Lotus Hotel Mombasa

Mombasa Island, Mombasa $45–75/night 7.2/10

Lotus Hotel sits on Cathedral Road on Mombasa Island, a short walk from Fort Jesus and the Old Town. Rooms are basic but clean, with reliable air conditioning and decent Wi-Fi. The rooftop terrace catches a good breeze and has views over the town. Staff are friendly and helpful with arranging tuk-tuks and local tours. A solid base for exploring the old city without spending much.

Hotel Splendid Mombasa hotel interior
#2

Hotel Splendid Mombasa

Mombasa Old Town, Mombasa $60–90/night 7.6/10

Hotel Splendid is right on Moi Avenue in the heart of Mombasa town, making it easy to walk to the famous elephant tusks arch and the ferry terminal. Rooms are modest but well-maintained, and the on-site restaurant serves good Swahili coastal food. The building has an old-school colonial feel that gives it some character. It gets some street noise, so ask for a room facing the inner courtyard. Good choice for budget travelers who want a central location.

Bamburi Beach Hotel hotel interior
#3

Bamburi Beach Hotel

Bamburi Beach, Mombasa $110–165/night 8/10

Bamburi Beach Hotel sits directly on the beach in the Bamburi area north of Mombasa, about 10 kilometers from the city center. The property has a large pool, kids activities, and direct beach access with calm, shallow water ideal for families. Rooms are spacious and have balconies facing the Indian Ocean. Food at the main restaurant is consistent, though the buffet gets repetitive after a few days. Nearby Haller Park and the Bamburi Nature Trail are easy half-day trips.

Nyali Beach Hotel hotel interior
#4

Nyali Beach Hotel

Nyali, Mombasa $130–190/night 8.2/10

Nyali Beach Hotel is one of the original beach resorts on this stretch of coast, sitting on a long clean beach in the Nyali suburb north of Mombasa Island. The grounds are large and well-maintained, with mature gardens running down to the water. Rooms in the newer wing are significantly better than the older block, so specify when booking. The proximity to Nyali Centre mall makes it convenient for shopping and dining outside the hotel. Water sports can be arranged directly on the beach.

Mombasa Continental Resort hotel interior
#5

Mombasa Continental Resort

Shanzu Beach, Mombasa $145–210/night 8.3/10

Mombasa Continental Resort occupies a quiet stretch of Shanzu Beach, further north than Bamburi and noticeably less crowded. The resort is large and fairly self-contained, with multiple pools, a full spa, and several dining options on the property. Rooms are comfortable and recently renovated, with good ocean-facing balconies on the upper floors. Service is attentive and the staff-to-guest ratio feels generous. The beach here is clean and the reef offshore makes for decent snorkeling at low tide.

Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa hotel interior
#6

Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa

Diani Beach, Ukunda $160–230/night 8.6/10

Diani Reef is a long-established resort sitting on one of the best stretches of Diani Beach, about 35 kilometers south of Mombasa city. The property is polished and well-run, with a beautiful beach front, multiple pools, and a spa that is genuinely good. Couples tend to do well here because the grounds are large enough to feel private and the sunset views from the beach bar are hard to beat. The drive from Mombasa requires crossing the Likoni ferry, which adds some time but is part of the coastal experience. Request a sea-view room on the upper floor for the best outlook.

Severin Sea Lodge hotel interior
#7

Severin Sea Lodge

Bamburi, Mombasa $175–240/night 8.7/10

Severin Sea Lodge sits in lush gardens on Bamburi Beach and consistently ranks among the best mid-range options on the north coast. The resort has a strong reputation for its food, with a seafood restaurant that sources locally and puts out consistently good meals. Rooms are well-appointed and the thatched bungalow-style accommodation gives it a more authentic coastal feel than the blocky high-rise resorts nearby. A PADI dive center operates from the beach and the house reef is accessible by boat. The smaller scale of the property means service is more personal than at larger all-inclusive competitors.

Leopard Beach Resort and Spa hotel interior
#8

Leopard Beach Resort and Spa

Diani Beach, Ukunda $190–245/night 8.5/10

Leopard Beach Resort is set on a rocky headland on Diani Beach, giving it a slightly different feel from the flat sandy stretches further up the coast. The elevated position means some rooms have dramatic ocean views, particularly the sea-view suites. The property has multiple pools, a well-regarded spa, and a beach area with sunbeds and water sports rentals. Dining is strong, with a good mix of international and Swahili dishes on the menu. It sits close to Diani Shopping Centre, which is convenient for picking up supplies or finding alternative restaurants in the evening.

Hemingways Watamu hotel interior
#9

Hemingways Watamu

Watamu Beach, Watamu $280–420/night 9.1/10

Hemingways Watamu is a small luxury boutique hotel on Watamu Beach, roughly 100 kilometers north of Mombasa near the Watamu Marine National Park. The property has only a handful of suites and the level of personalized service reflects that. Rooms are beautifully designed with high ceilings, hand-crafted furniture, and private terraces. The in-house chef prepares meals using local ingredients and can accommodate dietary requests easily. Watamu itself is a quieter, less developed alternative to Diani and suits travelers who want exclusivity over party atmosphere.

Alfajiri Villas hotel interior
#10

Alfajiri Villas

Diani Beach South, Ukunda $350–600/night 9.4/10

Alfajiri Villas sits on a cliff above the southern end of Diani Beach and is one of the most exclusive small properties on the entire Kenyan coast. The three villas each come with private staff, a dedicated chef, and a personal butler, making it essentially a private residence rental rather than a typical hotel stay. The design mixes African art and craftsmanship with open-air architecture that takes full advantage of the ocean views. Rates include all meals, laundry, and airport transfers, which justifies the price point for groups or couples celebrating something special. Booking in advance is essential as availability is very limited.

Where to Stay in Mombasa

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

North Coast vs South Coast: Which side is right for you?

The north coast (Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu, Mtwapa) is convenient. You're connected to Mombasa Island by Nyali Bridge, matatus run constantly, and you can actually day-trip to Fort Jesus or the Old Town spice stalls on Ndia Kuu Road without it being a project.

The south coast (Diani, Tiwi, Galu Beach) is more beautiful but more isolated. The Likoni Ferry is the only non-bridge crossing, and queues can eat 45 minutes out of your day. If you're going to Diani, commit to it. Don't plan daily trips back into Mombasa.

Don't get fooled by beachfront claims

We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. A hotel lists 'beachfront' but the actual beach is a coral-rocky strip that disappears at high tide, or access runs through a neighboring resort's grounds. Ask specifically: is there sand, is it swimmable, and what's the tidal situation?

The beaches on the north coast between Bamburi Beach Road and the ocean are generally good year-round. Diani Beach is consistently the best sand quality on the Kenyan coast, with soft white sand stretching several kilometers south from Ukunda town. If beach quality is your top priority, Diani wins.

Getting from Mombasa Moi International Airport to your hotel

The airport sits about 13 km west of Mombasa city center, off the A109 Nairobi highway. A metered taxi to Mombasa Island takes 20-30 minutes and should cost $10-15. To Nyali or Bamburi, budget $15-25. To Diani Beach, it's a 45-60 minute drive plus the Likoni Ferry: expect $35-50.

Uber and Bolt both work in Mombasa and usually run 20-30% cheaper than taxi touts outside arrivals. Don't take the first price someone shouts at you in the arrivals hall. Walk to the taxi rank, or just open the app.

Old Town Mombasa: staying here vs. visiting for a day

The Old Town around Fort Jesus and Mbaraki Road is genuinely atmospheric. The carved Swahili doors, the call to prayer echoing off coral-stone walls, the smell of pilau from street stalls near Biashara Street. It's one of East Africa's best urban walks.

But staying here is a different calculation. Hotel Splendid Mombasa in the Old Town is well-run at $60-90/night, but nightlife noise and narrow streets make it less comfortable for families or light sleepers. Better plan: stay on the north coast beach, and take a half-day trip into Old Town. You get the atmosphere without the downsides.

How to do Diani Beach properly

Diani is 35 km south of Mombasa but feels like a different world. The strip along Diani Beach Road has everything: dive shops, beach bars, kite-surfing at Forty Thieves Beach Bar, and supermarkets at Nakumatt Diani for self-catering. You genuinely don't need to leave for a week.

The best resorts sit on the southern stretch toward Galu Beach, where Leopard Beach Resort and Alfajiri Villas are. This end is quieter, the sand is better, and you're 5 minutes by tuk-tuk from the main Diani Beach Road action. Avoid the very northern end of Diani near the ferry junction: it's noisy and the beach is rockier.

The real cost of a Mombasa beach holiday

Hotel rates alone don't tell the whole story. On top of your room at $45-600/night, budget around $15-25/day on food if you're eating at local joints and mid-range restaurants along Bamburi Beach Road. Alcohol at resort beach bars runs $4-7 a drink. Activities like snorkeling trips to Mombasa Marine National Park run $30-50 per person.

The north coast is slightly cheaper for daily spending than Diani, where everything is marked up for the resort crowd. A mashua (traditional dhow) sunset trip from the beach typically costs $25-40 per person. Haggle politely, but don't go below a fair price: the guys running these are small operators, not tour conglomerates.

Mombasa's best neighborhoods

If you want the beach, go north to Bamburi or Nyali first. Diani is stunning but adds a ferry crossing or a long bridge detour to everything, so know what you're signing up for.

Mombasa Island & Old Town 2 vetted hotels

History, culture, and the cheapest beds in town.

Mombasa Island is where the city actually lives. Fort Jesus on Ndia Kuu Road, the Portuguese-era Old Town, the chaos of Moi Avenue and the Marikiti fruit market. It's real, dense, and has almost no beach.

Lotus Hotel sits near Treasury Square and is a solid budget base at $45-75/night. You're 10 minutes on foot from Fort Jesus and 5 minutes from the Old Town's carved-door streets. Hotel Splendid in the Old Town proper adds more character for $60-90/night, with Swahili-style touches and a rooftop that actually catches a breeze.

This is the right base if you're here for culture and history, not sun-loungers. For beach days, you're looking at a 20-30 minute matatu ride north to Bamburi or Nyali.

Best areas Old Town, Treasury Square, Mbaraki
Price range $45-90/night
Best for Culture seekers, budget travelers, history buffs
Avoid Moi Avenue bus stage area after dark. persistent touts and poor lighting
Best months July-September, January-February
Nyali & Bamburi Beach 3 vetted hotels

The north coast sweet spot: beach access, city connections, good value.

Nyali is the first beach area north of Mombasa Island, just across Nyali Bridge. It's popular with Nairobi weekenders and expat families for good reason: the beach is clean, Nyali Cinemax and Nakumatt Nyali are nearby for supplies, and you can be in Mombasa Old Town in 20 minutes by matatu.

Bamburi sits a further 4-5 km north along Bamburi Beach Road. It's more of a resort strip, with craft markets and beach restaurants lining the seafront. Bamburi Beach Hotel runs $110-165/night and is genuinely family-friendly with good shallow beach entry. Severin Sea Lodge at $175-240/night is the top-rated property on this stretch, with a serious dive center right on site.

If this is your first time in Mombasa and you want beach plus flexibility, Nyali or Bamburi is where you should base yourself. You're not trapped south of the ferry and the matatu network is solid.

Best areas Nyali, Bamburi Beach, Shanzu
Price range $110-240/night
Best for Families, first-timers, divers, anyone wanting beach plus city access
Avoid The stretch near Mtwapa Creek at night. it's a bar strip that gets rowdy
Best months January-March, July-August
Diani Beach 3 vetted hotels

Kenya's best beach. Just know what you're getting into.

Diani is the postcard. White sand, turquoise Indian Ocean, palm trees that actually lean over the water. The beach runs for nearly 17 km along the B8 south of Ukunda town, and the southern end near Galu Beach is the most pristine.

Diani Reef Beach Resort at $160-230/night and Leopard Beach Resort at $190-245/night are both on the main strip, roughly 5-7 km south of Ukunda. Alfajiri Villas at $350-600/night sits further south on the clifftops above Galu Beach, and it's a different category entirely: private, quiet, genuinely luxurious. Worth it if you can stretch the budget.

The trade-off is isolation. The Likoni Ferry is the main connection to Mombasa, and the crossing can queue for 40 minutes during peak hours. Plan to spend most of your trip south of the ferry. It's not a hardship, it's just a different holiday to north-coast Mombasa.

Best areas Galu Beach, central Diani Beach Road, Tiwi end
Price range $160-600/night
Best for Couples, honeymooners, beach purists, kite-surfers
Avoid The far northern end of Diani near the Likoni junction. rocky beach and noisy road traffic
Best months January-March, July-October
Watamu Beach 1 vetted hotel

Remote, world-class, and worth the 2-hour drive.

Watamu sits 105 km north of Mombasa, past Kilifi Creek and through the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest reserve on the B8. It's a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the marine park here is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots on the East African coast.

Hemingways Watamu at $280-420/night is the benchmark property. It's right on Watamu Bay, about 2 km from the Watamu Marine National Park entry point, and their deep-sea fishing operation is legitimate, not a tourist gimmick. The Gedi Ruins, an abandoned 13th-century Swahili settlement, are 4 km inland and worth a half-day.

Come here if you want total escape and you're willing to pay for it. This isn't a day-trip destination. Commit to 3+ nights to make the drive worthwhile.

Best areas Watamu Bay, Blue Lagoon Beach
Price range $280-420/night
Best for Luxury travelers, divers, anglers, nature lovers
Avoid Booking here for just 1 night. the transfer time makes it pointless
Best months October-March

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Mombasa.

Romantic

Diani Beach South, specifically the clifftop stretch near Galu Beach, is where Alfajiri Villas gives you private Indian Ocean sunsets with zero other guests in sight. It's the most private beach setting on the Kenyan coast.

Culture

Old Town Mombasa around Fort Jesus and Ndia Kuu Road is a genuine 500-year-old Swahili port city, and you can walk the whole thing in 90 minutes. Hotel Splendid puts you right in the middle of it for $60-90/night.

Family

Bamburi Beach is the best family base: shallow, calm water, Haller Park wildlife sanctuary 10 minutes away, and Bamburi Beach Hotel's kids' facilities are actually good. Rates start at $110/night.

Budget

Mombasa Island is your budget home base, with Lotus Hotel near Treasury Square running $45-75/night and street food on Biashara Street feeding you well for under $5 a meal.

Beach

Diani Beach's 17-km stretch of white sand is the best on the Kenyan coast, full stop. Leopard Beach Resort at $190-245/night sits right on the best part of it.

Foodie

Nyali has the best restaurant strip outside the island itself, with Tamarind Mombasa on Cement Silo Road serving some of the finest seafood in East Africa. Pair it with a night at Nyali Beach Hotel nearby.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Mombasa

When to visit Mombasa and what to pay.

Peak

Peak Season (Dec-Mar)

Avg hotel: $130-350/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 28-32°C

December through January is the busiest stretch, driven by European winter escapes and the Kenyan school holiday in August overlapping with the Christmas-New Year period. Diani and Watamu hotels book out 3-4 months ahead for the Christmas week, and prices jump 30-40% above shoulder rates. Book Alfajiri Villas or Hemingways by September at the latest if you want peak-week availability.

Budget Friendly

Long Rains (Apr-Jun)

Avg hotel: $60-160/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-30°C

April and May are the masika (long rains): daily afternoon downpours, high humidity, and some beach hotels on Diani shutting for 2-6 weeks of maintenance. Rates drop to $60-160/night at most properties. It's not all bad: the rains are usually afternoon-only, mornings are clear, and the landscape turns genuinely lush. Avoid this period for diving though. visibility in the marine parks drops significantly.

Warming Up

Short Rains & Warmup (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $100-210/nightCrowds: Low-ModerateTemp: 26-31°C

October brings the vuli, or short rains: lighter and more sporadic than April-May, typically falling in quick bursts. Temperatures climb back toward 30-31°C and the sea warms up nicely. Hotel rates are mid-range at $100-210/night and crowds are thin enough that you can actually walk Diani Beach without tripping over sun-loungers. October is genuinely underrated for Mombasa.

Booking Tips for Mombasa

Insider tips for booking hotels in Mombasa.

Cross the Likoni Ferry during off-peak hours

The Likoni Ferry runs 24 hours but queues between 7-9am and 5-7pm can add 40-60 minutes to any south coast journey. Cross before 7am or between 10am-3pm and you'll sail through in under 10 minutes. If you're staying in Diani, schedule any Mombasa city trips on this logic or you'll spend a significant chunk of your holiday queuing.

Book Diani and Watamu 3-4 months ahead for Christmas

The Christmas-New Year window (December 23. January 3) is when Alfajiri Villas, Hemingways, and Leopard Beach Resort all sell out completely. Prices at these properties hit $300-600/night during this window. If you're flexible on dates, January 6 onward sees the same weather but 20-30% lower rates and far fewer people.

Don't trust 'direct beach access' without asking specifically

Several properties along Bamburi Beach Road and the Nyali strip advertise beach access that involves walking through a neighboring hotel's grounds, crossing a road, or navigating a coral-rock path. Ask the hotel directly: 'Is there sand beach in front of your property, and is it swimmable at mid-tide?' If they hesitate, that's your answer.

Use Bolt or Uber instead of airport touts

Mombasa Moi International Airport taxi touts quote $25-40 for rides that should cost $10-20. Bolt and Uber both operate in Mombasa city and work at the airport from the road just outside arrivals. The app saves you 30-40% on most rides, and you don't have to negotiate. Data works fine on Safaricom or Airtel SIM cards, available at the airport for around $2.

Carry small Kenya Shilling notes for tuk-tuks and matatus

Most tuk-tuk rides in Bamburi or Nyali run 200-400 KES and drivers rarely have change for anything above 500 KES. Matatus on the north coast road charge 30-60 KES per leg and don't accept card. Get small notes at any Equity Bank or KCB ATM on Digo Road or Nyali Centre before heading to the beach strips.

The Old Town is best before 10am

By mid-morning, the Fort Jesus area fills with tour groups and the persistent guides outside the Portuguese Gate on Ndia Kuu Road get relentless. Go at 7-9am: the light is better, the streets are quiet, and you can walk from Leven Steps down to the Old Port without anyone trying to show you their cousin's curio shop. Fort Jesus entry is $12 for non-residents.

Hotels in Mombasa — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Mombasa.

What's the best area to stay in Mombasa?

Nyali and Bamburi Beach are your safest bets for first-timers. You get beach access, easy matatu connections into Mombasa Island via Nyali Bridge, and hotels at $110-190/night. Diani Beach is arguably prettier, but it's south of the island and crossing the Likoni Ferry adds 30-45 minutes each way to any trip into town.

Is Mombasa Island itself worth staying on?

It depends what you're after. Mombasa Island has Fort Jesus, the Old Town spice markets on Ndia Kuu Road, and cheaper hotels like Lotus Hotel at $45-75/night. But there's no real beach on the island itself, and some streets around the Moi Avenue bus stage get sketchy after dark. Good for culture, not for sunbathing.

How far is Diani Beach from Mombasa city center?

About 30-35 km by road, but budget at least 60-90 minutes. The Likoni Ferry runs all day but queues can stretch to 45 minutes during rush hour. Once you're across, it's another 20-25 minutes south on the B8 road through Ukunda to most resorts.

When is the best time to visit Mombasa?

January through March is the sweet spot: dry, hot at around 30-32°C, and hotel prices haven't spiked yet. July and August bring peak-season crowds and prices jump 25-40% at beach resorts. The long rains hit April-May, and while rates drop sharply, some smaller hotels actually close for maintenance.

What's the cheapest decent hotel in Mombasa?

Lotus Hotel on Treasury Square, Mombasa Island, runs $45-75/night and it's genuinely fine for budget travelers. The location near Digo Road puts you walking distance from Fort Jesus (about 10 minutes) and the Old Town. Don't expect a pool or beach, but the rooms are clean and the price is hard to beat.

Are Mombasa beach hotels actually on the beach?

Most of the ones we list are, but check carefully before booking anything not on our list. 'Beachfront' in Mombasa marketing can mean 'across a road from the beach' or 'beach access via a 10-minute walk through a neighbor's property.' Nyali Beach Hotel and Bamburi Beach Hotel both have legitimate direct beach access.

What's the difference between Bamburi and Nyali beaches?

Nyali is closer to Mombasa Island (about 4 km from the city center via Nyali Bridge) and slightly more upscale. Bamburi is 8-10 km north and more of a resort strip, with beach boys and craft stalls along Bamburi Beach Road. Both are fine; Nyali just feels a bit more settled and less hustler-heavy.

Is Watamu worth the extra distance?

Absolutely, if you're staying 3+ nights and want something special. Watamu Beach is about 105 km north of Mombasa, roughly a 2-hour drive up the B8 highway. Hemingways Watamu sits right on the beach near the Watamu Marine National Park, and the snorkeling and fishing here are genuinely world-class.

How do I get around between Mombasa beaches?

Matatus (shared minibuses) run frequently along the north coast road between Mombasa Island, Nyali, Bamburi, and Shanzu for around 30-60 KES per leg. Tuk-tuks are good for short hops within a beach area and run about 200-400 KES. For Diani or Watamu, you're looking at a hired car or taxi, budgeting $30-50 for a one-way transfer.

Which Mombasa hotels are best for families?

Bamburi Beach Hotel is the obvious pick, sitting right on Bamburi Beach with kids' pools and shallow beach entry. Mombasa Continental Resort at Shanzu Beach is another strong option with more space and structured kids' activities. Both run $110-210/night, which covers the full family-resort experience without going full luxury.

Are there good luxury hotels near Mombasa?

Yes, and they're worth paying for. Alfajiri Villas at Diani Beach South runs $350-600/night and is about as good as the Kenyan coast gets: private pool villas, cliffside Indian Ocean views, and genuinely attentive service. Hemingways Watamu at $280-420/night is the other standout, with deep-sea fishing right from the hotel's beach on Watamu Bay.

Is it safe to walk around Mombasa at night?

On the beach strips (Nyali, Bamburi, Diani) you're generally fine sticking to the main hotel road after dark. Mombasa Island is more mixed: the Old Town around Mbarak Hinawy Road is mostly fine, but avoid wandering off toward the Moi Avenue bus stage or the Marikiti market area alone after 9pm. Use tuk-tuks for anything over a 5-minute walk at night.
