Chaweng Budget Hotel

Chaweng, Koh Samui $55–85/night 7.2/10

Located just off Chaweng Beach Road, this no-frills hotel puts you within walking distance of the main strip, bars, and night market. Rooms are compact and functional, and the pool is small but usable. It is one of the few affordable options that actually keeps the rooms clean and the air conditioning working reliably. Noise from the street can be an issue on weekends, so ask for a room facing the courtyard. Good choice if you plan to spend most of your time out exploring.

Baan Chaweng Beach Resort and Spa

Chaweng, Koh Samui $105–160/night 8.1/10

This mid-size resort fronts the northern end of Chaweng Beach, one of the longest and most swimmable stretches on the island. Rooms are decorated in a simple Thai style and most have partial sea views. The pool area is well maintained and rarely overcrowded compared to nearby larger resorts. Breakfast is included in most rates and covers a solid spread of Thai and Western options. A good balance of location, comfort, and price for Chaweng.

Samui Palm Beach Resort

Maenam, Koh Samui $115–175/night 8.3/10

Maenam is quieter than Chaweng and this resort takes full advantage of that with a calm, low-key atmosphere right on the beach. The rooms are spacious for the price and the garden grounds are well kept. It is about a 10-minute drive from the main Maenam strip but the resort has its own restaurant and bar so you are not stranded. Great option for couples who want a beach holiday without constant noise and foot traffic. The sea here is calm and good for swimming most of the year.

Bandara Resort and Spa

Bophut, Koh Samui $130–195/night 8.5/10

Bandara sits on Bophut Beach just a short walk from Fisherman's Village, which gives guests easy access to one of the most atmospheric spots on the island. The pool villas are excellent value and worth the small upgrade. The spa is genuinely good and not just a hotel add-on. Breakfast by the beach is a highlight, served in a shaded open-air area. The whole property has a relaxed, personal feel that larger chain resorts on the island lack.

#6

Mercure Koh Samui Beach Resort

Chaweng Noi, Koh Samui $145–210/night 8.2/10

This Accor property occupies a quieter stretch of Chaweng Noi Beach, just south of the busier Chaweng main beach. The hillside layout means many rooms have elevated sea views that are hard to beat at this price point. Facilities are reliable and well maintained in the way you expect from an international brand. The beach here is less crowded and the water is clear. A solid choice for travelers who want a known brand with a genuinely good beachfront position.

Samui Resotel Beach Resort hotel interior
#7

Samui Resotel Beach Resort

Choeng Mon, Koh Samui $155–220/night 7.9/10

Choeng Mon is a calm bay in the northeast of the island and this resort is well positioned right on the beach there. The shallow, sheltered water makes it particularly good for families with younger children. Rooms are dated but clean, and the garden bungalow options give families more space than a standard hotel room. The beach itself is one of the more pleasant on Samui, with soft sand and minimal seaweed. Restaurants and shops are a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away.

#8

The Sunset Beach Resort and Spa

Taling Ngam, Koh Samui $175–240/night 8.7/10

Taling Ngam sits on the quieter southwest coast and this resort makes the most of its elevated position above the Gulf of Thailand. Sunset views here are among the best on the island and the infinity pool seems to drop straight into the sea below. The service level is a step above most mid-range options on Samui and the Thai restaurant is worth a meal even if you are not staying. Getting around requires a car or scooter since the area is remote, but that is part of the appeal. Ideal for guests who want to actually relax and disconnect.

Conrad Koh Samui hotel interior
#9

Conrad Koh Samui

Taling Ngam, Koh Samui $420–900/night 9.2/10

Conrad Koh Samui is a cliff-top resort on the southwest coast with private pool villas that look directly out over the Gulf of Thailand. Every villa has its own plunge pool and butler service, and the design blends Thai architecture with modern luxury without feeling overdone. The beach below is accessed by a funicular, which is a small but memorable touch. Dining at Jahn restaurant is exceptional and the wine list is serious. This is one of the best luxury properties in Thailand, full stop.

#10

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

Ang Thong, Koh Samui $650–1 800/night 9.5/10

Perched on the northern tip of the island above a private beach, the Four Seasons Koh Samui is the benchmark for luxury on the island. The pool villas are enormous and the views across the Gulf are unobstructed. Staff anticipate needs before you have to ask, and the overall service consistency is rarely matched anywhere in Thailand. The beach is calm and largely private, and the resort has its own speedboat for excursions to Ang Thong Marine Park. Prices are high but the experience justifies every dollar.

Where to Stay in Koh Samui

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Bophut vs Chaweng: Which side of the island is right for you?

Chaweng is louder, busier, and has more of everything. Bars, restaurants, pharmacies, tour operators. it's all on or just off Beach Road. If you land on the island at 11pm and want food and a cold beer, Chaweng is where you go.

Bophut is different. Fisherman's Village is only about 6 kilometers west of Chaweng, but it feels like another island entirely. Low-key restaurants line the waterfront, there's no nightclub strip, and the Friday Walking Street market draws more locals than the tourist markets near Chaweng. If you're staying for more than 4-5 days, Bophut gives you a better base.

Koh Samui on a budget: how to keep costs under $80/day

Start by staying in Bophut or Maenam instead of Chaweng. the same quality room runs $15-25 cheaper per night away from the main tourist strip. Samui Honey Cottages in Bophut is a solid example, coming in at $45-75/night with beach access included.

For food, skip the restaurants on Chaweng Beach Road and eat at the market near Chaweng Lake or the Lamai night market. full meals for 80-150 THB are easy to find. Rent a scooter for 250 THB a day and you've just eliminated the need for taxis entirely. That combination genuinely keeps you under $80 on most days.

The honest guide to Koh Samui's beaches

Chaweng is the longest and most famous. 7 kilometers of sand. but the central section around Chaweng Beach Road is packed with sunbeds and vendors. Head to the northern end near Chaweng Noi or the stretch in front of Mercure Koh Samui for more breathing room. Lamai, about 10 kilometers south, is shorter but more consistent in quality.

Choeng Mon in the northeast is genuinely beautiful. small, sheltered, and calm. but fills up quickly on weekends. Maenam on the north coast is long, flat, and quiet, and the water stays calm most of the year. Taling Ngam on the west coast is mostly rocky with pockets of sand, but the sunsets there are legitimately some of the best on the island.

Getting to and around Koh Samui without overpaying

Koh Samui Airport (USM) is privately owned by Bangkok Airways, which means they have a near-monopoly on direct flights. expect to pay more than you would at a typical Thai airport. Alternatively, take a train or bus to Surat Thani on the mainland and catch a ferry to Nathon Pier or Don Sak. The ferry crossing takes 1.5-2 hours and costs about 150-200 THB. a fraction of the airfare.

On the island, songthaews run the ring road clockwise and counter-clockwise. They don't always run on a fixed schedule, but you can flag one down on Route 4169 (the main ring road) easily during daylight hours. Grab apps like Grab Thailand work on the island too and give you upfront pricing, which cuts out the taxi negotiation entirely.

Day trips worth doing from Koh Samui

Ang Thong National Marine Park is the one day trip you shouldn't skip. It's a 42-island archipelago about 30 kilometers northwest of Koh Samui, and the snorkeling around Ko Mae Ko's emerald lagoon is world-class. Most tour boats depart from Bophut Pier or Nathon Pier around 8am and return by 5pm, costing $60-80 per person including lunch.

Koh Tao is further north. about 2 hours by high-speed catamaran from Maenam Pier. and is one of the best dive spots in Southeast Asia. PADI open water courses run $300-400 on Koh Tao, which is cheaper than almost anywhere else in the world for the same certification. Day trip diving is also easy to arrange from any dive shop on Koh Samui's main beaches.

When NOT to book certain areas of Koh Samui

Avoid Chaweng Beach Road hotels during Songkran (Thai New Year, April 13-15). The water festival turns the entire strip into a giant water fight from dawn to dusk. which is brilliant if you want that, exhausting if you don't. If you're visiting during Songkran and prefer a quieter experience, stay in Bophut or Taling Ngam instead.

The October-November northeast monsoon hits the east coast hardest. Chaweng and Lamai can see 4-6 days of continuous rain in a bad week, and some budget guesthouses near Lamai Roundabout have flooding issues that never show up in their photos. West coast properties like those in Taling Ngam are significantly less affected during this window. that's not a coincidence, it's geography.

Koh Samui's best neighborhoods

Chaweng gets the most traffic but Bophut and Taling Ngam are where the better stays actually are. If you want nightlife in walking distance, Chaweng wins. If you want a beach to yourself and a decent sunrise, head north or west.

Chaweng & Chaweng Noi 2 vetted hotels

The island's main event. loud, central, and never boring.

Chaweng Beach Road is Koh Samui's spine. It's where you'll find the widest selection of restaurants, the most reliable transport links, and the most competitive hotel pricing on the island. It's also the noisiest, and the strip between Chaweng Shopping Mall and the Green Mango Club district doesn't really quiet down until 3am.

Chaweng Noi sits just south of the main beach and is a noticeably different experience. It's quieter, the beach is slightly less crowded, and you're still only 10 minutes on a scooter from the main action. Mercure Koh Samui is positioned here and it's genuinely one of the better locations on the island for that reason.

For anyone who needs to be near the action. or is flying in and out on Bangkok Airways at odd hours. this region makes logistical sense. The airport is barely 5 minutes from north Chaweng, which matters more than people realize when you have an early departure.

Best areas Chaweng Noi, North Chaweng
Price range $55-210/night
Best for First-timers, nightlife, convenience
Avoid Central Chaweng Beach Road if sleep matters to you
Best months December-April
Bophut & Fisherman's Village 2 vetted hotels

Quiet beach, great food, and the island's most charming strip.

Bophut is where travelers who've been to Koh Samui before tend to return. Fisherman's Village is a short row of converted shophouses along the waterfront. now home to some of the best independent restaurants on the island, a weekly Friday Walking Street market, and nowhere near the chaos of Chaweng.

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) is a 5-minute drive east and worth the trip even if you're not big on temples. Bophut Pier is the main departure point for speed boats to Ang Thong and ferries north to Koh Tao, which makes it surprisingly well-connected for such a relaxed area.

Hotels here range from genuine budget cottages to full-service spa resorts. Samui Honey Cottages and Bandara Resort are both in this stretch, sitting at opposite ends of the price spectrum. $45 versus $130+ per night. and both are solid for what they charge.

Best areas Fisherman's Village beachfront, Bophut Pier vicinity
Price range $45-195/night
Best for Couples, repeat visitors, foodies
Avoid Far-inland Bophut streets away from the waterfront
Best months December-May
Maenam & Choeng Mon 2 vetted hotels

The north coast's calmer, family-friendly stretch.

Maenam Beach runs along the north coast and is one of the longest and most peaceful beaches on the island. It's popular with long-stay travelers and expats partly because it's cheaper than Chaweng and partly because the beach is consistently clean. Maenam Pier is the main jump-off for ferries to Koh Phangan, which depart several times daily.

Choeng Mon is a small, almost circular bay on the northeast tip, sheltered from the open Gulf. The water here is noticeably calmer than Chaweng, the beach is walkable in 20 minutes end-to-end, and there are enough restaurants and bars nearby without any of the late-night noise. Samui Resotel sits right on this bay.

This region works particularly well for families and anyone who prefers a slower pace. Prices are generally 10-25% lower than equivalent properties in Chaweng, and you're still only 15-20 minutes from the airport and all of Chaweng's facilities by road.

Best areas Choeng Mon Bay, Maenam beachfront
Price range $115-220/night
Best for Families, long-stay travelers, divers
Avoid Inland Maenam streets more than 500m from the beach
Best months November-May
Taling Ngam & Ang Thong (West & Northeast) 2 vetted hotels

Sunset views, clifftop villas, and the island's two finest luxury properties.

Taling Ngam on the southwest coast is where serious luxury lives on Koh Samui. Conrad Koh Samui and The Sunset Beach Resort are both positioned here, taking advantage of the elevated terrain and unobstructed views across the Gulf toward the Ang Thong archipelago. Sunsets from this stretch are legitimately world-class.

Ang Thong in the northeast is Four Seasons territory. It's remote by Koh Samui standards. about 25 minutes from Chaweng by road. but the property essentially creates its own world on a hillside above the sea. You're paying $650-1,800/night for something that bears no resemblance to a typical beach resort.

Neither region is convenient for getting around the island without a car or driver. That's the honest trade-off. But if your goal is seclusion, private pools, and food you don't need to leave the property for, these are the best options anywhere in the Gulf of Thailand.

Best areas Taling Ngam cliffside, Ang Thong northeast coast
Price range $175-1,800/night
Best for Honeymoons, luxury travelers, complete seclusion
Avoid Booking here if you need to commute to Chaweng daily
Best months December-April

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Koh Samui.

Romantic Escape

Taling Ngam on the west coast is the best call for couples. Clifftop pools, sunset views, and no party crowds. Bandara Resort in Bophut is the more accessible alternative if Taling Ngam feels too remote.

Culture & Temples

Base yourself in Bophut for easy access to Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha) and Wat Plai Laem, both within 10 minutes by scooter. The Friday night Walking Street market along the Fisherman's Village waterfront is the most authentic cultural experience on the island.

Family Holiday

Choeng Mon Bay is the right choice. the water is calm enough for young kids, there are no loud beach clubs, and Samui Resotel is purpose-built with families in mind. You're also 15 minutes from the airport, which matters with tired children.

Budget Travel

Bophut gives you beach access, good food, and transport links without Chaweng's price premium. Samui Honey Cottages starts at $45/night and is steps from the Fisherman's Village strip. hard to beat that combination anywhere on the island.

Beach & Water Sports

North Chaweng Beach near Chaweng Lake is the best stretch for water sports. jet skis, parasailing, and paddleboard rentals are all available by 9am. For cleaner snorkeling, Choeng Mon Bay beats the main Chaweng stretch by a mile.

Food & Nightlife

Chaweng Beach Road has the highest concentration of restaurants, beach clubs, and bars on the island. over 200 within walking distance of each other. For something more refined, the independent restaurants along Fisherman's Village in Bophut are consistently better quality.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Koh Samui

When to visit Koh Samui and what to pay.

Budget Friendly

Green Season (Jun-Sep)

Avg hotel: $55-130/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 27-32°C

June through September sees occasional rain but nothing like the true monsoon months. The east coast beaches are usually fine, and you'll find budget rooms in Bophut and Maenam for $45-60/night. roughly half the peak season rate. It's a reasonable time to visit if you don't mind the odd afternoon storm and want the island at a slower pace.

Budget Friendly

Monsoon (Oct-Nov)

Avg hotel: $40-100/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 25-29°C

October and November are when Koh Samui's northeast monsoon hits hardest, particularly along Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast. Some resorts partially close, and beach conditions can be rough for days at a time. Prices bottom out. you can find decent rooms from $40-60/night. but the west coast properties in Taling Ngam and Nathon are actually calmer during this period if you're set on visiting.

Booking Tips for Koh Samui

Insider tips for booking hotels in Koh Samui.

Don't let the beachfront label fool you

Plenty of hotels on Koh Samui describe themselves as 'beachfront' when they're actually across a road from the beach, separated by a concrete wall, or on a stretch that's too rocky to swim from. Check Google Street View for the hotel's street address before booking. Route 4169 runs right along the Chaweng coast, and some hotels are on the wrong side of it.

Book during Loy Krathong with extra lead time

Loy Krathong (November full moon) and the Full Moon Party on nearby Koh Phangan both drive a surge in demand for Koh Samui accommodation. The Full Moon Party alone draws 10,000-20,000 people monthly, many of whom stay on Samui and take the ferry across. If your travel dates overlap with a full moon, book 6-8 weeks ahead or expect to pay 30-40% above normal rates.

Negotiate on stays of 5+ nights at smaller resorts

The chain hotels won't budge, but independently owned resorts in Bophut and Maenam will often drop their rate by 10-15% for stays of 5 nights or more. especially outside of peak season. Call the property directly rather than booking through an OTA. You'd be surprised how often a 5-minute phone call saves you $50-80 over a week-long stay.

The airport taxi hustle is real. here's the workaround

Fixed-rate airport taxis at Koh Samui Airport (USM) charge 400-700 THB for most destinations, but songthaews on the Ring Road just outside the airport boundary charge 50-100 THB for the same trip. Walk 5 minutes to the main road and flag one down. It works for Chaweng, Bophut, and Maenam without any drama.

West coast hotels book out fast in December despite the distance

Conrad Koh Samui and The Sunset Beach Resort are 25-30 minutes from Chaweng by car, but they still sell out in December before most Chaweng hotels. The clientele staying there specifically wants the seclusion and sunset views and plans well ahead. If Taling Ngam is on your radar for the festive period, lock it in by October at the latest.

Check which beach activities are available before choosing a quiet area

Choeng Mon and Maenam are peaceful and genuinely beautiful, but they have minimal water sports infrastructure compared to Chaweng. If your group wants jet skis, parasailing, or a banana boat, you're looking at a 15-20 minute scooter ride to the Chaweng Beach Road area. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's worth knowing before you commit to a north coast property for 7 nights.

Hotels in Koh Samui — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Koh Samui.

Which area of Koh Samui is best for first-timers?

Chaweng is the obvious starting point. It's central, packed with restaurants on Beach Road, and most day trips to Ang Thong Marine Park depart from Chaweng or Bophut piers. That said, if noise is a concern, Chaweng Noi sits just south and is noticeably quieter. you're still 10 minutes by songthaew from the main strip.

What's the cheapest time to visit Koh Samui?

October and November are the cheapest months on paper, with budget rooms dropping to $30-45/night. The catch: Koh Samui's east coast gets hammered by rain during this window, which is the opposite of the rest of Thailand. If you want low prices without the monsoon, try late January through early March. crowds are thin and temperatures sit around 27-29°C.

Is Chaweng Beach worth it or too touristy?

It depends on what you're after. Chaweng Beach Road is wall-to-wall bars, shops, and tour touts. that's just the reality. The beach itself, particularly the northern end near Chaweng Lake, is cleaner and less crowded than the central stretch. For peace and quiet, Choeng Mon or Maenam are better bets, and they're only 15-20 minutes north by road.

How do I get around Koh Samui on a budget?

Songthaews (shared red pickup trucks) run fixed routes around the island's ring road for roughly 50-100 THB per ride. They're slow but they work. Renting a scooter from shops around Chaweng or Lamai costs about 200-300 THB per day and is far more flexible. Taxis exist but they're unmetered. agree on a price before you get in, and expect 300-600 THB for cross-island trips.

Which beach is best for families with kids?

Choeng Mon Beach on the northeast tip is consistently the best call for families. The water is shallow and calm, there are no jet ski operators hassling you every 5 minutes, and it's one of the cleanest beaches on the island. Samui Resotel sits right on this stretch and is purpose-built for families, with the beach just 2 minutes walk from reception.

Are there good hotels near Fisherman's Village in Bophut?

Yes, and Bophut is one of the most underrated areas on the island. Fisherman's Village Walking Street runs every Friday night with local food stalls and craft vendors along the Bophut beachfront. Bandara Resort and Samui Honey Cottages are both in this area, with prices ranging from $45 to $195/night depending on the property and season.

What's the difference between Koh Samui's west coast and east coast?

The east coast. Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon. faces the Gulf of Thailand and gets most of the tourist infrastructure, beach clubs, and nightlife. The west coast, particularly Taling Ngam, is far quieter, with spectacular sunsets and a fraction of the foot traffic. The tradeoff is that Taling Ngam is about 30 minutes by road from Chaweng, so you're more isolated out there.

Is it safe to swim at all beaches in Koh Samui?

Most beaches are safe for swimming between December and September. The exception is October-November, when northeast monsoon swells make Chaweng and Lamai rough and occasionally dangerous. During these months, the west coast beaches around Taling Ngam and Nathon are actually calmer. Always check for red flags posted by resort staff before entering.

How much should I budget per day in Koh Samui?

On a tight budget, $60-80/day covers a basic hotel, meals at local spots like those along the Chaweng Lake Road area, and songthaew transport. Mid-range travelers spending $150-200/day can eat well, take a day trip to Ang Thong Marine Park (around $60-80 per person), and stay somewhere comfortable. Luxury travelers at top-end resorts should budget $500+ per day without blinking.

When is Koh Samui's peak season?

December through March is peak season. Prices spike by 40-60% compared to low season, and Chaweng Beach fills up fast around the Christmas and New Year's period. Book at least 2-3 months ahead if you're traveling in late December. The shoulder months of April and May offer near-peak weather with noticeably lower prices. a genuinely good window.

Are there luxury hotels outside of Chaweng?

The two best luxury properties on the island are actually on the west and north coasts. Conrad Koh Samui and The Sunset Beach Resort are both in Taling Ngam, offering clifftop villas and private pools with sunset views that Chaweng simply can't match. Four Seasons Koh Samui is up on the northeast coast near Ang Thong, in a category of its own at $650-1,800/night.

What should I know about hotel check-in customs in Koh Samui?

Most resorts have a standard 2pm check-in and 12pm checkout. Some mid-range properties in Chaweng and Bophut will hold luggage and let you use the pool if you arrive early. just ask nicely at reception. It's also worth knowing that many smaller resorts don't have 24-hour front desks, so if your ferry from Surat Thani docks late at night, call ahead to confirm someone will be there.
