Why These Hotels Made Our List
Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.
Sahary AlUla Resort
This small guesthouse sits right at the edge of the AlUla Old Town, walking distance from the historic mud-brick ruins. Rooms are basic but clean, with air conditioning that handles the desert heat well. Staff are friendly and genuinely helpful with arranging Hegra site visits. Do not expect luxury amenities but the price is hard to beat for this location.
Check Availability
AlUla Moon Resort
A modest property tucked into the palm-lined AlUla Valley about two kilometers from the old city center. Rooms are simple but the mountain and rock formation views from the windows make up for the dated furnishings. The communal terrace is a great spot for stargazing given how dark the skies get out here. Breakfast is included and surprisingly generous for the price.
Check Availability
Shaden Resort AlUla
Shaden Resort is a well-run mid-range property set among date palms and sandstone cliffs in the main AlUla Valley. The bungalow-style rooms are spacious and decorated with local touches that feel authentic rather than gimmicky. The pool area is clean and gets afternoon shade from the surrounding rock formations. It is close to Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, which makes morning visits easy before the tour groups arrive.
Check Availability
Habitas AlUla
Habitas sits in the dramatic Ashar Valley, surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs that glow orange at sunset. The tent-style rooms are genuinely comfortable, with proper beds, hot showers, and enough insulation for cool desert nights. The communal dining area serves excellent food and becomes a social hub in the evenings. This is the property that most visitors picture when they think of a desert glamping experience done right.
Check Availability
Rasasi Boutique Hotel AlUla
Located in the newer part of AlUla town along the main commercial strip, Rasasi is a solid mid-range option for travelers who want easy access to restaurants and shops. Rooms are modern and well-maintained, with some offering views toward the escarpment. The hotel arranges transport to Hegra and other sites, which saves a lot of planning time. It feels more like a business hotel than a desert retreat, but the value for the standard is good.
Check Availability
Golden Sands Hotel AlUla
Golden Sands sits along the main Hijaz Road corridor about five minutes by car from the AlUla town center. The rooms are larger than average, making this a practical choice for families traveling with children. There is a decent-sized pool and a playground area that keeps younger guests occupied. The on-site restaurant is unremarkable but convenient, and the staff speak enough English to handle most requests.
Check Availability
Tayba Hotel AlUla
Tayba is a small boutique property positioned near the AlUla Heritage District, with views directly toward the illuminated old city walls at night. The rooms are styled with local stone and hand-woven textiles that give the place real character. Couples in particular seem to love the private terrace rooms, which face the canyon formations to the east. Service is attentive without being intrusive and the breakfast spread includes local honey and fresh dates every morning.
Check Availability
AlUla Horizons Hotel
This newer property sits closer to the Gharameel rock formations in the northern reaches of the AlUla region, away from the main tourist cluster. The drive to Hegra takes about 25 minutes but the relative isolation means genuine quiet and dark skies at night. Rooms are well-appointed with modern bathrooms and large windows framing the lunar landscape outside. The small restaurant focuses on Saudi regional dishes and the quality is noticeably better than at comparable properties.
Check Availability
Banyan Tree AlUla
Banyan Tree AlUla occupies a spectacular position in the Ashar Valley, with private pool villas carved into the sandstone landscape. Each villa is genuinely private, with its own plunge pool, outdoor shower, and direct views of the canyon walls. The spa uses locally sourced volcanic stone and desert botanicals in its treatments, which feels fitting for the setting. This is one of the most carefully designed luxury properties in Saudi Arabia and the service standard matches the price.
Check Availability
Aman Al Jabal
Aman Al Jabal is built into the dramatic cliffs near Jabal AlFil, the famous Elephant Rock formation, and the setting is unlike anything else in the region. Suites are vast, with local stone floors, handcrafted furniture, and terraces that hang over the canyon below. The Aman team organizes private access to Hegra at dawn before other tourists arrive, which alone justifies a significant part of the cost. Food and beverage across all the venues is exceptional and the wine program is strong for this part of Saudi Arabia.
Check AvailabilityWhere to Stay in AlUla
The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
First time in AlUla? Read this before you book.
The biggest mistake we see: booking a cheap hotel near Hijaz Road and assuming you're 'central.' You're not. Hegra is 22km north, Gharameel is 15km northwest, and without a car you'll be paying for taxis every single day. Pick a base in Ashar Valley or AlUla Heritage District and save yourself the hassle.
AlUla isn't a city you wander. It's a destination you plan. Most major sites, Hegra, Dadan, the Incense Road viewpoints, require timed-entry permits booked through the Experience AlUla platform. Don't show up expecting to wing it, especially during Winter at Tantora (December-March) when everything sells out 2-3 weeks ahead.
AlUla on a budget: what's actually possible.
Staying under $100/night in AlUla is doable. Sahary AlUla Resort in Old Town runs $55-85/night and puts you inside the historic mud-brick quarter, literally walking distance from the old souq and the ancient city ruins. AlUla Moon Resort in AlUla Valley is slightly more at $75-110/night but closer to the main archaeological corridor.
The real budget leak isn't the hotel. It's transport. Budget for 200-300 SAR per day in car hire or taxis if you're serious about seeing Hegra, Gharameel, and Maraya in one trip. Pack your own water and snacks too. Options near the sites are limited and overpriced.
Luxury in AlUla: when the price is worth it.
Aman Al Jabal near Jabal AlFil doesn't look like anywhere else on earth. The suites are carved into sandstone ridgelines, and at $420-750/night, you're paying for a specific kind of silence that budget properties simply can't replicate. Banyan Tree AlUla in Ashar Valley gives a similar desert luxury experience from $280/night and is slightly more accessible for couples who want spa facilities alongside the scenery.
Both properties include guided site access, private transport to Hegra, and staff who actually know the archaeology. That matters. We've seen people spend the same money on a weak mid-range room and a stack of taxis and come away with a worse trip overall.
AlUla in peak season: what to expect.
Winter at Tantora runs December through March and this is when AlUla gets genuinely busy. Maraya Concert Hall hosts major international acts, Hegra entry slots sell out weeks ahead, and hotel prices across Ashar Valley and the Heritage District spike 40-60% above off-season rates. Banyan Tree AlUla can hit $450/night during festival weekends.
Book hotels at least 6-8 weeks out for December and January travel. If you're targeting a specific concert at Maraya, confirm your hotel first, then buy the ticket. We've seen people do it the other way around and end up commuting 90 minutes from Tabuk because AlUla was full.
AlUla neighborhoods: a straight comparison.
Ashar Valley is the most photogenic and most resort-heavy area. Habitas AlUla and Banyan Tree both sit here. It's 12-15 minutes by car from the main Hegra entrance and surrounded by the signature red rock formations. AlUla Heritage District is denser, more historic, and better for people who want to walk to the Old Town and Dadan site without driving.
New Downtown near Rasasi Boutique Hotel is the most practical base but the least atmospheric. Gharameel Area is spectacular scenery but genuinely isolated. Good for one or two nights at AlUla Horizons Hotel if you want solitude. Don't base your whole trip there unless you have your own 4WD and confidence on unpaved tracks.
What to avoid when booking in AlUla.
Skip any hotel that uses the word 'views' without specifying what you're looking at. Rock formations in AlUla vary enormously in quality. Some resorts near Hijaz Road show photos of Gharameel in their listings despite being 20km away. Always check the Google Maps pin against the hotel address before booking.
Resort fees are common here and not always disclosed upfront. Three properties we reviewed charged a daily 'heritage experience fee' of 75-120 SAR on top of the room rate. Read the small print on Booking.com or the hotel's own site. And avoid booking the cheapest Old Town options during July and August as the lack of effective air conditioning at that price point is a real problem at 42°C.
AlUla's best neighborhoods
Ashar Valley is where you want to be if budget isn't your first filter. But if you're watching spend, AlUla Valley gives you the best mix of access and price.
Ashar Valley 2 vetted hotels The luxury canyon. Best scenery, best resorts, worth the price.
The luxury canyon. Best scenery, best resorts, worth the price.
Ashar Valley is where the serious money goes in AlUla, and honestly it earns it. The valley cuts between towering sandstone ridges, and both Habitas AlUla and Banyan Tree AlUla sit directly inside it. You're 12 minutes by car from the Hegra UNESCO entrance and about 8 minutes from Maraya Concert Hall.
Habitas AlUla at $150-230/night is the accessible entry point here, rated 8.8 and consistently praised for its communal spaces and guided nature programmes. Banyan Tree AlUla from $280-450/night is the full luxury tier with private pool villas and direct cliff-face positioning that no other property in AlUla comes close to matching.
Don't expect to walk anywhere. The valley isn't set up for pedestrians between sites. You'll need a car or use the resort shuttle. But if you're staying at either of these properties, that's built into the experience.
AlUla Heritage District & Old Town 2 vetted hotels History underfoot. Best for culture-first travellers.
History underfoot. Best for culture-first travellers.
This is the original AlUla. The mud-brick Old Town sits abandoned but preserved, and walking its narrow lanes at sunrise before the day-trippers arrive is genuinely special. Tayba Hotel AlUla in the Heritage District at $195-250/night is the romance pick, positioned close enough to the ancient city walls that you can hear the call to prayer echo off them.
Sahary AlUla Resort in Old Town is the budget end at $55-85/night, rated 7.2. It's fine. Rooms are basic, service is inconsistent, but the location inside the historic quarter is hard to beat at that price. You're 5 minutes walk from the old souq and 20 minutes by car to Dadan.
The Heritage District has improved dramatically since 2022. The main pedestrian strip near Souq Al Nakheel now has decent coffee, local crafts, and evening light projections on the rock faces during festival season. It's not just for history buffs anymore.
AlUla Valley & New Downtown 3 vetted hotels The practical middle. Good access, genuine value, real mix of options.
The practical middle. Good access, genuine value, real mix of options.
AlUla Valley runs roughly parallel to the Heritage District and holds the bulk of the mid-range options. AlUla Moon Resort and Shaden Resort AlUla both sit here. Shaden at $120-180/night with an 8.3 rating is the clear value winner, offering resort-level facilities at prices that make the Ashar Valley luxury tier look absurd by comparison.
Rasasi Boutique Hotel in New Downtown at $160-210/night is the most connected base. You're close to the main taxi rank, central pharmacy, and the best local restaurants. If you're here for more than 3 days and mixing archaeology with downtime, New Downtown makes logistics significantly easier.
The valley corridor itself is pleasant. Date palm farms line the road between AlUla Valley and the Old Town, and the 10-minute drive at golden hour is one of those AlUla moments that doesn't make it onto many Instagram feeds.
Gharameel Area & Hijaz Road Corridor 2 vetted hotels Dramatic scenery, real isolation. Go knowing what you're signing up for.
Dramatic scenery, real isolation. Go knowing what you're signing up for.
Gharameel's rock formations are legitimately surreal. Mushroom-shaped sandstone pillars, natural arches, and billion-year-old geology that makes you feel genuinely small. AlUla Horizons Hotel at $210-270/night with an 8.2 rating sits closest to this area and markets itself hard on that proximity. It's worth it for 1-2 nights.
Golden Sands Hotel AlUla on Hijaz Road Corridor at $175-220/night is the family-friendly pick. Rooms are generous, there's actual outdoor space for kids, and the road corridor gives you good access to both Hegra to the north and AlUla Valley to the south. Rated 7.9, which is honest given the slightly bland surroundings.
The key warning here is isolation. Neither area has a walkable food scene. You're relying on hotel dining or driving 20-30 minutes into AlUla New Downtown. Build that into your planning and it's fine. Get caught without a plan and you're eating overpriced resort buffet every night.
Best Areas by Vibe

Romantic
Tayba Hotel AlUla in the Heritage District is the pick. Carved stone surroundings, candlelit paths near the Old Town walls, and a rate of $195-250/night that includes the kind of atmosphere money usually can't buy.
Culture & History
Stay in the AlUla Heritage District and you're 5 minutes walk from the abandoned mud-brick city and 20 minutes by car from Hegra, the best-preserved Nabataean site outside of Petra. The archaeology here is world-class.
Family
Golden Sands Hotel AlUla on the Hijaz Road Corridor gives families space, a pool, and easy car access to both Gharameel and the main valley sites. It's not glamorous, but it works at $175-220/night.
Budget
Old Town and AlUla Valley are where the $55-110/night options live. Sahary AlUla Resort keeps you inside the historic quarter at the lowest prices in town. Bring a car and you can do AlUla properly without burning cash on accommodation.
Nature & Desert
Gharameel Area has the most dramatic desert scenery in all of northwest Saudi Arabia. AlUla Horizons Hotel is your base, and the morning light on the rock pillars before 8am is something you'll spend years trying to photograph properly.
Foodie
AlUla New Downtown near Rasasi Boutique Hotel has the most concentrated dining options, including local Hejazi cuisine spots on Al Hijr Street. The date farm restaurants in AlUla Valley during harvest season (October-November) are the real insider move.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
When to Visit AlUla
When to visit AlUla and what to pay.
Peak Season (Dec-Mar)
Winter at Tantora festival runs December through March with concerts at Maraya and active archaeology programming across Hegra and Dadan. Temperatures are genuinely pleasant, 10-22°C, and this is the only time you'll experience AlUla at its social peak. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for Ashar Valley resorts and expect $280-450/night at Banyan Tree during peak festival weekends.
Spring (Apr-May)
April and May are the underrated window. Festival crowds have cleared, temperatures are still manageable at 22-32°C, and hotel rates drop 25-35% across the board. Shaden Resort AlUla in AlUla Valley comes down to $120-150/night and you'll have Hegra almost to yourself on weekday mornings.
Summer (Jun-Sep)
Prices hit their floor and crowds disappear, but for real reasons. It reaches 42-43°C in July and August and most outdoor sites either close midday or cap visit times severely. Habitas AlUla drops to $150/night during this window. Only worthwhile if you're genuinely heat-tolerant and want to visit the indoor Heritage District exhibitions.
Autumn (Oct-Nov)
October is the best-kept secret in AlUla travel. Temperatures fall back to a manageable 25-35°C, the date harvest season is in full swing in AlUla Valley, and hotels are still at pre-festival rates. Tayba Hotel AlUla in the Heritage District runs $195-220/night this time of year before jumping for December bookings.
Booking Tips for AlUla
Insider tips for booking hotels in AlUla.
Book Hegra permits before your hotel.
Hegra entry slots sell out first during Winter at Tantora (December-March). Lock in your dates on the Experience AlUla platform, then build your hotel booking around them. Don't do this in reverse. We've seen too many people stuck with a confirmed hotel and no Hegra entry for their travel dates.
Ashar Valley is worth the premium. in winter.
Between April and November, the $280-450/night Ashar Valley rates are harder to justify when Shaden Resort in AlUla Valley gives you 80% of the experience at $120-180/night. But during festival season when Maraya is active and the valley is lit up at night, the premium pays off. Seasonal booking strategy matters here more than almost anywhere.
Get a car. Full stop.
Taxis from AlUla New Downtown to Gharameel run 80-120 SAR each way. Do that twice a day for 5 days and you've spent more than a night at Habitas AlUla. Car hire from Prince Abdul Majeed Airport runs 150-250 SAR per day for a 4WD, which is what you want on the tracks around Jabal AlFil and Gharameel.
Don't trust 'valley view' photos without checking the map pin.
At least 4 hotels outside our vetted list show Ashar Valley canyon photos in their listings while actually sitting on Hijaz Road, 18+ km away. Always cross-reference the exact GPS coordinates on Google Maps before booking anywhere that advertises 'AlUla rock views' at a suspiciously low price.
Festival accommodation fills in 48 hours.
When Winter at Tantora announce their Maraya concert lineup, usually in October, AlUla's quality hotels sell out within 48 hours for the concert weekends. Subscribe to Experience AlUla's newsletter or check their Instagram in September. Once the lineup drops, you have a two-day window before you're looking at Tabuk as a base.
Dress code applies outside resort grounds.
All 10 vetted hotels are relaxed within their own grounds. But the moment you're in AlUla Old Town, Dadan, Hegra, or anywhere public, dress modestly. Shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. The Heritage District in particular has site guards who will ask you to cover up. It's not worth the friction. just pack accordingly.
Hotels in AlUla — FAQ
Everything you need to know before booking hotels in AlUla.
What's the best area to stay in AlUla?
Ashar Valley is the sweet spot. You're within 10 minutes of Maraya Concert Hall and the valley rock formations, and the hotels here are genuinely good. AlUla Heritage District is a close second if you want walkable access to the Old Town mud-brick ruins and Dadan site.
When is the best time to visit AlUla?
November through March is the window. Temperatures sit between 12-22°C, outdoor sites are actually enjoyable, and the Winter at Tantora festival runs December-March with concerts at Maraya. Avoid June-August: it hits 42°C and half the outdoor attractions close or limit hours.
How much does a hotel in AlUla cost per night?
Budget options in Old Town and AlUla Valley start around $55-85/night. Mid-range in Ashar Valley or the Heritage District runs $120-250/night. Luxury at Banyan Tree AlUla or Aman Al Jabal near Jabal AlFil starts at $280 and tops out around $750/night during peak festival season.
Is AlUla worth visiting for just 2-3 days?
Yes, but be strategic. Hegra alone needs a half-day minimum. Combine it with Dadan, Elephant Rock, and a sunset at Gharameel and 3 days is a tight but solid trip. Base yourself in Ashar Valley or near New Downtown to cut down on daily drive times between sites.
Do I need a car in AlUla?
Yes. Public transport between sites doesn't exist in any practical form. Taxis and ride-hails from AlUla New Downtown to Hegra run around 60-80 SAR each way. Most mid-range and luxury resorts offer shuttle services to key sites, but don't rely on that as your only plan.
What's the cheapest area to stay in AlUla?
Old Town near the historic mud-brick quarter has the lowest rates, $55-85/night. AlUla Valley is the next step up at $75-110/night and gives better access to the main archaeological corridor. Both are fine for budget travellers who have a car or don't mind booking taxis daily.
Are there family-friendly hotels in AlUla?
Golden Sands Hotel AlUla on the Hijaz Road Corridor is the pick here, with family rooms and pool space. Shaden Resort AlUla in AlUla Valley is also solid for families, rated 8.3 and priced $120-180/night with space to breathe. Both are within 20-30 minutes of Hegra by car.
Which hotel in AlUla has the best location?
Rasasi Boutique Hotel in AlUla New Downtown earns the Best Location badge for a reason. You're walking distance to the main dining strip and central taxi hub, and 15 minutes by car to both Hegra and the Heritage District. It's priced $160-210/night, which is fair for the convenience.
What's the best luxury hotel in AlUla?
Aman Al Jabal near Jabal AlFil is the top-rated property in the region at 9.5. It's $420-750/night, yes, but the positioning against the sandstone cliffs is unlike anything else in Saudi Arabia. Banyan Tree AlUla in Ashar Valley is the slightly more accessible luxury option at $280-450/night with a 9.1 rating.
Is AlUla safe for tourists?
AlUla is one of Saudi Arabia's safest destinations for international visitors. The Royal Commission for AlUla has invested heavily in tourist infrastructure since 2019, and the sites are well-staffed. Standard precautions apply: dress modestly outside resort grounds, carry your ID, and avoid wandering unmarked desert roads alone after dark.
Do AlUla hotels serve alcohol?
No. Alcohol isn't served anywhere in AlUla or Saudi Arabia. All 10 vetted hotels are fully dry. This is non-negotiable and not a hotel policy, it's national law. Plan accordingly and don't try to work around it.
How far is the nearest airport from AlUla hotels?
Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport (ULH) is about 20 minutes from AlUla New Downtown and 30-40 minutes from Ashar Valley resorts. Direct flights operate from Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dubai. Taxis from the airport to central AlUla run 50-90 SAR depending on your destination.
