Why These Hotels Made Our List
Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.
Hazyview Backpackers
This is a no-frills base camp for budget travellers heading into Kruger National Park. The property sits right along the R40 in Hazyview town, within walking distance of the Spar and local shops. Dorm beds are clean and the private rooms are basic but functional. Staff can arrange affordable safari day trips into the park. Do not expect luxury, but the value for the area is hard to beat.
Check Availability
Numbi Hotel
The Numbi Hotel has been a fixture on the road to Numbi Gate for decades and caters mostly to self-drive Kruger visitors. Rooms are straightforward motel-style units with air conditioning and reliable Wi-Fi. The on-site restaurant serves solid South African comfort food at reasonable prices. It is a practical overnight stop rather than a destination in itself. The pool area is a welcome bonus after a long day in the bush.
Check Availability
Chestnut Country Lodge
Chestnut Country Lodge sits on a working farm along the Sabie River Road, surrounded by mango and nut orchards. The chalets are well-spaced and private, each with a small veranda overlooking the gardens. Breakfast is generous and made mostly from farm produce. It is a quieter option than the lodges closer to Kruger, which suits couples and families looking to unwind. The staff go out of their way to arrange activities including white-water rafting on the Sabie River.
Check Availability
Kruger Park Lodge
Kruger Park Lodge is a large timeshare-style resort on the Sabie River, about 8km from the Paul Kruger Gate. The property has multiple pools, a golf course, and a decent restaurant that handles big groups well. Units range from studios to multi-bedroom chalets and most have full kitchens. It can feel busy and resort-like during school holidays. The location on the river makes for excellent bird watching right from your deck.
Check Availability
Sabi River Sun Resort
The Sabi River Sun sits directly on the banks of the Sabie River and is one of the more established resorts in the Hazyview area. Rooms are spacious and recently renovated, with river-facing units worth the small price premium. The hotel has a proper kids club and multiple pool areas, making it a strong choice for families. The on-site Sun restaurant is reliable if not exciting. Book well ahead for the Easter school holiday period as it fills up fast.
Check Availability
Rissington Inn
Rissington Inn is consistently one of the highest-rated properties in the Hazyview area, sitting on the Old Pretoria Road just outside town. The inn has a genuinely personal atmosphere, with owners who are visible and attentive without being overbearing. Rooms are individually decorated with local art and quality linens. The pool terrace and gardens are immaculate and the dinners are a highlight, featuring local seasonal ingredients. This is the kind of place that earns repeat visitors.
Check Availability
Bohm's Zeederberg Country House
Bohm's Zeederberg sits on a private farm about 20 minutes from Hazyview near White River, offering a peaceful alternative to the busier lodges closer to Kruger. The colonial-style manor house is surrounded by indigenous gardens and the five suites are spacious and elegantly furnished. Breakfasts and dinners are served communally which suits travellers happy to meet other guests. The owners have deep knowledge of the Lowveld region and give genuinely useful local advice. It is a romantic retreat that rewards slow travel.
Check Availability
Hippo Hollow Country Estate
Hippo Hollow Country Estate is built into the banks of the Sabie River and hippos genuinely do appear below the terrace most evenings. The thatched chalets are large, well-furnished, and each has a river or garden view. The main restaurant and bar overlook the river and serve good food in a setting that consistently impresses guests. It is a step up from the standard Hazyview resort experience without crossing into full luxury pricing. The 20-minute drive to Paul Kruger Gate makes it a practical and scenic base for Kruger day trips.
Check Availability
Ulusaba Private Game Reserve
Ulusaba is a Sir Richard Branson-owned private reserve in the Sabi Sand, accessible from Hazyview via a short transfer. Two camps, Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge, offer dramatically different experiences but both deliver exceptional Big Five game viewing on private land with no fences between here and Kruger. The guiding standard is among the best in southern Africa and the food matches a top restaurant in any city. All-inclusive pricing covers two game drives daily, meals, and most drinks. This is one of the premier safari experiences in the country.
Check Availability
Singita Boulders Lodge
Singita Boulders Lodge is set on the Sand River inside the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve, reached by light aircraft or road transfer from Hazyview. Each of the twelve suites is a standalone villa with a private plunge pool and unobstructed river views. Singita's reputation for exceptional guiding, food, and conservation work is fully justified by the on-the-ground experience. Leopard sightings in this concession are remarkably frequent given the low vehicle density. The price is significant but the Singita experience consistently delivers for travellers who want the very best of the South African bush.

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.
Kruger Gate Road vs. Sabie River: Which base is right for you?
Kruger Gate Road puts you closest to Paul Kruger Gate, roughly 10 minutes from the turnoff. Kruger Park Lodge sits out here in the thick bush off the R536, and the whole corridor feels like proper wilderness. If your main goal is maximising time inside Kruger, this is where to be.
Sabie River is more atmospheric for evenings. Hippo Hollow and Sabi River Sun both sit on the water, and there's something about a gin at sunset with hippos grunting across the river that Kruger Gate Road can't replicate. You're about 25 minutes from Paul Kruger Gate from here, so factor that in if you're doing early morning drives.
The honest guide to Sabi Sand luxury lodges
Singita Boulders Lodge and Ulusaba are in a different category entirely. We're talking $1,500-2,500/night at Singita and $1,200-2,000/night at Ulusaba. Both sit inside Sabi Sand Game Reserve, which shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger. You get private game drives, off-road access, expert guides, and food that would hold its own in a Cape Town restaurant.
Don't book these on a whim and then complain about the price. They're worth every rand if a once-in-a-decade safari experience is what you're after. If you're budget-conscious, stay in Hazyview and day-trip into Kruger. But if you've saved up for something special, Sabi Sand delivers.
Perry's Farm Road and the mid-range sweet spot
Perry's Farm is one of those micro-areas that gets overlooked because it's not on the river and not right on the Kruger road. But Chestnut Country Lodge here is consistently one of our favourite properties in the region. At $110-150/night, it's sharp value. Perry's Bridge Hollow retail and restaurant strip is a 5-minute walk, which matters when you want dinner options.
The area sits off the R536 between Hazyview town and the Sabie River bend. It's green, private, and genuinely pretty. We'd put someone who wants comfort without resort-scale pricing here every time.
Budget travel in Hazyview: what's real, what's a trap
Hazyview Backpackers in Town Centre is the only budget option we'd actually recommend. At $45-70/night it's honest about what it is. The guesthouses along the R40 strip that advertise rates under $60 but haven't been renovated since 2004 are not worth it. We've seen the photos versus reality gap on those places more times than we'd like.
Numbi Hotel on Numbi Gate Road is a genuine step up at $75-99/night and punches above its price. It's 15 minutes from Numbi Gate and the food is better than anything you'd expect at that price point. For solo travellers or couples who don't need a river view, it's the best value in Hazyview.
How to time your Hazyview trip around school holidays
South African school holidays hit Hazyview hard. June-July school break and the October long weekend see Kruger Park Lodge and Sabi River Sun filling up 6-8 weeks out. Prices at mid-range Sabie River properties jump 20-35% during those windows. Book by late April for June travel if you want the good rooms.
The Christmas to New Year stretch is the worst for value and the best for atmosphere if you like it busy. Rissington Inn on Old Pretoria Road is particularly popular with Joburg families during this period. Don't expect to walk in off the street in December at any of the river properties.
Day trips from Hazyview: Panorama Route logistics
God's Window and the Blyde River Canyon Viewpoint are 45-60 minutes northeast on the R532 through Graskop. Do it as an early start from Hazyview, not an afternoon trip. By midday the viewpoints cloud over, especially November through February. The Graskop Gorge Big Swing is right in town if you've got someone in your group who needs an adrenaline fix.
Sudwala Caves southwest toward Nelspruit on the N4 is a good wet-season option when Kruger visibility drops. It's about 55 minutes from central Hazyview. Fuel up before you leave town as petrol stations get busy on weekend mornings at the Engen on the R40.
Hazyview's best neighborhoods
Start with Sabie River if you want atmosphere without blowing the budget. The Sabi Sand properties are world-class but set your expectations: you're paying for a full safari experience, not just a bed.
Sabie River 2 vetted hotels Riverfront atmosphere, hippos at dusk, and some of the best settings in the Lowveld.
Riverfront atmosphere, hippos at dusk, and some of the best settings in the Lowveld.
The Sabie River corridor runs along the southern edge of Hazyview and it's genuinely the most scenic base in the area. Hippo Hollow Country Estate and Sabi River Sun Resort both sit right on the bank. Mornings here start with birdsong and the odd hippo snort.
You're not directly on a Kruger gate from here. Paul Kruger Gate is about 25 minutes north on the R536. That's a small trade-off. The river setting more than compensates if you're not racing to be first through the gates at 5:30am.
Prices run $145-245/night across both properties. This isn't budget territory, but it's not Sabi Sand either. For couples and families who want proper bush atmosphere without the all-inclusive price tag, this stretch is hard to beat.
Kruger Gate Road 1 vetted hotel Closest base to Paul Kruger Gate. serious about safari, short on frills.
Closest base to Paul Kruger Gate. serious about safari, short on frills.
The R536 out toward Paul Kruger Gate is where you stay when Kruger is the whole point of the trip. Kruger Park Lodge sits out here in proper bush, about 10 minutes from the gate turnoff. The self-catering chalets suit groups and families who want independence.
Don't expect a main street or a restaurant strip. Perry's Bridge Hollow on Perry's Farm Road is the closest decent dining, about 15 minutes back toward town. That's not a problem if you're buying groceries and cooking in, which most guests at Kruger Park Lodge do.
Rooms run $130-190/night. It's not cheap, but you're paying for that gate proximity. We've seen people book cheaper properties in town and spend half their game drive time in a car. This road solves that.
Hazyview Town & Perry's Farm 3 vetted hotels The practical base: restaurants nearby, prices sensible, bush close enough.
The practical base: restaurants nearby, prices sensible, bush close enough.
This covers everything from Hazyview Town Centre along the R40 out to the Perry's Farm Road area. You've got Hazyview Backpackers in the town centre for budget travellers, and Chestnut Country Lodge on Perry's Farm Road for mid-range comfort. Perry's Bridge Hollow retail strip is the social hub of this pocket.
Numbi Gate Road heads west from here to Numbi Gate, about 15 minutes. That's Kruger's quieter western entrance and a favourite with locals who want to skip the Paul Kruger Gate queues on peak weekends. Numbi Hotel sits right on this road and is sharp value at $75-99/night.
Prices across this region run $45-150/night, making it the most accessible stretch in Hazyview for budget-conscious travellers. It's not as atmospheric as the river. But you save real money and still have easy Kruger access.
Old Pretoria Road & Surrounds 1 vetted hotel Rissington Inn's territory: quiet, refined, and consistently the highest-rated in the area.
Rissington Inn's territory: quiet, refined, and consistently the highest-rated in the area.
Old Pretoria Road runs northeast of central Hazyview and it's where Rissington Inn sits. This is consistently the best-rated property in the Hazyview area at 9.0/10, and it earns it. The gardens are proper, the service is personal, and the food genuinely good.
You're about 20 minutes from Paul Kruger Gate from here. The road is quieter than the R536 and R538 corridors, which suits the property's character. Don't come here expecting a bustling atmosphere. Come here for a grown-up bush break.
At $155-210/night it's the priciest non-river, non-Sabi Sand option in our list. Worth it. We'd put couples here over most of the Sabie River options if atmosphere and service matter more than a water view.
White River Surrounds 1 vetted hotel Garden country, 18 km south of Hazyview: calmer, greener, and genuinely romantic.
Garden country, 18 km south of Hazyview: calmer, greener, and genuinely romantic.
White River sits about 18 km south of Hazyview on the R40 and has a completely different energy. It's cooler, more lush, and feels like proper farm country. Bohm's Zeederberg Country House is out here, set in mature gardens with a pool that looks like it belongs in a magazine.
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is only 10 minutes from White River, which makes it a logical first or last night if you're flying in. Hazyview itself is a 20-minute drive north. The Panorama Route towns of Graskop and Sabie are also well-placed from here.
Rates at Zeederberg run $170-230/night. For what you get, that's fair. We'd send honeymooners and anniversary travellers here before anywhere else in the region.
Sabi Sand Game Reserve 2 vetted hotels Private game reserve luxury: the best Big Five experience in southern Africa, priced accordingly.
Private game reserve luxury: the best Big Five experience in southern Africa, priced accordingly.
Sabi Sand sits adjacent to Kruger's western boundary and operates as a private reserve. Singita Boulders Lodge and Ulusaba Private Game Reserve are both out here, and both are world-class. You're not driving yourself through gates. Expert rangers take you off-road in open vehicles at dawn and dusk.
This is genuinely remote. The nearest town is Skukuza, and the lodge experience is intentionally self-contained. All meals, game drives, and most activities are included in the rate, which starts at $1,200/night at Ulusaba and goes to $2,500/night at Singita. These aren't hotel rooms with a view. They're full safari programs.
Sabi Sand leopard sightings are among the most reliable on the continent. If that sentence means something to you, book it. If it doesn't, stay in Hazyview and save the money.
Best Areas by Vibe
Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Hazyview.
Romantic
White River surrounds, specifically Bohm's Zeederberg on the R40 south, is the call. Mature gardens, candlelit dinners, and none of the school-holiday crowd that hits the river lodges.
Culture
Perry's Bridge Hollow on Perry's Farm Road has the best concentration of local craft and art in the area, plus the Shangaan Cultural Village is 15 minutes north on the R536. Go on a weekday when it's quieter.
Family
Sabi River Sun Resort on the Sabie River has the infrastructure families actually need: a big pool, kids' programming, and room layouts that fit four people without everyone sharing a bathroom. It's built for this.
Budget
Town Centre and Numbi Gate Road are your best bets, starting at $45/night at Hazyview Backpackers. Numbi Hotel on Numbi Gate Road at $75-99/night is the best value upgrade in the region.
Adventure
Kruger Gate Road puts you 10 minutes from Paul Kruger Gate for early game drives, and the Graskop Gorge Big Swing is 45 minutes northeast. Base yourself near the R536 and pack the days full.
Foodie
Perry's Bridge Hollow is the most reliable food precinct in Hazyview, with Ristorante Terrazzo and Cattle Baron sitting within 200 metres of each other. Rissington Inn on Old Pretoria Road does the best in-house dining of any property in the area.
Location Quality
Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.
Value for Money
We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.
Guest Experience
We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.
When to Visit Hazyview
When to visit Hazyview and what to pay.
Peak Season (Jun-Aug)
Dry winter months mean thin vegetation, animals near water, and the best Big Five sightings of the year. June and July coincide with South African school holidays, so Kruger Park Lodge and Sabi River Sun fill fast. Book 6-8 weeks out for the good rooms at $130-210/night.
Shoulder Season (Apr-May & Sep)
This is our pick for most travellers. Wildlife viewing is still excellent in May and September, crowds ease off, and hotel prices across Sabie River and Kruger Gate Road drop 15-25% from peak. April is warm with occasional rain but the bush is lush and green.
Wet Season (Nov-Feb)
November through February brings afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and temperatures regularly hitting 33-35°C in Hazyview. Game viewing is harder with tall grass hiding everything. Hotel prices at Numbi Hotel and Chestnut Country Lodge drop to their lowest, around $75-145/night. December and January spike again for South African domestic holiday demand.
Late Dry Season (Mar & Oct)
October is one of the hottest months in Hazyview, often hitting 32°C before the rains break. Animals are stressed and water-dependent, which means concentrated sightings near rivers. March is the tail end of wet season: still warm at 22-30°C, prices moderate, and the Sabie River is full and photogenic.
Booking Tips for Hazyview
Insider tips for booking hotels in Hazyview.
Book Kruger Gate Road lodges by April for June travel
South African school holidays land in late June and July every year without fail. Kruger Park Lodge on the R536 and anything with 'river' in the name fill up 6-8 weeks ahead of that window. If you're travelling in June, April is when you should be booking, not May.
Hire a car in Nelspruit, not at the lodge
Lodges and local operators near Perry's Bridge Hollow sometimes offer car hire at rates 30-40% above Nelspruit airport pricing. Budget and Avis both operate at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near White River. Standard hatchbacks run $40-65/day. Book online before you fly in.
Use Numbi Gate to skip Paul Kruger Gate queues
On peak weekends and public holidays, the queue at Paul Kruger Gate on the R536 backs up significantly. Numbi Gate on the R538 is 15 minutes from Hazyview Town Centre and handles a fraction of the traffic. You'll enter the park 10-15 km further south, but the time saving is real.
Do Panorama Route on a weekday morning
God's Window and the Blyde River Canyon viewpoints cloud over by midday most days, especially November through February. Leave Hazyview by 7:00am, drive the R532 north through Graskop, and you'll have the viewpoints largely to yourself. The round trip from Hazyview is about 140 km.
Self-cater at Kruger Park Lodge to cut food costs significantly
The chalets on Kruger Gate Road at Kruger Park Lodge have full kitchens. The Checkers supermarket on the R40 in Hazyview Town Centre is a 15-minute drive and stocks everything you need. Self-catering for a family of 4 can save R500-800/day compared to eating out at Perry's Bridge Hollow every meal.
Call Rissington Inn directly for better rates
Rissington Inn on Old Pretoria Road consistently offers better package pricing when you book direct versus third-party platforms. They regularly include breakfast or a safari activity in direct bookings that costs extra on booking platforms. The rate difference can be $30-45/night on a 3-night stay.
Hotels in Hazyview — FAQ
Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Hazyview.
Where should I stay in Hazyview for the first time?
Kruger Gate Road is the sweet spot for first-timers. You're 10 minutes from Paul Kruger Gate, close to Perry's Bridge Hollow for evening dining, and properties here sit in the $130-190/night range. It's not the cheapest corridor, but you won't spend your morning in traffic wondering if you missed the lion.
What's the cheapest way to stay near Kruger?
Hazyview Backpackers on the R40 through Town Centre starts at $45/night and is genuinely good for what it is. You're about 20 minutes by car from Numbi Gate. Don't expect luxury, but dorms are clean, the communal area is social, and staff know every budget safari operator in the area.
Is Hazyview safe for tourists?
The lodge and guesthouse strips along Kruger Gate Road and Sabie River are perfectly safe. Stick to those corridors at night. The town centre around the R40 feels scrappier after dark, so if you're on foot, be aware of your surroundings and don't flash gear.
How far is Hazyview from Kruger National Park?
It depends which gate. Numbi Gate on the R538 is about 12 km from central Hazyview, roughly a 15-minute drive. Paul Kruger Gate via Kruger Gate Road is closer to 40 km, but that road is fast and scenic. Most lodges will tell you the exact drive time to their nearest gate.
When is the best time to visit Hazyview?
May through September is dry season. Grass thins out, animals cluster near water, and you'll actually see them. July and August are the sweet spot: temperatures sit around 12-26°C and hotel prices across Sabie River and Kruger Gate Road are competitive. Avoid December to January if you dislike humidity and crowds.
What's the difference between staying in Hazyview versus Sabi Sand?
Night and day, literally. Hazyview hotels run $45-245/night and you self-drive into Kruger. Sabi Sand lodges like Singita Boulders and Ulusaba run $1,200-2,500/night and include private game drives with expert rangers, all meals, and off-road access to the Big Five. If you're comparing the two on price alone, you're missing the point.
Do I need a car in Hazyview?
Yes. Full stop. There's no reliable public transport between lodges, and the distances between Hazyview Town Centre, Sabie River, and the Kruger gates make walking pointless. Car hire from Nelspruit's Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport runs about $40-65/day for a standard hatchback. Budget an extra 20-30% for fuel if you're doing Panorama Route day trips.
What are the best restaurants near Hazyview hotels?
Perry's Bridge Hollow on Perry's Farm Road has the most reliable cluster: Ristorante Terrazzo for pizza, Cattle Baron for game meat, and a decent deli for early morning snacks before a game drive. Most Sabie River lodges do their own breakfast, so dinner is where you want to venture out.
Are Hazyview hotels family-friendly?
Several are, but not all. Sabi River Sun Resort on the Sabie River is built for families: a large pool, kids' activities, and room configurations that actually work for four people. Hippo Hollow Country Estate is also excellent for families and sits right on the riverbank. Budget closer to $145-245/night for those two.
How do I get from Johannesburg to Hazyview?
Drive the N4 east from Joburg, turning north on the R40 at Nelspruit. The total is about 430 km, roughly a 4.5-hour drive. Flying into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near White River cuts that to a 35-minute drive to Hazyview. The airport is small but has daily flights from OR Tambo on SA Express and other operators.
What's the best hotel on the Sabie River?
Hippo Hollow Country Estate edges it for location. You're right on the riverbank, hippos genuinely cruise past at dusk, and the grounds are proper. Rooms run $200-245/night. Sabi River Sun Resort on the same stretch is a notch below on charm but better for families with kids who need structured activities.
Is White River worth staying in instead of Hazyview?
White River is 18 km south on the R40 and has a quieter, more garden-country feel. Bohm's Zeederberg Country House there runs $170-230/night and is one of the most romantic properties in the region. It makes sense if you're doing Panorama Route day trips and don't need to be right at the Kruger gate.
