Libreville is where most people start and, for a lot of travelers, where they stay. The city sits on the Gabon Estuary, and the Quartier Glass seafront strip along Boulevard du Bord de Mer is genuinely pleasant in the evenings. The Radisson Blu and Le Meridien Re-Ndama anchor the top end here, while Hotel Le Dialogue handles the budget crowd in Centre-Ville without embarrassing itself.

Traffic on Avenue Triomphal Omar Bongo can add 20-40 minutes to any cross-city trip during rush hour. mornings especially. Choose your neighborhood based on where you actually need to be. Business travelers want Quartier Glass or Mont-Bouet; anyone visiting the Musée National or the cathedral should look at Centre-Ville.

Don't book anything in the Nkembo district online without reading recent reviews. Photos tend to flatter. The area is far enough from the center that you'll spend more on taxis than you saved on the room.

Port-Gentil is on Mandji Island, which means there's no road from Libreville. You fly or ferry, full stop. Lambaréné sits on the Ogooué River roughly 250km southeast of Libreville, and the drive takes about 4 hours on the RN1 when conditions are good. Île Lambaréné is the residential island in the middle of town, connected to the mainland by a short bridge. Hotel du Parc Lambarene is there, right on the water.

The Albert Schweitzer Hospital and Museum is 10 minutes on foot from the hotel. it's the main draw for most visitors and it's legitimately interesting, not just historically significant. Gamba sits at the edge of Loango National Park in southwestern Gabon, a 90-minute flight from Libreville. There are no paved roads connecting it to anywhere useful. At $155-210/night, you're paying for location more than luxury. It has a generator for power cuts, a restaurant that locals actually use, and a reliable booking process. things you can't take for granted this far from Libreville. The hotel is about 8 minutes walk from the central Marché d'Oyem.

Getting here means a 5-6 hour drive from Libreville on the N2 via Kango and Mitzic, or a domestic flight. The road is tarred most of the way but deteriorates north of Mitzic. A 4WD is strongly recommended in any month. and essential June-September when the northern rains linger.
