Where to Stay in Jakarta

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First time in Jakarta? Start here.

Pick a hotel on or near Jalan Thamrin or Jalan Sudirman. These two roads are Jakarta's spine and every major attraction, mall, and MRT stop radiates from them. You'll spend a third less on transport than someone staying in, say, Kemang or Pluit.

Grab the MRT from Bundaran HI station and ride it to Dukuh Atas for Blok M connections, or north toward Monas. It costs under Rp 15,000 and saves you from Jakarta's legendary gridlock. We've seen first-timers waste entire half-days in traffic just because they booked a cheap room far from the corridor.

Jakarta for business travelers

The SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) is where deals get done. If your meetings are around Jalan Jend. Sudirman or Gatot Subroto, staying anywhere else adds unnecessary commute time. Mercure Gatot Subroto puts you right in the thick of it.

Book mid-week rates when you can. Jakarta's business hotels often drop 15-20% on weekends because the corporate crowd clears out. And skip the hotel restaurant for client dinners. Altitude at Grand Indonesia or Lara Djonggrang on Jalan Cik Ditiro will impress far more.

How to avoid Jakarta's hotel rip-offs

Photos of 'Kota Tua-area' hotels are notoriously deceptive. That charming colonial courtyard shot? It's the lobby of the building next door. Always filter for hotels that show room photos, not just heritage street scenes from Fatahillah Square.

Watch the 'service charge plus tax' line at checkout. Jakarta hotels add 21% on top of quoted rates at most four-star and above properties. A room listed at $160/night becomes $194 before you've ordered room service. The listed prices on our site are pre-tax estimates, so always confirm the final rate at booking.

Where to eat near your Jakarta hotel

If you're in Thamrin, walk 10 minutes east to Jalan Sabang for some of Jakarta's best street food. Nasi goreng stalls start at Rp 25,000 and the sate ayam at the corner cart near the roundabout has been there for 20 years. Grand Indonesia's food court on Level 3 is also genuinely good and air-conditioned.

Staying in Mangga Dua? Head to Mangga Dua Square's food basement for cheap Chinese-Indonesian plates at Rp 30,000-60,000. Glodok, 10 minutes south by Grab, has some of the city's best pork dishes at old-school shophouse restaurants on Jalan Pancoran.

Jakarta in the rainy season: what hotels won't tell you

November through March can mean flooding, and not just light puddle stuff. Jalan Thamrin has flooded badly in recent years, and lower-budget hotels near Mangga Besar and Glodok sit in flood-prone zones. Check whether your hotel is above ground-floor level if you're visiting January or February.

The upside: rates at quality mid-range hotels drop to their lowest point. Artotel Thamrin and Holiday Inn Express on Wahid Hasyim both dip noticeably in January. If you can handle a rain shower and keep an eye on BPBD Jakarta flood alerts on Twitter, wet season is the best time to get value.

Luxury Jakarta: is it worth the splurge?

Short answer: yes, if you pick the right property. The Langham on Jalan Sudirman and Raffles Jakarta in Ciputra World aren't just comfortable. They're in a different category of service from anything below $250/night in this city. Jakarta's traffic means you'll spend real time in your hotel, and spending it somewhere genuinely excellent isn't wasteful.

Pullman Jakarta at Thamrin CBD hits a sweet spot at $200-275/night. You're above Thamrin's chaos, the pool area is excellent, and you're a 5-minute walk from Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia malls. Skip the hotel bar and take the 12-minute walk to Skye Bar on Jalan M.H. Thamrin for sunset drinks instead.

Jakarta's best neighborhoods

Central Jakarta is where you want to be. Thamrin and Sudirman put you inside the business and cultural core, with MRT access and everything walkable after dark. South Jakarta is your luxury fallback, but budget travelers should look at Mangga Dua before settling.

Central Jakarta 3 vetted hotels

The city's core. Best transport, best access, best bang for most budgets.

Thamrin and Wahid Hasyim are where you want your Jakarta base. Monas is a 10-minute walk from most hotels here, Istiqlal Mosque is 15 minutes, and you have MRT at Bundaran HI right on your doorstep. Traffic is still Jakarta traffic, but you can actually escape it on foot here.

Hotels in this region run from $105/night at Holiday Inn Express up to $275/night at Pullman. That spread gives you real choices. Artotel Thamrin sits in the middle and punches above its price with genuinely cool design and a rooftop bar that locals actually use.

Avoid the clutch of budget guesthouses around Jalan Jaksa. That area had its moment as a backpacker strip in the 1990s and hasn't recovered since. Pay the extra $30 and stay somewhere with a working lift.

Best areas Thamrin, Wahid Hasyim
Price range $105-275/night
Best for First-timers, couples, business
Avoid Jalan Jaksa budget guesthouses
Best months June-September
South Jakarta 2 vetted hotels

Luxury territory. The SCBD, Sudirman, and some of Jakarta's best dining.

South Jakarta is where the money lives, and hotels here match that energy. Sudirman and Ciputra World are home to The Langham and Raffles, two of Southeast Asia's best city hotels. If you're here on a corporate card or celebrating something real, this is the region.

The Gatot Subroto corridor runs through the heart of the business district and Mercure handles that segment well. You're a short Grab ride from Pacific Place mall, Senayan City, and the embassies on Jalan Rasuna Said. Dinner options around Kemang, 20 minutes south, are excellent for client evenings.

Prices here reflect the postcode. Budget $160/night minimum for mid-range and $280+ for luxury. But the street food around Blok M. 15 minutes by MRT from Dukuh Atas. is still Rp 25,000 a plate, so you're not paying city prices for every meal.

Best areas Sudirman, SCBD, Gatot Subroto
Price range $160-900/night
Best for Luxury travelers, business executives
Avoid Overpriced boutique spots near Kemang with no MRT access
Best months June-September
North Jakarta 1 vetted hotel

Budget-friendly base near Kota Tua, but know what you're getting into.

Mangga Dua is the one North Jakarta neighborhood that works for tourists. You're 15 minutes walk from Fatahillah Square in Kota Tua and close to the Mangga Dua electronics and wholesale markets that cover several city blocks. Amaris Hotel here offers solid value at $55-85/night.

Be realistic about the trade-offs. North Jakarta's roads are older and flood more easily than Thamrin. The air near the port smells industrial. And getting to South Jakarta or SCBD by road takes 45-60 minutes in any remotely normal traffic window.

That said, if Kota Tua is your priority and you want to spend more time there than anywhere else in the city, Mangga Dua makes sense. The Transjakarta bus runs from Mangga Dua down to Harmoni in under 20 minutes and connects you to the wider network.

Best areas Mangga Dua, Kota Tua adjacent
Price range $55-85/night
Best for Budget travelers, history enthusiasts
Avoid Penjaringan, Muara Baru waterfront
Best months June-October
West Jakarta 3 vetted hotels

Gritty, affordable, and underrated if you know where to look.

West Jakarta covers a lot of ground. Glodok is Jakarta's Chinatown and one of the city's most interesting neighborhoods for food, temples, and old shophouse architecture. Hotel Santika Premiere on Hayam Wuruk puts you right on the edge of it at $130-185/night. Mangga Besar is messier but Swiss-Belhotel there offers good positioning for the price.

Daan Mogot is the outlier. It's further west toward the Jakarta-Tangerang boundary and primarily useful if you have business in that corridor or truly need the cheapest option in the city. Ibis Budget here at $45-70/night is clean and functional but it's a 40-minute Transjakarta ride to Monas.

West Jakarta hotels are generally 20-30% cheaper than equivalent properties in Thamrin. If you're comfortable navigating Transjakarta lines and don't need everything on your doorstep, the savings are real. The local food scene around Glodok at night is worth the extra effort of being based here.

Best areas Glodok, Mangga Besar
Price range $45-190/night
Best for Budget travelers, foodies, Chinatown explorers
Avoid Remote Daan Mogot unless you have a reason
Best months June-September

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Jakarta.

Romantic

The Langham on Jalan Sudirman is the call, full stop. Pool villas, afternoon tea, and a level of quiet that Jakarta's streets simply don't offer anywhere else.

Culture

Base yourself in Mangga Dua and walk to Kota Tua's Fatahillah Square, Museum Nasional, and the old Dutch canal in under 20 minutes. North Jakarta is where the city's real history lives.

Family

Thamrin works best for families: Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia are next door for rainy day retreats, and Monas grounds are a 10-minute walk for open space.

Budget

Mangga Dua in North Jakarta delivers the best budget-to-location ratio, with Amaris Hotel at $55-85/night and Kota Tua a short walk away.

Beach

Ancol in North Jakarta is the closest beach option to the city center, about 20 minutes from Mangga Dua by Transjakarta, though serious beach trips mean a ferry to the Thousand Islands.

Foodie

Glodok in West Jakarta is your neighborhood. Pork noodles, Chinese temple food, and late-night street carts on Jalan Pancoran run until 2am and nothing costs more than Rp 60,000.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Jakarta

When to visit Jakarta and what to pay.

Budget Friendly

Wet Season (December-February)

Avg hotel: $80-200/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-30°C

The cheapest time to visit by a clear margin. Rooms at Pullman Thamrin can drop toward $160/night and budget spots in Mangga Dua hit $40-55/night. The catch is real: January flooding around Jalan Thamrin and Glodok happens most years, and you should monitor BPBD Jakarta flood alerts daily.

Warming Up

Transition (March-May)

Avg hotel: $95-230/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 26-33°C

Rain is still around but less intense, and prices are recovering toward peak levels. Ramadan falls in this window some years, which changes the city's rhythm entirely. Restaurant hours shift, street food appears later in the evening, and some hotel services adjust their schedules too.

Booking Tips for Jakarta

Insider tips for booking hotels in Jakarta.

Book Thamrin hotels for midweek arrivals

Business hotels on the Thamrin-Sudirman corridor drop 15-20% on weekends because the corporate crowd leaves. If your Jakarta trip spans a weekend, arrive Thursday and you'll often pay peak rates for only 1 night instead of 3.

Always confirm the tax-inclusive rate

Jakarta's four-star and above hotels charge 21% service charge and tax on top of listed rates. A $160/night room at Mercure Gatot Subroto becomes $194 at checkout. Ask for the 'nett rate inclusive of tax and service' when booking directly and get it in writing.

Use the Damri bus from Soekarno-Hatta, not taxis

The Damri airport bus to Gambir Station costs around Rp 45,000 versus Rp 150,000-300,000 for an unmetered taxi. From Gambir you're 10 minutes from Monas and close to Thamrin hotels. Don't take it during 7-9am or 5-7pm or you'll spend 90 minutes on the toll road.

Download Grab before you land

Grab is the only reliable on-demand transport option for getting between Jakarta neighborhoods. Blue Bird taxis are the trustworthy metered alternative if you prefer it, but make sure the meter is running before you move. Never take an unmetered cab from Soekarno-Hatta Terminal 1 or 2.

Check flood-zone status before wet-season bookings

Hotels near Mangga Besar, Glodok, and along the Ciliwung river basin are in proven flood zones. If you're visiting November through February, cross-reference your hotel address against BPBD Jakarta's flood map at bpbd.jakarta.go.id. This is not an exaggeration. ground-floor rooms in these zones have flooded mid-stay.

Ramadan changes the hotel experience

If your trip falls during Ramadan (dates shift each year, check in advance), most hotel restaurants reduce hours and some rooftop bars limit alcohol service. This isn't a reason to avoid Jakarta, but know that street food appears later. after Maghrib around 6pm. and the city has a different, genuinely interesting energy worth experiencing.

Hotels in Jakarta — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Jakarta.

What's the best area to stay in Jakarta?

Thamrin and Sudirman in Central and South Jakarta are your best bets. You're within 10 minutes walk of the MRT, Grand Indonesia Mall, and Monas. Hotels here run $120-275/night but you'll save on taxis all week.

Is Jakarta safe for tourists?

Generally yes, but stay alert in Kota Tua at night and around Tanah Abang Market during peak hours. Stick to Sudirman, Thamrin, and SCBD after dark and you'll be fine. Petty theft is the main risk, not violent crime.

How much do hotels in Jakarta cost?

You can find solid budget rooms in Mangga Dua or Daan Mogot for $45-70/night. Mid-range in Thamrin runs $105-185/night. Luxury properties on Sudirman and in Ciputra World start at $280 and go well past $900/night at Raffles.

When is the best time to visit Jakarta?

June through September is the dry season and the clear winner. Temperatures sit around 27-32°C and you're not fighting floods on Jalan Sudirman. Hotels are busier but the weather is worth paying a little more for.

How do I get around Jakarta?

The MRT runs from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta up to Bundaran HI at Thamrin, and it's cheap at around Rp 14,000 per trip. Grab (the local Uber equivalent) covers everywhere the MRT doesn't. Avoid taxis without meters near Soekarno-Hatta airport. they'll quote you Rp 300,000+ for a Rp 150,000 ride.

How far is Soekarno-Hatta airport from Central Jakarta hotels?

About 30-45 minutes by Damri airport bus to Gambir Station, or 45-70 minutes by Grab depending on traffic. The Damri bus costs around Rp 45,000 and drops you near Monas and Thamrin. Don't take it during rush hour or you'll be sitting on the toll road for 90 minutes.

Which Jakarta neighborhood should I avoid for hotels?

Skip Penjaringan and the waterfront areas near Muara Baru. The hotels are cheaper but you're far from everything useful, the streets flood regularly during wet season, and the air quality near the port is rough. Kota Tua is fine for a day trip but a poor base.

Are there budget hotels worth staying at in Jakarta?

Yes. Amaris Hotel in Mangga Dua at $55-85/night is genuinely decent for the price and puts you 15 minutes walk from Kota Tua. Ibis Budget on Daan Mogot is the cheapest vetted pick at $45-70/night but you'll pay in commute time to the center.

Do Jakarta hotels include breakfast?

Not automatically. Mid-range hotels like Holiday Inn Express on Jalan Wahid Hasyim often bundle it in, but check before assuming. At luxury properties like Pullman Thamrin or The Langham, breakfast can add $25-40/person on top of the room rate.

What's the dress code or cultural etiquette for Jakarta hotels?

Jakarta is a Muslim-majority city, so dress modestly when you're outside the hotel. Inside international hotels like Raffles or Pullman, Western norms apply. If you're visiting Istiqlal Mosque (5 minutes from Monas), cover your shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf.

Is there a Jakarta hotel deal season?

January and February are the quietest months and hotels drop noticeably. Budget rooms in Mangga Dua can fall to $40-55/night. The trade-off is heavy rain and occasional street flooding near older neighborhoods like Glodok and Mangga Besar.

Which Jakarta hotel is best for business travel?

Mercure Jakarta Gatot Subroto is the sharp pick for the SCBD business corridor, priced at $160-220/night with solid meeting facilities. Hotel Santika Premiere on Hayam Wuruk works better if your meetings are near Glodok or Kota Tua, and it's $30-40/night cheaper.
