Where to Stay in Zakopane

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Skiing and Snowboarding in the Tatras

Nosal is the main beginner and intermediate area, 2km from the center. Polana Szymoszkowa, 4km out, has more varied terrain and better snow retention. Day ski passes cost 130 to 180 PLN at both areas. Equipment rental at the mountain is 80 to 110 PLN/day. Buy passes at tandr.pl in advance to skip the queue.

Kasprowy Wierch is the advanced option. At 1,987m, it stays skiable until April. Two cable cars (40-minute journey) bring you to the summit. The runs here are more challenging than Nosal. Buy cable car tickets online at tandr.pl, especially on weekends when the 2-hour queue is standard.

Hiking the Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park entry costs 6 PLN per person per day (on weekdays). The park entrance is at the southern edge of Zakopane. The most popular trail is the Morskie Oko hike, 9km from Palenica Bialczanska. The Chochołowska Valley trail is 10km of meadows and less crowded than Morskie Oko.

For serious hikers, the Orla Perc ridge route (Black Eagle Pass) is a 1-day technical scramble between Zawrat and Krzyznie requiring good footwear and weather awareness. Do not attempt it in bad weather. The route takes 6 to 8 hours and requires no permits but needs experience on rocky terrain.

Krupowki Promenade: The Zakopane Spine

Krupowki is the 600-meter pedestrian street running through Zakopane's center. It is the main shopping, eating, and people-watching hub. The wooden Highlander architecture (styl zakopianski) of the buildings is distinctive. On weekends in winter, Krupowki can be extremely crowded.

Ski and snowboard rental shops line the lower part of Krupowki. Equipment costs 80 to 110 PLN/day. The shops compete for business and prices are negotiable if you rent for 3 or more days. The restaurants on Krupowki itself are tourist-oriented; better meals are on Koscieliska Street, one block east.

The Highlander (Goralski) Culture

The Podhale region around Zakopane has a strong Highlander culture. The Tatra Museum (Muzeum Tatrzanskie) on Krupowki has excellent exhibits on goral traditions, textiles, and architecture. Entry costs 15 PLN. The wooden Villa Koliba on Koscieliska Street (designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz in 1892) is the founding example of Zakopane style architecture.

Oscypek cheese is the most tangible expression of goral culture you can eat. Made from sheep milk, smoked over fir wood for 2 weeks. Genuine oscypek has a spindle shape and the EU Protected Designation of Origin stamp. Highlander women on Krupowki sell the real thing from 8 to 15 PLN.

Gubalowka: Quick Views, No Hiking Needed

Gubalowka Hill (1,123m) is a 5-minute funicular ride from Zakopane center for 25 PLN each way. The summit has panoramic views over the town and towards the higher Tatra peaks. There are restaurants, souvenir stalls, and a toboggan run. It is the easiest mountain experience in Zakopane.

The funicular runs from 8am to 10pm in summer, 9am to 5pm in winter. The ridge walk west from Gubalowka through the meadows is 4km to Butorowy Wierch with no technical difficulty. The views back towards the High Tatras are excellent on clear days.

Day Trip: Dunajec River Gorge

The Dunajec River Gorge, 30km west of Zakopane, is one of Poland's most dramatic landscapes. Raft trips (wooden raft, 2-person minimum) down the 18km gorge take 2 to 3 hours. Boats depart from Sromowce Katy between April and October. Cost: 65 PLN per person.

The gorge forms the border between Poland and Slovakia. Pieniny National Park entry is included in the raft fee. Arrange transport from Zakopane via any tour operator on Krupowki for 30 to 50 PLN. The trip makes a good day out when weather prevents mountain hiking.

Zakopane's best neighborhoods

Zakopane is compact and mostly walkable. The main pedestrian promenade (Krupowki) runs through the center with restaurants, shops, and ski rental. The Bystre neighborhood is quieter and 10 minutes from the center. The Polana Szymoszkowa and Nosal slopes are the main ski areas on the north side of town.

Centrum (Krupowki area) 5 vetted hotels

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Morskie Oko is Poland's most visited hiking trail. On summer weekends, the 9km path can have 1,000+ people by 10am. Start from Palenica Bialczanska parking at 7am. The lake is most beautiful in early morning light anyway. Return downhill before noon.

Ski jump World Cup weekend: book 4 months ahead

Oscypek: buy from the source, not shops

Genuine smoked oscypek is sold by goral women on Krupowki promenade. The EU-protected version has a spindle shape. Supermarket versions are cheaper imitations. Buy from a highlander vendor for 8 to 15 PLN. Ask to smell it before buying.

Avoid driving in Zakopane on peak weekends

Hotels in Zakopane — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Zakopane.

What is the best area to stay in Zakopane?

Near Krupowki promenade for first-timers. It puts you within 10 minutes walk of ski rental, restaurants, and trail starts. Hotel Bania Thermal & Ski on Bystre is the top address for ski access and spa facilities. Bystre is 10 minutes walk from Krupowki and much quieter.

When is ski season in Zakopane?

December to March is the reliable ski window. The best snow is January and February. Nosal and Polana Szymoszkowa slopes open when the snowpack reaches 30cm, usually mid-December. Kasprowy Wierch at 1,987m stays skiable until April. Weekend lift queues can be 45 minutes in January and February.

How do I get to Zakopane from Krakow?

PKS buses from Krakow Glowny (main bus station) run hourly to Zakopane, 1.5 to 2 hours, 20 to 25 PLN. Shared minivan taxis (busy bus stop outside Krakow Galeria Krakowska) take 1.5 hours for 30 PLN. Trains exist but take 2.5 hours with a change at Chabowka and are not recommended.

Yes. The Tatra National Park trails are spectacular from June to September. Morskie Oko lake is a 9km hike from the Palenica Bialczanska car park. Kasprowy Wierch cable car (45 PLN) gives 2,000m views. Summer is less crowded than winter weekends and temperatures are pleasant (15 to 22°C).

What is Morskie Oko and how do I get there?

Morskie Oko (Sea Eye) is the most famous lake in the Polish Tatras, at 1,395m altitude. Drive or bus 20km east from Zakopane to Palenica Bialczanska parking (20 PLN).
