The best hotels in Mozambique

Maputo sits in the far south, and most people treat it as a gateway rather than a destination. That's their loss. The Polana neighbourhood around Avenida Julius Nyerere has some of the best Portuguese-African fusion restaurants on the continent, a thriving art scene anchored by the Núcleo de Arte on Rua da Argélia, and a promenade along the Marginal that's perfectly pleasant in the dry season.

Sommerschield is the neighbourhood for budget and mid-range stays. It's residential, quiet, and 15 minutes walk from both Polana's restaurants and the Costa do Sol beachfront via Avenida Mao Tsé Tung. The Baixa grid around Praça dos Trabalhadores and the train station area are best avoided after dark. Stick to Polana and Sommerschield and you'll have a good time.

Hotel costs in Maputo split cleanly by neighbourhood. Sommerschield runs $45-75/night for well-run guesthouses. Polana business hotels land at $145-200/night and include airport transfer services and rooftop pools that the budget options can't match. Taxis from Maputo International Airport to Polana cost around 600-800 MZN and take 15-20 minutes in normal traffic.

The Inhambane province is a two-hour drive north of Maputo via the EN1 and the Maxixe ferry crossing, or a short domestic flight. Tofo Beach is the global pin on the map for whale shark diving, with sightings most reliable between June and November. The beachfront road through Tofo village has a relaxed, communal feel: dive shops, guesthouses, and seafood spots all within 5 minutes walk of each other.

Inhambane Town itself is 22 kilometres from Tofo and worth at least a half-day. The Portuguese colonial architecture along Avenida da Independência is genuinely beautiful, the dhow harbour at sunset is one of Mozambique's iconic images, and the local market near the central mosque offers fresh produce and local crafts at honest prices. Casa Rex is the standout hotel here, sitting right in the Town Centre.

Pricing in this region is straightforward. Tofo guesthouses run $55-90/night. Inhambane Town boutique hotels like Casa Rex go $115-175/night and include amenities that backpacker spots can't offer. During the whale shark high season in July-August, both fill up fast and rates creep 15-20% higher. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for those months.

Pemba is where the northern coast gets organized enough for comfortable travel. Wimbe Beach runs for 4 kilometres south of the city centre and has the best concentration of hotels, restaurants, and water sports operators in the north. The Pemba Beach Hotel anchors the southern end of Wimbe and is 10 minutes walk from Farol Beach, which is quieter and better for snorkelling.

The city centre, 4 kilometres from Wimbe via Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, has the best local restaurants and the daily market near the Mercado Central. Don't eat all your meals on the hotel strip. A taxi between the city centre and Wimbe runs 150-250 MZN and takes 10 minutes. The harbour area near the Dhow Bar is worth an evening.

Pemba is also the launch point for Quirimbas Archipelago day trips, with speedboat transfers to islands like Ibo costing $60-120 per person return. At $120-190/night, Pemba Beach Hotel gives you the infrastructure to explore the wider region without being stranded. And unlike most northern Mozambique options, it's reliably operational year-round.

Benguerra Island is the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago and home to both Azura and Kisawa Sanctuary. You get there by speedboat from Vilankulo harbour, 45 minutes across shallow turquoise water where dugongs occasionally surface alongside the boat. There are no roads, no motorcycles, no sounds except wind and waves. It's the real thing.

Azura Benguerra at $750-1,200/night and Kisawa at $1,500-3,000/night are fully inclusive resorts. Meals, drinks, and most activities are covered in the rate. That matters because there's nowhere else to eat or drink on the island. The house reefs at both properties have seen minimal fishing pressure for over 20 years and show it: coral coverage and fish biomass that most Indian Ocean dive sites can't approach.

Vilankulo on the mainland is the practical gateway. The town has a handful of mid-range guesthouses in the $80-130/night range if you need a night before your island transfer. Fly into Vilankulo Airport from Maputo on LAM or charter, or drive the 700-kilometre journey up the EN1, which takes 8-9 hours. Most guests fly.

Gorongosa National Park sits in Sofala province, 200 kilometres north of Beira via the EN1. The park covers 4,000 square kilometres of miombo woodland, floodplain, and montane forest on Mount Gorongosa. Wildlife recovery has been extraordinary: lion prides now regularly patrol the Urema floodplain, and elephant numbers have grown from a few dozen in 2008 to over 700 today.

Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and Safari is the only accommodation we recommend inside the park buffer zone. It's 15 minutes drive from Chitengo Camp, the park's main facilities and museum, which itself has an excellent visitor centre explaining the conservation story. Morning drives starting at 5:30am are when the cats are active near the lake margins.

Beira is the regional hub, 3 hours south on reasonable tarmac. Hotel Tivoli Beira makes a solid base if you're combining Gorongosa with the coast. Beira's Macuti Beach is free and good for a swim. The city took devastating hits from cyclones in 2019 and has rebuilt considerably since then.

Tete sits on the Zambezi River in the hot interior, 600 kilometres northwest of Beira. It's a mining and transit city: Cahora Bassa Dam, 150 kilometres upstream, is one of Africa's largest hydro projects and worth a half-day visit. The city's grid is compact, and the Riverside strip along the Zambezi is where you'll find the best restaurants and the breeze that makes Tete's 35-40°C summer heat bearable.

Complexo Turistico Sambesi occupies a prime Riverside position and is the go-to for anyone crossing to Zambia via the Zobue border post, 180 kilometres to the northwest. The border crossing at Zobue opens at 6am and closes at 10pm. Tete Bridge across the Zambezi is the main crossing point within the city and a 5-minute drive from the lodge.

Don't expect beach-resort amenities. Tete is a working city and Complexo Sambesi delivers solid mid-range comfort at $110-165/night, not luxury. But the Zambezi views are genuine, the food is better than the price suggests, and the pool is essential in summer. It's exactly what it needs to be.
