Where to Stay in South Sudan

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel. Here's what you need to know.

Getting to South Sudan

Ethiopian Airlines flies Addis Ababa to Juba daily, 2 hours. Kenya Airways operates Nairobi to Juba 3 times weekly. Return fares run $400-800 from East African hubs. The overland crossing at Nimule from Kampala, Uganda is a common budget option: 8-10 hours total including the border.

Visa on arrival at Juba Airport costs $100 cash. Bring a yellow fever certificate or you will be turned back. Register with your embassy within 24 hours of arrival. UNDSS registers all UN and NGO staff in-country.

Juba: The Capital on the Nile

Juba sits on the White Nile. The waterfront near Juba Bridge has basic bars and river views. The Konyo Konyo market is the most authentic urban experience. Ministries and NGO offices cluster around the airport road. The city lacks formal tourist sites but has gritty energy.

Power cuts are daily. The Radisson Blu and Juba Grand Hotel have generators. Internet is available but slow. Most transactions are cash in USD. The city operates on Kampala and Nairobi supply chains.

Nimule: Uganda Border and Wildlife

Nimule is 200 km south of Juba on the main road to Uganda. The national park has hippos in the Nile, elephants crossing the road, and good birding. The Uganda border crossing is 2 km from Nimule town, one of the busiest in the region.

Nimule Paradise Hotel and Nimule River Lodge are the two lodging options, both $130-200/night. Game drives run $30-50 with a ranger. The drive from Juba takes 4-5 hours on a paved road.

Boma National Park and the Great Migration

Boma National Park holds one of Africa's least-known wonders: the white-eared kob migration, with 1 million animals moving through January to April. In scale it rivals the Masai Mara. Tiang, Mongalla gazelle, and buffalo are also present.

Access requires a charter flight from Juba ($400-600 round trip for the plane). No tourist lodges exist. Bring camping gear, food, water, and fuel. Contact Sudan Wildlife Services in Juba for current access permits and security situation.

The Sudd: Africa's Great Wetland

The Sudd wetland in Upper Nile State is the size of England. It supports massive populations of water birds including shoebill storks, rare and sought-after by birders worldwide. Pelicans, herons, and darters are in enormous numbers.

Reaching the Sudd requires charter flights to Malakal then boat rental. No tourist infrastructure. This is expedition travel: bring a guide with local contacts, full camping equipment, and water purification. The Malakal area has improving security but check current advisories.

Staying Safe and Practical Tips

Register with your embassy on arrival. Check UNDSS security phase daily if staying more than a few days. Outside Juba and the main Juba-Nimule road, travel with a local guide or NGO coordination. Night travel is not recommended anywhere.

Bring all medications from home. Juba pharmacies are unreliable. Have a medical evacuation plan: most serious cases go to Nairobi (1.5 hours). Carry emergency cash of at least $500 in small bills. Solar chargers and water filters are essential outside Juba.

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of South Sudan.

Romantic

Not a romantic destination. If you must, the Radisson Blu Juba has a functional restaurant and bar. Nimule River Lodge has riverside views. But visiting South Sudan for romance is not recommended.

Culture

Juba's Konyo Konyo market is a genuine immersion in South Sudanese daily life. The John Garang Mausoleum memorializes the country founding leader. Local music at riverside bars on Friday and Saturday evenings is authentic.

Family

South Sudan is not recommended for family travel given security unpredictability outside Juba. For families based here for work, the Radisson Blu compound and Acacia Village have safe environments with pools and reliable facilities.

Budget

Logali House and Terrain Hotel in Juba from $55-85/night are the NGO worker standards. Meals at Ethiopian restaurants near the airport road run $5-12. Shared transport to Nimule costs $10-15. South Sudan is not cheap even for budget travelers.

Beach

No beaches. The White Nile at Juba has a waterfront but no swimming. Nimule has river access with hippos and crocodiles nearby. Water recreation is not advisable in most parts of the country.

Foodie

Juba has surprisingly good Ethiopian restaurants near the airport road, $5-12/meal. Indian-run restaurants serve curry and rice for $8-15. Grilled goat (nyama choma) at local stalls costs $4-6. The Radisson Blu has international food at $15-30 per main.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed accommodation across Juba, Nimule, Wau, Malakal, and Bor. Security situation, logistics, and whether the hotel is actually usable were primary factors.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

When to Visit South Sudan: Season by Season

Hotel prices, crowds, and weather vary dramatically. Here's what to expect each season.

Limited Access

Rainy Season (Apr-Oct)

Avg hotel: $100-280/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 24-32C

The rains make most upcountry roads impassable. Juba stays accessible by air. Wau and Malakal are reachable by plane but not road. The Sudd floods completely. Only visit for work-related reasons during this period.

Improving

Transition (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $100-300/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 26-34C

Roads begin to dry in October. Nimule becomes accessible by road from Juba again. This is when early-bird visitors arrive for the dry season. Hotels in Juba have good availability.

Peak Wildlife

Hot Dry (Feb-Apr)

Avg hotel: $140-420/nightCrowds: Moderate-HighTemp: 32-40C

The Boma migration is in full swing. White-eared kob in massive numbers. Maximum heat: Juba averages 40C in March. Drink 3-4 liters of water daily. This is when most wildlife-focused researchers and photographers visit.

How to Book Hotels in South Sudan

Smart booking strategies that save money without sacrificing quality.

Register with your embassy within 24 hours

This is not optional in South Sudan. US, UK, EU, and most other nationals should register online or in person with their embassy in Juba on arrival. UNDSS (UN security system) is another resource for security updates. Check their daily security phase ratings online.

Bring all your cash in USD small bills

South Sudan pounds are volatile. USD runs the economy for visitors. Hotels, restaurants, and transport all price in USD. ATMs are unreliable even in Juba. Bring at least $500-800 in small bills ($10s and $20s). Money changers operate on the street near Konyo Konyo market.

Have a medical evacuation plan before you arrive

AMREF Flying Doctors or similar evacuation insurance is essential. The Juba Teaching Hospital can handle basic care. Anything serious goes to Nairobi by air ambulance, 1.5 hours. ICRC and MSF operate in-country but primarily for humanitarian cases. Check with your employer or travel insurer.

Use reliable transport from airport to city

The Radisson Blu and Juba Grand Hotel offer airport transfers for guests ($20-30). Independent taxis are available but negotiate price before getting in. Do not use informal vehicles. The airport road to town is 20-30 minutes in traffic. Travel only in daylight.

Book mid-range and luxury hotels 2-3 weeks ahead

The Radisson Blu, Acacia Village, and Juba Grand Hotel fill quickly with NGO delegations and government visitors. Weekend bookings are especially tight. Budget options like Logali House are often available last-minute but quality is what you would expect for $55-85/night.

Arrange Boma park visits through Juba operators

Boma National Park is not accessible independently. Charter flights from Juba cost $400-600 for the plane. Sudan Wildlife Services in Juba can arrange permits and ranger guides. The migration January to April is worth the effort for wildlife photographers. Allow 3-5 days minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in South Sudan

Straight answers from our team after reviewing hotels across South Sudan.

Is South Sudan safe to visit?

It depends where and when. Juba has improved significantly since 2018 and most NGO workers live and work here without major incident. The Equatoria region around Juba and Nimule is more stable. The north (Unity State, Upper Nile) and parts of Jonglei have ongoing conflict. Check UNDSS and UK/US travel advisories before planning. Register with your embassy on arrival.

What is there to do in Juba?

Juba market near Konyo Konyo is one of the most chaotic and interesting in East Africa. The White Nile waterfront has basic bars and river views. St. Theresa Cathedral (1940s, built by Verona Fathers) is near the central roundabout. Juba Bridge over the Nile was rebuilt in 2012. Most visitors are here for work, but the city has genuine character.

How do I get to South Sudan?

Juba International Airport has flights from Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines, 2 hours), Nairobi (Kenya Airways, 1.5 hours), Cairo, and Kampala. Return airfares run $400-800. The border crossing at Nimule from Uganda is a popular overland option, 4-5 hours from Kampala by road. Always check visa requirements with the South Sudan Embassy before travel.

What currency is used in South Sudan?

The South Sudanese pound (SSP) is the official currency but is highly volatile. US dollars are the practical currency for hotels, restaurants, and significant purchases. Most mid-range and luxury hotels in Juba accept USD directly. Bring more cash than you think you need. Banking services are unreliable and ATMs are scarce outside Juba.

What is Boma National Park?

Boma National Park in Jonglei State hosts one of the world largest wildlife migrations: over 1 million white-eared kob move here annually from January to April. The migration rivals the Serengeti in scale. Access requires charter flights from Juba or a very long overland journey. Organized safaris are rare. Contact Sudan Wildlife Services for permit information.

What accommodation exists outside Juba?

Basic guesthouses operate in Nimule ($130-240/night), Wau ($65-180/night), Malakal ($65-200/night), and Bor ($160-210/night). Standards are functional at best. Expect intermittent power, basic plumbing, and cash-only operations. Bring your own water filter and emergency supplies. The Radisson Blu and Acacia Village in Juba are the only internationally managed hotels in the country.

What is Nimule National Park like?

Nimule National Park covers 410 km2 on the Uganda border. It has hippos and crocodiles in the Nile, elephants, buffalo, and over 100 bird species. The park office is 2 km from Nimule town. Nimule Paradise Hotel is the base for visitors. A ranger guide costs $20-30/day. The Uganda border crossing at Nimule is one of the most active in the region.

What health precautions are essential?

Malaria is present year-round in South Sudan. Start prophylaxis at least 1 week before arrival. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations are strongly recommended. Drink only bottled or treated water. The Juba Teaching Hospital has some facilities but for serious medical issues evacuation to Nairobi or Kampala is necessary.

What is the Sudd and can I visit it?

The Sudd is the world largest tropical wetland, covering up to 130,000 km2 in Upper Nile State. It supports enormous bird populations including the shoebill stork, open-billed stork, and African skimmer. Access is extremely difficult: charter flights to Malakal then boat. No tourist infrastructure exists. This is expedition territory requiring experienced guides and full self-sufficiency.

Do I need a visa for South Sudan?

Yes. A tourist visa costs $100 and is available at Juba International Airport or from South Sudan embassies. Processing takes 3-5 business days in advance. You also need a valid yellow fever certificate. Some nationalities face additional scrutiny. Check with the South Sudan Embassy in your country at least 4 weeks before travel. Journalists need a media accreditation on top of the standard visa.

What are the best hotels in Juba?

Radisson Blu Juba and Juba Grand Hotel are the top options at $300-450/night. Both have security, generators, water systems, and functioning wifi. Acacia Village Hotel and Pyramid Hotel are solid mid-range at $260-360/night. Logali House and Terrain Hotel are the go-to budget options for NGO workers at $55-85/night. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for mid-range and above.

When is the best time to visit South Sudan?

November to March is the dry season: roads are passable, temperatures are 28-35C, and wildlife concentrations are highest at Boma and Nimule. April to October brings rains. The Sudd floods and most roads outside Juba become impassable. Juba is accessible year-round. The Boma migration peaks January to April.
