Where to Stay in Dead Sea

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Sweimeh vs Amman: Where to actually stay

If floating in the Dead Sea is your reason for coming, stay in Sweimeh. Full stop. The resort strip along Dead Sea Shore Road has everything within walking distance, and you won't spend an hour in a taxi every morning. Amman is a great city, but it's not the Dead Sea.

The two Amman hotels in our list serve specific purposes. Ashtar Hotel in Downtown near the Roman Citadel works for city explorers on a budget. Grand Hyatt Amman on Zahran Street in Shmeisani is purely for business travelers who need Queen Alia International Airport access and a solid meeting room. Pick Sweimeh unless your itinerary demands otherwise.

The Dead Sea resort strip explained

The Sweimeh resort cluster stretches roughly 8 km along Dead Sea Shore Road, Dead Sea Highway, and Dead Sea Road North. Most of the big names. Kempinski, Hilton, Mövenpick, Marriott, Crowne Plaza. sit within 3 km of each other. You can walk between some, but the road has no real pedestrian infrastructure, so most guests use hotel shuttles.

Don't book the absolute cheapest room at a luxury resort hoping to access the facilities. A standard room at Kempinski gives you full beach access, but a heavily discounted rate might come with pool restrictions. Read the fine print. And if you're not staying at the Mövenpick, their beach-access day passes are worth knowing about for $35-55 per person.

Getting to the Dead Sea without a car

There's no train. The JETT bus from Amman's 7th Circle runs once daily to the Dead Sea area for about JD 3-4, but it deposits you near the public beach at Amman Beach, not the resort strip. A private taxi from Downtown Amman to Sweimeh runs JD 25-35 and takes 60-75 minutes. Uber and Careem operate in Jordan and are often cheaper. check both before hailing a cab.

If you're visiting Petra or Aqaba as part of a loop, rent a car in Amman. The Dead Sea Highway (Route 65) is well-maintained and straightforward. Driving yourself from Amman to Sweimeh is genuinely easy. just give yourself extra time during Eid holidays when the road is packed solid.

Dead Sea health & safety: what hotels won't tell you

The salt concentration is around 34%, which is roughly 10 times saltier than regular ocean water. Any cut, shaving nick, or skin crack will burn intensely. Hotels hand out mineral mud at the spa. but applying it yourself on the beach and rinsing off is free and works just as well. Don't shave for 24 hours before going in.

You cannot drown in the traditional sense, but you can flip onto your face. Stay on your back, keep your eyes and mouth out of the water. If you get salt in your eyes, hotel beach stations have fresh water rinse points. Every major resort from Mövenpick to Ramada has one. use them immediately, don't rub.

When Dead Sea hotel prices spike (and when they drop)

Ramadan changes the rhythm here. During Ramadan (dates shift each year), resorts operate differently: spa hours adjust, restaurant service changes after iftar, and the social atmosphere around the pools in the evening becomes lively and communal. Some travelers love it. Non-Muslim guests are welcome everywhere, but plan around revised schedules.

The most expensive weeks on the Dead Sea resort strip are: Eid al-Fitr (3 days after Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (3 days), Jordan National Day in May, and the stretch between Christmas and New Year. During those windows, Kempinski and Hilton can hit $400+/night. Book 2-3 months ahead or accept mid-week dates for reasonable rates.

Day trips worth planning before you arrive

Bethany Beyond the Jordan, about 10 km north of the main Sweimeh resort cluster on Dead Sea Road North, is where John the Baptist is believed to have baptized Jesus. Entrance is JD 12 and guided tours run regularly. It pairs well with a morning and can be done before the midday heat sets in. Mount Nebo is 30 km away and the views toward the Dead Sea and Jerusalem on a clear day are genuinely remarkable.

Wadi Mujib is the headline adventure. The canyon opens right onto Dead Sea Road, about 40 km south of the resort strip, and the Siq Trail hike involves wading through waist-deep water in a slot canyon. Entry is JD 21 and includes a life jacket. Book the timeslot online before you leave your hotel. morning slots sell out by 9am during peak season.

Dead Sea's best neighborhoods

Most of the action sits along Sweimeh on the northeastern shore. that's where you want to be for direct beach access. If you need Amman for business or flights, it works, but don't expect to float in the sea from your room.

Sweimeh Resort Strip 7 vetted hotels

The main event. Direct beach access, spa resorts, and the full Dead Sea experience.

This is where you want to be. The resort strip along Dead Sea Shore Road, Dead Sea Highway, and Dead Sea Road North concentrates all the major names within a few kilometers of the shoreline. Kempinski, Hilton, Mövenpick, Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Ramada, Holiday Inn, and Dead Sea Spa Hotel are all here. Seven of our 10 vetted picks sit in this zone.

Prices here range from $55/night at Dead Sea Spa Hotel up to $420/night at Kempinski Ishtar. so there's genuinely something for every budget. The mid-range sweet spot is Ramada Resort ($120-190/night) and Holiday Inn ($110-175/night), both with solid beach access and family-oriented facilities. Don't expect much nightlife or independent restaurants outside the resorts. You're eating where you're sleeping.

One thing many first-timers miss: the resorts are spread out and not walkable between each other in summer heat. If you want to visit friends staying at another hotel, factor in a 10-minute drive. The Dead Sea Highway itself moves fast. don't try crossing it on foot.

Best areas Dead Sea Shore, Dead Sea Highway, Dead Sea Road North
Price range $55-420/night
Best for Beach access, spa stays, families, couples
Avoid Booking anything labeled 'sea view' without confirming floor level. ground-floor rooms can face hotel gardens, not the water
Best months March-May, October-November
Downtown Amman 1 vetted hotel

Budget base for city explorers combining Amman sightseeing with a Dead Sea day trip.

Downtown Amman, around the Roman Citadel on Jabal al-Qal'a and the King Hussein Mosque nearby, is where Ashtar Hotel sits. At $70-95/night with a 7.6 rating, it's our Best Value pick and it earns that badge if Amman itself is on your itinerary. The Dead Sea is 65 km away, so it's a day trip, not a walk to the beach.

Downtown works if you want to split time between Amman's old city, Rainbow Street restaurants, and the Dead Sea. Taxis from this neighborhood to the resort strip run about JD 25-30. The tradeoff is you're not waking up to a sea view or stepping onto mineral mud in the morning.

If your budget is under $100/night and you want both Amman and the Dead Sea in one trip, Downtown is practical and walkable. The area has good street food, local coffee shops, and the souqs of Al-Balad market within 10 minutes on foot.

Best areas Downtown, Al-Balad, near Roman Citadel
Price range $70-95/night
Best for Budget travelers, city explorers, those combining Amman and Dead Sea
Avoid Booking here if the Dead Sea is your only goal. the daily taxi costs add up fast
Best months March-May, September-November
Shmeisani & West Amman 1 vetted hotel

Business-grade Amman with airport connections and upscale dining on Zahran Street.

Shmeisani is the financial and business district of Amman, centered around Zahran Street and the Abdul Hamid Shoman neighborhood. Grand Hyatt Amman sits right on Zahran Street at $180-249/night with an 8.7 rating and our Best Location badge. It's legitimate. if Amman's banking district, the Hussein Sports City area, or the Abdul Hamid Shoman Cultural House are on your agenda, this is the address.

Queen Alia International Airport is 35-40 minutes by car on Airport Road, which puts Grand Hyatt in a genuinely convenient position for business travel. The hotel itself has strong meeting facilities and the rooftop restaurant is one of the better upscale dining options in this part of Amman. Don't come here for the Dead Sea. add that as a separate day with a rental car.

West Amman in general runs pricier than Downtown. Restaurants on Zahran Street and the nearby Abdoun area cost noticeably more than the old city. But you're getting security, consistent service, and proximity to the kind of modern Amman that's actually growing fast.

Best areas Shmeisani, Zahran Street, Abdoun
Price range $180-249/night
Best for Business travelers, long layovers, upscale city stays
Avoid If you're here primarily for the Dead Sea. the extra taxi costs and transit time don't make sense
Best months Year-round for business, March-May for leisure
Dead Sea Road North & South Ends 1 vetted hotel

Quieter ends of the resort zone with less traffic and easier access to Bethany and Wadi Mujib.

The northern stretch of Dead Sea Road North, where Crowne Plaza Jordan Dead Sea sits, is slightly removed from the densest resort cluster. That's actually a good thing. Crowne Plaza at $150-230/night scores 8.5 and earns the Business Pick badge. it has proper conference facilities and a less chaotic poolside atmosphere than the mid-range holiday resorts nearby.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan archaeological site is roughly 15 minutes north of this zone. For history-focused travelers, that proximity matters. You can visit early morning before other guests have finished breakfast. The South Dead Sea Road end is quieter still. fewer facilities but dramatically lower prices at the public beaches near Amman Beach resort.

If you're the kind of traveler who wants calm mornings on the shore without a pool DJ, the northern and southern ends of the resort zone deliver that. You'll pay slightly less per night and deal with noticeably fewer weekend crowds from Amman.

Best areas Dead Sea Road North, South Dead Sea Road
Price range $150-230/night
Best for Business travelers, quieter stays, history-focused visitors
Avoid Expecting much outside the hotel. dining and entertainment options thin out north and south of the main strip
Best months October-April

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Dead Sea

When to visit Dead Sea and what to pay.

Peak

Summer (June-August)

Avg hotel: $145-420/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 36-42°C

Brutal heat. We're talking 40°C+ by 11am on Dead Sea Shore Road, and the salt water doesn't cool you down the way a normal sea does. Kempinski and Hilton fill up with Gulf tourists who handle the heat better and book months in advance. If summer is your only option, float before 8:30am, retreat to air-conditioned rooms by midday, and use the resort pools after 5pm. Prices peak at $280-420/night for luxury and $120-175/night for mid-range.

Budget Friendly

Winter (December-February)

Avg hotel: $55-150/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 15-20°C

Cheapest rates on the Dead Sea strip. Dead Sea Spa Hotel drops to $55/night and even Crowne Plaza can hit $150/night. The mineral pools are heated so spa stays still make sense, but outdoor beach time is limited and some resort amenities scale back. Eid holidays in this window (dates vary by year) spike prices 25-35% for 4-5 days. Outside those windows, winter is genuinely peaceful on Dead Sea Road North.

Booking Tips for Dead Sea

Insider tips for booking hotels in Dead Sea.

Book mid-week to avoid Amman weekend crowds

Fridays and Saturdays are Jordan's weekend, and Amman residents drive down to the Dead Sea Shore resort strip in force. Hotels like Ramada Resort and Holiday Inn on Dead Sea Highway see rates jump $30-50/night on those two days. Book Sunday through Thursday arrivals and you'll get quieter beaches and better rates. sometimes 20% lower than the same room on a Friday.

Don't confuse 'sea view' with 'beach access'

Several hotels on Dead Sea Road advertise sea views from upper floors but have no direct beach access. you'd need a 10-minute shuttle to the shore. Always confirm in writing that your room rate includes beach access, not just a view of the water. The hotels in our list that genuinely have private beach sections: Kempinski, Hilton, Mövenpick, Marriott, Ramada, Holiday Inn, and Dead Sea Spa Hotel.

Bring or buy SPF 50+ before you arrive

The Dead Sea sits at 430 meters below sea level, which actually reduces UV exposure slightly compared to regular sea level. But you're floating on your back for 20-30 minutes at a time with your face pointing at the sky. Hotel gift shops sell sunscreen at $12-18 per bottle. double the price of what you'd pay at a pharmacy in Amman's Downtown area or at a LuLu hypermarket on Airport Road. Stock up before heading to Sweimeh.

Spa treatments sell out. book before you arrive

At Mövenpick Resort & Spa and Kempinski Hotel Ishtar, the signature Dead Sea mud treatments and massage packages book up 3-5 days in advance during March-May and October. We've seen guests arrive for a wellness weekend and find zero availability for their dates. Email the hotel spa directly after booking your room. most will hold a treatment slot for confirmed guests before online slots open to day visitors.

The public beach near Amman Beach resort is genuinely free

If you're on a tight budget or want to experience the Dead Sea without paying resort rates, there's a public access stretch near the Amman Beach public resort on Dead Sea Road, about 5 km south of the main Sweimeh strip. Entry to public beach facilities runs JD 5-8 per person. It's more crowded on weekends and the facilities are basic, but the water is identical to what you'd float in at Kempinski.

Eid holiday blackout: book 3 months ahead or skip it

During Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the entire Dead Sea resort strip transforms into one massive Jordanian family gathering. It's joyful and chaotic. Every hotel from Dead Sea Spa Hotel to Kempinski fills completely, rates jump 30-40%, and Dead Sea Highway traffic on the first day can take 2+ hours from Amman instead of the usual 75 minutes. Book 3 months out for those dates or plan your trip for the following week when prices drop back sharply.

Hotels in Dead Sea — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Dead Sea.

Which area is best for staying at the Dead Sea?

Sweimeh on Dead Sea Road is the clear winner. That's where you get direct shore access, the resort strip, and most of the spa hotels within a 5-minute walk of the water. Amman is 65 km away. fine for business, but you'll need a car or taxi every time you want to float.

What's the cheapest decent hotel at the Dead Sea?

Dead Sea Spa Hotel on Sweimeh's Dead Sea Road comes in at $55-90/night and holds a solid 7.2 rating. It's not glamorous, but the beach access is real and the mineral pools work. Don't expect the spa pampering of Kempinski. but at half the price, that's the trade-off.

Is it worth paying for a luxury resort at the Dead Sea?

Yes, if you're going for the full experience. The Kempinski Hotel Ishtar on Dead Sea Shore runs $280-420/night and genuinely earns its 9.1 rating with private beach sections, serious spa facilities, and immaculate grounds. The Hilton Dead Sea at $260-390/night is just behind it and feels less corporate. Both are worth it for a special trip. just book the spa treatments in advance because they fill up.

How far is the Dead Sea from Amman?

About 65 km from Downtown Amman, which is roughly 60-75 minutes by car depending on traffic on the Dead Sea Highway. Taxis from Amman's 7th Circle area run around JD 25-35 one way. There's no direct public bus, so most people either rent a car or join a day-tour from Amman.

What's the best time of year to visit the Dead Sea?

March through May is peak sweet spot. temperatures sit at 25-32°C, the resort pools are open, and hotel prices are still reasonable at $120-190/night for mid-range options. Avoid July and August. It hits 40°C+ and even the sea doesn't cool you down. November through February is cheapest at $55-120/night but some outdoor areas close.

Do Dead Sea hotels have private beach access?

Most of the Sweimeh resort strip hotels do. Mövenpick, Kempinski, Hilton, Marriott, and Ramada all have private sections of Dead Sea Shore with sun loungers and changing facilities. Budget options like Dead Sea Spa Hotel have shared beach access, which is still functional but more crowded on weekends. Always confirm in writing before booking because 'beach access' occasionally means a shared public stretch 10 minutes from the hotel.

Are there hotels in Amman that make sense for a Dead Sea trip?

Two of our 10 picks are Amman-based. Ashtar Hotel in Downtown Amman at $70-95/night works if you're combining the Dead Sea with Amman sightseeing near the Roman Citadel or Rainbow Street. Grand Hyatt Amman on Zahran Street in Shmeisani ($180-249/night) is built for business travelers flying in and out of Queen Alia International Airport. Neither is ideal if the Dead Sea itself is your main reason for being there.

Can you swim at the Dead Sea all year round?

Technically yes, but winter months (December through February) see air temperatures drop to 15-20°C, which makes the outdoor experience unpleasant even if the water itself stays warmer. The resort pools along Dead Sea Road are heated year-round. Summer floating is fine before 9am and after 5pm. between those hours, the sun is brutal and sunscreen plus the salt water is a painful combination.

What should I know about Dead Sea hotel prices on weekends?

Fridays and Saturdays are the Jordanian weekend, and Amman residents flock to the Sweimeh resort strip in numbers. Hotels like Ramada Resort and Holiday Inn can jump 20-30% on those two nights. Book mid-week if you can. you'll often find the same room $30-50 cheaper and the beach is genuinely quieter.

Is the Dead Sea region safe for tourists?

Completely. The resort strip along Dead Sea Shore Road in Sweimeh is well-patrolled and entirely tourist-oriented. Bethany Beyond the Jordan, about 10 km north of the main resort cluster, is a UNESCO-recognized pilgrimage site with regular visitors. Standard travel common sense applies. don't leave valuables visible in rental cars parked at Wadi Mujib trailheads.

What are the best day trips from Dead Sea hotels?

Mount Nebo is 30 km from Sweimeh and you can see both Israel and Jordan from the summit on a clear day. Madaba with its famous mosaic map is another 15 km from Nebo. Wadi Mujib canyon, which starts right on Dead Sea Road about 40 km south, is one of Jordan's best hikes. All three are doable in a single day if you have a car.

Do Dead Sea hotels include spa access in the room rate?

It varies significantly. Mövenpick Resort & Spa and Crowne Plaza Jordan Dead Sea usually include mineral pool access in the base rate, but the treatment rooms cost extra ($50-120 per session). Kempinski Hotel Ishtar's spa is exceptional but almost entirely à la carte. Check carefully what's included. 'spa hotel' on a listing doesn't always mean free spa access.
