at Cas Abao and Klein Knip is in noticeably better condition than Caribbean beaches where chemical sunscreen is unrestricted.

Jaanchie's for the local food experience

Jaanchie's Restaurant at the end of Westpunt village has operated since 1937 and serves the most authentic Curacao cooking on the island. Iguana stew (if available: check on arrival, it sells out), wahoo (local fish) grilled with garlic, and cornmeal cakes. Arrive for lunch at noon. The restaurant seats about 40 people in an open-air terrace and fills up by 12:30pm with a mix of locals and tourists who've done their research.

Playa Forti cliff jump: assess conditions first

The 10-meter jump at Playa Forti is a legitimate local tradition but requires assessment before committing. Check that the water below is clear and deep enough (visibility from the top). Watch locals jump first and note their landing zone. Atlantic swells occasionally create surge at the base of the cliff that makes exit difficult. The bar and restaurant above the cliff charges $5 parking. Best time: midday when swells are calm.

Hotels in Westpunt — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Westpunt.

Why choose Westpunt over Willemstad?

Westpunt has the island's best beaches and most dramatic scenery. Willemstad is the UNESCO-listed colonial capital with the famous colorful Dutch buildings: great for a day or two but the beaches nearby are mediocre. The west coast has Knip, Cas Abao, and Klein Knip within 15km, all with the turquoise water and coral cliffs that define Curacao. Base in Westpunt for beaches, Willemstad for architecture and food.

What is the best beach in Curacao?

Cas Abao is the most consistently excellent: maintained facilities (restrooms, bar, umbrellas), clear turquoise water, good reef for snorkeling, $5 entry fee to keep it clean. Knip Beach (Playa Kenepa Grandi) is the most beautiful visually: a curved bay with cliffs on both sides, free on weekdays. Klein Knip (Playa Kenepa Chiki, 2km west) is smaller and often less crowded with better snorkeling coral.

Is Curacao good for diving?

One of the Caribbean's best dive destinations. The Curacao lace coral (pillar coral and sheet coral formations) is exceptional, and the west coast wall dives at Westpunt start in 5 meters and drop to 40m. Visibility runs 20-30m on calm days. Oasis Dive Resort in Westpunt and several Willemstad operators offer PADI courses from $350 and fun dives from $50. No strong currents on the west coast, good for beginners.

How do you get around Westpunt?

A rental car is essential. Westpunt is 50km from Willemstad and buses run infrequently (once every 2 hours). Car hire from the airport (Hato International, code CUR) costs $35-55/day. The main road between Willemstad and Westpunt (the west side of the island) is well-maintained. Many west coast beaches require short dirt-road access. A standard car is fine for all of them.

What is the best time to visit Curacao?

October to June is the dry season with reliable sunshine. July-September has slightly higher humidity and occasional afternoon showers but remains warm and mostly sunny. December-April is peak season: lowest humidity, clearest diving visibility, highest hotel prices. Curacao sits outside the main hurricane belt (below 12 degrees north latitude), so it's rarely directly hit. September-October is technically possible but some Caribbeans close or reduce service.

Is Curacao expensive?

Less expensive than Aruba and much less than St. Barths. Budget west coast guesthouses run $55-80. Mid-range beach resorts cost $120-190. Kura Hulanda Lodge at Knip beach runs $265. Meals at local restaurants (snèk, lunchrooms): $8-15. Supermarkets in Willemstad are well-stocked and cheaper than beach resort stores. Diving and snorkeling gear rental: $20-30/day. Overall: 20-30% cheaper than equivalent Aruba options.

What is the Shete Boka National Park?

Shete Boka (Seven Inlets) National Park covers the north coast near Westpunt: 7 rocky coves where Atlantic swells crash into caves and blow holes. The park entrance is $10. Boka Tabla has a sea cave you can walk into, with waves crashing below your feet. The rugged northern coastline is completely different from the calm turquoise south coast. Drive the park loop (12km) and stop at every inlet. Takes 2-3 hours.

Can you cliff dive at Playa Forti?

Yes. Playa Forti has a 10-meter concrete diving platform where locals and tourists jump into the sea below. Free to use, though the bar and restaurant above the cliff charges for parking and food. The jump is into open sea with waves, not a calm pool, so assess conditions before committing. The view from the cliff top over the bay is excellent regardless of whether you jump. Best visited at sunset.

Are there good restaurants near Westpunt?

The west coast has limited restaurant options outside the resorts. Jaanchie's Restaurant in Westpunt village has been serving local Curacao cuisine since 1937: iguana stew (if offered), fresh fish, and goat curry from $12-20. It's a genuine local institution. Cas Abao Beach has a bar with snacks. For a full restaurant evening, drive 30-40 minutes to Willemstad or the resorts near Piscadera Bay.

What is Kura Hulanda and is it worth the price?

Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club ($265) sits directly above Klein Knip Beach with cliff-top infinity pool and private beach path. The museum at the main Kura Hulanda property in Willemstad (slavery and African heritage) is one of the most significant in the Caribbean. The Lodge property is a different operation, focused on the Klein Knip beach access and peaceful atmosphere. For the location and quality, $265 is reasonable for the Caribbean.
