A solid budget option sitting a few blocks from Sukhbaatar Square in central Ulaanbaatar. Rooms are small but clean, with reliable hot water and decent Wi-Fi. The staff speak good English and are genuinely helpful with booking tours and transport. Breakfast is basic but included. Good base for exploring the city without spending much.

Ider Guesthouse hotel interior
#2

Ider Guesthouse

, Murun $55–85/night 7.9/10

Murun is the main gateway to Khovsgol Province and this guesthouse is the most reliable sleep in town. Rooms are simple wooden affairs with shared bathrooms down the hall. The owner arranges horse treks and lake transfers at fair prices. Hot meals are cooked to order every evening. A practical and honest place for adventurers heading north.

Khuvsgul Lake Hotel hotel interior
#3

Khuvsgul Lake Hotel

, Khatgal $105–155/night 8.2/10

This hotel sits directly on the southern shore of Lake Khovsgol, one of the most scenic spots in Central Asia. Cabins and standard rooms are basic but well heated, which matters given the cold nights even in summer. The lake views from the dining terrace are genuinely hard to beat. Staff organize fishing, kayaking and horse riding without pressure. Bring cash because card machines rarely work here.

Altai Tavanbogd Lodge hotel interior
#4

Altai Tavanbogd Lodge

, Olgii $110–160/night 8/10

Olgii is the capital of Bayan-Olgii and the main entry point for the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, and this lodge is the best accommodation option in the region. Rooms are warm and modern by local standards, with good pressure in the showers. The Kazakh owners serve excellent lamb dishes in the restaurant each evening. Guides for eagle hunting festivals and glacier treks are organized on site. A genuinely special part of Mongolia that most tourists skip.

Three Camel Lodge hotel interior
#5

Three Camel Lodge

Gobi Desert, Dalanzadgad $130–210/night 8.8/10

Three Camel Lodge is the most recognized eco-camp in the Gobi Desert, located near the Flaming Cliffs outside Dalanzadgad. Traditional ger accommodations are spacious, heated by wood stoves and far more comfortable than expected. The guided excursions to sand dunes, dinosaur fossil sites and nomadic families are well run and informative. Food in the main lodge is consistently good for such a remote location. Book months in advance because it fills up fast in summer.

Check Availability
Erdenet Chinggis Hotel hotel interior
#6

Erdenet Chinggis Hotel

, Erdenet $115–160/night 7.8/10

Erdenet is Mongolia second largest city and this is the best hotel in town, catering mainly to business travelers connected to the copper mining industry. Rooms are clean and functional with proper desks and fast internet. The hotel restaurant serves Mongolian and Russian influenced food at reasonable prices. It is not a tourist destination in the usual sense but the city is interesting for its Soviet urban planning. A solid professional option in a rarely visited city.

#7

Kherlen Hotel

, Choibalsan $100–145/night 7.5/10

Choibalsan is the main city of eastern Mongolia and this hotel is the most comfortable place to sleep in the region. Rooms are simple with Soviet-era furniture but beds are firm and clean. The staff are friendly and can organize transportation toward the Khalkh River area. Eastern Mongolia sees almost no foreign tourists, making this a great base for genuine off-the-beaten-path exploration. Meals are straightforward but portions are generous.

Terelj Hotel hotel interior
#8

Terelj Hotel

Terelj National Park, Gachuurt $280–450/night 8.7/10

Terelj Hotel sits inside the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park about 55 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, surrounded by granite rock formations and pine forest. Luxury ger suites have underfloor heating, proper beds and private bathrooms, pulling off the glamping experience convincingly. The infinity pool overlooking the valley is genuinely stunning on clear mornings. Horse riding, hiking and archery are organized daily. This is the place to stay if you want a luxury Mongolian nature experience without flying far from the capital.

Check Availability
Ulaanbaatar Hotel hotel interior
#9

Ulaanbaatar Hotel

City Center, Ulaanbaatar $140–195/night 8.1/10

The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is a Soviet-era landmark right on Peace Avenue facing Sukhbaatar Square, and the location is unbeatable for sightseeing. Rooms were renovated and are comfortable if a little dated in style. The central position means traffic noise filters up at night so ask for a higher floor. The restaurant downstairs serves a reliable mix of Mongolian and international dishes. A dependable mid-range choice for those who want to walk everywhere.

Check Availability
Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar hotel interior
#10

Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar

Zaisan District, Ulaanbaatar $260–420/night 9.1/10

The Shangri-La is the best international luxury hotel in Mongolia by a clear margin, sitting in the upscale Zaisan area of Ulaanbaatar. Rooms are large, impeccably designed and have the kind of deep soaking bathtubs you do not expect in Ulaanbaatar. The lobby mall and multiple restaurants including the excellent Shang Palace Chinese restaurant elevate the stay considerably. Service is professional and genuinely warm. A complete contrast to the steppe outside and worth every dollar if you want comfort.

Where to Stay in Mongolia

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel. Here's what you need to know.

Ulaanbaatar: where to stay and what to skip

The City Center district is your default base. You're within 10 minutes walk of Sukhbaatar Square, the National Museum on Juulchin Street, and the State Department Store on Peace Avenue. Accommodation ranges from $45 guesthouses to $420 luxury rooms. the spread is wider here than anywhere else in Mongolia.

Avoid booking anything that says 'near the train station' without checking a map. The Zamchin district around the main railway station sounds convenient but puts you 40 minutes from the actual city attractions by bus. We've seen this mistake many times. Stick to addresses north of Peace Avenue if you want a walkable stay.

Gobi Desert lodges: expectations vs. reality

The Gobi is stunning, but getting there takes effort. Dalanzadgad is 580 km south of Ulaanbaatar. Fly with Hunnu Air or MIAT for around $90-140 each way, or face a 9-hour drive on roads that are partly unpaved. Factor this into your budget before comparing lodge prices.

Three Camel Lodge near Dalanzadgad is genuinely world-class. But most budget ger camps near the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag don't tell you upfront that facilities are basic and wind cuts through canvas walls at night. If you're not prepared for that, book the lodge, not the camp.

Khuvsgul Lake: the north is worth the extra travel

Khatgal village sits on the southern tip of Khuvsgul Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia by volume. The surrounding taiga forest and the lake itself are the draw. Come in July or August for the best weather. Temperatures drop fast in September and most lodges close by October.

Fly into Murun Airport from Ulaanbaatar, not into Khatgal. Murun is the regional hub with actual flights. From Murun, a shared minivan to Khatgal takes about 90 minutes and costs under $5 per seat. Don't book a hotel in Murun thinking it's the same thing. it's a working provincial town with nothing particularly scenic about it.

Western Mongolia and the Altai region

Olgii is the capital of Bayan-Olgii Province, close to the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park and the snow-capped peaks on the Chinese and Russian borders. This is eagle hunter territory. The Golden Eagle Festival runs in early October and draws serious photographers from around the world, pushing accommodation demand sharply in a town with limited beds.

Altai Tavanbogd Lodge starts at $110/night and is your best bet in Olgii. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for October visits. Don't expect Ulaanbaatar-level amenities here. The point is access to some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Central Asia, not thread-count.

How to handle Naadam Festival accommodation

Naadam runs July 11-15. The main events happen at the National Sports Stadium on Naadam Street and at the horse racing grounds in Khui Doloon Hudag, 35 km west of the city center. Half of Mongolia descends on Ulaanbaatar that week. Hotel prices jump fast and availability disappears faster.

Book by April for Naadam week. If you miss that window, look at Terelj National Park hotels. they're 55 km out but still accessible for day trips to the stadium. Don't assume a guesthouse listed online as available will still be available in June. The good ones fill up months ahead.

Budget travel in Mongolia: what actually works

Oasis Guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar's Sukhbaatar District is the benchmark for budget stays. At $45-75/night, you're getting a clean room close to real city life, not a dormitory smelling of instant noodles next to a highway. Ider Guesthouse in Murun is similarly solid at $55-85/night for the northern route.

Budget travel in Mongolia is less about finding cheap hotels and more about managing transport costs. A domestic flight to Dalanzadgad or Olgii can cost $120-200 return. Shared minivans are the local solution for medium distances and cost a fraction of the price. Save your accommodation budget for the Gobi, where the experience justifies spending more.

Explore Mongolia by city

We cover 3 destinations across Mongolia. Pick a city for a dedicated hotel guide with neighborhoods, seasonal tips, and our vetted picks.

Mongolia's best hotel regions

Start with Ulaanbaatar. It's the entry point for almost every trip, and getting your first night right matters more here than almost anywhere. After that, your priorities split fast: Gobi or lake country.

Ulaanbaatar 3 vetted hotels

Mongolia's only real city. chaotic, cold, and completely necessary.

Almost every Mongolia trip starts and ends here. Ulaanbaatar sits in the Tuul River valley, ringed by hills, and holds nearly half the country's entire population. The City Center district around Sukhbaatar Square is where you want to be based. Peace Avenue runs east-west through the heart of it, with restaurants, banks, and the State Department Store all within a 15-minute walk.

The hotel range here is the widest in the country. Oasis Guesthouse in Sukhbaatar District gives you honest budget value at $45-75/night. Ulaanbaatar Hotel in the City Center sits at $140-195/night with a central location that's hard to beat. Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar in the Zaisan District is the luxury ceiling at $260-420/night, and it earns it.

Avoid the area around the Narantuul Market (the 'Black Market') for accommodation. It's worth visiting during the day as a market experience, but staying nearby means longer commutes to the main sights and some sketchy late-night foot traffic. Taxi costs from the City Center to Zaisan run $3-6. From City Center to the Chinggis Khaan Statue complex east of the city it's about a 45-minute drive.

Best areas City Center, Sukhbaatar District
Price range $45-420/night
Best for First-time visitors, city exploration, transit base
Avoid Train station area, Narantuul Market surroundings
Best months May-September

Gobi Desert 1 vetted hotel

The Gobi delivers on every photo you've seen. Getting there is the hard part.

Dalanzadgad is the gateway town for the Gobi, and it's a 580 km haul south of Ulaanbaatar. Fly with MIAT or Hunnu Air for $90-140 one way. From Dalanzadgad, most lodges organize pickups to the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag, the Yol Valley, and the Khongoryn Els sand dunes. These are not short drives. the Khongoryn Els are 180 km from town.

Three Camel Lodge is the standout here, rated 8.8 and priced $130-210/night including meals. It's not cheap, but it's genuinely one of the best-designed desert lodges in Asia. The ger accommodations are spacious and heated, the food is proper, and the camp sits in a location that gives you direct access to the classic Gobi landscapes without the grim reality of budget camps.

Budget camp options in the Gobi exist at $40-70/night but most lack reliable hot water and have open-air toilet facilities. If you're on a genuine budget, your money is better spent on a good guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar and a day trip rather than a cheap overnight in the desert.

Best areas Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), Three Camel Lodge vicinity
Price range $130-210/night
Best for Photography, wildlife, unique landscapes
Avoid Roadside budget camps with no reviews
Best months May-June, September

Northern Mongolia (Khuvsgul & Murun) 2 vetted hotels

Lake Khuvsgul is what happens when the steppe meets Siberia.

Khatgal village is the entry point for Khuvsgul Lake, and Murun is the regional transit hub 90 minutes to the south. The lake itself is 136 km long and holds nearly 2% of the world's fresh surface water. Khuvsgul Lake Hotel sits right in Khatgal at $105-155/night with direct lake access and an 8.2 rating. It's the most geographically precise hotel name in Mongolia.

Ider Guesthouse in Murun is the practical first-night option at $55-85/night. It's not fancy. But it's clean, well-rated at 7.9, and puts you in position for an early morning minivan to Khatgal without scrambling. Think of Murun as the logistics stop and Khatgal as the destination.

July and August are when Mongolian domestic tourists flood the lake area, particularly on weekends. Book Khuvsgul Lake Hotel at least 3-4 weeks ahead for July stays. Temperatures in June-August run 15-25°C around the lake, but the surrounding taiga still drops cold at night. Pack accordingly.

Best areas Khatgal village, Khuvsgul Lake shore
Price range $55-155/night
Best for Nature, kayaking, horse trekking, ice festival (winter)
Avoid Murun as a final destination. it's a transit town
Best months June-August
Browse all Northern Mongolia (Khuvsgul & Murun) hotels →
Western Mongolia (Olgii & Altai Region) 1 vetted hotel

Eagle hunters, snow peaks, and Kazakh culture. This is Mongolia's most remote region.

Olgii is the capital of Bayan-Olgii Province and the only real town near the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. The park sits on the borders of China and Russia, with peaks hitting 4,374 m at Khuiten Peak. Altai Tavanbogd Lodge at $110-160/night is your base here. it's rated 8.0 and earns its Hidden Gem status by being the only quality option in a region most travelers skip.

The Golden Eagle Festival in early October is the event that puts Olgii on the international radar. Kazakh eagle hunters from across the province compete, and the setting against the Altai foothills is visually unlike anything else in Mongolia. Accommodation books up completely 6-8 weeks out during festival week.

Getting to Olgii means a 2-hour flight from Ulaanbaatar or a very long overland trip. MIAT operates the route. Don't underestimate the altitude or the remoteness. This region rewards serious travelers, not people who want Western comforts on a wild-looking Instagram backdrop.

Best areas Olgii town, Altai Tavan Bogd National Park area
Price range $110-160/night
Best for Cultural immersion, trekking, eagle hunting festivals
Avoid Visiting without advance planning. services are limited
Best months July-August, early October (festival)

Terelj & Eastern Steppe 1 vetted hotel

Dramatic granite valleys an hour from the city. Mongolia's most accessible wilderness.

Terelj National Park starts just 55 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar, and Terelj Hotel in Gachuurt sits right at the park entrance. At $280-450/night it's the second most expensive option on our list. but the location is genuinely extraordinary. You're sleeping inside the park, with Turtle Rock and the Aryabal Meditation Temple both within 20 minutes by horse or vehicle.

This is the romantic pick of Mongolia. Couples and honeymooners who want dramatic steppe scenery without a week of overland travel consistently choose Terelj. The Gachuurt area before the park gate is where most day-trippers stop, so staying inside means you get the landscape after the crowds leave in the evening.

The eastern steppe beyond Terelj. heading toward Choibalsan and the Khentii region. is Chinggis Khaan's homeland. Kherlen Hotel in Choibalsan is the practical base for that region at $100-145/night, rated 7.5. It's utilitarian, but Choibalsan itself is a real Mongolian provincial city rather than a tourist construct.

Best areas Gachuurt, inside Terelj National Park
Price range $100-450/night
Best for Couples, nature, day trips from Ulaanbaatar
Avoid Budget camps right by the main road into Terelj. no privacy
Best months June-September

Central Mongolia (Erdenet & Orkhon Valley) 1 vetted hotel

Mongolia's second city and the historic heartland of the empire.

Erdenet is Mongolia's second-largest city, built around one of the world's largest copper mines. It's not a tourist destination by reputation, but it's a useful transit point for reaching the Orkhon Valley and Kharkhorin, site of the ancient capital Karakorum and the Erdene Zuu Monastery. Erdenet Chinggis Hotel at $115-160/night is the business-class option here, rated 7.8.

The hotel earns its Business Pick badge genuinely. Mining contractors and NGO workers make up most of the guest list. That means reliable Wi-Fi, professional service, and a functional business center. things that matter if you're not just here for the views. The city center around the main square is compact and walkable.

From Erdenet, the Orkhon Valley is roughly 200 km southeast. Most travelers heading there use Erdenet as a one-night stop before continuing toward Kharkhorin. The Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes. a mini-Gobi experience. sit about 280 km from Ulaanbaatar on the same route.

Best areas Erdenet city center, near main square
Price range $115-160/night
Best for Business travelers, Orkhon Valley access, Erdene Zuu visits
Avoid Expecting tourist infrastructure. this is a working city

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Mongolia.

Romantic Escape

Terelj National Park, 55 km from Ulaanbaatar, is the pick. Granite peaks, empty steppe, and a lodge that costs $280-450/night but delivers total privacy once the day-trippers leave.

Culture & History

Base yourself in Ulaanbaatar's City Center district, walking distance from the National Museum on Juulchin Street and Gandan Monastery. The Orkhon Valley, with Erdene Zuu Monastery and the ruins of Karakorum, is a day trip or overnight away.

Family Adventure

Terelj National Park works best for families with kids old enough to ride horses. Three Camel Lodge in the Gobi is the alternative for older children who can handle a 580 km journey and basic desert conditions.

Budget Travel

Sukhbaatar District in Ulaanbaatar is your zone, with Oasis Guesthouse starting at $45/night and city buses running for under $0.50 along Peace Avenue. Watch transport costs. domestic flights eat budgets faster than hotels do.

Foodie & City

Ulaanbaatar's City Center has the country's only real restaurant scene, concentrated around Seoul Street and the Narnii Road area. Traditional khorkhog and boodog. meat cooked with hot stones. are worth seeking out at local restaurants near the State Department Store.

Nature Immersion

Khatgal village on the southern shore of Khuvsgul Lake is the nature base, with 136 km of lake, taiga forest, and horse trails on the doorstep. July and August are peak months, with temperatures reaching 20-25°C on sunny days.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Mongolia. Most got cut immediately. Ger camps that post sunset photos but skip the part about shared pit toilets in -10°C? Gone. Ulaanbaatar guesthouses charging boutique prices for Soviet-era plumbing? Gone. We cut anything with manipulated review scores, misleading 'city center' claims that put you 40 minutes from Sukhbaatar Square, and lodges that market as 'luxury' but can't provide hot water reliably. What's left is honest.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

When to Visit Mongolia: Season by Season

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary dramatically. Here's what to expect each season.

Peak

Summer (June-August)

Avg hotel: $130-420/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 15-30°C

This is when Mongolia is fully alive. Naadam Festival on July 11-15 pushes Ulaanbaatar hotels to maximum prices and minimum availability. Khuvsgul Lake and Terelj fill with Mongolian domestic tourists on weekends. Book 2-3 months ahead for anything good, and expect to pay $50-100 more per night than the shoulder season equivalent.

Budget Friendly

Winter (November-March)

Avg hotel: $45-195/nightCrowds: LowTemp: -35-0°C

Ulaanbaatar is one of the coldest capital cities on earth, hitting -30°C to -35°C in January and February. Most ger camps and remote lodges close entirely from October through April. The Khuvsgul Ice Festival in March is the one compelling winter reason to visit the north. Hotel prices drop significantly, but running costs. warm clothes, taxis over public transit. add up.

How to Book Hotels in Mongolia

Smart booking strategies that save money without sacrificing quality.

Book Naadam week by April

The Naadam Festival runs July 11-15 every year and it's the single biggest accommodation crunch in Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar hotels can triple in price and sell out entirely. Book by April. not 'a few weeks before.' If you miss the window, look at Terelj Hotel in the national park as a 55 km commuter base to the events.

Factor in domestic flights. they change your budget math

A Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad flight costs $90-140 one way on MIAT or Hunnu Air. Ulaanbaatar to Olgii for the Altai region runs similar. These are not optional expenses if you want to reach the best landscapes without losing 3-4 days to overland driving on unpaved roads. Build flights into your accommodation budget calculations from the start.

Don't confuse 'near Khuvsgul Lake' with staying in Khatgal

Murun is 90 minutes south of Khatgal by minivan and has nothing to do with the lake experience. Ider Guesthouse in Murun is a solid transit stop, but don't book it as your lake base. Khuvsgul Lake Hotel in Khatgal puts you 5 minutes walk from the water. The difference matters enormously.

Carry small denomination tugrik for guesthouses and local transport

Many guesthouses and all shared minivans operate cash-only. ATMs in Ulaanbaatar on Peace Avenue and Seoul Street are reliable, but outside the capital. especially in Khatgal, Olgii, and rural areas. ATMs are rare or unreliable. Leave Ulaanbaatar with enough tugrik for your entire regional trip. Budget roughly 50,000-100,000 MNT ($15-30) per day for local transport and meals outside hotel packages.

Check whether lodge prices include meals before comparing

Three Camel Lodge and Khuvsgul Lake Hotel both include meals in their rates. That changes the comparison completely. A lodge at $130/night all-in beats a camp at $70/night where you then pay $30-40/day for food with no alternatives for 100 km in any direction. Always ask before booking.

Ger camp heating is not guaranteed in shoulder season

June and September nights in Mongolia can drop to 2-5°C in the steppe and lower in the mountains. Budget ger camps often provide a wood stove and one bundle of firewood per night. which isn't always enough. Three Camel Lodge and Terelj Hotel have proper heating infrastructure. If you're visiting outside July-August, pay the extra and stay somewhere that won't have you shivering at 3 a.m.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in Mongolia

Straight answers from our team after reviewing hotels across Mongolia.

What's the best area to stay in Ulaanbaatar?

Stay in the City Center district, within 10 minutes walk of Sukhbaatar Square. You get access to Peace Avenue's restaurants, the State Department Store, and reliable taxi pickup without the 45-minute commute from the southern suburbs. Zaisan District is quieter but isolated. fine if you're at the Shangri-La, not worth it at mid-range prices.

How much does a hotel in Mongolia cost per night?

Budget guesthouses in Ulaanbaatar run $45-75/night. Mid-range city hotels and lakeside lodges sit at $100-160/night. Luxury properties like Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar or Terelj Hotel push $260-450/night. Ger camps in the Gobi often look affordable at first glance, but factor in the 580 km drive or domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad.

When is the best time to visit Mongolia?

June-August is peak season. Naadam Festival runs July 11-15 every year in Ulaanbaatar, and hotel prices jump 30-50% that week. Late May and September are genuinely better: fewer tourists, similar weather, and prices 20-30% lower. Avoid November-February unless you enjoy -30°C and finding out which lodges actually have heating.

Is it safe to stay in Ulaanbaatar?

Generally yes, but stay alert around the Narantuul Market area and the train station district, especially at night. The City Center around Sukhbaatar Square and Peace Avenue is well-lit and heavily trafficked. Petty theft spikes during Naadam week when crowds are dense.
