The restaurant on-site serves reliable Swedish food, and the bar is a decent spot after a day of activities. Conference facilities make it popular with mining industry visitors to the LKAB area. Parking is easy and the building is warm and efficient.

#6

Camp Ripan

Campvägen, Northern Kiruna, Kiruna $145–210/night 8.6/10

The property backs onto open wilderness, making it one of the better spots in Kiruna for northern lights viewing without driving far. Their in-house restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients and is genuinely one of the best dining options in the region. Cabins with glass roofs book out months in advance, so plan well ahead. The sauna facilities and outdoor hot tub round out the experience nicely.

Arctic Gourmet Cabin hotel interior
#7

Arctic Gourmet Cabin

Abisko National Park, Abisko $160–230/night 8.7/10

Located near Abisko National Park, roughly 100 kilometers west of Kiruna along the E10 road, these standalone cabins offer a remote and intimate stay. Each cabin is heated and has large windows framing the frozen lake or mountain views. The area around Abisko is statistically one of the clearest spots in Europe for northern lights due to the local microclimate. A small kitchen lets you self-cater, though the nearby Abisko Tourist Station has a restaurant. Ideal for couples who want genuine wilderness without roughing it completely.

Björkliden Fjällanläggning hotel interior
#8

Björkliden Fjällanläggning

Björkliden Ski Resort, Björkliden $175–240/night 8.4/10

Björkliden is a small mountain resort village about 90 kilometers from Kiruna on the E10, sitting right at the base of a ski area. The hotel rooms and self-catering chalets are practical and warm, designed for families doing winter sports. Ski-in access and a dedicated children's slope make it very popular with Swedish families during school holidays. The setting beside Torneträsk lake is genuinely spectacular, especially in the blue light of polar winter. Advance booking for the February and April ski seasons is essential.

Icehotel hotel interior
#9

Icehotel

Marknadsvägen, Jukkasjärvi, Jukkasjärvi $290–600/night 9.1/10

The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, about 17 kilometers east of Kiruna along Marknadsvägen, is one of the most iconic places to sleep in the world. Art suites are individually designed by international artists using ice and snow, and no two rooms are the same. Sleeping at minus five degrees Celsius in a specially provided sleeping bag is a real experience, not a gimmick. The year-round warm rooms at the adjacent hotel offer comfort without missing the atmosphere. Dining at the ice restaurant and the ice bar are highlights that justify the price.

Aurora Safari Camp hotel interior
#10

Aurora Safari Camp

Luleå Archipelago Hinterland, Råne älv $380–700/night 9/10

Aurora Safari Camp operates luxury tented cabins in the wilderness southeast of the Kiruna region, accessed by snowmobile or guided transfer in winter. Each heated canvas cabin sits on a private platform in the forest, with a wood-burning stove and high-end bedding. Guided northern lights snowshoe walks and private campfire dinners under the stars are included in the package. The level of personal attention from guides here is exceptional and not found at larger resort properties. This is a genuine splurge but delivers an arctic experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere in Sweden.

Where to Stay in Kiruna

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First time in Kiruna? Start here.

Central Kiruna is your anchor. The new city center around Lars Janssonsgatan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen has the bus terminal, the best restaurants, and the relocated Kiruna Church. all walkable within 15 minutes.

Don't make the mistake of staying right near the old mine district around Gruvstadsparken and expecting a proper town around you. The relocation is ongoing, and that area is patchy. Scandic Kiruna on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen and Kiruna Stadthotel in Central Kiruna are both solidly in the working new city. Start there, get oriented, then consider a day trip to Jukkasjärvi or Abisko.

The honest guide to Northern Lights hotels

Every hotel in Kiruna claims Aurora views. Most are overstating it. City-center light pollution on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen means you're not seeing much from your window unless conditions are extreme.

Camp Ripan on Campvägen in northern Kiruna is the best in-town option for Aurora access. they run guided night tours and the grounds have minimal light interference. But if the lights are your only reason for coming, go straight to Abisko. The Arctic Gourmet Cabin in Abisko National Park sits at the base of Nuolja Mountain, and the Aurora Sky Station cable car is literally minutes away. That's the move.

Kiruna on a budget: what's actually worth it

Kiruna Camping & Guesthouse on Campingvägen runs $55-80/night and is genuinely solid for what you pay. It's about 2 km from the new city center, so factor in a 25-minute walk or a $10 taxi into town.

Yellow House Hostel in Central Kiruna at $70-95/night is the best budget value on this list. you're walking distance from everything and the communal setup means you'll meet other travelers who've already figured out the bus to Abisko. We've seen people blow their whole trip budget on an average mid-range hotel when these two would have left them money for the Icehotel tour or an Aurora safari.

When to book (and when to wait)

Northern Lights season from late January to mid-March fills up 3-4 months in advance. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi on Marknadsvägen sells art suites a full year ahead. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: people decide in November they want a February trip and find only $500+/night leftovers.

Summer is genuinely undersold. June and July in Kiruna bring the Midnight Sun, hiking season on the Kungsleden trail starting at Abisko Turiststation, and hotel prices 20-30% lower than winter peak. If you're flexible on season, a July visit to Camp Ripan or Björkliden at off-peak rates is one of Swedish Lapland's best travel values.

Beyond Kiruna: when to base yourself elsewhere

Kiruna city is a practical base, but it's not the most atmospheric place to sleep. If your itinerary is Aurora-heavy, consider basing yourself at Aurora Safari Camp on Råne älv or in Abisko rather than commuting from Central Kiruna nightly.

Björkliden Fjällanläggning at Björkliden Ski Resort, 115 km west of Kiruna on the E10, makes more sense as a base if skiing is your main focus. The resort has its own lifts, and you won't be burning 2 hours of daily driving. It's a $175-240/night commitment, but the tradeoff in convenience and scenery on Lake Torneträsk is worth it.

Kiruna's hotel scene: what's changed recently

The ongoing city relocation has reshuffled the hotel landscape considerably. Several older guesthouses near Bergmästargatan and the original town core have closed or are operating on borrowed time. Always verify your hotel's current address before booking. this is not a typical destination where addresses stay stable.

The upside: the new city center around Lars Janssonsgatan is genuinely nicer than the old one, with proper pedestrian infrastructure and better restaurant access. Hotels like Kiruna Stadthotel and Scandic Kiruna were built with the new urban plan in mind. They feel intentional in a way the old city never quite did.

Kiruna's best neighborhoods

Central Kiruna is your practical base: transport links, restaurants, and the new city center are all within walking distance. But if you're here for the full Arctic experience, prioritize Jukkasjärvi or Camp Ripan in northern Kiruna over a standard city hotel.

Central Kiruna 4 vetted hotels

The practical heart of Swedish Lapland's Arctic capital.

Central Kiruna is the rebuilt new city, anchored around Lars Janssonsgatan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen. The bus terminal, Kiruna Church, and most restaurants are within 15 minutes walk of each other. It's not glamorous, but it works.

Four of our vetted picks are here, spanning $55-185/night. Yellow House Hostel on the budget end attracts a social backpacker crowd. Kiruna Stadthotel is where you go if you want proper comfort without paying Icehotel prices. Scandic Kiruna on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen is the reliable business-grade option.

Avoid the area around Gruvstadsparken and the old city streets. That zone is mid-demolition as part of the LKAB relocation project, and a few still-listed guesthouses there operate without the infrastructure around them.

Best areas Lars Janssonsgatan, Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen
Price range $55-185/night
Best for First-timers, budget travelers, business visitors
Avoid Old city near Gruvstadsparken. mid-demolition zone
Best months November-March, June-July
Jukkasjärvi 1 vetted hotel

Home of the Icehotel. Nothing else like it on the planet.

Jukkasjärvi sits 20 km east of Kiruna on the Torne River. The village is tiny. maybe 500 residents. but the Icehotel on Marknadsvägen has made it one of Sweden's most recognizable addresses. Every room is rebuilt from scratch each autumn using ice harvested from the river.

Staying here at $290-600/night is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime thing, not just a marketing line. The warm rooms (yes, they have them too) are a fallback if you can't handle -5°C sleeping temperatures. The ICEHOTEL 365 section stays frozen year-round using mechanical refrigeration, so you can do this in summer too.

The biggest mistake people make here: booking just one night. You need at least two to decompress from the novelty and actually enjoy it. Dinner at the Icehotel restaurant is worth it; breakfast less so. The village church dating from 1607, 300m from the hotel, is worth 30 minutes of your morning.

Best areas Marknadsvägen, Torne River bank
Price range $290-600/night
Best for Luxury seekers, couples, bucket-list travelers
Avoid Booking only 1 night. you need 2 minimum
Best months December-April (ice rooms), June-August (365 section)
Abisko & Björkliden 2 vetted hotels

Best Aurora odds in Europe. No debate.

Abisko National Park sits 95 km west of Kiruna along the E10, on the southern shore of Lake Torneträsk. The microclimate here produces clearer skies than anywhere else in Swedish Lapland, and the Aurora Sky Station at Nuolja Mountain (accessible by cable car from Abisko Turiststation) is one of the world's most reliable spots for Northern Lights viewing.

Arctic Gourmet Cabin in Abisko National Park at $160-230/night is intimate and seriously good. Only a handful of cabins, direct access to the national park trails, and a kitchen setup that makes self-catering feel almost fine dining. Björkliden, 15 km further west, adds a ski resort dimension with Björkliden Fjällanläggning at $175-240/night.

Getting here without a car means the Abisko leg of the Malmbanan railway from Kiruna Central Station. about 90 minutes. Trains run a few times daily. Once in Abisko, everything is walkable or skiable. Don't expect the restaurant variety of Kiruna town. plan dinners in-house or self-cater.

Best areas Abisko National Park, Björkliden Ski Resort
Price range $160-240/night
Best for Northern Lights, skiing, serious hiking
Avoid Coming without booking the Aurora Sky Station cable car in advance
Best months February-March (Aurora), June-August (hiking)
Northern Kiruna & Camp Ripan Area 1 vetted hotel

The best of both worlds: close to town, far enough for dark skies.

Camp Ripan sits on Campvägen in northern Kiruna, about 2-3 km north of the city center. It's technically still in Kiruna, but the separation from the main urban light pollution makes a real difference for Aurora viewing. The resort has its own Aurora guiding program and activity center.

At $145-210/night it's mid-to-upper range, but the package here is strong: husky safaris, snowmobile tours, and reindeer feeding are all bookable on-site. The restaurant is better than most Kiruna options. And the spa, a genuine rarity in this price bracket this far north, is worth using after a night outside in -20°C.

The 2-3 km to central Lars Janssonsgatan isn't walkable in deep winter unless you're equipped. Taxis run about $10-15 each way. Some guests rent a car for the stay; Camp Ripan has parking. It's a smart pick if you want activity-resort infrastructure without committing to full wilderness pricing.

Best areas Campvägen, northern Kiruna outskirts
Price range $145-210/night
Best for Aurora hunters, active travelers, couples wanting spa access
Avoid Expecting to walk to central Kiruna in winter. take a taxi
Best months January-March, June-July
Aurora Safari Camp & Råne älv 1 vetted hotel

Full wilderness. Glass roof. Serious luxury.

Aurora Safari Camp sits along Råne älv in the Luleå Archipelago hinterland, about 70 km southeast of Kiruna. This is genuinely remote: the surrounding forest is your view on three sides, the river on the fourth, and the sky above is unobstructed and ink-dark on clear nights.

At $380-700/night it's the most expensive pick on this list outside the Icehotel. But the cabins are designed around Aurora watching, with glass ceilings above the beds. You're not paying for a hotel room. you're paying for a specific experience that delivers. The camp runs guided snowshoe safaris and ice fishing, and meals are included in most packages.

Access requires a car or pre-arranged transfer from Kiruna or Luleå Airport. There's no public transport option. This is not a place you stumble into. you book it intentionally, and you come for at least 2 nights. One night doesn't give the weather enough chances to cooperate.

Best areas Råne älv riverbank, Luleå hinterland forest
Price range $380-700/night
Best for Luxury Aurora seekers, romantic breaks, wilderness immersion
Avoid Coming for just 1 night. weather needs 2+ nights to deliver
Best months September-March

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Kiruna.

Romantic Escape

The Torne River in Jukkasjärvi sets the scene: sleeping in an ice room at the Icehotel on Marknadsvägen with reindeer skins and candlelight is as theatrical as romance gets. Book an art suite at least 6 months out.

Culture & History

Central Kiruna's city relocation is one of the most extraordinary urban projects in modern history. the LKAB mine exhibition near Gruvstadsparken explains it well, and the relocated Kiruna Church is an architectural event. Plan 2-3 hours for the mine area alone.

Family Adventure

Björkliden Ski Resort, 115 km west of Kiruna on the E10, is purpose-built for families: ski school, safe piste gradients, and reindeer encounters within walking distance of Björkliden Fjällanläggning. Kids who've done this don't stop talking about it for years.

Budget Smart

Central Kiruna's Yellow House Hostel puts you within 10 minutes walk of Lars Janssonsgatan restaurants and the bus to Abisko for $70-95/night. It's the best entry point for Swedish Lapland without overpaying for a postcode.

Arctic Foodie

Camp Ripan on Campvägen in northern Kiruna has the most serious kitchen in town, with Arctic-sourced menus featuring reindeer, char, and cloudberries. The Arctic Gourmet Cabin in Abisko takes it further. the name is literal.

Wild Nature

Abisko National Park is the anchor: 75 km of marked trails from Abisko Turiststation, Lake Torneträsk stretching 70 km to the west, and the Kungsleden starting point right here. Stay at Arctic Gourmet Cabin and you're inside the park boundary.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Kiruna

Peak

Winter (December-February)

Avg hotel: $130-400/nightCrowds: HighTemp: -15--30°C

This is when everyone wants to come, and prices reflect it. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi opens its ice rooms from December, and January's Kiruna Sami Market draws visitors from across Scandinavia to the area around Torget. Book Jukkasjärvi 6-12 months ahead. Central Kiruna mid-range hotels like Hotell Kebne run $105-155/night even in December. book 3 months out minimum.

Budget Friendly

Summer (June-July)

Avg hotel: $70-180/nightCrowds: Low-ModerateTemp: 12-20°C

The Midnight Sun is genuinely disorienting and genuinely beautiful. Temperatures reach 15-20°C on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen, the Kungsleden hiking trail from Abisko Turiststation is at its best, and hotel prices drop 20-30% across the board. Yellow House Hostel in Central Kiruna runs $70-95/night in summer. The main event on the calendar is Midsommar in late June. book a week ahead at minimum.

Warming Up

Shoulder Season (September-November)

Avg hotel: $90-250/nightCrowds: LowTemp: -5-10°C

September brings the first Aurora sightings of the new season and the autumn colors on Nuolja Mountain above Abisko. October and November are darker and colder, with ice forming on Torneträsk by late November. Booking Tips for Kiruna

Insider tips for booking hotels in Kiruna.

Verify your hotel's address against the city relocation map

Kiruna is physically moving 3 km east toward Luossajärvi. Several guesthouses listed on booking platforms still show the old Bergmästargatan or Föreningsgatan addresses from the pre-relocation city core. Google Maps has not always caught up. Before you book anything in Central Kiruna, cross-check the address with the Kiruna municipality relocation map at kiruna.se. We've heard from travelers who arrived at an address that no longer exists as a functioning street.

Book Aurora activities separately from your hotel. don't rely on hotel packages

Most Kiruna hotels offer Aurora excursion packages, but they're often marked up 30-50% over booking directly with operators. Dog sled tours from outfitters on Campvägen run $120-180/person booked direct. The Aurora Sky Station cable car at Abisko Turiststation costs about $40-50 per person booked in advance. Camp Ripan's in-house tours are the exception. they're competitively priced and the guides are excellent.

The Icehotel warm rooms are not a compromise

A lot of people book the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi and feel guilty about choosing a warm room over an ice room. Don't. The warm rooms at $290-360/night still put you in the most extraordinary hotel in Sweden, with full access to the ice bar, ice church, and sculpture galleries. Ice rooms at -5°C are a bucket-list experience, but sleeping in the cold genuinely disrupts rest. Book ice for one night, warm for the second if you're staying two.

February's Kiruna Sami Market changes everything

The Samemarknad in early February is one of the oldest Sami markets in Sweden, drawing reindeer herders, craftspeople, and visitors to the area around Torget in central Kiruna. Hotel prices jump 15-25% that week, and properties within 5 km of the city center fill months in advance. Either book 4-5 months ahead for that exact week, or plan your trip the week before or after to get market proximity without peak pricing.

Rent Arctic gear locally instead of packing it

Proper Arctic clothing for -25°C conditions is bulky, expensive, and likely worse than what local outfitters stock. Multiple gear rental shops near Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen in central Kiruna rent full Arctic kits (insulated overalls, boots rated to -40°C, mittens, balaclavas) for $50-80 for a multi-day rental. Your airline luggage bill alone justifies this. Ask your hotel to recommend a rental shop. Camp Ripan and Scandic Kiruna both have referral relationships with local outfitters.

Train from Kiruna to Abisko beats a car in winter

The E10 between Kiruna and Abisko is well-maintained, but driving in -25°C conditions on a rented car with questionable winter tire experience is genuinely risky if you're not used to it. The Malmbanan railway from Kiruna Central Station reaches Abisko Turiststation in about 90 minutes, with 3-4 departures daily. It costs around $20-30 per person each way. The train ride along Lake Torneträsk in winter light is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Europe. you're not missing anything by skipping the drive.

Hotels in Kiruna — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Kiruna.

What is the best area to stay in Kiruna?

Central Kiruna is the most practical base, especially around the new city center on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen. You're within 10 minutes walk of the bus terminal, restaurants, and the relocated Kiruna Church. But if you came for the Arctic magic rather than convenience, Jukkasjärvi is 20 minutes east by taxi and puts you right on the Torne River at the Icehotel.

When is the best time to visit Kiruna for the Northern Lights?

September through March gives you the dark skies you need, but the sweet spot is late January to mid-March: temperatures sit around -10 to -20°C, skies are frequently clear, and the snow base is solid for dog sledding and snowmobiling. Abisko National Park, about 95 km west of Kiruna along the E10, has statistically clearer skies than Kiruna town itself thanks to a local microclimate. Book 3-4 months ahead for this window. it sells out fast.

How much does a hotel in Kiruna cost per night?

Budget options like Kiruna Camping & Guesthouse on Campingvägen run $55-80/night. Mid-range picks in Central Kiruna like Hotell Kebne come in at $105-155/night. If you're going full Arctic, the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi starts at $290/night and tops out near $600/night for an art suite.

Is Kiruna worth visiting in summer?

Yes, but for completely different reasons than winter. June and July bring the Midnight Sun, with 24-hour daylight and temperatures reaching a surprisingly warm 15-20°C. Hiking in Abisko National Park along the Kungsleden trail is outstanding, and hotel prices drop 20-30% compared to peak winter season. Camp Ripan on Campvägen is especially good in summer for outdoor activities.

How do I get from Kiruna Airport to the city center?

Kiruna Airport is about 8 km from the city center. The airport bus (Flygbussarna) takes roughly 15 minutes and costs around $8-12. A taxi runs $20-30 and takes the same time. If you're heading directly to Jukkasjärvi, budget for a $40-50 taxi ride or arrange a transfer through your hotel.

What areas of Kiruna should I avoid?

Steer clear of the old downtown area around Gruvstadsparken unless you're deliberately visiting the LKAB mine relocation exhibition. Many buildings there are either decommissioned or mid-demolition as part of the city's historic move project, and a handful of budget guesthouses in that zone list addresses that no longer function properly. Stick to the new city center along Lars Janssonsgatan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen.

Do I need a car to get around Kiruna?

For the city itself, no. Central Kiruna is compact and walkable. most hotels are within 15 minutes walk of each other. But to reach Jukkasjärvi (20 km east), Abisko (95 km west on the E10), or Björkliden (115 km west), you'll need either a rental car or booked transfers. Bus 501 runs between Kiruna and Abisko but runs infrequently in winter. Car rental from Hertz at Kiruna Airport runs about $70-110/day.

Is Kiruna good for families with kids?

Genuinely great, especially in winter. Björkliden Fjällanläggning at Björkliden Ski Resort has a proper family setup with ski school, sledding, and reindeer experiences 115 km from Kiruna center. In Kiruna itself, Camp Ripan on Campvägen runs guided family activities and is about 3 km from the city center by taxi. Budget around $145-210/night for family-appropriate accommodation.

What is the Kiruna city move and does it affect my hotel stay?

LKAB's iron ore mine has caused the ground to shift under the old city, so Kiruna is literally relocating 3 km east toward Luossajärvi lake. The new city center around Kiruna Stadshus on Lars Janssonsgatan is largely operational now. Hotels in Central Kiruna like Kiruna Stadthotel and Scandic Kiruna are in the new zone, so you're fine. Just double-check any address that mentions the Bergmästargatan or Föreningsgatan area. those are in the old city.

Can I see the Northern Lights from my hotel in Kiruna?

From inside Kiruna town, light pollution limits visibility. Camp Ripan on Campvägen, in northern Kiruna, runs guided Aurora tours and has lower light interference than the city center, about 2 km north of Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen. For the best odds, the Aurora Sky Station at Nuolja Mountain above Abisko (accessible by cable car) sits at 900m elevation and is one of the world's most reliable Aurora-viewing spots.

What is the coldest month in Kiruna and how should I prepare?

January is the coldest, regularly hitting -25 to -35°C on Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen in the city center. Frostbite is a real risk if you're underdressed for more than 10 minutes outdoors. Every hotel on this list can advise on gear rental. ask specifically about base layers and proper Arctic boots, not just a ski jacket. Budget $50-80 to rent full Arctic gear if you don't own it.

Are there any luxury hotels in Kiruna worth the price?

Two stand out. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi on Marknadsvägen is the real deal. rooms are literally sculpted from ice and Torne River snow each autumn, and the $290-600/night price includes an experience you can't replicate anywhere else in Europe. Aurora Safari Camp on Råne älv, about 70 km southeast of Kiruna, is smaller and more intimate at $380-700/night, with glass-roofed cabins designed specifically for Aurora watching.
