Why These Hotels Made Our List

Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.

Seaview Resort Koh Phangan hotel interior
#1

Seaview Resort Koh Phangan

Haad Rin Nok, Haad Rin $45–75/night 7.2/10

This no-frills resort sits right on the eastern end of Haad Rin beach, a five-minute walk from the Full Moon Party grounds. Rooms are basic but clean, with decent air conditioning and a small balcony facing the garden. The outdoor pool is small but functional and rarely crowded outside party weekends. Staff are helpful enough for booking longtail boats and taxis. Good for travelers who want beach access without spending much.

Phangan Bayshore Resort hotel interior
#2

Phangan Bayshore Resort

Thong Sala Pier, Thong Sala $60–95/night 7.6/10

Located directly opposite the main Thong Sala ferry pier, this hotel is the most practical base for island hopping. Rooms are straightforward and clean, with older furniture that has been well maintained. The on-site restaurant serves solid Thai food at fair prices compared to the tourist spots nearby. Easy to grab a songthaew or motorbike taxi right outside the entrance. Not a beach hotel, but the convenience factor is hard to beat at this price.

Haad Yao Bay View Resort hotel interior
#3

Haad Yao Bay View Resort

Haad Yao Beach, Haad Yao $105–160/night 8.1/10

The resort overlooks Haad Yao beach from a hillside position, so most rooms get a genuine sea view from the balcony. The beach below is one of the calmer stretches on the west coast, good for swimming most of the year. Rooms are mid-range Thai style with tiled floors and basic amenities that are clean and reliable. The infinity pool is the standout feature, particularly at sunset. Walk down the hill to find several independent restaurants along the beachfront road.

Hin Kong Beach Resort hotel interior
#4

Hin Kong Beach Resort

Hin Kong Beach, Hin Kong $110–165/night 8/10

Hin Kong is one of the quieter beaches on the western side of the island and this resort sits almost entirely alone on it. The property spreads across a garden with a mix of bungalows and newer block rooms, the bungalows being the better choice. Snorkeling is decent directly off the beach during the dry season. Staff organize yoga and cooking classes a few times per week at no extra charge. It attracts a mellower crowd than the Haad Rin area.

Bottle Beach Resort hotel interior
#5

Bottle Beach Resort

Bottle Beach, Haad Khuat $120–180/night 8.3/10

Bottle Beach on the north coast is accessible only by longtail boat or a steep jungle hike, which keeps it from getting overcrowded. The resort here has well-spaced bungalows sitting close to the sand, and the beach itself is genuinely beautiful with calm clear water. Accommodation is comfortable rather than luxurious, with ceiling fans and minimal decor. The restaurant has a limited menu but the fresh fish dishes are consistently good. Plan on spending at least two full days here because getting in and out takes effort.

Salad Beach Resort hotel interior
#6

Salad Beach Resort

Haad Salad Beach, Haad Salad $140–195/night 8.4/10

Haad Salad is a short, sheltered bay on the northwest coast and this resort sits at its southern end with direct beach access. The bungalows closest to the water are worth paying extra for, the sound of the sea at night is a real plus. Food at the resort restaurant is genuinely good, particularly the seafood grills done on the beach barbecue most evenings. The bay is calm enough for kayaking and the resort provides them free to guests. A couple of dive shops are a short walk away for those wanting to explore the reefs.

Samui Pier Resort Koh Phangan hotel interior
#7

Samui Pier Resort Koh Phangan

Mae Haad Beach, Mae Haad $155–210/night 8.2/10

Mae Haad beach on the northwest tip of the island is famous for the sandbar connecting to the small island of Koh Ma, and this resort is positioned right next to it. The rooms are larger than average for this price range, making them workable for families. Koh Ma itself is a marine reserve with excellent snorkeling and the resort rents equipment at a fair rate. A small convenience store and a couple of independent restaurants are within easy walking distance. The sunsets from the beach here regularly draw people from other parts of the island.

Chaloklum Bay Resort hotel interior
#8

Chaloklum Bay Resort

Chaloklum Fishing Village, Chaloklum $175–230/night 8.7/10

Chaloklum is a working fishing village on the north coast that most tourists bypass on the way to other beaches, which is exactly why staying here is worthwhile. This resort has spacious rooms with polished wood finishes and good-sized balconies looking over the bay. The seafood restaurants in the village are among the best on the island for fresh local fish at honest prices. Dive trips to the nearby Sail Rock depart from the pier here, which is one of the top dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. The overall pace of life in the village is genuinely relaxed.

Srithanu Wellness Retreat hotel interior
#9

Srithanu Wellness Retreat

West Coast Srithanu, Srithanu $260–380/night 9/10

Srithanu on the west coast has become the island's center for yoga and wellness tourism, and this retreat sits at the upper end of that scene. The pool villas are private and well designed with an outdoor shower and a plunge pool separated from neighboring units by thick tropical planting. Daily yoga and meditation classes are included in the room rate, led by instructors with genuine credentials. The restaurant focuses on plant-based food that is actually interesting rather than just being minimal. Walking distance to Samma and Orion healing centers as well as a strong selection of local cafes.

Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas hotel interior
#10

Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas

Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, Thong Nai Pan Noi $380–650/night 9.3/10

Anantara Rasananda occupies a sheltered cove at Thong Nai Pan Noi on the northeast coast, one of the most naturally beautiful beaches on the island. All accommodation is in private pool villas, some positioned directly on the beachfront and others elevated on the hillside with panoramic sea views. Service consistently matches what you would expect from the Anantara brand, with staff anticipating needs before they are stated. The spa is extensive and the treatments use locally sourced ingredients. Getting here from the ferry pier requires a 45-minute drive but the seclusion it provides is a large part of the appeal.

Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Haad Rin: party central, but know what you're signing up for

Haad Rin Nok. Sunrise Beach. is famous for one reason: the Full Moon Party. Every month, 10,000-30,000 people pack the sand for a night that runs until well past dawn. If that's your scene, great. Book close to the beach and budget for the price spike.

But here's the thing most travel sites don't tell you: Haad Rin Nok is actually a decent beach the other 27 days of the month. Quieter, cheaper, and only 8 minutes walk from Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) on the other side of the headland. Seaview Resort sits on Haad Rin Nok itself and makes sense as a budget base outside party weeks. Just don't come here expecting tranquillity. even on quiet nights the generator buzz from the beach bars carries.

The west coast: best bang for your baht on Koh Phangan

Haad Yao, Hin Kong, Haad Salad, Srithanu. these four spots form the spine of Koh Phangan's west coast and cover every budget from $110 to $380/night. The road connecting them from Thong Sala runs about 25 kilometres north and is in decent condition by island standards. Sunsets here are genuine. Not Instagram-filtered, not hyped. Just the actual Gulf of Thailand turning orange every evening.

Haad Yao Beach is where the balance tips in your favour: 400 metres of clean sand, a handful of good restaurants right on the strip, and none of the party infrastructure. Haad Yao Bay View Resort has the best position on that beach. Further north, Haad Salad is more sheltered and draws couples and honeymooners who don't want a scene. We'd pick the west coast over Haad Rin for a first trip every single time.

Getting to Bottle Beach without losing your mind

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) has no road access. That's intentional, and it's why it's still worth visiting. You get there by longtail boat from Chaloklum village on the north coast, a 15-minute ride that costs about $4-6 each way. The boats run roughly 9am-5pm and leave when they have passengers. Don't cut it close to sunset.

Bottle Beach Resort is the main accommodation option on the beach and starts around $120/night. It's basic but the location carries it completely. The beach itself is a curved bay of white sand with no jet skis, no beach clubs, and no vendors. Bring cash. there's one small shop and the ATM situation doesn't exist. Chaloklum village is worth an extra night itself if you want proper restaurants and easier logistics.

Thong Nai Pan: Koh Phangan's most beautiful corner

The northeast coast takes commitment. The road from Ban Tai junction is 12 kilometres of twisting mountain track that takes 45 minutes on a good day. But Thong Nai Pan Noi beach on the other end is the payoff. Pale sand, clear water, and enough trees fringing the bay that it still feels unspoiled even at peak season. Anantara Rasananda is the anchor property here and it's worth every baht of its $380-650/night rate.

The nearby village between the two Thong Nai Pan bays has a few solid restaurants and a 7-Eleven that arrived in 2022, much to the mixed feelings of long-time visitors. Come for at least 3 nights. the travel time makes anything shorter feel rushed. And if the mountain road intimidates you, longtail boats from Haad Rin to Thong Nai Pan run for around $10-15 per person during high season.

Srithanu and the wellness side of Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has quietly built one of Asia's most credible wellness scenes, and most of it lives in a 2-kilometre stretch of Srithanu on the west coast. Agama Yoga, The Yoga Retreat, and Samma Karuna are all within walking distance of each other. This isn't just yoga mats on a beach. there are serious teacher training programmes and multi-week detox retreats operating year-round.

Srithanu Wellness Retreat is the best accommodation in this area by a clear margin. At $260-380/night it sits at the top of the west coast price bracket, but it delivers: proper spa facilities, nutritionally serious restaurant menus, and a level of quiet that's hard to find this close to Thong Sala. The town of Srithanu itself has a farmers' market every Saturday morning on the main road and some of the best vegan food on the island. If wellness is even 30% of your reason for coming, this is where to base yourself.

Koh Phangan in low season: honest advice on the wet months

October is the toughest month. Rainfall peaks, the northeast coast gets choppy, and some smaller resorts actually close. September isn't much better. But here's the practical upside: rates drop 25-40% island-wide, and the west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Yao stays relatively sheltered because the mountains block the worst of it. You can find rooms at Salad Beach Resort for $95-120/night in October that cost $140-195 in February.

Chaloklum on the north coast actually benefits from the monsoon shift. when the southwest monsoon dominates, Chaloklum Bay faces away from the worst weather. We've seen people write off low season entirely and miss out on some genuinely good value. The trick is sticking to the west and north coasts, packing light rain gear, and keeping plans flexible. Boat services to Bottle Beach do stop when seas are rough, so factor that in.

Koh Phangan's best neighborhoods

The west coast is where to start your search. Quieter waters, reliable sunsets, and decent road access from Thong Sala Pier make it the most practical base. The north is worth it if seclusion is the point.

South Coast & Haad Rin 2 vetted hotels

Party beach central with a budget-friendly underside.

Haad Rin is the most famous corner of Koh Phangan and also the noisiest. Haad Rin Nok on the east side of the headland is where the Full Moon Party happens. 10,000+ people on the sand every month. Outside of party week, it's actually a workable base: cheap food, easy transport to Thong Sala (about 20 minutes by songthaew), and a real beach.

Thong Sala Pier is the transport hub for the whole island, sitting on the south coast about 12 kilometres west of Haad Rin. The night market near the pier runs Thursday to Sunday and is worth a stop for food. Phangan Bayshore Resort is a 5-minute walk from the pier and makes solid sense for anyone connecting to other islands.

Avoid Ban Tai, the stretch between Thong Sala and Haad Rin. It collects Full Moon Party overflow, the beach is average, and prices don't reflect the quality. Stick to either Thong Sala itself or proper Haad Rin if you're staying south.

Best areas Haad Rin Nok, Thong Sala Pier
Price range $45-95/night
Best for Budget travellers, party-goers, ferry connections
Avoid Ban Tai. mediocre beach with Full Moon Party noise and no payoff
Best months December-April (avoid Full Moon week unless attending)
West Coast 4 vetted hotels

Sunset views, calm water, and the island's best value spread.

The west coast is where Koh Phangan makes its strongest case for a proper holiday. Hin Kong, Haad Yao, Haad Salad, and Srithanu all sit on the same coastal road running north from Thong Sala, each with a distinct character. Haad Yao is the most social, with beach bars and dive shops. Haad Salad is quieter and pulls more couples. Srithanu is the wellness hub. Hin Kong sits between them all, slightly underrated.

Prices spread wide here: $110/night at Hin Kong Beach Resort to $380/night at Srithanu Wellness Retreat. That range reflects genuinely different experiences, not just room sizes. The west coast road is paved and well-maintained, so getting between these spots takes 10-20 minutes by scooter.

Sunsets on this coast are legitimately spectacular. Every evening the sky over the Gulf of Thailand does something worth sitting still for. That alone makes the west coast worth choosing over the south, assuming you're not here for the party.

Best areas Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Srithanu
Price range $110-380/night
Best for Couples, wellness, snorkelling, sunset chasers
Avoid The inland sections between towns. poorly lit, no amenities
Best months November-April
North Coast 2 vetted hotels

Remote, beautiful, and genuinely off the beaten path.

Chaloklum is the north coast's main settlement and it's a proper working fishing village, not a resort strip. Longtail boats bob in the bay in the morning, the market near the pier sells fresh catch daily, and the pace of life here is nothing like Haad Rin. Chaloklum Bay Resort is the standout property in this area, rated 8.7 and worth every baht at $175-230/night.

Bottle Beach sits further east along the north coast and has no road access at all. The 15-minute longtail from Chaloklum costs $4-6 each way and runs until late afternoon. It's one of the genuinely beautiful beaches left in the Gulf of Thailand. Bottle Beach Resort handles accommodation with rooms from $120/night.

Roads to the north coast are improving but still slow. Count on 30-40 minutes from Thong Sala to Chaloklum by scooter or taxi. The payoff is isolation from the party circuit and access to Sail Rock dive site. a 45-minute speedboat ride from Chaloklum that's one of the best dives in the whole Gulf.

Best areas Chaloklum village, Bottle Beach
Price range $120-230/night
Best for Divers, beach purists, travellers who want genuine quiet
Avoid Expecting nightlife. there isn't any and that's the point
Best months December-April (boat access to Bottle Beach can close Oct-Nov)
Northeast Coast (Thong Nai Pan) 1 vetted hotel

The most beautiful bay on the island, for those willing to make the drive.

Thong Nai Pan Noi is a 45-minute drive from Thong Sala on a road that earns its reputation for being rough. But the bay you arrive at is hard to argue with. Pale sand, calm clear water, and enough space that it never feels crowded. Anantara Rasananda faces directly onto Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach and is the best-rated hotel on our list at 9.3.

The village between Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai has a small cluster of restaurants, a convenience store, and basic supplies. It's functional, not glamorous. For anything more, you're looking at a 45-minute drive back to Thong Sala. Plan grocery runs in advance.

This area rewards travellers who came to disconnect. There's good snorkelling off the headland between the two bays, and a handful of massage shops in the village that cost a fraction of what resort spas charge. Stay at least 3 nights. The drive is too long to justify anything less.

Best areas Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach, Thong Nai Pan village
Price range $380-650/night
Best for Luxury travellers, honeymooners, anyone wanting total seclusion
Avoid Thong Nai Pan Yai if you want upscale. it skews backpacker
Best months January-April (road conditions deteriorate in wet season)
Mae Haad & Northwest 1 vetted hotel

Family-friendly coast with the best sandbar walk in the Gulf.

Mae Haad sits on the northwest tip of the island, about 20 minutes by scooter from Thong Sala. The draw is specific: a sandbar at low tide connects Mae Haad Beach to Koh Ma, a tiny uninhabited island you can walk to in 5 minutes. It's one of the most photographed spots on Koh Phangan and genuinely lives up to the image. Snorkelling around Koh Ma is excellent, with coral in shallow water.

Samui Pier Resort is the main hotel here, rated 8.2 and sitting directly on Mae Haad beach. At $155-210/night it makes sense for families: shallow water, calm bay, and enough infrastructure nearby without being in the middle of a tourist circus. The nearest restaurant strip is about 10 minutes north toward Haad Salad.

The northwest coast is quiet in a way that suits families and couples both. There's a small dive operation based in Mae Haad village that runs daily Koh Ma snorkel trips for around $20-30 per person. Worth doing in the morning before the day-trip boats arrive from Samui.

Best areas Mae Haad Beach, Koh Ma sandbar
Price range $155-210/night
Best for Families, snorkellers, travellers who want calm without going remote
Avoid Weekends in high season. day-trippers from Samui arrive by 10am
Best months November-April (sandbar exposed best Dec-March)

Best Areas by Vibe

Romantic Escape

Haad Salad on the west coast is the pick: 400 metres of quiet beach, minimal crowds, and restaurants like La Playa right on the sand. Salad Beach Resort starts at $140/night and draws couples almost exclusively.

Beach Obsessed

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is the objective answer. no road access, no vendors, just a near-perfect crescent bay reached by longtail from Chaloklum in 15 minutes. Stay at Bottle Beach Resort from $120/night and go early before the day-trippers arrive.

Family Trip

Mae Haad Beach on the northwest coast has shallow, calm water and the famous Koh Ma sandbar walk that kids love. Samui Pier Resort at $155-210/night is the obvious base, with family rooms and direct beach access.

Budget Travel

Haad Rin Nok gives you a real beach and the cheapest beds on the island from $45/night at Seaview Resort, as long as you time your visit outside Full Moon Party week. Thong Sala is the backup if you need easy ferry access.

Wellness & Yoga

Srithanu village on the west coast has more yoga studios per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Southeast Asia, with Agama Yoga and The Yoga Retreat both within walking distance of each other. Srithanu Wellness Retreat at $260-380/night is the premium base for the whole scene.

Food & Local Life

Thong Sala's Thursday-Sunday night market near the pier is the best eating on the island for under $5 a dish: fresh seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice, and local curries all in one strip. Chaloklum fishing village adds a morning market with the best fresh catch on the north coast.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Koh Phangan

When to visit Koh Phangan and what to pay.

Budget Friendly

Low Season (June-October)

Avg hotel: $50-200/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-30°C

The southwest monsoon rolls in from May and peaks in September-October, bringing heavy rain and rough seas on the east and south coasts. Haad Rin and Thong Nai Pan get hit hardest. But the west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Yao stays genuinely sheltered, and prices drop 25-40% across the board. Bottle Beach longtail services stop when seas exceed 1.5 metres, which happens regularly September-October. Come for the savings, stick to the west coast, and keep plans flexible.

Peak

New Year & Songkran (December 25-January 5, April 13-15)

Avg hotel: $180-650/nightCrowds: Very HighTemp: 28-33°C

New Year's Eve on Haad Rin is the biggest party of the year, larger than the Full Moon Party, with the beach closing to non-ticket holders. Hotels within 3 kilometres enforce 5-7 night minimum stays and prices hit annual highs. Book 3-4 months ahead or you'll be looking at $400+/night for properties that go for $120 in October. Songkran in April is less chaotic on Koh Phangan than on the mainland but Thong Sala town still gets a full water fight on April 13. Fun, but messy for electronics.

Booking Tips for Koh Phangan

Insider tips for booking hotels in Koh Phangan.

Book north and west coast hotels 6-8 weeks ahead in January-February

Chaloklum Bay Resort and Anantara Rasananda both fill up in peak weeks faster than their prices suggest. January and February are the best weather months, and the island's most in-demand properties have less than 30 rooms each. Don't rely on last-minute availability for these. the budget places near Haad Rin stay open but the quality spots go fast.

Avoid booking Haad Rin during Full Moon Party week unless you're attending

Every hotel in Haad Rin enforces a 3-night minimum around the party, and prices run 40-80% above normal rates. If you're not attending, book Thong Sala or Haad Yao instead. The Full Moon Party dates are published a year in advance at phangannow.com. cross-reference before you book anything on the south coast.

Pre-arrange transfers from Thong Sala if you're heading north

Songthaews to Chaloklum and Thong Nai Pan run infrequently after 6pm and can leave you stranded with luggage at the pier. Ask your hotel to arrange a private transfer in advance. it costs $15-25 depending on the destination. Chaloklum Bay Resort and Anantara Rasananda both offer this as standard. Don't assume a taxi will materialise at Thong Sala Pier at 9pm on a quiet night.

The road to Thong Nai Pan is rougher than Google Maps suggests

The 12-kilometre mountain road from Ban Tai junction to Thong Nai Pan Noi takes 40-50 minutes and has steep sections with gravel surfaces. On a scooter you need experience. we've seen people with no bike experience end up walking the last 3 kilometres in the dark. Hire a driver from Thong Sala for $25-35 or book a hotel transfer. The road is being improved but don't trust 'paved' descriptions from reviews older than 2023.

Carry cash past Haad Yao. ATMs thin out quickly

Thong Sala has the most ATMs on the island, including Bank of Ayudhya and Bangkok Bank branches near the pier. North of Haad Yao, cash machines become unreliable or disappear entirely. Bottle Beach has none. Chaloklum village has one ATM near the pier that sometimes runs out during busy periods. Withdraw $100-200 extra in Thong Sala before heading north or east.

Low season on the west coast is better than you've heard

Most 'avoid low season' warnings are written for the east and south coasts where the monsoon hits hardest. The west coast from Hin Kong to Haad Salad sits in the rain shadow of the central mountains and stays reasonably dry June-August. Hotels at Salad Beach Resort run $95-130/night in this window versus $140-195 in peak. Four days in June on the west coast with half the tourists is a genuinely good deal if you're flexible on weather.

Hotels in Koh Phangan — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Koh Phangan.

Which area of Koh Phangan is best for first-time visitors?

The west coast is your best starting point. Haad Yao and Srithanu sit about 15-20 minutes by songthaew from Thong Sala Pier, give you calm water for swimming, and avoid the Full Moon Party chaos entirely. Hotels here run $105-230/night, so it's mid-range to upscale. You get the island without the headache.

How far is Koh Phangan from Koh Samui and how do I get there?

The Raja Ferry from Thong Sala Pier takes about 30 minutes from Nathon Pier on Koh Samui and costs around $8-12. Lomprayah high-speed catamarans from Maenam on Samui do the crossing in under 20 minutes. Most hotels on the west coast are 10-15 minutes by taxi from Thong Sala. Book the ferry in advance during Full Moon week. it sells out.

When is the Full Moon Party and how does it affect hotel prices?

Full Moon Parties happen monthly on Haad Rin Nok beach, and prices across the whole island jump 30-60% in the 3 days surrounding it. Haad Rin hotels can triple their rates and enforce minimum 3-night stays. If you're not going, avoid Haad Rin entirely during that window and book Chaloklum or Thong Nai Pan instead. Prices return to normal within 48 hours after the party ends.

What's the cheapest area to stay on Koh Phangan?

Haad Rin has the lowest floor prices, with budget bungalows and resorts starting around $45/night near Haad Rin Nok. Thong Sala town is also affordable and practical, especially if you're using the pier frequently. That said, budget here means tradeoffs: older rooms, shared paths to the beach, and more noise. Spend at least $60-75 if you want a proper bed and working air-con.

Is Koh Phangan good for families with young children?

Yes, but pick the right beach. Mae Haad Beach near the Mae Haad sandbar has flat, shallow water and is ideal for kids under 10. The walk out to Koh Ma island takes about 5 minutes at low tide and is genuinely magic for children. Samui Pier Resort sits right on Mae Haad and has family rooms from $155/night. Avoid Haad Rin and the south coast with young kids.

Haad Rin Nok is only worth booking if you're actually attending the party. otherwise the noise and post-party mess aren't worth it.
