Where to Stay in Gambia

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel. Here's what you need to know.

Atlantic Coast: which strip is right for you?

The tourist belt runs roughly 20 km from Bakau in the north down to Brufut in the south. Kololi and the Senegambia Strip are the liveliest: restaurants, craft markets, beach bars, and taxis at every corner. Kotu, just 10 minutes south by road, has the same beach access with about half the noise.

Bakau suits travellers who want something more local. You're near Kachikally Crocodile Pool, Atlantic Road has actual Gambian restaurants rather than tourist menus, and the rates are noticeably lower. But don't expect a resort vibe. Bakau is a working neighbourhood, and that's the point.

Inland Gambia: Makasutu and the River

Most visitors never leave the coast. Big mistake. Makasutu Culture Forest on the South Bank is one of the most atmospheric places in West Africa, 45 minutes from Kololi along the South Bank Road. Mandina Lodges and Sunbird Safari Lodge both sit right in or beside the forest and offer guided walks, pirogue rides, and birdwatching that you simply can't replicate at a beach resort.

Tendaba Camp in the Central River Region takes it further: it's around 160 km east of Banjul, accessible by road in about 3 hours. You're deep into rural Gambia here, with hippo-spotting boat trips on the River Gambia and almost zero other tourists. It's not for everyone, but if it's for you, you'll know immediately.

Gambia hotels: what the photos won't tell you

The most common complaint we see: 'the beach wasn't what I expected.' Plenty of hotels along Coastal Road and the Senegambia Strip use sunset photos taken at a specific angle that makes them look steps from the water. Check Google Maps satellite view for any hotel before booking, and count the roads between the property and the shoreline.

Second thing to watch: older hotels that haven't renovated. The Gambia tourism boom peaked in the early 2000s, and some properties near Kotu Stream and the northern end of Kololi are still running on that era's infrastructure. A rating below 7.5 on recent reviews usually signals this problem. We cut anything that matched this pattern.

Getting around the tourist strip without a car

Green tourist taxis cover the whole coastal belt and are your main tool. A ride from Kololi to Bakau costs roughly 150-250 GMD. From Kololi down to Brufut is 200-300 GMD. Agree on the price before you get in. Your hotel receptionist can tell you a fair rate for any specific trip. use that as your reference.

For longer trips to Banjul city centre (roughly 30 km from Kololi), AFTU minibuses run from Westfield Junction in Serekunda for about 25 GMD and take 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. It's not luxury, but it's how locals move. Taxis direct to Banjul from the strip cost 600-800 GMD and are door-to-door.

Gambia for birdwatchers: where to base yourself

Gambia punches far above its weight for birding. Over 560 species have been recorded in a country smaller than Yorkshire. Bijilo Forest Park, right on the edge of Kololi, has 50+ species in a 1-hour morning walk. Base yourself at a hotel in Kololi or Brufut and you can be inside Bijilo at 6am without a taxi.

For serious birders, Sunbird Safari Lodge near Makasutu is the insider choice. It's named for the birds, not incidentally. The lodge sits beside Makasutu's tidal creeks and the adjacent wetlands, and a local guide out of the lodge will show you birds that simply don't appear on the coast. Budget $140-200/night, and it's worth every dalasi.

What to know about Gambia's rainy season

June through October is rainy season. That sounds alarming, but 'rainy season' in Gambia mostly means afternoon downpours, not all-day grey misery. Hotels drop to their lowest rates. sometimes 40-50% below peak prices. Makasutu and the forest lodges are actually stunning in the green season, if you're not bothered by mud.

The coast is a different story. Some beach-focused hotels in Kololi partially close or cut services, restaurants on the Senegambia Strip thin out, and the beach itself can get rough. If you're coming primarily for the Atlantic, stick to November-April. If the forest and river are your focus, the rains won't stop you.

Explore Gambia by city

We cover 3 destinations across Gambia. Pick a city for a dedicated hotel guide with neighborhoods, seasonal tips, and our vetted picks.

Gambia's best hotel regions

Start on the Atlantic Coast strip: Kololi, Kotu, and Bakau give you beaches, restaurants, and easy taxi access all in one go. If you want something wilder, Makasutu and the South Bank are worth the extra travel time.

Atlantic Coast: Kololi & Kotu 2 vetted hotels

The beating heart of Gambia's tourist strip.

Kololi is where most visitors end up, and there's a reason. The Senegambia Strip along Bertil Harding Highway has restaurants, beach bars, craft markets, and a nightlife scene that doesn't quit until 2am. Kotu, just 10 minutes north by taxi, runs quieter. same beach access, fewer touts, and better birding along Kotu Stream.

Bungalow Beach Hotel sits right in Kololi, 5 minutes walk from the strip's main craft market and 8 minutes to the beach. Badala Park Hotel in Kotu is the better value play: $65-95/night, pool, and a peaceful stretch of Kotu Beach that doesn't get overrun. For the price difference between Kololi and Kotu, Kotu wins for most travellers.

The main thing to watch here is noise. Rooms facing Bertil Harding Highway in Kololi get traffic noise from 6am. Ask specifically for a garden-facing or pool-facing room when you book. it makes a genuine difference.

Best areas Senegambia Strip, Kotu Beach Road
Price range $65-155/night
Best for First-timers, beach breaks, nightlife
Avoid Highway-facing rooms in Kololi
Best months November-February

Bakau & Cape Point 1 vetted hotel

Local Gambia, genuine prices, no resort polish.

Bakau is the northernmost point of the tourist belt and the most authentically Gambian neighbourhood in the mix. Atlantic Road runs through the heart of it, lined with local chop houses, fish sellers, and the famous Kachikally Crocodile Pool just a 10-minute walk from most guesthouses. It's not a resort area. it's a real place.

Leybato Guest House sits in Bakau at Cape Point, a 12-minute walk from the Kachikally Pool and about 15 minutes on foot to the beach. At $45-75/night it's the most affordable vetted option in the country. The trade-off is basic facilities and no pool. But you're eating at local restaurants for 150-200 GMD a meal rather than $15 tourist buffets.

Ngala Lodge at Cape Point is the other end of the Bakau spectrum: $125-185/night, boutique rooms, and a clifftop garden above the Atlantic. These two properties illustrate why Bakau is interesting. you've got backpacker prices and boutique luxury within 10 minutes walk of each other on the same stretch of coast.

Best areas Cape Point, Atlantic Road
Price range $45-185/night
Best for Budget travellers, culture, local food
Avoid Any listing claiming 'beachfront' without verifying distance
Best months November-March

Brufut & Bijilo 2 vetted hotels

The upmarket end of the coastal road.

Brufut Heights and the Bijilo Beach stretch are where Gambia's better-funded resorts cluster. Coco Ocean Resort and Spa at Bijilo Beach is the most consistently excellent hotel on the coast at $175-240/night. Sheraton Gambia in Brufut Heights pushes to $260-380/night and is the closest thing to an international standard luxury resort in the country.

Kombo Beach Hotel sits on Coastal Road in Brufut at $110-165/night and has the best beach position of any mid-range option we reviewed. You're on a quieter stretch of the Atlantic away from the Kololi crowds, with the Bijilo Forest Park 10 minutes by taxi if you want a morning walk. This area rewards travellers who want proper beach time without constant hustle.

The downside: you're 20-25 minutes from the Senegambia Strip's restaurants and nightlife by taxi, which adds up. If you're happy to eat at the resort most nights, it's not a problem. If you want to explore, factor in 300-400 GMD per taxi round-trip.

Best areas Bijilo Beach, Brufut Heights
Price range $110-380/night
Best for Couples, luxury travel, beach focus
Avoid Booking 'Brufut area' without confirming exact distance to beach
Best months December-February

Makasutu & South Bank 2 vetted hotels

Forest, river, and zero beach tourists.

The South Bank sits across the River Gambia from the tourist coast and feels like a different country. Makasutu Culture Forest covers around 1,000 hectares of tidal forest, wetlands, and mangroves. and two of our best-rated hotels sit right inside it. You're 45 minutes from Kololi by road, but the psychological distance is much greater.

Mandina Lodges charges $310-450/night and earns every dollar. Your room is a lodge on stilts over a tidal creek, surrounded by mangroves and birdlife. Sunbird Safari Lodge is the more affordable option at $140-200/night, with guided forest walks and canoe trips that beat anything you'll find on the coast. Both cater to couples and wildlife-focused travellers.

Don't expect beach time here. The nearest Atlantic beach is a 45-minute drive. Come for the forest, stay for the silence, and accept that your evening entertainment is watching egrets land at dusk rather than cocktails on a strip. That's the whole point.

Best areas Makasutu Forest, South Bank Road
Price range $140-450/night
Best for Wildlife, birdwatching, romantic stays
Avoid Coming here if beach access is a priority
Best months October-February
Browse all Makasutu & South Bank hotels →
Central River Region: Tendaba 1 vetted hotel

Deep Gambia, far from the tourist trail.

Tendaba sits roughly 160 km east of Banjul on the south bank of the River Gambia. Getting there takes about 3 hours by road. It's a genuine commitment, and travellers who make it are rewarded with hippo boat trips, rare bird sightings, and a version of Gambia that hasn't been smoothed out for tourism.

Tendaba Camp at $150-210/night is the only vetted option in this region, and it's designed for families and wildlife enthusiasts rather than luxury seekers. The camp itself sprawls along the riverbank with walking trails, a small pool, and guided excursions onto the River Gambia. Kids old enough to spot a hippo will remember this trip for years.

The nearest town with any services is Kwinella, about 20 km away. Stock up on anything you need in Banjul before you head out. Mobile data is patchy along this stretch of the river, and that's genuinely part of the appeal.

Best areas Tendaba riverbank, Kiang West National Park nearby
Price range $150-210/night
Best for Families, wildlife, off-grid travel
Avoid Coming here without at least 2 nights. not worth the 3-hour drive for one night
Best months November-March

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Gambia.

Romantic Escape

Makasutu Forest on the South Bank is the pick. River lodge rooms over the creek, candlelit dinners, no crowds and no noise except the forest itself at night.

Culture & History

Bakau is the most authentically Gambian neighbourhood in the tourist belt. Kachikally Crocodile Pool, Albert Market in Banjul 30 minutes by taxi, and real local restaurants on Atlantic Road rather than tourist menus.

Family Adventure

Tendaba on the River Gambia is built for families who want something more than a pool. Hippo boat trips, open riverside grounds, and birdwatching walks that even 10-year-olds stay awake for.

Budget Travel

Bakau delivers the best value on the coast: guesthouses from $45/night, local restaurants at 150-200 GMD a meal, and beach access 15 minutes on foot. Your money goes about 3× further here than in Kololi.

Beach & Sun

Bijilo Beach just south of the Senegambia Strip is the cleanest and least crowded stretch on the tourist belt. Coco Ocean Resort sits right on it, and the sand stays clear even in peak season.

Food & Local Life

Serekunda Market and the surrounding streets are where Gambians actually eat. Domoda, benachin, and fresh Atlantic fish at 100-200 GMD a plate, 15 minutes from Kololi by taxi.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Gambia. Most got cut fast. Half the beachfront listings aren't actually on the beach. the ocean is a 15-minute walk through a construction site. Plenty of 'eco lodges' near Makasutu Forest are glorified campsites charging resort prices. And too many Senegambia Strip hotels are living off 2015 reputation while the rooms quietly fell apart. We cut anything with inconsistent service, misleading location claims, or a suspiciously photogenic lobby paired with terrible reviews for the standard rooms.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

When to Visit Gambia: Season by Season

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary dramatically. Here's what to expect each season.

Budget Friendly

Rainy Season (Jun-Sep)

Avg hotel: $45-120/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 27-33°C

Afternoon downpours are daily from July through September, and humidity sits above 80%. Some Kololi and Kotu hotels cut services or close rooms. But Makasutu Forest is lush and genuinely beautiful in the green season, and lodge rates at Mandina and Sunbird Safari drop to their lowest of the year. sometimes $140-200/night where dry season runs $200-400/night.

Warming Up

Transition (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $65-150/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 26-33°C

October is the tail end of the rains: mostly dry but occasional showers, especially in the first two weeks. By mid-November the coast clears up and rates are still 15-25% below peak prices. A solid window to get Coco Ocean or Kombo Beach at $110-155/night before December crowds arrive.

How to Book Hotels in Gambia

Smart booking strategies that save money without sacrificing quality.

Book Senegambia Strip hotels directly for the best rate

Most mid-range hotels in Kololi and Kotu offer 10-15% discounts for direct bookings versus OTA prices. Call or email Badala Park or Bungalow Beach directly and ask for their direct rate. It works more often than you'd think, and you'll often get a better room category thrown in.

Confirm exact beach distance before you book

At least 30% of 'beachfront' listings along Coastal Road and the Senegambia Strip are 5-20 minutes walk from the water. Open Google Maps satellite view, drop the pin on the hotel address, and measure the walking route to the nearest beach access point yourself. Don't rely on the property description.

Negotiate taxi fares the Gambian way

Green tourist taxis have no meters. The standard move is to say your destination, wait for their price, then counter at 60-70% of it. You'll usually meet in the middle. For reference: Kololi to Bakau should be 150-250 GMD, and Kololi to Banjul should be 600-800 GMD. Anything above that and you're paying the 'I didn't negotiate' premium.

Time the Makasutu lodges for October-November

Mandina Lodges and Sunbird Safari Lodge in Makasutu are at their most dramatic just after the rainy season ends in October. The forest is green, the creeks are full, and bird activity peaks with the arrival of Palearctic migrants. Rates are also 15-25% below December prices. you're looking at $260-350/night versus $380-450/night in peak season.

Don't book Tendaba Camp for just one night

Tendaba is 3 hours from Banjul by road. One night doesn't give you time to settle, do a river boat trip, and get back without feeling rushed. Minimum 2 nights. ideally 3. The Camp's best experiences (dawn hippo watch, evening pirogue trips on the River Gambia) need time to breathe. Book mid-week for the best availability.

Avoid the hotels near Westfield Junction for tourist stays

Westfield Junction in Serekunda is Gambia's main transport hub. It's fine if you're passing through, but hotels in that area are priced for business travellers and long-stay workers, not tourists. and they're 4-6 km from any beach or notable attraction. Stick to the coastal belt from Bakau to Brufut for anything tourism-related.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in Gambia

Straight answers from our team after reviewing hotels across Gambia.

What's the best area to stay in Gambia for first-timers?

Kololi and the Senegambia Strip are the obvious starting point, and for good reason. You're within 10 minutes walk of the beach, surrounded by restaurants on Bertil Harding Highway, and taxis to Banjul run all day for around 200-300 GMD. Kotu is quieter and slightly cheaper, about 15 minutes down the coast road.

When is the best time to visit Gambia?

November through February is the sweet spot. Temperatures sit around 25-30°C, the sky is clear, and you'll actually enjoy the beach. Avoid July and August if you can: humidity hits 85%+, some hotels half-close, and you'll see why the locals call it 'the rains.' Hotel prices during the dry season peak around Christmas week, when rates jump 30-40% across Kololi and Brufut.

How much do hotels in Gambia cost per night?

You can sleep decently from $45-75/night at guesthouses in Bakau. Mid-range hotels along the Senegambia Strip and Coastal Road run $100-165/night. Luxury resorts like Coco Ocean in Bijilo or Sheraton Gambia in Brufut Heights start at $175 and push up to $380/night during peak season.

Is Gambia safe for tourists?

The tourist belt from Bakau down to Brufut is generally safe, especially in daylight. Petty theft and persistent 'bumsters' near Senegambia Strip and Serekunda Market are the main nuisance, not serious crime. Keep your wits about you at night around the taxi rank on Kairaba Avenue, and you'll be fine. Most incidents that get reported are opportunistic, not targeted.

Do I need a visa to visit Gambia?

Citizens of the UK, US, Germany, and most West African ECOWAS nations get visa-free entry for up to 90 days. If you do need a visa, you can get one on arrival at Banjul International Airport in Yundum for around $20-50 depending on nationality. Always double-check with the Gambia Immigration Department before you fly, as rules shift.

What currency is used in Gambia and can I pay by card?

The Gambian Dalasi (GMD) is the local currency. 1 USD gets you roughly 65-68 GMD at the time of writing. Card payments work at larger hotels like Sheraton and Coco Ocean, but smaller guesthouses and local restaurants in Bakau and Serekunda are cash-only. Pull GMD from the ATMs on Kairaba Avenue rather than exchanging at the airport, where rates are weak.

How do I get from Banjul Airport to the hotels?

Banjul International Airport sits in Yundum, about 25 km from Kololi. A licensed taxi to the Senegambia Strip costs around 800-1,200 GMD and takes 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. Pre-arranged hotel transfers are usually $20-30 and worth it on arrival. Skip the unlicensed touts outside the terminal. they're louder but not cheaper.

Which Gambia hotels are best for families?

Tendaba Camp in the Central River Region is built for families, with open grounds, boat trips on the River Gambia, and wildlife walks that kids actually remember. If you want to stay coastal, Badala Park Hotel in Kotu has a large pool area and sits a 5-minute walk from Kotu Beach, away from the louder Senegambia Strip scene.

What's the best luxury hotel in Gambia?

Mandina Lodges in Makasutu Forest is the most special stay in the country, full stop. Rates run $310-450/night, but you're sleeping in river lodges over a tidal creek in the middle of Makasutu Forest, 45 minutes from the coast. If you want luxury with a beach, Sheraton Gambia in Brufut Heights at $260-380/night is the most polished resort on the strip.

Are there good budget hotels in Gambia?

Yes. Leybato Guest House in Bakau charges $45-75/night and sits a 10-minute walk from Cape Point and the Atlantic. It's no-frills but clean, and Bakau itself has proper local restaurants on Atlantic Road that aren't priced for tourists. Badala Park in Kotu at $65-95/night is the next step up and probably the best value-for-money on the entire coast.

Can I visit Gambia's national parks as a day trip from coastal hotels?

Abuko Nature Reserve is just 15 km from Kololi. a 25-minute drive and entrance costs around 200 GMD. Bijilo Forest Park is even closer, essentially walkable from hotels on the Senegambia Strip along Bertil Harding Highway. For Makasutu Culture Forest and the River Gambia, budget a full day and arrange transport through your hotel.

Which areas should I avoid when booking hotels in Gambia?

Avoid booking hotels that advertise 'beachfront' anywhere near Serekunda's outskirts without verifying the exact distance on a map. Several properties near the Westfield Junction area use coastal photos that are 3-4 km from the actual hotel. The stretch around Brikama town also has listings that look good online but are 45+ minutes from any beach or tourist facility worth visiting.
