Altamont Court Hotel

New Kingston, Kingston $55–85/night 7.2/10

This small hotel sits on Altamont Crescent in the heart of New Kingston, within walking distance of Emancipation Park. Rooms are basic but clean, with air conditioning that actually works well in the Caribbean heat. The staff are friendly and genuinely helpful with directions around the city. Good option if you just need a bed and easy access to the business district without spending much.

#2

The Courtleigh Manor Hotel

New Kingston, Kingston $75–110/night 7.6/10

Located on St. Lucia Avenue in New Kingston, this hotel offers solid value for the price point. Rooms are dated in decor but well maintained, and the pool area is a genuine relief after a hot day in the city. The on-site restaurant serves decent Jamaican food without tourist markup. It attracts a mix of business travelers and budget tourists, which gives it a more local feel than the big chains nearby.

#3

Knutsford Court Hotel

New Kingston, Kingston $110–165/night 8.1/10

Knutsford Court sits on Chelsea Avenue and is one of the most consistently booked hotels in New Kingston for good reason. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, with reliable Wi-Fi that actually supports video calls. The pool and garden area in the courtyard give it a quieter atmosphere than the street noise suggests. The location puts you a short walk from Oxford Road restaurants and the business corridor.

#4

The Spanish Court Hotel

New Kingston, Kingston $140–210/night 8.8/10

The Spanish Court on St. Lucia Avenue is the best all-around hotel in New Kingston for most travelers. Rooms are modern, stylish, and genuinely quiet despite the central location. The rooftop pool has good views over the city and is well maintained. The restaurant downstairs is one of Kingston's better dining spots on its own merits, not just by hotel standards.

Courtyard by Marriott Kingston hotel interior
#5

Courtyard by Marriott Kingston

New Kingston, Kingston $150–220/night 8.3/10

This Marriott property on Trafalgar Road delivers consistent international chain standards in a city where that is not always guaranteed. Rooms are exactly what you expect from Courtyard, clean and functional with good desk setups for working. The location near the financial district makes it popular with corporate travelers flying in and out of Norman Manley Airport. Breakfast is adequate but not worth the add-on price when cheaper options are a block away.

Hotel Four Seasons Kingston hotel interior
#6

Hotel Four Seasons Kingston

Liguanea, Kingston $130–185/night 7.9/10

Not related to the international Four Seasons brand, this independently owned hotel sits on Ruthven Road in the Liguanea area east of New Kingston. The property has a quiet, residential feel with a garden and pool that make it feel more like a guesthouse than a hotel. Rooms are spacious by Kingston standards and kept in good condition. It is a solid pick for anyone wanting to stay near the University of the West Indies or the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road.

Legends Beach Resort hotel interior
#7

Legends Beach Resort

Kingston Waterfront, Kingston $160–230/night 8/10

This hotel sits along the Kingston waterfront area with direct access to the harbor views that most Kingston hotels miss entirely. The rooms facing the water are worth the small upgrade cost for the morning light alone. Food at the on-site restaurant leans heavily Jamaican with a few international options mixed in. It is farther from New Kingston than some travelers expect, so plan on using taxis to reach the main commercial areas.

Indies Hotel hotel interior
#8

Indies Hotel

New Kingston, Kingston $120–175/night 8.2/10

The Indies Hotel on Holborn Road is one of the more charming properties in New Kingston, with a distinctly local character that the chain hotels lack. The courtyard garden area is shaded and genuinely relaxing, and the small pool is kept clean. Rooms have a warm, personal feel with Jamaican artwork on the walls rather than generic hotel prints. The bar in the evenings draws a local crowd, which makes it a good spot to actually meet Kingston residents.

Strawberry Hill hotel interior
#9

Strawberry Hill

Blue Mountains, Irish Town $280–420/night 9.1/10

Strawberry Hill sits at 3,100 feet in the Blue Mountains above Kingston, about 45 minutes from the city center by car. The infinity pool overlooking the mountains and the distant city below is genuinely one of the most impressive hotel settings in the Caribbean. Rooms are individual Georgian-style cottages with fireplaces, which feels surreal given that you are still technically in Jamaica. The spa and restaurant are both excellent, and the property has strong ties to Chris Blackwell and the Island Records history that runs through Jamaican music culture.

Geejam Hotel hotel interior
#10

Geejam Hotel

San San, Port Antonio $350–550/night 9.4/10

Geejam is a small luxury property in San San near Port Antonio, roughly two hours east of Kingston along the coast road. It started as a recording studio compound and still operates one of the best private studios in the Caribbean on site. The bungalows are set into the hillside above the sea and offer serious privacy with high-end design throughout. The beach club at the bottom of the property and the exceptional food make it worth the price for anyone wanting something completely different from a standard hotel stay.

Where to Stay in Kingston

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

New Kingston: where to actually stay

New Kingston is the commercial and social hub of the city, centered on Knutsford Boulevard and stretching up toward Half Way Tree. It's where the best hotels are, the best restaurants, and the easiest access to Devon House on Hope Road. which is 10 minutes on foot.

The 4-block stretch between Trafalgar Road and Knutsford Boulevard has everything you need within walking distance. Stay here and skip the taxi hassle entirely. That said, book a hotel with secure parking if you're renting a car. street parking in New Kingston is genuinely chaotic.

Blue Mountains: the escape most visitors miss

Most tourists spend their whole Kingston trip at sea level and go home without ever driving up into the Blue Mountains. That's a mistake. The 45-minute drive up Gordon Town Road above Irish Town changes everything. cooler temperatures, coffee farms, and views that make New Kingston feel very far away.

Strawberry Hill is the obvious base up here, and it's genuinely world-class. But even if you're not staying there, budget a full day for the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountain Peak trail starts at about 2,256 meters and most hikers begin at 2am to catch the sunrise. Book a local guide through your hotel. solo hiking on unfamiliar mountain trails at night isn't smart.

Getting around Kingston without losing your mind

JUTC buses are cheap and reliable for daytime travel along major corridors like Constant Spring Road and Washington Boulevard. For $1 USD you can get from Half Way Tree to Papine, which puts you close to the UWI campus and the eastern end of Hope Road. Taxis are metered but many drivers will negotiate a flat rate. always agree on the price before you get in.

The Kingston Waterfront and Port Royal are a solid 20-25 minutes from New Kingston by taxi, costing around $12-18 USD. Don't attempt those routes by bus unless you know the city well. If you're heading to Port Antonio to visit Geejam, that's a 2.5-hour drive along the A4 coastal road. rent a car or hire a driver for $80-120 USD return.

Food in Kingston: skip the hotel restaurant

Devon House on Hope Road is a mandatory stop, and not just for the mansion tour. The Devon House I-Scream is legitimately some of the best ice cream in the Caribbean. the rum and raisin flavor specifically. It's 10 minutes walk from most New Kingston hotels and open until 11pm most nights.

For proper Jamaican food, head to Redbones Blues Café on Argyle Road in Liguanea, or grab patties from Tastee on Half Way Tree Road. Most hotel breakfast spreads in Kingston are generic buffets that cost $15-20 USD. Skip them, walk 5 minutes, and eat better for $5.

Downtown Kingston: visit, don't stay

Downtown has the National Gallery of Jamaica on Ocean Boulevard. genuinely excellent and chronically undervisited. The Craft Market near the waterfront is worth an hour, though expect persistent sales pitches. Kingston Parish Church on King Street is one of the oldest buildings in the Western Hemisphere and most visitors walk right past it.

We don't recommend basing yourself Downtown. The hotel options there are poor value compared to New Kingston, and the area quiets down sharply after 6pm. Visit for the culture, come back to New Kingston to sleep.

What Kingston gets right that Montego Bay doesn't

Montego Bay is where most tourists land. Kingston is where Jamaicans actually live. That difference shows up in the food, the music, the conversation. and the hotel value. You get more room for your money in New Kingston than in any comparable neighborhood in Mo Bay, and the culture is thicker.

The Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road is in Kingston, not Montego Bay. Tuff Gong Recording Studios is in Kingston. The National Dance Theatre Company performs in Kingston. If you came to Jamaica for more than a resort pool, this is the city you should be in. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

Kingston's best neighborhoods

New Kingston is where you want to base yourself. It's safe, walkable, close to restaurants on Knutsford Boulevard, and has the best range of hotels. Everywhere else is secondary unless you have a specific reason.

New Kingston 6 vetted hotels

Kingston's business and social core. the best base for most visitors.

New Kingston sits between Trafalgar Road to the south and Half Way Tree to the north, with Knutsford Boulevard as its main artery. This is where the bulk of our picks are concentrated, and for good reason. It's walkable, relatively safe, and has the best mix of restaurants, cafés, and nightlife in the city.

Hotels here range from $55/night at Altamont Court on Altamont Crescent up to $220/night at the Courtyard by Marriott on Caledonia Avenue. That spread means nearly any budget works in this neighborhood. The Spanish Court Hotel on St. Lucia Avenue is the standout for anyone who wants quality without flying to the Blue Mountains.

One thing worth knowing: weekend nights around Knutsford Boulevard get loud. If you're a light sleeper, book a room on the higher floors and ask for the side facing away from the street. Most hotels here will accommodate that request without charging extra.

Best areas Knutsford Boulevard, Trafalgar Road
Price range $55-220/night
Best for Business travelers, first-time visitors, solo travelers
Avoid Ground-floor rooms on Knutsford Blvd (street noise)
Best months December-April
Liguanea 1 vetted hotel

Quieter, more residential. good if you want space from the business district buzz.

Liguanea sits just east of New Kingston along Hope Road, running toward Papine and the foothills of the Blue Mountains. It's a residential area with a calmer feel, popular with the Kingston middle class and university crowd near UWI. Hotel Four Seasons Kingston is the main option here, and it sits comfortably in the $130-185/night bracket.

The appeal of Liguanea is that you're 15 minutes walk from Hope Botanical Gardens, one of the largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean. You're also closer to the university campus, which means better local-restaurant options at lower prices. Redbones Blues Café on Argyle Road is a 5-minute walk and it's one of the best food and music venues in the city.

The trade-off is that you're about a 10-minute taxi ride from New Kingston's main hotel strip. Not a big deal, but worth knowing if you have back-to-back meetings on Knutsford Boulevard or Trafalgar Road. Taxis between Liguanea and New Kingston run $6-10 USD.

Best areas Hope Road, Argyle Road
Price range $130-185/night
Best for Repeat visitors, longer stays, culture seekers
Avoid Long walks at night. always take a taxi after dark
Best months November-March
Kingston Waterfront 1 vetted hotel

Port-side location with city views. for travelers who want something different.

The Kingston Waterfront runs along Ocean Boulevard near the cruise ship terminal and Port Royal ferry dock. It's not a traditional tourist neighborhood, but Legends Beach Resort makes the most of its position. You're looking at the harbor with the Blue Mountains behind it. that view is genuinely hard to beat at any price.

The National Gallery of Jamaica on Ocean Boulevard is a 5-minute walk, and the Craft Market is right there too. During the day it's lively and interesting. After 7pm the area quiets down quickly and restaurant options within walking distance are limited. Plan your evenings around a taxi to New Kingston or Liguanea.

Rooms at Legends run $160-230/night, which puts it in mid-range territory for what is essentially a unique location play. If you're here for the views and the harbor atmosphere rather than walkability to restaurants and nightlife, it works well. Business travelers and conference groups tend to use it less; leisure travelers and couples tend to like it more.

Best areas Ocean Boulevard, Port Royal Street
Price range $160-230/night
Best for Couples, leisure travelers, harbor views
Avoid Walking alone after dark near the port
Best months December-March
Blue Mountains / Irish Town 1 vetted hotel

Cool, misty, and completely different from the city below.

Irish Town sits about 45 minutes above New Kingston along the Gordon Town Road, at an elevation where temperatures drop to 18-22°C even in summer. Strawberry Hill is the only hotel up here worth talking about, and it genuinely earns its $280-420/night price tag. The individual cottages, the mountain air, the farm-to-table kitchen. it's a different category of experience.

This isn't a base for exploring Kingston's business district. It's a destination in itself. Blue Mountain coffee farms are nearby, the peak trail is accessible with a guide, and the bird life around Irish Town is remarkable if that's your thing. A sunrise hike to the 2,256-meter peak takes about 4-5 hours round trip from the Penlyne Castle trailhead.

Getting up and down the mountain requires a car or pre-booked driver. There are no buses from New Kingston to Irish Town that tourists would realistically use. Budget $30-40 USD each way for a driver, or rent a car and take it slow on that winding road. Don't try to rush the Gordon Town Road. local drivers who grew up on it still take it carefully.

Best areas Irish Town, Gordon Town Road
Price range $280-420/night
Best for Luxury travelers, honeymooners, nature lovers
Avoid Driving the mountain road at night without local knowledge
Best months November-April
Port Antonio / San San 1 vetted hotel

Two and a half hours from Kingston. but Geejam justifies the drive.

Port Antonio is technically outside Kingston, but Geejam Hotel in the San San area is on our list and it earns its place. The drive along the A4 coastal road from Kingston takes 2.5 hours and it's one of the most scenic roads in Jamaica. San San Beach is steps from Geejam and Blue Lagoon is 10 minutes by car.

Geejam at $350-550/night is our highest-rated hotel on the entire list, sitting at 9.4. It has its own recording studio, which has hosted artists from across the music world. The vibe is intimate, creative, and completely different from anything in Kingston proper. Maximum occupancy is small by design. book well in advance.

This works best as a 2-3 night add-on to a Kingston trip rather than a standalone base. Port Antonio has limited dining options outside the hotel, though Dickie's Best Kept Secret on the road toward Fairy Hill is worth the trip for the lobster. Budget separately for the drive or consider a charter flight from Kingston's Norman Manley Airport.

Best areas San San, Fairy Hill
Price range $350-550/night
Best for Luxury travelers, music lovers, couples
Avoid Expecting urban amenities. this is remote by design
Best months December-April

Romantic Stay

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Kingston

When to visit Kingston and what to pay.

Budget Friendly

Hot Season (Jul-Aug)

Avg hotel: $65-160/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 30-33°C

Jamaican Independence Day on August 6th brings a local crowd to Kingston and hotel prices tick up briefly around that week. Outside of that, July and August are the cheapest months to book. Heat sits at 30-33°C with high humidity. budget hotels without strong air conditioning become genuinely uncomfortable, so spend the extra $20/night on a room that's properly cooled.

Budget Friendly

Hurricane Season (Sep-Nov)

Avg hotel: $55-140/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 28-31°C

September and October are the riskiest months for weather and prices bottom out accordingly. Kingston doesn't get direct hurricane hits as often as the north coast, but tropical storms are a real possibility. Late November is actually a smart window. hurricane risk drops sharply, temperatures cool to 26-28°C, and hotels haven't yet switched to peak pricing.

Booking Tips for Kingston

Insider tips for booking hotels in Kingston.

Book New Kingston hotels directly for better rates

Several New Kingston properties including Knutsford Court on Chelsea Avenue and The Spanish Court on St. Lucia Avenue offer 10-15% discounts for direct bookings versus third-party platforms. Call or email the hotel directly before you confirm anywhere else. It takes 5 minutes and saves real money on a $140-210/night room.

Don't book Downtown Kingston thinking you'll save money

Guesthouses near Orange Street and Parade Square advertise rates around $40-55/night, which sounds appealing. But the trade-off in comfort, security, and sleep quality isn't worth it. Altamont Court in New Kingston starts at $55/night. basically the same money for a dramatically better experience.

Jamaica Carnival week drives prices up fast

Jamaica Carnival runs over the last week of April into early May, centered in New Kingston and along Knutsford Boulevard. Hotel rates in the area jump 25-40% during Carnival week and many properties enforce 3-night minimum stays. Book 8-10 weeks ahead if your dates overlap. or avoid that week entirely if budget matters.

Strawberry Hill needs advance planning

Strawberry Hill in Irish Town has limited rooms by design, and the most popular cottages book out 6-8 weeks ahead during peak season. If you want the Mountain Studio cottage or anything with a private plunge pool, email directly rather than booking online. they hold some inventory for direct guests. The $280-420/night rate is per room, not per person.

Ask your hotel about transport before you arrive

Most New Kingston hotels can arrange airport transfers from Norman Manley International Airport for $25-35 USD, which beats the unofficial taxi drivers outside arrivals who charge $45-60 for the same 30-minute ride along the Palisadoes strip. Pre-arrange it at booking. Don't wait until you land.

Geejam requires a separate trip, not a day visit

Port Antonio is 2.5 hours from Kingston along the A4 coastal road and Geejam Hotel in San San doesn't do day passes. If you're going, commit to at least 2 nights. you'll need one full day just to decompress from the drive and settle into the pace of the place. The $350-550/night rate stings less when you're not rushing.

Hotels in Kingston — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Kingston.

What's the best area to stay in Kingston?

New Kingston is the answer for most visitors. It's on and around Knutsford Boulevard and Half Way Tree Road, walkable to Emancipation Park, and has the highest concentration of decent restaurants and bars. Hotels here run $55-220/night depending on your budget. Downtown Kingston and Parade are fine during the day but we wouldn't recommend basing yourself there.

How much does a hotel in Kingston cost per night?

Budget rooms in New Kingston start around $55-85/night at places like Altamont Court. Mid-range gets you $110-175/night at Knutsford Court or Indies Hotel on Lady Musgrave Road. Push to $280-420/night and you're looking at Strawberry Hill up in Irish Town in the Blue Mountains. worth every dollar if you can swing it.

Is Kingston safe for tourists?

New Kingston and Liguanea are genuinely fine for tourists. Stick to the strip between Knutsford Boulevard and Hope Road and you'll have no issues. Downtown near Orange Street and Spanish Town Road is a different story after dark. don't wander there without a local guide. Most hotel concierges will be straight with you about where not to go.

What's the best time of year to visit Kingston?

December through April is peak season. The weather is driest and temperatures sit around 25-28°C, which is about as good as it gets. Hotel prices spike 20-30% during this window, especially around Christmas and Carnival in April. If you want good weather without the price surge, late November is your sweet spot.

How far is Kingston from the Blue Mountains?

Irish Town, where Strawberry Hill sits, is about 45 minutes from New Kingston by car up the Gordon Town Road. It's a winding mountain drive so don't underestimate the time. Taxis from New Kingston charge roughly $30-40 USD for the trip. The views from up there make the journey completely worth it.

Do I need a car to get around Kingston?

You don't need one if you're staying in New Kingston. The JUTC bus runs frequently along Half Way Tree Road and Constant Spring Road for about $1 USD per ride. But for evening trips or anything beyond New Kingston, taxis are more practical. Expect to pay $8-15 USD for most New Kingston to Liguanea trips.

Which Kingston hotels are best for business travelers?

What's the best budget hotel in Kingston?

Altamont Court on Altamont Crescent in New Kingston is the best budget option we've reviewed, starting at $55/night. It's a 10-minute walk from Emancipation Park and the rooms are clean and honest. Don't expect luxury, but it punches well above its price bracket for a city-center option.

It's 45 minutes from New Kingston up above Irish Town. If you're staying 2 nights, do one in New Kingston and one at Strawberry Hill. that's the ideal Kingston itinerary.

When should I avoid visiting Kingston?

September and October are peak hurricane months and hotel prices drop to their lowest for a reason. Temperatures hit 31-33°C with high humidity and afternoon downpours are common. June and July bring similar heat. If you're set on coming in this window, book a hotel with strong air conditioning and a pool. non-negotiable.

What's the nightlife like around the hotels in New Kingston?

Knutsford Boulevard is the main strip, with bars and restaurants within a 5-minute walk of most New Kingston hotels. Quad and Fiction are the main clubs and they're both off New Kingston's main drag. The scene starts late. nothing really kicks off before midnight. Ask your hotel front desk for current venue recommendations since Kingston's nightlife scene moves fast.
