Where to Stay in Zanzibar City

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Walking the Stone Town Medina

Start at the Old Fort on Mizingani Road at 9am before it gets hot. Walk east on Gizenga Street to the Darajani Market for fresh produce and local life. Then head into the side lanes off Cathedral Street toward Hurumzi. The carved doorways along Hurumzi Street and Tharia Street are the best examples of the style that defines Zanzibar architecture.

Allow 2-3 hours for a proper wander. Get deliberately lost. The medina is small enough that you will always find your way back to the waterfront. Bring water, wear light clothing, and cover shoulders if it is a Friday.

Eating Well in Zanzibar City

Forodhani Night Market is mandatory on your first evening. Get there at 6:30pm for choice, sit on the sea wall, and eat grilled lobster and Zanzibar mix for under $5. The rest of your meals should be at Lukmaan Restaurant on Gizenga Street for lunch (local food, $3-6) and Tower Top at 236 Hurumzi for a special dinner (book 24 hours ahead).

The rooftop restaurant at Emerson Spice serves a fixed menu set dinner at 7pm. It costs $40-50 per person but the food, setting, and views are all extraordinary. Reserve when you check in to the island, not the night before.

Prison Island Day Trip

Prison Island (Changuu Island) is a 20-minute dhow ride from Stone Town, costs $25-35 all in including the island entry fee, and is genuinely worth it. The giant Aldabra tortoises on the island are over 100 years old and will eat from your hand. The reef off the island has good snorkelling.

Book through your hotel or directly at the dhow operators near Forodhani at the waterfront. Avoid anyone selling the trip on Mizingani Road away from the actual dhow dock. The trip runs best in the morning when the water is calmer.

Choosing Your Stone Town Hotel

There are three tiers: The boutique historical houses (236 Hurumzi, Zanzibar Coffee House, Jafferji House) are the most atmospheric at $140-380 per night. The mid-range seafront options (Tembo House, Seyyida Hotel) give better views and a pool at $110-250. Budget guesthouses in the Shangani area cost $45-95 and are clean but basic.

The Park Hyatt at the end of the waterfront is a modern luxury hotel that happens to be in Stone Town but does not feel like it. If you want the Stone Town experience, stay in one of the restored merchant houses. The Park Hyatt is for those who want the name and facilities without the character.

Stone Town After Dark

Forodhani Night Market until 10pm. Then walk to Livingstone Beach Restaurant on the seafront for drinks. The rooftop bar at Emerson Spice closes to non-diners by 9pm but is worth a drink on the way to dinner. The Africa House Hotel on Suicide Alley has a rooftop bar with good sunset views and stays open until midnight.

Avoid the nightclubs advertised near the port. They are aimed at tourists and charge cover fees for mediocre music. The real evening in Zanzibar City is in the lanes, not in clubs.

Stone Town Budget Tips

The Old Fort is free to enter. The House of Wonders costs $3. The Slave Market entry is $3. A full day of Stone Town culture costs under $10 in entry fees. The Darajani Market is free. Forodhani Night Market dinner costs $3-8 all in.

Budget guesthouses in Shangani and Malindi start at $45-65 per night and are clean and reliable. Flamingo Guest House near Darajani is a solid option. Avoid the very cheapest options on Hurumzi Street, which are old and poorly maintained. Anything above $55 per night in the medina is acceptable.

Zanzibar City's best neighborhoods

Zanzibar City is divided between the old Stone Town and the newer Ng'ambo district to the east. Stone Town is where you want to be for atmosphere, history, and the night market. Ng'ambo is quieter and cheaper but lacks character.

Hurumzi and Shangani 4 vetted hotels

The heart of historic Stone Town

Hurumzi and Shangani are the two most historic quarters of Stone Town. Hurumzi has the famous 236 Hurumzi tower hotel and Zanzibar Coffee House on Suicide Alley. Shangani is where most of the foreign consulates were historically located and has a more open feel near the sea.

These are the best areas to be based for the full Stone Town experience. Distances to everything are short. Most lanes here are only wide enough for pedestrians, which keeps the atmosphere intact.

Best areas Hurumzi Street, Tharia Street, Gizenga Street
Price range $45-380/night
Best for Atmosphere, culture, couples, history
Avoid Hurumzi lanes at night with valuables visible
Best months June to October, December to February
Stone Town Seafront 3 vetted hotels

Waterfront views and easy ferry access

The seafront along Mizingani Road and the area near Forodhani Gardens gives direct Indian Ocean views. Tembo House Hotel sits right on the waterfront with a pool. The Park Hyatt Zanzibar is at the far end. This area is slightly less atmospheric than the inner medina but more comfortable.

The ferry terminal to Dar es Salaam and Pemba is 5 minutes walk. The Night Market is right here. Sea breezes make it cooler than the inner lanes in the afternoon.

Best areas Mizingani Road, Forodhani Gardens
Price range $110-620/night
Best for Ocean views, easy access, longer stays
Avoid Rooms facing the street if you need quiet
Best months Year-round
Ng'ambo 2 vetted hotels

Quieter residential district east of the medina

Ng'ambo means 'the other side' in Swahili. It is the newer, less touristy part of Zanzibar City. Garden Lodge Zanzibar is here, offering good value in a quieter residential setting. It is a 10-minute walk or quick taxi to the Stone Town waterfront.

Ng'ambo has less character than Stone Town but lower prices and a more local atmosphere. Good choice if you want to escape tourist pricing but still have easy access to the medina.

Best areas Near the Stone Town boundary
Price range $65-120/night
Best for Budget travellers, longer stays
Avoid If atmosphere and location are your priority
Best months Year-round

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Zanzibar City.

Living History

Stone Town's UNESCO medina is one of the best-preserved historic city centres in Africa. Carved doors date to the 1700s. The Anglican Cathedral sits on the site of East Africa's last slave market. The House of Wonders was the first building in East Africa with electricity.

Night Market and Swahili Food

Forodhani Night Market is one of the best cheap food experiences in the world. Grilled octopus, lobster, and Zanzibar pizza for under $5. Lukmaan Restaurant on Gizenga Street is the best local lunch. Tower Top at 236 Hurumzi is the finest dinner with views.

Rooftop Dinners and Dhow Sunsets

A sunset dhow cruise from the Stone Town waterfront costs $30-50 per couple and is genuinely romantic. The rooftop at Emerson Spice hosts fixed dinner events most evenings. 236 Hurumzi's Tower Top is the most dramatic dining room on the island.

Affordable City Exploration

Stone Town is cheap to explore. Entry fees total under $10. Forodhani Night Market dinner costs $3-8. A dala-dala to anywhere on the island costs under $1. Budget guesthouses start at $45 per night. This is one of the world's great historic cities at very low cost.

History and Giant Tortoises

Children love Prison Island with its century-old giant tortoises. The Old Fort has open space to run around. The Darajani Market is a sensory adventure. Forodhani Night Market at dusk is exciting for older children. Stone Town is manageable with kids for 2 nights.

Gateway to the Beaches

Stone Town itself has no swimmable beach, but it is the gateway to all of Zanzibar's coasts. Dala-dala to Nungwi costs under $1. A day trip to Prison Island includes snorkelling. The seafront dhow harbour is beautiful at sunset even without swimming.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Avoid

Long Rains

Avg hotel: $70-130/nightCrowds: Very lowTemp: 26-30°C

April to May brings heavy daily rains. Forodhani Night Market may not operate. The lanes flood. Ferries can be cancelled. Most beach resorts close. Stone Town guesthouses stay open at very low prices, but the experience is significantly diminished.

Good value

Shoulder

Avg hotel: $100-210/nightCrowds: Low-mediumTemp: 25-30°C

March and November are shoulder months with lower prices and fewer tourists. March can have some rain. November has the short vuli rains. Both are workable windows if you want lower prices and do not mind some weather uncertainty.

Booking Tips for Zanzibar City

Insider tips for booking hotels in Zanzibar City.

Book boutique hotels well in advance

236 Hurumzi, Zanzibar Coffee House, and Jafferji House each have 8-14 rooms. In peak season (July-August, December), they book out 4-6 weeks ahead. Check directly with the hotel for the best rate and to confirm exact availability.

Request a room away from the street

Stone Town lanes can be noisy from early morning prayers at 5am and merchant activity from 7am. Ask for a room on an inner courtyard or upper floor when booking. Properties like Tembo House on the seafront have quieter rooms facing the ocean.

Carry small USD and TZS notes

ATMs in Stone Town work reliably on Kenyatta Road and near Forodhani. Large USD bills ($50 and $100) are sometimes refused. Bring $20 bills or smaller. Night market vendors prefer TZS. Hotels and taxis accept USD. Mix of both currencies is practical.

Navigate the medina by landmarks, not maps

Google Maps is unreliable inside the Stone Town medina. Lanes are not named consistently. Use the Old Fort, House of Wonders, and the Forodhani waterfront as navigation anchors. Most hotel staff will walk you to the next destination for your first time.

Dress code matters in Stone Town

Cover shoulders and knees when walking through the medina and markets. Friday midday around the Ijumaa Mosque on Mkunazini Road requires extra care. Hotels have no dress code on their premises. A light sarong doubles as a beach towel and respectful cover-up.

Agree dhow trip prices before departure

Prison Island and sunset dhow trips from the Stone Town waterfront should cost $25-35 per person. Operators at the dock near Forodhani are legitimate. Touts further from the dock on Mizingani Road inflate prices. Confirm what is included (entry fees, snorkelling gear) before paying.

Hotels in Zanzibar City — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Zanzibar City.

What is the best area to stay in Zanzibar City?

Hurumzi and Shangani quarters in Stone Town. You are within a 10-minute walk of Forodhani Night Market, the Old Fort, and the ferry terminal. Hurumzi has the best boutique hotels including 236 Hurumzi and Zanzibar Coffee House. Shangani is more relaxed and where most of the budget guesthouses cluster.

How much do hotels in Zanzibar City cost?

Flamingo Guest House and similar budget guesthouses start at $45-75 per night. Mid-range boutique hotels like Tembo House on the seafront run $110-195. The top end is Park Hyatt Zanzibar and Jafferji House at $265-620. Prices jump 40-60% during Christmas-New Year week.

Is Stone Town safe to walk at night?

The main lanes around the seafront, Old Fort, and Forodhani Night Market are busy and safe until 10-11pm. Avoid Malawi Road and the bus station area on Creek Road after dark. Petty theft is the main risk. Do not carry expensive items visibly. Most visitors have no problems if they use common sense.

How do I get from Zanzibar Airport to Stone Town?

Daladala bus from outside the airport runs to Darajani bus station in Stone Town for 500 TZS (under $0.25). Takes 20-25 minutes. A taxi costs $10-15 and takes 15 minutes. Most Stone Town hotels charge $10-15 for a pickup. If a tout offers to carry your bag outside the terminal, negotiate before handing it over.

Does Stone Town have a beach?

No swimmable beach within the city itself. The seafront near Forodhani has a narrow strip but it is not for swimming. The closest proper beach is Mbweni, about 5km south, or you take a 40-minute dala-dala to Mangapwani on the northwest coast. Most visitors use Stone Town as a base and do beach excursions.

What is the best cheap food in Zanzibar City?

Forodhani Gardens Night Market on the seafront. Grilled octopus on a stick costs 1,000 TZS ($0.40). Zanzibar pizza (a fried dough pocket with egg and fillings) is around 3,000 TZS ($1.20). The market runs from 6pm until around 10pm. Arrive by 7pm for the freshest fish. This is genuinely the best budget meal on the island.

Is Park Hyatt Zanzibar worth the price?

At $350-620 per night it is the most expensive hotel in Zanzibar City. The pool, beach access, and rooms are excellent. But you pay a massive premium for the brand name. Jafferji House and Spa at $265-380 delivers 90% of the experience at 60% of the price. Only choose the Park Hyatt if you specifically want the rooftop pool and the brand consistency.

How long should I spend in Zanzibar City?

Two nights is the minimum to see the main sights and do a boat trip. Three nights lets you add a spice tour, Prison Island, and a proper wander through the medina. More than four nights in the city itself gets repetitive. Most visitors combine 2-3 nights in Stone Town with 3-5 nights at a beach resort in Nungwi or Paje.

What are the best restaurants in Stone Town?

Tower Top at 236 Hurumzi is the most atmospheric dinner in the city. Emerson Spice serves a set Swahili dinner on its rooftop at 7pm. Both require advance booking. For a more casual dinner, Lukmaan Restaurant on Gizenga Street serves local Zanzibari food at $5-8 per plate and is a favourite with both locals and long-term visitors.

Can I visit Stone Town as a day trip?

Yes, from beach resorts elsewhere on the island. A dala-dala from Nungwi takes 45 minutes and costs under $1. A taxi is $35-40. Most people do a half-day Stone Town tour, hit Forodhani Night Market for dinner, and return to their beach base. If you are staying in Dar es Salaam, the ferry from Dar takes 2 hours and runs twice daily.

What should I not miss in Stone Town?

The Slave Market and Anglican Cathedral on Mkunazini Road is the most important historical site. The House of Wonders on Mizingani Road is the best museum. But the real experience is walking the unnamed lanes between Sokomuhogo Street and Kiponda Street without a map for an hour. That is where the city still lives.

Are there any areas of Zanzibar City to avoid?

The area around Malawi Road and Darajani bus station is chaotic and worth avoiding at night. Creek Road between the bus station and the old market is fine during the day but uncomfortable after dark. Ng'ambo east of Stone Town is safe but has nothing worth seeing unless you are visiting locals. Stick to the Stone Town medina and waterfront.
