The diving here is exceptional, with house reef access around the clock and one of the best-run dive operations on the island. Rooms range from over-water bungalows to garden units, and the all-inclusive dive packages represent serious value for serious divers. Non-divers may find the property a bit isolated compared to West End, but the snorkeling alone justifies the stay. The staff are experienced and genuinely passionate about the reef.

Service is consistent and the staff can arrange guided tours to the archaeological site.

The spa is one of the best on the island and the on-site restaurant, Sol y Mar, is excellent for fresh seafood. Service is attentive without being intrusive, and the beach in front of the resort is perfectly maintained. This is the top choice on Roatan for couples looking for a proper luxury beach stay.

Where to Stay in Honduras

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel. Here's what you need to know.

Roatan: where to stay and what to skip

West Bay Beach is the best address on the island. Full stop. The beach itself runs about 1 km along the southwest tip, and the reef is close enough to snorkel from shore without a boat. West End, about 3 km northeast along the coast road, has more energy. dive shops, restaurants, and bars on Main Street. but the swimming isn't as good.

Avoid Coxen Hole entirely as a base. It's the island's commercial hub and cruise ship dock, not a place you want to eat or sleep. Sandy Bay is quiet and residential but has limited dining options within walking distance. If you're paying $200+/night, position yourself in West Bay or the French Cay area and you won't regret it.

Copan Ruinas: the mainland's best overnight stop

The town of Copan Ruinas is compact enough to cover on foot. The Parque Central is the social hub, and most restaurants, hotels, and tour offices sit within a 5-minute walk of it. The archaeological site entrance is about 1.5 km east of the park, which is a $2 tuk-tuk or a 20-minute walk down the main road.

Get to the ruins by 8am. The site opens at 8am and serious tour groups from San Pedro Sula and Guatemala start rolling in by 10am. The Hieroglyphic Stairway and the Acropolis feel completely different with a dozen people versus two hundred. Book a hotel in the town center and you can walk over early without any faff.

Lago de Yojoa: the underrated middle stop

Most travelers blow past Lago de Yojoa on CA-5 between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. That's a mistake. The lake sits at about 640 meters elevation, which keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the coast. Birders especially: over 480 species have been recorded around the lake shores, including resplendent quetzals in the cloud forest above.

The north shore around Peña Blanca has the most accommodation options, including Hotel D&D Brewery and Lodge, which brews its own craft beer on site. Pulhapanzak Waterfall is about 15 km north of the lake and absolutely worth a half-day trip. Don't plan on using public transport to get between north shore spots. rent a car or hire a local driver for around $40/day.

Tegucigalpa: where to sleep without the headache

Most visitors treat Tegucigalpa as a transit city, and that's honestly fine. But if you're spending a night, the Centro Histórico around Plaza Morazán and Calle Peatonal is walkable and has genuine character. The Basilica de Suyapa, about 4 km southeast of the center, is worth an hour of your time.

Avoid hotels on the outskirts near Toncontín International Airport unless your flight is genuinely early. The airport sits in a narrow valley and is notoriously prone to diversions. don't position yourself around a connection that might not happen. Budget $45-70/night in the Centro Histórico and spend the savings on dinner at one of the restaurants around Colonia Palmira.

Tela: the quiet beach alternative

Tela Bay doesn't get the attention that Roatan does, but it's a genuine beach destination with a fraction of the prices and crowds. The bay curves around a long stretch of palm-lined sand, and the water is calm enough for kids. Punta Sal National Park sits about 30 km west and is reachable by boat tour from the town dock.

The Garifuna village of Tornabé is 8 km west of Tela along the coast and worth an afternoon visit for the food alone. Fresh tapado (coconut seafood soup) in Tornabé costs around $5-8 and is far better than anything you'll find in Tela town. Stay on or near Tela Bay itself. the town center has restaurants but the atmosphere is on the beach.

How to move between Honduras's regions

Flying is the fastest way to get to Roatan. Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Manuel Gálvez has daily connections from Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, with flight times around 40-50 minutes. The ferry from La Ceiba to Roatan (Galaxy Wave or MV Utila Princess) runs twice daily and takes about 1.5 hours if conditions are good, tickets around $25-30 each way.

On the mainland, direct buses connect San Pedro Sula to Copan Ruinas in about 3 hours ($5-8). Lago de Yojoa is 1.5 hours from San Pedro Sula or 2 hours from Tegucigalpa along CA-5. Tela is 2 hours from San Pedro Sula with several daily Hedman Alas and Viana Clase Oro departures. Book Hedman Alas at least a day ahead for the intercity routes since they fill up fast on weekends.

Explore Honduras by city

We cover 5 destinations across Honduras. Pick a city for a dedicated hotel guide with neighborhoods, seasonal tips, and our vetted picks.

Honduras's best hotel regions

Roatan is the obvious anchor. it's where the best hotels and the clearest water are. But if you skip the mainland entirely, you'll miss Copan Ruinas and Lago de Yojoa, which are genuinely worth two or three nights each.

Roatan & Bay Islands 3 vetted hotels

The best diving in the Caribbean, plus Honduras's top luxury hotels.

Roatan is the anchor of any Honduras beach trip. The island stretches about 48 km end to end, but the action concentrates at West Bay Beach and West End on the southwest side. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs along the south coast, which means house reef snorkeling is genuinely world-class at the right properties.

French Cay, on the southeast side near the airport, is quieter and more dive-focused. West Bay is the premium beach strip, while West End on Main Street has the bars and budget dive operators. Expect to pay $160-480/night for quality in this region. Anything below $80/night on Roatan is usually a significant compromise.

Skip the area around Coxen Hole and Dixon Cove entirely for accommodation. Both are working port towns with traffic, noise, and very little charm. The taxi or golf cart ride from West End to West Bay takes about 10 minutes and costs $3-5, so there's no reason to anchor yourself in the wrong spot.

Best areas West Bay Beach, West End, French Cay
Price range $160-480/night
Best for Diving, beach, luxury, snorkeling
Avoid Coxen Hole, Dixon Cove (port traffic, no beach)
Best months March-May, November-December
Browse all Roatan & Bay Islands hotels →
Copan Ruinas & Western Honduras 2 vetted hotels

Maya ruins, coffee country, and the mainland's most charming town.

Copan Ruinas is the best small town in Honduras. The cobblestone streets around Parque Central have good restaurants, decent hotels at fair prices, and a local energy that most tourist towns lose quickly. The archaeological site itself is 20 minutes on foot from the center, through the Sepulturas residential zone.

Santa Rosa de Copan, about 65 km north on Ruta 11A, is less visited but worth a night if you want to see a working Honduran highland town. It's known for its cigar production and sits at 1,050 meters elevation, meaning comfortable temperatures year-round. Hotels here run $120-155/night and you're not competing with tour groups.

Avoid the stretch of budget guesthouses on the outskirts of Copan Ruinas toward the Guatemala border crossing at El Florido. They target backpackers rushing through and are priced poorly for what they offer. Stay in the town center and pay a bit more for the location.

Best areas Copan Ruinas Town Center, Santa Rosa Hillside District
Price range $100-155/night
Best for Archaeology, culture, coffee, hiking
Avoid Border zone guesthouses near El Florido crossing
Best months November-April

Lago de Yojoa & Central Highlands 2 vetted hotels

Birdwatching, craft beer, and waterfalls on Honduras's largest lake.

Lago de Yojoa sits in a bowl of cloud forest about halfway between San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa on CA-5. At 640 meters elevation, it runs noticeably cooler than the coast, which is a genuine relief from April onward. The north shore around Peña Blanca has the main cluster of accommodation and restaurants.

The lake itself covers about 290 square kilometers and has serious birding credentials. Over 480 species have been recorded in the surrounding area, including at Santa Bárbara National Park to the west. Pulhapanzak Waterfall is 15 km north of the lake and is one of the most impressive natural sights in the country, with a cavern route behind the falls that few visitors bother to find.

Hotel D&D Brewery and Lodge on the north shore is one of the most interesting properties in Honduras. It brews its own craft beer on site and has kayak access to the lake. Budget around $175-230/night and it's a genuinely special stay. The adjacent village of Las Vegas has a Friday market worth walking through if your timing lines up.

Best areas Lago de Yojoa North Shore, Peña Blanca
Price range $55-230/night
Best for Birdwatching, nature, lake activities, craft beer
Avoid CA-5 roadside motels (noise, truck traffic)
Best months December-April
Browse all Lago de Yojoa & Central Highlands hotels →
Caribbean Coast: Tela & La Ceiba 1 vetted hotel

Low-key beaches, Garifuna culture, and access to the Bay Islands ferry.

Tela Bay is the most underrated beach destination on the Honduran coast. The bay has a long curve of calm water backed by palm trees, and prices are a fraction of Roatan. Posada Las Iguanas sits right on the water and is 10 minutes walk from Tela's main Parque Central.

La Ceiba, 100 km east of Tela, functions mainly as the jumping-off point for the Roatan and Utila ferry. The ferry terminal is on Boulevard 15 de Septiembre, and boats leave at 9:30am and 4:30pm daily. If you're catching an early ferry, one night in La Ceiba near the terminal makes logistical sense, but don't extend the stay beyond that.

The Garifuna communities along this coast. Tornabé, Miami, and San Juan. are living culture, not tourist attractions. Visiting respectfully and spending money at local restaurants and cooperatives rather than resort restaurants makes a difference here. The food, especially freshly made hudut (fish and plantain) in Tornabé, is worth the 30-minute drive from Tela.

Best areas Tela Bay waterfront, Tornabé village
Price range $130-180/night
Best for Families, beach, Garifuna culture, ferry access
Avoid La Ceiba city center beyond ferry transit needs
Best months February-May
Browse all Caribbean Coast: Tela & La Ceiba hotels →
Tegucigalpa & Central Honduras 1 vetted hotel

The capital as a transit base, done right.

Tegucigalpa works best as a one-night stop rather than a destination in itself. The Centro Histórico around Plaza Morazán has genuine architecture and a few good restaurants, but most visitors are connecting to somewhere else. Toncontín International Airport is about 7 km south of the center, which is a $8-12 taxi in decent traffic.

Colonia Palmira is the safest and most comfortable neighborhood for visitors, with good restaurants and the embassies of most major countries. It's about 3 km from the Centro Histórico. Budget $45-70/night in the Centro and you're getting honest value for a transit night.

Avoid any hotel advertising 'airport convenience' that isn't actually close to the airport. Toncontín sits in Colonia Kennedy and the surrounding area has minimal dining options. Suyapa, about 4 km southeast of the center, is worth a quick visit for the Basílica de Suyapa, especially if you're there on a weekend when the market around it runs.

Best areas Centro Histórico, Colonia Palmira
Price range $45-70/night
Best for Transit, city exploration, budget travelers
Avoid Boulevard Morazán business hotels (overpriced, no character)
Best months November-April

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Honduras.

Romantic Getaway

West End on Roatan is the call. Las Verandas Hotel puts you in a private villa setting with sunset views over the Caribbean, and dinner at the local seafood spots on Main Street costs a fraction of what you'd pay at a resort restaurant.

History & Culture

Copan Ruinas town center is the obvious anchor. You're 20 minutes walk from one of the most significant Maya sites in the world, and the town itself has the best concentration of local restaurants and artisan shops in western Honduras.

Family Holiday

Tela Bay wins for families on the mainland, with calm shallow water along the bay and direct beach access from Posada Las Iguanas. Kids can wade safely, and the Lancetilla Botanical Garden is 5 km from town for a low-key afternoon.

Budget Travel

Tegucigalpa's Centro Histórico delivers the cheapest vetted beds in Honduras at $45-70/night, a short walk from Plaza Morazán and the city's best comedores. It's a transit hub first, but the price is genuinely hard to beat.

Beach & Diving

West Bay Beach on Roatan is the best beach in Central America for snorkeling from shore, with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef accessible without a boat. French Cay suits dedicated divers who want structured dive programs and house reef access.

Food & Nature

Lago de Yojoa's north shore combines extraordinary birding at dawn with craft beer and fresh lake fish by evening. The Hotel D&D Brewery sits right on the water and serves food alongside its own brews, which is a combination you don't find anywhere else in Honduras.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed 2,000+ options across the main regions of Honduras. Most got cut fast. The Bay Islands have dozens of resorts that photograph beautifully and deliver mediocre service at inflated prices. On the mainland, Tegucigalpa has a glut of business hotels with zero personality. Copan Ruinas has guesthouses that charge boutique rates for budget-hostel conditions. We kept only places with consistent guest experiences, honest pricing, and something that actually makes them worth booking.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

When to Visit Honduras: Season by Season

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary dramatically. Here's what to expect each season.

Peak

Dry Season (Dec-Apr)

Avg hotel: $120-380/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 24-32°C

This is peak season across all regions. Roatan's West Bay Beach and West End fill up fast from late December through January, and rates at quality properties push toward the top of the $160-480/night range. Semana Santa (Holy Week before Easter) is the single busiest week in Honduras. prices spike 30-50% and every decent property in Copan Ruinas and Tela books solid. Book 10-12 weeks out for anything worth staying in.

Budget Friendly

Green Season (Jun-Sep)

Avg hotel: $55-180/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 27-35°C

June through September is rainy season on the Caribbean coast and the interior. Afternoons see heavy showers, and Tela and the north coast can get prolonged wet spells. Roatan is wetter but still diveable, and prices on West Bay drop noticeably. This is the only time you'll reliably find rooms at Infinity Bay or Las Verandas under $250/night. Hurricane season runs June-November, with peak risk in September-October.

Warming Up

Transition (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $70-220/nightCrowds: Low-ModerateTemp: 25-32°C

October is the tail end of hurricane season and often gets overlooked. The interior highlands around Copan Ruinas and Santa Rosa de Copan stay green and lush, and hotel rates sit well below peak across the board. By mid-November things dry out on the Pacific side and the highlands become genuinely pleasant, with Tegucigalpa's Festival de las Luces drawing domestic visitors around November 18-20.

How to Book Hotels in Honduras

Smart booking strategies that save money without sacrificing quality.

Book Copan Ruinas before Semana Santa

Semana Santa (the week before Easter) is the biggest domestic travel week in Honduras. Las Glorietas and Hotel Marina Copan both sell out entirely for this period, often 6-8 weeks in advance. Don't assume you'll find something on arrival. Copan Ruinas has limited quality inventory and the overflow ends up in guesthouses near the El Florido border crossing, which is not where you want to be.

Roatan airport taxis: fix the price first

There's no metered taxi service from Juan Manuel Gálvez Airport. Drivers at the exit door quote whatever they think you'll pay. The fair rate to West End is $15-18 and to West Bay is $20-25 for a private taxi. If you're a couple or small group, that's fine. If you're solo, ask the driver at the information desk inside arrivals to call a shared taxi. it typically costs $8-10 to West End.

Get to the Copan ruins before 9am

The Copan Archaeological Site opens at 8am and tour buses from San Pedro Sula and Guatemala start arriving by 10am. Staying in the town center near Parque Central means you can walk to the site entrance in 20 minutes and have the Hieroglyphic Stairway and Principal Group largely to yourself for the first hour. Entry is $15 for the main site, plus $8 for the Las Sepulturas residential zone.

Lago de Yojoa needs a car or driver

The north shore properties around Peña Blanca and CA-5 are spread out along several kilometers of road. There's no reliable local tuk-tuk or taxi service connecting them. Either rent a car in San Pedro Sula before you arrive (budget $35-50/day for a basic 4x4) or arrange a day driver through your hotel, which typically costs $40-60 for a full day including Pulhapanzak Waterfall.

Caribbean coast hotels: always check the exact beach distance

Several properties in Tela and along the north coast advertise 'beachfront' or 'sea view' in ways that are, let's say, optimistic. Check the hotel pin on Google Maps against the coastline before booking. A genuine beachfront property in Tela Bay should be within 50 meters of the water. Anything beyond 300 meters is not beachfront, regardless of what the listing says.

USD works almost everywhere, but carry small bills

Honduras uses the Lempira (HNL), but USD is accepted at essentially every hotel, resort, and tour operator in Roatan, Copan Ruinas, and Tela. The exchange rate at hotels is typically 24-25 HNL per dollar. ATMs in West End and West Bay dispense Lempiras; bring $100 bills and break them at a bank or supermarket rather than using airport exchange booths, which offer noticeably worse rates.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in Honduras

Straight answers from our team after reviewing hotels across Honduras.

What's the best area to stay in Honduras for first-timers?

Copan Ruinas is the easiest entry point on the mainland. You're within a 10-minute walk of the Copan Archaeological Site, Parque Central, and a solid cluster of restaurants on Calle Principal. If beaches are the priority, fly into Roatan and head straight to West Bay Beach or West End, both within 20 minutes of Juan Manuel Gálvez Airport.

Is Honduras safe for tourists staying at hotels?

In the tourist zones, yes. Stick to Copan Ruinas town center, Roatan's West Bay and West End, and Tela Bay, and you'll have very few issues. Tegucigalpa's Centro Histórico is fine during the day but avoid wandering past Calle Bolívar after dark. San Pedro Sula has a rougher reputation, so we don't recommend it as a base.

When is the best time to book hotels in Honduras?

December through April is dry season and the most popular stretch. Hotel rates on Roatan can jump 40-60% between November and January, so book West Bay and West End properties at least 8-10 weeks out. The shoulder months of May and November offer the best mix of lower prices and decent weather, especially around Lago de Yojoa.

How much do hotels in Honduras cost per night?

Budget options in Tegucigalpa's Centro Histórico start around $45-70/night. Mid-range hotels in Copan Ruinas and Tela Bay run $100-180/night. Roatan's West Bay Beach and West End push into $160-480/night for quality resorts, with the best properties sitting at the top of that range.

Do I need to tip hotel staff in Honduras?

Tipping isn't mandatory but it's genuinely appreciated. A $1-2/night tip left for housekeeping goes a long way. At resort bars and restaurants in West Bay, a 10% tip is standard since service charges aren't always included. Smaller guesthouses in Copan Ruinas and Lago de Yojoa rarely add service fees, so tip directly.

What's the best hotel area in Roatan?

West Bay Beach is the top pick for swimming and snorkeling, with the reef starting just 30-40 meters from shore at spots like Half Moon Bay. West End is 10-15 minutes away and has more restaurants, dive shops, and nightlife on Main Street. If you want quiet and privacy, French Cay on Roatan's southeast side is worth considering.

Is it worth staying near the Copan Ruins?

Absolutely. The town of Copan Ruinas sits about 1.5 km from the entrance to the archaeological site, which is roughly a 20-minute walk or a $2 tuk-tuk ride. Staying in the town center near Parque Central means you can get to the ruins early before tour groups arrive, which makes a real difference. Evening light on the Acropolis from around 4pm is genuinely spectacular.

Are there good family-friendly hotels in Honduras?

Tela Bay is the best mainland option for families, with calm beach conditions and Posada Las Iguanas right on the water. On Roatan, West Bay Beach has shallow reef access ideal for kids, and most resorts there include family room configurations. Budget about $130-220/night for a solid family setup in either location.

Can I get around Honduras without a car?

Between major towns, yes. Buses connect Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Copan Ruinas, and Tela fairly well, and a chicken bus from San Pedro Sula to Copan Ruinas costs under $5. Lago de Yojoa is trickier without a car since the north shore hotels are spread out along CA-5 highway. Roatan is compact enough that golf carts and moto-taxis handle most movement in West End for $1-3 a ride.

Which hotels in Honduras are best for diving?

Roatan is the clear answer. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs along its south side, and French Cay and West Bay have dive operations within walking distance of the best resorts. Coco View Resort in French Cay is specifically built around diving, with house reef access and gear storage on site. Utila is the other option for divers on a budget, though it's not in our current vetted list.

What should I avoid when booking a hotel in Honduras?

Don't book anything advertising 'beachfront' in Tela or La Ceiba without checking exact location on a map. Several properties use that label for spots 500+ meters from the water. On Roatan, avoid anything in Coxen Hole town itself, which is the main port and not a pleasant base. And in Tegucigalpa, skip hotels along Boulevard Morazán unless you specifically need business-district access.

How do I get from the airport to hotels in Roatan?

Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport sits in the middle of the island. A taxi to West End takes about 20 minutes and costs $15-20. West Bay Beach is slightly farther at 25-30 minutes, usually $20-25 by taxi. There's no public bus from the airport, so either arrange a hotel transfer in advance or negotiate a fare at the taxi stand outside arrivals.
