Why These Hotels Made Our List

Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.

Base Backpackers hotel interior
#1

Base Backpackers

Sommerschield, Maputo $45–75/night 7.6/10

A reliable budget option on Avenida Mao Tse Tung, close to the Polana shopping area. Dormitory beds and private rooms are basic but clean, with reliable wifi that holds up most of the day. The common kitchen and outdoor terrace are good places to meet other travelers. Staff are helpful with arranging local transport and day trips. Not fancy, but honest value for Maputo.

Check Availability
Fatima's Place hotel interior
#2

Fatima's Place

Tofo Beach, Tofo $55–90/night 8/10

Fatima's sits right in the heart of Tofo village, a short walk from the main beach and dive shops. Rooms are simple reed-and-thatch chalets with ceiling fans and mosquito nets. The outdoor restaurant serves good Portuguese-style grilled fish at fair prices. The atmosphere is relaxed and the owner knows the area well. It draws a loyal backpacker and diver crowd for good reason.

Check Availability
Hotel Tivoli Beira hotel interior
#3

Hotel Tivoli Beira

City Centre, Beira $100–155/night 7.8/10

The Tivoli is the most recognizable hotel on Beira's waterfront Marginal promenade, making orientation easy for first-time visitors. Rooms are comfortable and air-conditioned, with decent beds and working hot water showers. The hotel pool is a practical bonus in Beira's humid climate. Service can be slow during busy periods but the staff are generally friendly. A solid base for business travelers and those passing through to Gorongosa.

Check Availability
Pemba Beach Hotel hotel interior
#4

Pemba Beach Hotel

Wimbe Beach, Pemba $120–190/night 8.3/10

The Pemba Beach Hotel occupies a prime stretch of Wimbe Beach, one of the most accessible white-sand beaches in northern Mozambique. Rooms face either the garden or the Indian Ocean, and the ocean-view rooms are worth the modest upgrade. The beachfront restaurant has a menu that leans heavily on fresh seafood and cold Manica beer. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent directly at the hotel. It books up fast during South African school holidays so plan ahead.

Check Availability
Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari hotel interior
#5

Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari

Gorongosa National Park, Gorongosa $135–210/night 8.6/10

This is the main lodge inside Gorongosa National Park and it is one of the better safari experiences at this price point in East Africa. Chalets are spacious with private decks overlooking the floodplain where elephant and hippo are regular visitors. Game drives are organized efficiently by the lodge and the guides know the park well. The dining area is open-air and serves three meals a day with good quality. The park itself is one of Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories.

Check Availability
Complexo Turistico Sambesi hotel interior
#6

Complexo Turistico Sambesi

Riverside, Tete $110–165/night 7.9/10

Sambesi sits on the banks of the Zambezi River in Tete, which is one of the more dramatic hotel settings in inland Mozambique. Bungalow-style rooms are spacious and reasonably well maintained with river-facing verandas. The outdoor pool area is pleasant in the evenings after the day's heat breaks. Tete is not a major tourist hub but this property works well for those visiting the Cahora Bassa dam or transiting between Zimbabwe and Malawi. The restaurant sticks to simple grills and local dishes.

Check Availability
Casa Rex hotel interior
#7

Casa Rex

Town Centre, Inhambane $115–175/night 8.4/10

Casa Rex is a restored colonial building on Inhambane's main square, giving it one of the most atmospheric locations of any hotel in southern Mozambique. The rooms have high ceilings, wooden floors, and a quiet charm that many modern hotels cannot replicate. The courtyard garden is good for breakfast and evening drinks. Inhambane town itself is walkable and the dhow crossing to Maxixe is just minutes away. This is a genuinely characterful place to stay rather than a generic beach resort.

Check Availability
Azura Benguerra Island hotel interior
#8

Azura Benguerra Island

Bazaruto Archipelago, Benguerra Island $750–1 200/night 9.4/10

Azura on Benguerra Island sits inside the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, one of the last intact coral reef systems in the Indian Ocean. The villas are set directly on the beach with private plunge pools and dedicated butler service. Diving and snorkeling in the park are exceptional, with dugong, manta ray, and turtle sightings common. The food is outstanding for such a remote location, with fresh seafood flown in regularly. Access is by light aircraft from Vilanculos and the whole experience is among the finest in Africa.

Check Availability
Kisawa Sanctuary hotel interior
#9

Kisawa Sanctuary

Benguerra Island, Bazaruto $1 500–3 000/night 9.7/10

Kisawa Sanctuary on Benguerra Island is one of the most ambitious and expensive eco-resorts on the African continent. Each villa is built using local sand and shell aggregate in a round form, giving the property a completely unique architectural identity along a pristine stretch of coast. Guest numbers are kept very low and the level of personalized service reflects that. Conservation is a genuine part of the operation, with marine and terrestrial research programs guests can participate in. The price is significant but the experience is unlike anything else in Mozambique.

Check Availability
Hotel VIP Executive Maputo hotel interior
#10

Hotel VIP Executive Maputo

Polana, Maputo $145–200/night 8.1/10

Located on Avenida Julius Nyerere in the Polana district, this hotel caters primarily to business travelers visiting the capital. Rooms are modern, well-equipped with good desks and fast internet, and the beds are among the most comfortable in this price range in Maputo. The rooftop pool has a good view of the city skyline. The breakfast buffet is generous and includes local fruit alongside continental standards. A reliable and professional choice when work is the reason for the trip.

Where to Stay in Mozambique

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel. Here's what you need to know.

Maputo for first-timers: where to stay and what to skip

Maputo is more interesting than most people expect. The Polana and Sommerschield neighbourhoods are where you'll find the city's best restaurants, cafés, and street art, all within 20 minutes walk of each other along Avenida Kenneth Kaunda and Avenida Julius Nyerere. Stay here. Don't stay in the Baixa.

The Baixa waterfront near Praça dos Trabalhadores looks atmospheric in photos but has a persistent petty theft problem after 8pm. We've seen this mistake too many times. Budget travelers do well in Sommerschield. For business or comfort, Polana's hotels sit right beside the iconic Polana Serena Hotel landmark and are a 12-minute drive from Maputo International Airport via Avenida de Moçambique.

Tofo vs. Inhambane: picking the right base

Tofo Beach and Inhambane Town are 20 minutes apart by road, but they attract completely different travelers. Tofo is young, casual, dive-obsessed, and centred around the strip of guesthouses and bars near the beachfront road leading to Barra Beach. Inhambane Town has colonial Portuguese architecture, the famous dhow harbour on Avenida da Independência, and a slower pace.

If you're here to dive with whale sharks or manta rays, base yourself in Tofo. Diversity Scuba and Peri-Peri Divers both operate from the beach road and charge $60-95 per two-tank dive. If architecture, local food, and evening walks interest you more, Inhambane Town wins. Casa Rex bridges the gap nicely: it's in the Town Centre but runs a shuttle to Tofo Beach.

The Bazaruto Archipelago: what you're actually paying for

Azura Benguerra and Kisawa Sanctuary sit on Benguerra Island, 14 kilometres east of Vilankulo across the Mozambique Channel. You reach them by speedboat transfer, which takes about 45 minutes from Vilankulo harbour and is included in the rates. The island has no roads, no towns, and no noise except the Indian Ocean.

Kisawa at $1,500-3,000/night isn't absurd given what it delivers: private villas with direct beach access, fully inclusive dining, and snorkelling on reefs that see fewer than 500 tourists a year. Azura at $750-1,200/night is the more accessible entry point and still offers excellent house reef diving and dhow sunset cruises. These prices are per couple, fully inclusive. For a honeymoon or a once-in-a-decade trip, the Archipelago is genuinely hard to argue against.

Gorongosa National Park: why it's Africa's comeback story

Gorongosa was devastated during the civil war. What the Carr Foundation has done there since 2008 is remarkable: lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, and crocodile populations have rebounded dramatically. The park entrance is 3 hours north of Beira via the EN1 highway, turning onto the R103 at Inchope. It's accessible but not a quick add-on.

Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari sits inside the park buffer zone, 15 minutes drive from the Chitengo Camp visitors centre. The lodge runs guided morning game drives at 5:30am that catch lion activity near the Urema floodplain. At $135-210/night for what is essentially a full safari experience, this is the best pure value on our entire list.

Pemba and the far north: what to know before you go

Pemba is the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago and has one of the finest natural harbours in East Africa. Wimbe Beach, 4 kilometres from Pemba city centre via Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, is where most hotels cluster. The beach is good, the seafood is excellent, and the nightlife around the Pemba Beach Hotel strip is livelier than anywhere else on the northern coast.

Do not go north of Pemba toward Mocímboa da Praia. The Cabo Delgado conflict has made that region genuinely dangerous, and no hotel north of Wimbe Beach is on our list for that reason. Pemba itself is safe and worth 3-4 nights. A roundtrip domestic flight from Maputo costs $110-165 on LAM and saves a brutal two-day overland journey.

Beira and Tete: the overlooked inland stops

Beira is Mozambique's second city and sits at the mouth of the Pungwe River on the central coast. Most tourists skip it. That's a mistake if you're travelling between Gorongosa and the south, because the Hotel Tivoli Beira on Rua Major Serpa Pinto puts you 8 minutes walk from the Macuti Lighthouse and the famous Macuti Beach. The city has a raw, port-town energy that's entirely its own.

Tete is further inland on the Zambezi River and doesn't pretend to be a leisure destination. It's a transit and mining city. But if you're crossing into Zambia or Zimbabwe via the Zobue or Cassacatiza border posts, Complexo Turistico Sambesi on the Riverside strip makes a genuinely comfortable overnight stop. The Zambezi views from their terrace are real, and the food is better than you'd expect at $110-165/night.

Explore Mozambique by city

We cover 6 destinations across Mozambique. Pick a city for a dedicated hotel guide with neighborhoods, seasonal tips, and our vetted picks.

Mozambique's best hotel regions

The coast is the main event here, but not all of it is equal. Prioritize the Bazaruto Archipelago or the Tofo-Inhambane stretch if you're here for the ocean. Maputo earns its place for culture, food, and business.

Maputo 2 vetted hotels

The capital delivers culture, food, and business infrastructure that nowhere else in Mozambique can match.

Maputo sits in the far south, and most people treat it as a gateway rather than a destination. That's their loss. The Polana neighbourhood around Avenida Julius Nyerere has some of the best Portuguese-African fusion restaurants on the continent, a thriving art scene anchored by the Núcleo de Arte on Rua da Argélia, and a promenade along the Marginal that's perfectly pleasant in the dry season.

Sommerschield is the neighbourhood for budget and mid-range stays. It's residential, quiet, and 15 minutes walk from both Polana's restaurants and the Costa do Sol beachfront via Avenida Mao Tsé Tung. The Baixa grid around Praça dos Trabalhadores and the train station area are best avoided after dark. Stick to Polana and Sommerschield and you'll have a good time.

Hotel costs in Maputo split cleanly by neighbourhood. Sommerschield runs $45-75/night for well-run guesthouses. Polana business hotels land at $145-200/night and include airport transfer services and rooftop pools that the budget options can't match. Taxis from Maputo International Airport to Polana cost around 600-800 MZN and take 15-20 minutes in normal traffic.

Best areas Polana, Sommerschield
Price range $45-200/night
Best for Business travelers, city culture, transit hub
Avoid Baixa waterfront after dark. persistent petty theft near Praça dos Trabalhadores

Inhambane & Tofo 2 vetted hotels

The best diving in southern Africa and a colonial town that somehow nobody talks about enough.

The Inhambane province is a two-hour drive north of Maputo via the EN1 and the Maxixe ferry crossing, or a short domestic flight. Tofo Beach is the global pin on the map for whale shark diving, with sightings most reliable between June and November. The beachfront road through Tofo village has a relaxed, communal feel: dive shops, guesthouses, and seafood spots all within 5 minutes walk of each other.

Inhambane Town itself is 22 kilometres from Tofo and worth at least a half-day. The Portuguese colonial architecture along Avenida da Independência is genuinely beautiful, the dhow harbour at sunset is one of Mozambique's iconic images, and the local market near the central mosque offers fresh produce and local crafts at honest prices. Casa Rex is the standout hotel here, sitting right in the Town Centre.

Pricing in this region is straightforward. Tofo guesthouses run $55-90/night. Inhambane Town boutique hotels like Casa Rex go $115-175/night and include amenities that backpacker spots can't offer. During the whale shark high season in July-August, both fill up fast and rates creep 15-20% higher. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for those months.

Best areas Tofo Beach village, Inhambane Town Centre
Price range $55-175/night
Best for Divers, snorkelers, honeymooners, backpackers
Avoid Barra Beach lodges that advertise 'beachfront' but sit 1km back from the water
Best months June-November

Pemba & Northern Coast 1 vetted hotel

Mozambique's best beach infrastructure, with a world-class harbour and the Quirimbas just offshore.

Pemba is where the northern coast gets organized enough for comfortable travel. Wimbe Beach runs for 4 kilometres south of the city centre and has the best concentration of hotels, restaurants, and water sports operators in the north. The Pemba Beach Hotel anchors the southern end of Wimbe and is 10 minutes walk from Farol Beach, which is quieter and better for snorkelling.

The city centre, 4 kilometres from Wimbe via Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, has the best local restaurants and the daily market near the Mercado Central. Don't eat all your meals on the hotel strip. A taxi between the city centre and Wimbe runs 150-250 MZN and takes 10 minutes. The harbour area near the Dhow Bar is worth an evening.

Pemba is also the launch point for Quirimbas Archipelago day trips, with speedboat transfers to islands like Ibo costing $60-120 per person return. At $120-190/night, Pemba Beach Hotel gives you the infrastructure to explore the wider region without being stranded. And unlike most northern Mozambique options, it's reliably operational year-round.

Best areas Wimbe Beach, Farol Beach
Price range $120-190/night
Best for Beach holidays, Quirimbas day trips, families
Avoid Anything north of Pemba toward Mocímboa da Praia. active security concerns
Best months May-October

Bazaruto Archipelago 2 vetted hotels

The most pristine marine environment in the Indian Ocean south of the Seychelles. Full stop.

Benguerra Island is the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago and home to both Azura and Kisawa Sanctuary. You get there by speedboat from Vilankulo harbour, 45 minutes across shallow turquoise water where dugongs occasionally surface alongside the boat. There are no roads, no motorcycles, no sounds except wind and waves. It's the real thing.

Azura Benguerra at $750-1,200/night and Kisawa at $1,500-3,000/night are fully inclusive resorts. Meals, drinks, and most activities are covered in the rate. That matters because there's nowhere else to eat or drink on the island. The house reefs at both properties have seen minimal fishing pressure for over 20 years and show it: coral coverage and fish biomass that most Indian Ocean dive sites can't approach.

Vilankulo on the mainland is the practical gateway. The town has a handful of mid-range guesthouses in the $80-130/night range if you need a night before your island transfer. Fly into Vilankulo Airport from Maputo on LAM or charter, or drive the 700-kilometre journey up the EN1, which takes 8-9 hours. Most guests fly.

Best areas Benguerra Island, Vilankulo (mainland base)
Price range $750-3,000/night
Best for Luxury honeymoons, serious divers, complete disconnection
Avoid The budget lodges on Santa Carolina Island, which have poor reef access
Best months April-November

Gorongosa & Central Mozambique 1 vetted hotel

Africa's great wildlife comeback story, with safari prices that still feel like 2015.

Gorongosa National Park sits in Sofala province, 200 kilometres north of Beira via the EN1. The park covers 4,000 square kilometres of miombo woodland, floodplain, and montane forest on Mount Gorongosa. Wildlife recovery has been extraordinary: lion prides now regularly patrol the Urema floodplain, and elephant numbers have grown from a few dozen in 2008 to over 700 today.

Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari is the only accommodation we recommend inside the park buffer zone. It's 15 minutes drive from Chitengo Camp, the park's main facilities and museum, which itself has an excellent visitor centre explaining the conservation story. Morning drives starting at 5:30am are when the cats are active near the lake margins.

Beira is the regional hub, 3 hours south on reasonable tarmac. Hotel Tivoli Beira makes a solid base if you're combining Gorongosa with the coast. Beira's Macuti Beach is free and good for a swim. The city took devastating hits from cyclones in 2019 and has rebuilt considerably since then.

Best areas Gorongosa Park buffer zone, Chitengo area
Price range $100-210/night
Best for Safari, wildlife photography, nature lovers
Avoid Unvetted bush camps near the park boundaries that operate without park authority permits
Best months June-October

Tete & Zambezi Valley 1 vetted hotel

Not glamorous, but honest. A riverfront city that works hard and rewards travelers passing through.

Tete sits on the Zambezi River in the hot interior, 600 kilometres northwest of Beira. It's a mining and transit city: Cahora Bassa Dam, 150 kilometres upstream, is one of Africa's largest hydro projects and worth a half-day visit. The city's grid is compact, and the Riverside strip along the Zambezi is where you'll find the best restaurants and the breeze that makes Tete's 35-40°C summer heat bearable.

Complexo Turistico Sambesi occupies a prime Riverside position and is the go-to for anyone crossing to Zambia via the Zobue border post, 180 kilometres to the northwest. The border crossing at Zobue opens at 6am and closes at 10pm. Tete Bridge across the Zambezi is the main crossing point within the city and a 5-minute drive from the lodge.

Don't expect beach-resort amenities. Tete is a working city and Complexo Sambesi delivers solid mid-range comfort at $110-165/night, not luxury. But the Zambezi views are genuine, the food is better than the price suggests, and the pool is essential in summer. It's exactly what it needs to be.

Best areas Riverside strip, Tete Bridge area
Price range $110-165/night
Best for Transit travelers, Cahora Bassa visitors, overlanders
Avoid The town centre hotel strip on Avenida 25 de Setembro. overpriced for what you get
Best months May-August

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Mozambique.

Romantic

Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago is the obvious answer: no cars, no crowds, just private villas and a house reef that glows at low tide. Casa Rex in Inhambane Town Centre works beautifully for a more grounded romance at a fraction of the price.

Culture & History

Maputo's Polana neighbourhood packs museums, colonial architecture, and galleries into a walkable 2-kilometre stretch along Avenida Julius Nyerere. The Núcleo de Arte on Rua da Argélia and the Natural History Museum are both worth 2 hours each.

Family

Wimbe Beach in Pemba has calm, shallow water that's genuinely safe for kids, with the beach gradual enough for all ages. The Pemba Beach Hotel has the pool and the facilities that make family logistics manageable without sacrificing a great location.

Budget

Tofo Beach's backpacker strip gives you world-class diving access at guesthouse prices, with Fatima's Place 3 minutes from the dive operators. Base Backpackers in Maputo's Sommerschield lets you do the capital properly for $45/night.

Beach

Benguerra Island has the best beaches in the country, but Tofo Beach near Inhambane is where the action is, with whale shark dives, surf, and a sunset bar scene centred around the main beachfront road. Hard to beat June-October.

Foodie

Maputo's Polana district is Mozambique's food capital, with piri-piri prawns on Avenida Marginal and Portuguese-Mozambican fusion at restaurants along Avenida Julius Nyerere that rival anything in Lisbon. Get to Costa do Sol restaurant before 7pm or queue.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed 2,000+ options across the main regions of Mozambique. We cut anything with misleading beachfront photos where the actual beach was a 20-minute drive away. We cut overpriced lodges banking on national park proximity but delivering nothing special. Anything with unresolved safety issues near the EN1 highway corridor didn't make it either. What's left are 10 hotels that actually deliver on what they promise.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

When to Visit Mozambique: Season by Season

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary dramatically. Here's what to expect each season.

Budget Friendly

Wet Season (Nov-Mar)

Avg hotel: $50-120/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 28-35°C

The rains arrive from November and peak January-February, with Mozambique's central and northern coast cyclone-exposed. Beira and the Sofala coast have been hit hard in recent years and January-February travel carries real weather risk. Prices drop significantly: Pemba Beach Hotel runs $120-140/night versus $180+ in peak. Only go if your dates are flexible and your flights refundable.

Warming Up

Warming Up (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $75-160/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 26-33°C

October is hot and dry, November starts to feel heavy. Whale shark season at Tofo is winding down by November but manta ray season picks up. The Bazaruto Archipelago is still excellent in October with near-perfect visibility. Rates at Azura Benguerra ease slightly from the August peak, making October a reasonable entry point at $750-900/night.

How to Book Hotels in Mozambique

Smart booking strategies that save money without sacrificing quality.

Book Tofo during whale shark season 6 weeks out minimum

July and August are when the whale sharks concentrate at Manta Reef, 15-20 minutes offshore from Tofo Beach. Every diver in southern Africa knows this. The handful of good guesthouses along the Tofo beachfront road fill up fast and don't hold rooms for long. Fatima's Place and similar spots sell out 4-6 weeks ahead for these two months specifically. January bookings for July are not too early.

The Bazaruto ferry vs. charter flight: do the maths first

Vilankulo Airport receives scheduled flights from Maputo on LAM at $110-155 one way. A charter to Vilankulo from Maputo runs $400-600 but saves 8 hours of driving on the EN1. Once at Vilankulo, the speedboat transfer to Benguerra Island is 45 minutes and costs $120-160 per person return, usually included in island resort rates. Factor all of this before you commit to a Bazaruto booking.

Don't trust 'beachfront' listings around Barra and Xai-Xai

We've seen this consistently: lodges near Barra Beach and Xai-Xai advertising beachfront access that's actually a 20-minute drive down a sand track. The photos are always taken at the beach, not from the property. Ask specifically: 'Is the beach walkable in under 5 minutes?' If they hesitate, it isn't. Tofo and Wimbe Beach have genuine walking access. Many Barra properties do not.

Malaria prevention is not optional anywhere in Mozambique

The whole country is malaria-endemic, including Maputo city. Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) is the most commonly used prophylaxis and costs $80-120 for a two-week supply. Start it 2 days before arrival. Every hotel on our list is in a malaria zone. Mosquito nets are provided at most mid-range and budget properties, but bring your own DEET repellent regardless.

ATMs get scarce fast north of Beira. carry USD

Maputo has reliable ATMs along Avenida 24 de Julho and around Shopping Vodacom. Beira has a few functional machines near the city centre. North of Beira, ATM reliability drops sharply. In Pemba, the BCI branch on Avenida Eduardo Mondlane is your best bet. On the islands, there are no ATMs at all. Carry enough USD for your entire northern or archipelago trip.

Avoid driving the EN1 at night between Inchope and Beira

The EN1 highway between Inchope junction and Beira has a poor record for road accidents after dark, with livestock on the road and limited lighting. If you're driving from Gorongosa to Beira, leave the park by 3pm to arrive before dark. Between Maputo and Inhambane, the road is better maintained but the same advice applies south of Xai-Xai. Drive daylight only.

Polana and Sommerschield are where you want to be. Both are within 15 minutes walk of the Avenida Julius Nyerere restaurant strip and feel noticeably safer after dark than the Baixa waterfront area. Budget stays in Sommerschield run $45-75/night. Polana business hotels push $145-200/night but include amenities that justify the gap.

When is the best time to visit Mozambique?

June through September is the dry season and the clear winner for beach travel. Temperatures sit at 20-25°C along the coast, visibility underwater hits 30+ metres near Tofo, and hotel rates are at their most stable. Avoid January and February entirely if you can: cyclone season is real, and Beira took a direct hit from Cyclone Idai that should tell you everything.

Is Mozambique safe for tourists?

Most tourist areas are fine with basic precautions. Maputo's Baixa district around Praça dos Trabalhadores sees regular petty theft, especially after dark. Cabo Delgado province in the north, beyond Pemba city, has active security concerns and the Foreign Office travel warnings there are not exaggerated. Stick to established tourist corridors and you'll be fine.

How much does a hotel in Mozambique cost per night?

Budget guesthouses in Maputo and Tofo run $45-90/night. Mid-range beach hotels in Pemba or Inhambane land at $110-190/night. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a different universe: Azura Benguerra starts at $750/night and Kisawa Sanctuary runs $1,500-3,000/night, which is per person on a fully inclusive basis.

Do I need a visa to visit Mozambique?

Citizens of most countries need a visa, but many nationalities can get one on arrival at Maputo International Airport for around $50-85 depending on nationality. South Africans, Tanzanians, and Zambians are among those who enter visa-free. Always verify with the Mozambican embassy in your country before you fly, since this list changes.

What currency is used in Mozambique?

The Mozambican metical (MZN) is the official currency. In practice, USD is widely accepted at hotels, dive operators, and lodges along the tourist trail. You'll need meticals for local restaurants, markets, and chapas (minibuses). ATMs are reliable in Maputo along Avenida 24 de Julho but get genuinely scarce north of Beira.

What's the best beach destination in Mozambique?

Tofo Beach near Inhambane is the backpacker and diver favourite, with whale sharks present June-November just 20 minutes offshore. Pemba's Wimbe Beach is more developed and suits families better. For full luxury, the Bazaruto Archipelago is incomparable. Nothing in southern Africa compares to the water clarity around Benguerra Island.

How do I get around Mozambique?

LAM (Mozambique Airlines) flies Maputo to Pemba, Beira, and Quelimane, with tickets running $80-180 one way when booked in advance. The EN1 highway connects Maputo to Beira by road but expect 10-12 hours and variable road quality north of Save. Chapas are cheap and ubiquitous in every city, but for anything beyond short city hops, domestic flights save your sanity.

Is Mozambique good for a honeymoon?

Yes, and it seriously punches above its weight for romance. The Bazaruto Archipelago offers privacy that Maldives resorts can't match at similar prices. Casa Rex in Inhambane's Town Centre is a strong mid-range honeymoon option at $115-175/night with colonial-era architecture and candlelit dinners 5 minutes from the dhow harbour. Book Azura or Kisawa if budget isn't an issue.

What language is spoken in Mozambique?

Portuguese is the official language. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken at hotels, dive shops, and restaurants, especially in Tofo, Vilankulo, and Pemba. Outside those zones, basic Portuguese goes a long way. French is almost useless here, despite what some travel blogs suggest.

What should I pack for Mozambique?

Malaria prophylaxis is non-negotiable: the whole country is malaria-endemic, including Maputo. Pack reef-safe sunscreen because Pemba and Tofo dive operators will turn you away otherwise, and Wimbe Beach has enforcement. A light rain layer matters May-June in transitional season, when overnight temperatures in Maputo dip to 14-16°C.

Are there good budget hotels in Mozambique?

Base Backpackers in Maputo's Sommerschield neighbourhood is the best-run budget option in the capital, starting at $45/night and within 10 minutes walk of the Jardim dos Professores. Fatima's Place in Tofo sits at $55-90/night and is 3 minutes on foot from the main dive operators on the beachfront road. Both are well-managed and genuinely safe.
