Why These Hotels Made Our List
Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.
Vik Hostel
One of the most affordable beds in Vik, sitting just off the main road near the petrol station and shops. Dorm beds are compact but clean, and private rooms are basic but functional. The communal kitchen is a genuine bonus for travellers cooking their own meals. Staff are friendly and happy to point out hiking trails nearby. Do not expect luxury, but for the price it delivers.

Guesthouse Carina
A small family-run guesthouse on the southern edge of Vik with views toward the black sand beach and Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Rooms are modest but spotlessly clean, and breakfast is included with fresh bread and skyr. The owners know the area well and will tell you exactly when and where to go for the best light at Reynisfjara. Parking is free and easy. It books out fast in summer so reserve early.

Puffin Hotel Vik
The Puffin Hotel is positioned on a slight rise above the village giving rooms on the upper floors clear views toward the ocean and the cliffs. Decor leans into the Iceland-coastal theme without being overdone. The heated floors in the bathrooms are a welcome touch after a cold day on the beach. Staff can arrange glacier hike and ice cave tours directly from the hotel. It is a short flat walk to the black sand beach at Reynisfjara.

Black Beach Suites
Situated almost directly above the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach, these self-contained suites offer uninterrupted Atlantic views from the bedroom windows. The design is minimalist and modern with large glass panels that frame the landscape like a painting. Each suite has its own kitchenette and a small outdoor deck. Noise from the crashing waves is constant, which most guests find soothing rather than disruptive. It is one of the most dramatic locations to sleep on the entire South Coast.

Guesthouse Steig sits on a working farm a short drive east of Vik in the Myrdalur valley with Myrdalsjokull glacier visible from the property. Rooms are simple, warm, and furnished with local wool blankets and wooden furniture. Solheimasandur Guesthouse
Located near the famous DC-3 plane wreck site at Solheimasandur, this guesthouse is a practical and well-priced stop along the Ring Road. Rooms are spacious by South Coast standards and most have private bathrooms. The hosts are experienced guides themselves and can help you plan self-drive routes across the highlands. The kitchen is available for guest use in the evenings. It sits midway between Skogafoss and Vik, making it a smart logistical base.

Icelandair Hotel Vik
The Icelandair Hotel Vik is the most polished full-service hotel in the village, with a well-regarded restaurant, bar, and comfortable rooms finished to a consistently high standard. The lobby design references Icelandic geology with basalt textures and dark tones throughout. Corner rooms on the upper floor have the best views across the lava fields toward the coast. The hotel runs its own tour desk and coordinates northern lights wake-up calls in winter. Service here is a notch above the other options in Vik.

Deplar Farm
Deplar Farm is one of the most exclusive retreats in Iceland, operating as an all-inclusive luxury lodge in the remote Fljot Valley of the Trollaskagi Peninsula. The 13 rooms and suites are designed with a raw, organic aesthetic using natural Icelandic materials throughout. Guests have access to a geothermal pool, spa, gym, and helicopter-accessed skiing on private mountain terrain. Every meal is prepared using Icelandic produce at a standard that rivals top Reykjavik restaurants. The pricing is steep but the experience is genuinely unlike anything else in the country.

Thakgil Retreat and Luxury Cabins
Thakgil is a hidden canyon in the foothills of Myrdalsjokull glacier, roughly 20 kilometres from Vik down a rough gravel road, and the luxury cabins here are among the most secluded stays on the South Coast. Each cabin has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the canyon walls and its own outdoor hot tub fed by natural geothermal water. Interiors are stylishly furnished with wood, stone, and quality linens. There is no restaurant on site so guests bring supplies or arrange catering in advance. The northern lights visibility here on clear nights is exceptional given the total absence of light pollution.
Check AvailabilityWhere to Stay in Vik
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
Vik Village: Small Town, Big South Coast Base
Vik is 300 people and a handful of buildings clustered around the Route 1 junction. The church on the hill is the landmark, the petrol station is the social hub, and the two or three restaurants are always busy. For its size, it functions extremely well as a base. Everything you need is here.
Hotel Katla and Icelandair Hotel are the two best central options. Both have restaurants that save you hunting for food in the dark after a long day of hiking. The village shops stock enough supplies for picnic lunches and self-catered breakfasts.
The main weakness of staying in the village center is the noise from passing Ring Road traffic. Request a room facing away from the road if that matters to you.
Reynisfjara: The Black Beach Experience
Reynisfjara is 10 minutes from Vik on Route 215 and one of the most photographed places in Iceland. The black basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising 66 meters from the surf, and the cave at the western end of the beach combine into a landscape that genuinely looks otherworldly.
Black Beach Suites positions you directly above the beach for views from your bed. Most guests there say the sound of the Atlantic overnight is either sublime or impossible to sleep through. Know yourself before booking.
The sneaker waves here have killed multiple visitors. Stay 30 meters back from the waterline at all times. The ocean here is not a backdrop. It is a hazard.
Thakgil Canyon: Vik's Secret
Most Ring Road travelers drive through Vik without knowing Thakgil exists. The canyon is a 20-kilometer detour on a gravel road requiring 4WD, which filters out the bus tours and keeps it genuinely quiet. The canyon walls rise steeply above a green valley floor, with a campsite and the Thakgil Retreat cabins at the end of the road.
The hiking from Thakgil into the Myrdalur highlands is exceptional and almost entirely uncrowded. Trails lead up into the foothills of Myrdalsjokull glacier with views back across the black lava desert to the sea. Take the circular route from the cabins that takes about 3 hours round trip.
The Thakgil Retreat cabins have private geothermal hot tubs. Sitting in one at night with the canyon walls around you and no artificial light anywhere qualifies as a genuine Icelandic experience.
Chasing the Northern Lights from Vik
Vik is far enough from Reykjavik to have real dark skies. The Kp index needed for visible aurora from this latitude is lower than in the capital. The tourist information site aurora.vedur.is updates forecasts hourly. Check it every evening after 10pm during September to March.
The beach at Reynisfjara is the most dramatic foreground for aurora photography. The sea stacks create a silhouette that makes for powerful compositions. Arrive 30 minutes before forecast peak and do not stand too close to the water, even at night.
Icelandair Hotel Vik offers northern lights wake-up calls. Leave your curtains open in any of the hillside guesthouses and you will likely see activity before you hear a knock.
Driving the South Coast: What to Know
Route 1 west from Vik reaches Skogafoss in 30 minutes, Seljalandsfoss in 40 minutes, and Eyjafjallajokull viewpoints within 45 minutes. East from Vik, the road runs for 2 hours across a lava plain before Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. Plan at least one night in each direction if you want to do both sections properly.
In winter, the section between Vik and Jokulsarlon can be temporarily closed by Vegagerdin (Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration). Check road.is before driving east in January or February. Conditions can change within an hour.
Petrol stations thin out east of Vik. Fill up in the village before driving east for more than 2 hours. The Kirkjubaejarklaustur petrol station is the main stop 70 kilometers east.
Solheimasandur Plane Wreck and Skogar
The DC-3 plane wreck on Solheimasandur beach is 30 minutes west of Vik. Since the private road was closed, reaching it requires a 4-kilometer walk each way across a volcanic desert from the marked parking area on Route 1. Allow 2 hours return.
Skogafoss waterfall, 10 minutes further west in Skogar, drops 60 meters and you can walk right to the base. The stairs beside the falls lead to a viewpoint at the top and connect to the Fimmvorduhals hiking trail toward Eyjafjallajokull. Solheimasandur Guesthouse, between these two sights, is the logical base if you want morning access before the tour coaches arrive.
The Skogar Folk Museum beside the waterfall is one of the better regional museums in Iceland and takes about 2 hours to explore properly.
Vik's best neighborhoods
Vik is a village of fewer than 300 people at the southernmost tip of Iceland's Ring Road. The black sand beach at Reynisfjara and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks are the primary draws. The surrounding area includes Thakgil canyon, Solheimasandur plane wreck, and the ever-present shadow of Katla volcano.
Vik Village Centre 3 vetted hotels Practical South Coast base, restaurants and shops within walking distance
Practical South Coast base, restaurants and shops within walking distance
The village center has all practical amenities: petrol, grocery, pharmacy, and restaurants. Hotel Katla and Icelandair Hotel are the anchor properties. Both have on-site restaurants that are genuinely useful in a place where evening options are limited.
It is the right choice for first-time visitors or those doing a quick South Coast loop. The Ring Road runs through the village so noise is present but manageable. Views from upper-floor rooms face either the church hill or the distant cliffs.
Reynisfjara Area 1 vetted hotel Black sand beach views, sea stacks, the most dramatic location on the South Coast
Black sand beach views, sea stacks, the most dramatic location on the South Coast
Black Beach Suites is the only accommodation sitting directly above Reynisfjara beach. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Atlantic and the Reynisdrangar stacks from the bedroom. The experience is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Iceland.
The beach is 2 minutes on foot from the suites. The restaurant facilities are limited, so you will need to drive to Vik village for dinner. The trade-off is waking up to one of the world's most dramatic coastlines from your own bed.
Thakgil Canyon 1 vetted hotel Remote canyon cabins, private hot tubs, zero light pollution
Remote canyon cabins, private hot tubs, zero light pollution
Thakgil is 20 kilometers from Vik on a 4WD-only gravel road. The Thakgil Retreat cabins sit at the end of it, surrounded by canyon walls that block all road and village noise. Geothermal hot tubs face the canyon. Northern lights visibility here is exceptional.
There is no restaurant, no convenience, no phone signal. That is precisely the point. Bring supplies from Vik before driving in. The hiking from the cabins is some of the best in southern Iceland.
South Coast Rural (Myrdalur / Solheimasandur) 3 vetted hotels Quiet farm guesthouses between Ring Road landmarks, Glacier views
Quiet farm guesthouses between Ring Road landmarks, Glacier views
Guesthouse Steig in the Myrdalur valley, Solheimasandur Guesthouse near the plane wreck, and Deplar Farm (in northern Iceland) represent the rural accommodation spread around the Vik area. Steig and Solheimasandur are working-area guesthouses with farm settings and glacier views.
These options make sense for travelers who want quiet over convenience. You will need a car for everything including restaurants. The compensation is spectacular morning views, lower prices than village hotels, and the occasional Icelandic horse in the field outside your window.
Best Areas by Vibe
Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Vik.
Dramatic Romance
Black Beach Suites above Reynisfjara and Thakgil Retreat cabins in the canyon are the two most romantic stays in the Vik area. Both have floor-to-ceiling glass facing extraordinary landscapes. Thakgil adds a private geothermal hot tub. Both sell out months ahead in summer.
Budget South Coast
Vik Hostel does dorm beds from $55. Guesthouse Carina on the south side of the village comes in at $75-110 with included breakfast and genuine family hospitality. Both are dramatically better value than comparable beds in Reykjavik.
Photographer's Base
Vik is 10 minutes from Reynisfjara, 30 minutes from Skogafoss, and under 2 hours from Jokulsarlon. The golden hour light on the black sand beach and sea stacks is the most photographed scene in Iceland. Icelandair Hotel has northern lights wake-up calls included.
South Coast Explorer
Hotel Katla in the village center is the best family option: on-site restaurant, spacious rooms, central location. The puffin cliffs above Reynisfjara are an easy hike accessible for children April through August. Day drives to Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss work well for families.
Black Sand Beach
Reynisfjara is one of the most striking beaches in the world: black volcanic sand, basalt columns, dramatic sea stacks. Black Beach Suites puts you 100 meters above it. The beach is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. Follow the warning signs.
Icelandic Food
Sudur-Vik restaurant in the village does the best lamb and fish soup in the area for ISK 3,000-4,500. The Icelandair Hotel kitchen is the most reliable evening option. The classic Iceland hot dog at the N1 petrol station costs 600 ISK and is unironically one of the best things you can eat on a cold South Coast evening.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
When to Visit Vik
When to visit Vik and what to pay.
Spring (Apr-May)
Puffins return to the Reynisfjara cliffs in late April. The highlands start opening up but Route 214 to Thakgil may still be closed until late May. Crowds are lighter than summer with better hotel availability. Skies can still produce aurora in April before the nights get too short.
Summer (Jun-Aug)
Midnight sun, maximum daylight, and peak crowds. Hotels in Vik fill 4-6 months ahead for July and August. Reynisfjara beach is crowded by 10am in high season. The upside: roads are open, weather is most reliable, and the puffin colonies are active. Book everything in advance.
Autumn (Sep-Nov)
The best balance of manageable crowds and genuine aurora possibility. September still has reasonable daylight for hiking while the nights are dark enough for northern lights. October brings dramatic storm light and emptier beaches. Hotels are easier to book than summer. Pack for rain and wind.
Winter (Dec-Feb)
Ice cave tours on Myrdalsjokull run most reliably from November through March. The Ring Road east of Vik can close in storm conditions and requires 4WD. Hotels are at their cheapest. Aurora probability is highest. The black beach in winter with a storm rolling in is one of the most powerful landscapes in Iceland.
Booking Tips for Vik
Insider tips for booking hotels in Vik.
Book Vik hotels 4-6 months ahead for summer
July and August accommodation in Vik sells out faster than almost anywhere else in Iceland outside Reykjavik. Black Beach Suites and Thakgil Retreat fill within hours of opening summer availability. Book as soon as you have dates confirmed.
Never turn your back on the ocean at Reynisfjara
The sneaker waves have killed people. They arrive without warning from behind you when you are looking at the sea stacks or taking photos. Stay 30 meters minimum from the waterline. Obey the warning signs. The beach is extraordinary but it is not forgiving.
Check road.is every morning before driving east
Route 1 east of Vik toward Jokulsarlon can close in winter storms with no notice. Check road.is or call the road information line on 1777. Rental car contracts require you to have a 4WD to access any F-roads, and some South Coast mountain tracks require the same.
Download the aurora forecast app before arriving
The Icelandic Met Office aurora app (vedur.is/english) or the standalone Aurora Forecast app gives real-time Kp index and cloud cover forecasts. A Kp of 3 is usually sufficient for visible aurora at Vik's latitude. Check at 10pm when guides know if conditions are building.
The plane wreck hike is 4km each way on gravel
Solheimasandur DC-3 wreck requires an 8km round trip on a flat but exposed volcanic desert. Wear wind-proof layers even in summer. The privately owned road is closed to vehicles. Start before 9am to beat the tour groups. Allow 2 hours minimum.
Thakgil requires 4WD and advance planning
The route to Thakgil Retreat on Route 214 is a gravel mountain road impassable without 4WD. The road closes in winter. Check with the guesthouse before booking to confirm access for your travel dates. Bring food supplies from Vik as there is no restaurant at Thakgil.
Hotels in Vik — FAQ
Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Vik.
What is the best hotel location in Vik, Iceland?
Black Beach Suites above Reynisfjara beach is the most dramatic location. Hotel Katla and Icelandair Hotel Vik are the most practical, sitting in the village center within walking distance of restaurants and shops. If you want total seclusion, Thakgil Retreat is 20km from Vik down a gravel road with private hot tubs and canyon views.
Is Vik a good base for exploring Iceland's South Coast?
Yes. Vik sits at the geographic midpoint of the South Coast driving route. Skogafoss is 30 minutes west. The Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is 2 hours east. Reynisfjara beach is 10 minutes from the village. Seljalandsfoss is 40 minutes west. Most South Coast highlights are within a 2-hour drive in either direction.
Can you see the northern lights from Vik?
Yes, and Vik is actually better positioned than Reykjavik for aurora viewing because of far lower light pollution. The black sand beach at Reynisfjara with the sea stacks in the foreground is one of the most photographed aurora locations in Iceland. The season runs September through March. Icelandair Hotel Vik offers northern lights wake-up calls for guests.
How dangerous is Reynisfjara beach?
Very. The sneaker waves at Reynisfjara are genuinely lethal. At least 10 people have drowned here since 2016. The waves arrive without warning, are extremely powerful, and the undertow is severe. Stand at least 30 meters back from the water line and never turn your back to the ocean. The warning signs are serious. Obey them.
How do you get to Vik from Reykjavik?
It is 186 kilometers on Route 1 (Ring Road), about 2.5 hours by car. There is no direct bus service year-round, though Streto runs a limited Route 51 service in summer. Renting a car in Reykjavik is strongly recommended if you plan to explore beyond the village itself. The drive is straightforward with no challenging terrain.
What is the best time of year to visit Vik?
June and July give you 24-hour daylight and the best weather for hiking. September to November is the prime northern lights window with still-manageable crowds. December and January have the longest nights and best aurora chance but temperatures drop to -5 to -10 Celsius and road conditions require a 4WD for highland routes. February and March are popular for ice cave tours on Myrdalsjokull.
What restaurants are in Vik?
Options are limited by the village size. Sudur-Vik restaurant is the best local option for Icelandic fish soup and lamb. The Icelandair Hotel Vik restaurant is the most polished. Strondin Bistro near the petrol station does quick meals. Expect to pay ISK 3,000-6,000 ($22-44) for a main course. The N1 petrol station sells hot dogs and basic snacks for budget meals.
What should I know about driving to Thakgil canyon?
Thakgil is 20 kilometers from Vik on Route 214, which is a gravel road requiring a 4WD vehicle. The route is impassable in winter and sometimes closed in early spring due to snow. The canyon itself is accessible from late May to October. Thakgil Retreat cabins are the only accommodation here. The drive takes 30-40 minutes from the Ring Road junction and is worth every minute.
Are there puffins near Vik?
Yes. The cliffs above Reynisfjara are one of the most accessible puffin viewing spots on the South Coast. Atlantic puffins nest in the cliff burrows from late April through August. The Puffin Hotel in Vik is named for this. Early morning at the cliffs before tour groups arrive gives you the best chance of seeing them undisturbed.
How much do hotels cost in Vik?
Budget options like Vik Hostel and Guesthouse Carina start around $55-110 per night. Mid-range hotels like Hotel Katla and Icelandair Hotel Vik run $130-249. The luxury end, Thakgil Retreat and Deplar Farm, ranges from $280 to $1,800 per night. Prices in Vik are high for the level of accommodation compared to Reykjavik because demand consistently exceeds supply.
What ice cave tours depart from Vik?
Several operators run ice cave tours into Myrdalsjokull glacier from Vik or nearby. Guide to Iceland and Extreme Iceland both have departures. Tours cost approximately ISK 12,000-18,000 ($85-130) per person and run most reliably from October through March. The Puffin Hotel and Icelandair Hotel both have tour desks that can book directly. Blue ice caves are only safely accessible in winter.
What areas near Vik should I skip?
The basic guesthouses along the main N1 stretch in Vik village that have no insulation and no views are not worth the mid-range prices they charge in summer. Avoid booking anything that does not clearly state room type and heating. Also, skip the tourist-trap wool shops on the main road selling mass-produced Scandinavian goods at premium Iceland prices. The real handknitted lopapeysa sweaters are found at the Icelandic wool shop at the Skogafoss tourist center, 30 minutes west.
