Where to Stay in Krabi

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First timer's guide to Krabi

Start in Ao Nang. It's not the quietest spot in Krabi, but it's the most connected. longtail boats to Railay leave from the northern end of Ao Nang Beach Road every 15 minutes, and every tour operator on the strip can book you onto a Four Islands day trip for $25-35. Give yourself 2 nights here to get your bearings.

On day 3, take the longtail to Railay and spend the morning at Phra Nang Cave Beach before the day-trippers arrive. Get there before 9am. The cave itself is a 10-minute walk from Railay East pier through a jungle path, and it's one of the genuinely stunning spots in Southeast Asia. If you're staying longer than 5 days, consider a night or two in Krabi Town. the riverside at Thanon Khong Kha is a different pace entirely.

Ao Nang vs Klong Muang: which should you choose?

Ao Nang is louder, cheaper, and better connected. Hotels run $45-200/night, restaurants are everywhere on Ao Nang Beach Road, and you're 15 minutes by longtail from Railay. It suits solo travelers, families, and anyone who likes having options within walking distance. The trade-off is noise. the strip gets busy until midnight.

Klong Muang is 25 minutes north on Route 4034 and feels like a different destination. The beach here is longer and less crowded, the resorts start at $170/night and cap out at $1,500, and you'll need wheels to get anywhere. It's worth it for couples on a splurge or anyone who needs actual quiet. We'd pick Klong Muang for 4 nights or more. any shorter and you'll spend half your trip in a taxi.

Getting around Krabi without getting ripped off

Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run between Krabi Town's Maharat Road and Ao Nang for about $1.50. They're slow and stop running around 6pm, but for daytime moves they're unbeatable. Taxis from Ao Nang to Klong Muang should cost $8-12. agree on the price before you get in, because meters are rare outside Krabi Town.

Longtail boats from Ao Nang pier to Railay cost around $3 per person during the day and $5-6 after dark. The boats only leave when full, usually 6-8 people. Don't let anyone quote you a private charter price of $30+ for a 15-minute crossing unless you genuinely want the boat to yourself. Scooter rental near the Ao Nang roundabout runs $8-12/day and is the smartest option for exploring the back roads around Nopparat Thara.

When to book (and when to wait)

Book by October for December-January travel. That stretch, especially the week between Christmas and New Year, is when Railay and Ao Nang Cliff resorts sell out completely. Rates at Aonang Cliff Beach Resort go from $120 in May to $200+ in late December. If you're flexible, late January and February offer near-identical weather with 15-25% lower rates than the Christmas peak.

March and April are underrated. Temps hit 33-35°C but the sea stays clear, Phi Phi day trips still run daily, and hotels in Klong Muang drop back to shoulder pricing. Avoid booking Klong Muang or Railay for the Thai New Year (Songkran, April 13-15) unless you enjoy water fights on a longtail boat. It's fun, but prices spike and everything books out a month in advance.

How to find the right room (not just the right hotel)

In Ao Nang, room position matters more than most people realise. At Aonang Cliff Beach Resort, the cliff-facing rooms above floor 3 have unobstructed views of the Andaman. rooms on the road side face a car park. At Holiday Inn Ao Nang Center, pool-access rooms are worth the $20-30 premium if you're traveling with kids. Always request high floor, sea side, in writing when booking.

For Railay hotels, ask specifically whether the room faces Railay East or Railay West. Railay East is the functional side: longtail pier, restaurants, mangrove views. Railay West faces the actual beach, the limestone cliffs, the postcard. It's an 8-minute walk between the two sides, but the room price difference can be $50-80/night. Know which one you're paying for.

Krabi for couples: where to actually stay

Skip the Ao Nang strip if romance is the goal. It's great for convenience but not exactly candlelit. Head to Railay Beach Club on Railay East for direct access to arguably the most dramatic beach scenery in Thailand at $135-210/night. Or go further north to Nakamanda Resort on Klong Muang Beach: private pool villas, a quiet stretch of sand, and a spa that doesn't feel like a tourist conveyor belt.

If budget is no concern, Phulay Bay at Klong Muang Bay is one of the best resort experiences in Southeast Asia. Rates start at $600/night, but the pavilion villas with private infinity pools over the Andaman are genuinely worth it for a honeymoon or anniversary. Book the Romantic Dinner on the beach when you arrive. it sells out 3-4 days in advance, and the team at Phulay Bay are excellent at quiet, fuss-free service.

Krabi's best neighborhoods

Ao Nang is where most people land, but it's not always the right call. If you want real seclusion, Klong Muang is where we'd send you first.

Ao Nang 4 vetted hotels

The beating heart of Krabi's tourist scene. loud, convenient, and hard to beat as a base.

Ao Nang Beach Road is where most of Krabi's action happens. Tour operators, seafood restaurants, massage shops, and longtail boat piers all stack up along a 1.5km strip. It's not quiet, but everything you need is within 10 minutes on foot. The beach itself is decent. not spectacular. but it's the launchpad for Railay, Phi Phi, and the Four Islands, which is the real reason to be here.

Hotels range from the budget-friendly Gluay Hostel on Ao Nang Beach Road at $45-75/night all the way to Holiday Inn Ao Nang Center at $150-230. Mid-range is where you get the best value: Ban Sainai Resort on Sainai Road sits back from the strip and is quieter than most, while Aonang Cliff Beach Resort gives you dramatic cliff views from $120/night. The cliff area is a 10-minute walk from the beach along a winding path.

Avoid rooms directly above the strip between Soi 5 and Soi 8 if noise bothers you. That stretch is loud until midnight. The Nopparat Thara end of Ao Nang, about 2km west of the main beach, is calmer and still only $5 by songthaew to the pier. It's the move if you want Ao Nang prices without Ao Nang noise.

Best areas Ao Nang Beach Road, Ao Nang Cliff, Sainai
Price range $45-230/night
Best for First timers, island hoppers, budget travelers, families
Avoid Rooms above Soi 5-8 strip if noise is an issue
Best months November-April
Klong Muang 2 vetted hotels

Krabi's quieter, more grown-up coastline. longer beach, fewer crowds, higher price tags.

Klong Muang sits about 25-30 minutes north of Ao Nang on Route 4034. The beach here stretches for nearly 3km and rarely gets crowded, even in peak season. There are no longtail piers or tour desks on the beach, which is exactly the point. You're trading convenience for calm, and for the right traveler, it's a very good trade.

This is where Krabi's best resorts live. Nakamanda at Klong Muang Beach runs $170-260/night for pool villas set in tropical gardens. Tubkaak Boutique Resort on Tubkaak Beach, our highest-rated pick outside the luxury tier at 9.0, offers a level of service and design that genuinely surprises people. And Phulay Bay at Klong Muang Bay is, simply, one of the finest resort experiences in Thailand at any price.

You need transport here. The nearest 7-Eleven is a 10-minute scooter ride, and evening restaurant options outside the resorts are limited to a handful of local spots near Ban Klong Muang village. If you're a first-time Krabi visitor who wants to explore, stay in Ao Nang first. Klong Muang rewards people who've done Krabi before and know they want to slow down.

Best areas Klong Muang Beach, Tubkaak Beach
Price range $170-1,500/night
Best for Couples, luxury travelers, repeat visitors who want quiet
Avoid If you want nightlife or easy island access. it's not that
Best months November-April
Railay 2 vetted hotels

Car-free, cliff-ringed, and genuinely extraordinary. if you can handle the boat logistics.

Railay is accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang pier (15 minutes, $3 per person) or from Krabi Town's Chao Fah pier. There are no roads, no 7-Elevens, and no motorbikes. What there is: Phra Nang Cave Beach, which is legitimately one of the most beautiful beaches in Southeast Asia, and limestone cliffs that draw rock climbers from around the world to routes on the Thaiwand Wall.

Railay East is where hotels and restaurants cluster: it faces mangroves and is functional rather than beautiful. Railay West faces the beach and is where you want to spend your days, an 8-minute walk from East. Railay Beach Club on Railay East runs $135-210/night and offers real value for this location. Rayavadee on the Phra Nang Peninsula is in a different universe at $450-900/night, but it's the only hotel with garden pavilions a 2-minute walk from Phra Nang Cave Beach.

Stay at least 2 nights or it's not worth the boat logistics. And yes, the last longtail back to Ao Nang leaves Railay pier around 6pm in low season. after that you're paying $15-20 for a private charter or you're staying put. Budget travelers who didn't plan this will tell you about it at length.

Best areas Railay West (beach side), Phra Nang Peninsula
Price range $135-900/night
Best for Couples, rock climbers, beach lovers, splurge stays
Avoid Families with young children during rough swell. boat boarding is tricky
Best months November-April
Krabi Town 1 vetted hotel

Real Thai town energy, a great riverside market, and the most practical transport hub in the province.

Most tourists skip Krabi Town entirely, which is a mistake. The Thanon Khong Kha riverside road has one of the best night markets in southern Thailand on Friday-Sunday evenings. Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple) is a 30-minute walk or short taxi from Chao Fah Road, and the 1,237 steps to the summit give you a view across the entire Krabi coastline. This is a real working Thai town, not a resort strip.

Krabi Resort on Chao Fah Road is the standout hotel here. It sits on the Krabi River estuary, 8 minutes walk from the ferry pier, and it's the most logical base if you're catching early morning boats to Ko Lanta or Ko Phi Phi. At $100-160/night, it's one of the better-value options in the province for what you actually get.

Krabi Town is not a beach destination. The town itself is on a river, not the sea, and the nearest beach is a 25-minute drive. Stay here if you love markets, temples, kayaking in Ao Thalane (30 minutes north on Route 4), and don't need sand outside your window. It's also 15-20% cheaper across the board than equivalent hotels in Ao Nang.

Best areas Chao Fah Road, Thanon Khong Kha riverside
Price range $40-160/night
Best for Culture seekers, budget travelers, those using ferry connections
Avoid If beach access is your top priority. you'll need a 25-min taxi every day
Best months November-March

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Krabi.

Romantic

Klong Muang Beach is where Krabi gets genuinely intimate. Nakamanda and Phulay Bay both offer private pool villas with Andaman sunset views, and the beach rarely has more than a dozen people on it.

Culture

Krabi Town's Thanon Khong Kha riverside is the cultural heart of the province. The Friday-Sunday night market, Wat Tham Sua temple, and Ao Thalane kayaking are all within 30 minutes of Chao Fah Road.

Family

Ao Nang Center is the family hub, anchored by Holiday Inn with its kids' club and multiple pools, 5 minutes flat walk to the beach. Everything is reachable on foot, no boats required.

Budget

Ao Nang Beach Road has the best budget options without sacrificing location. The Gluay Hostel at $45-75/night gives you resort facilities at a price you'd normally associate with a fan room.

Beach

Railay's Phra Nang Cave Beach is the best beach in Krabi, full stop. You need a longtail to reach it, but the limestone cliffs dropping straight into turquoise water make every other beach look ordinary.

Foodie

Krabi Town's riverside market on Thanon Khong Kha (Friday-Sunday) is the real deal: grilled river prawns, kanom jeen noodles, and fresh coconut pancakes for $1-3 a plate.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Krabi

When to visit Krabi and what to pay.

Peak

Peak Season (Dec-Jan)

Avg hotel: $120-900/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 27-32°C

This is when everyone shows up. Christmas week and New Year's push rates at Aonang Cliff Beach Resort and Rayavadee to their ceilings, and Railay accommodations fill 3-4 weeks in advance. The weather is near-perfect: dry, sunny, calm seas, and water clarity at its best for snorkeling around Ko Poda. If you're coming in December, book by October. not a suggestion.

Budget Friendly

Low Season (May-Oct)

Avg hotel: $45-400/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 26-32°C

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain from May through October, and seas can be rough enough to cancel longtail services to Railay for days at a time. Some smaller resorts on Klong Muang close entirely in September and October. That said, budget hotels in Ao Nang and Krabi Town drop to their floor prices. you can get rooms at Ban Sainai Resort for $60-70/night versus $90-95 in high season. Just don't plan your whole trip around beach days.

Warming Up

Shoulder Season (Nov)

Avg hotel: $60-500/nightCrowds: Low-ModerateTemp: 27-31°C

November is when Krabi wakes back up. The rain eases by mid-November, longtails restart regular services to Railay, and hotels are filling from the 15th onward. Prices at the start of November sit close to low-season levels. $60-120/night across most Ao Nang properties. then climb sharply by the last week. Book mid-November to early December for the best combination of good weather and reasonable rates.

Booking Tips for Krabi

Insider tips for booking hotels in Krabi.

Book Railay hotels by October for peak season

Railay has fewer than 15 hotels on the whole peninsula, and the good ones at $135-450/night disappear fast. Rayavadee on Phra Nang Peninsula and Railay Beach Club on Railay East both sell out for Christmas and New Year's by late October. If you see availability in late November for December dates, book it. That window closes quickly.

Ask for room position, not just room type

At Aonang Cliff Beach Resort, cliff-view rooms above floor 3 face the Andaman. Road-side rooms face a car park. At Railay Beach Club, ask for a room on the Railay West side. it adds $30-50 but saves you the 8-minute walk to the beach every morning. Always email the hotel directly after booking and request your preferred orientation in writing.

Don't assume 'beachfront' means what you think

In Ao Nang specifically, several hotels on Ao Nang Beach Road use 'beachfront' loosely to mean they're on the road that runs alongside the beach. not on the sand. Check the map pin on any listing and measure the actual distance to the waterline. Anything over 200 metres is a walk, not a step outside. This is one of the most common complaints in Ao Nang reviews.

Use songthaews for daytime moves between Krabi Town and Ao Nang

Songthaews run between Maharat Soi 4 in Krabi Town and Ao Nang for about $1.50 per person, taking 30-35 minutes. They run from around 7am to 6pm. After 6pm you're looking at a taxi for $8-12. If you're based in Ao Nang and want to visit the Thanon Khong Kha riverside night market on a Friday or Saturday, take the last songthaew at 5:30pm and taxi back.

Pack reef shoes for Railay East pier

At low tide, the longtail drop-off at Railay East involves wading through 30-40cm of water over sharp rocks. Sandals don't cut it, and you'll regret flip-flops immediately. Cheap reef shoes cost $4-6 at any shop on Ao Nang Beach Road and are worth every baht. This is especially true if you're arriving at Railay with luggage. the pier has no dock, just a rope and a wing.

Klong Muang luxury is worth the premium for longer stays

Tubkaak Boutique Resort and Phulay Bay both offer rates that look steep until you factor in what's included. Phulay Bay's $600-1,500/night villa rate covers airport transfers, non-motorised water sports, and daily excursions. Tubkaak at $190-280/night often includes breakfast and resort activities that would cost $40-60 extra elsewhere. Run the real numbers before writing off Klong Muang as too expensive.

Hotels in Krabi — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Krabi.

Which area of Krabi is best to stay in?

It depends on what you want, but Ao Nang is the most practical base. You're 5 minutes walk from the longtail pier to Railay, with restaurants and tour operators on Ao Nang Beach Road. If you prefer quiet, Klong Muang Beach is 30 minutes north of Ao Nang and far less crowded. Krabi Town suits budget travelers and those catching early ferries from the Chao Fah pier.

What's the best time of year to visit Krabi?

November through April is the dry season, with temperatures around 28-32°C and almost no rain. December and January are peak weeks. hotel prices jump 40-60% and Railay fills up fast. March and April are the sweet spot: still dry, slightly fewer tourists, and rates at Klong Muang resorts drop back to $170-220/night. Avoid May through October if you hate grey skies and rough seas.

How do you get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang?

A shared minivan from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang costs around $5-8 per person and takes 40-50 minutes. A private taxi runs $15-20. Don't use the metered taxis parked right outside arrivals. they'll quote you $30+ before you've picked up your bag. Pre-book through your hotel or use the official AOT transport desk inside the terminal.

Is Railay Beach worth staying on?

Yes, but only if you're staying at least 2 nights. You reach Railay by longtail from Ao Nang (15 minutes, around $3 per person) and there are no roads in or out. The beach itself, especially Phra Nang Cave Beach, is genuinely spectacular. Just know that Railay East, where most hotels are, faces mangroves. not the postcard view you're expecting.

What's the difference between Ao Nang and Klong Muang?

Ao Nang is lively, packed with tour desks, restaurants, and a beach that gets busy by 9am. Klong Muang, about 25 minutes north on Route 4034, is calmer and less developed. better for couples and anyone who wants to hear the ocean over a loudspeaker. Hotels in Klong Muang run $170-280/night versus $60-200 in Ao Nang. You'll need a scooter or taxi to get anywhere from Klong Muang.

Are there budget hotels worth staying at in Krabi?

Yes, and they're better than you'd expect. The Gluay Hostel on Ao Nang Beach Road gives you a real resort feel for $45-75/night, which is rare at that price point in Ao Nang. Krabi Town also has solid guesthouses near Chao Fah Road for under $50. Don't be fooled by places on Ao Nang's back streets that quote $30 and deliver a windowless box with a ceiling fan.

Do I need to rent a scooter in Krabi?

If you're staying in Ao Nang, no. The beach, restaurants, and tour piers on Ao Nang Beach Road are all walkable. But if you're staying in Klong Muang or Krabi Town, a scooter is genuinely useful. Rental costs around $8-12/day from shops near the Ao Nang roundabout. Just check your travel insurance. most policies don't cover scooter accidents in Thailand without a motorbike licence.

What should I watch out for when booking a Krabi hotel?

Three things. First, 'sea view' in Ao Nang often means you're looking at the bay from 300 metres away. always check the map pin, not just the photo. Second, some resorts on Ao Nang Cliff Road are steep walks from the beach, up to 15 minutes on an incline. Third, Railay hotels add a $3-5 per person longtail surcharge for late-night returns after 11pm. nobody puts that in the listing.

Which Krabi hotels are best for families?

Holiday Inn Resort on Ao Nang Center is the most obvious choice: kids' club, multiple pools, and 5 minutes walk to the beach on flat ground. For a bigger splurge, Phulay Bay at Klong Muang Bay has a dedicated children's program and a beach that's calmer than Ao Nang. Avoid Railay with young kids. longtail boarding at the pier is rough when the swell is up, and there are no pharmacies on the peninsula.

How far is Krabi Town from Ao Nang?

About 25-30 minutes by road. A songthaew (red shared truck) from Maharat Soi 4 in Krabi Town to Ao Nang costs around $1.50 per person but runs infrequently after 6pm. A private taxi is $8-12. Krabi Town is worth a half-day: the Thanon Khong Kha riverside night market on Friday-Sunday evenings is one of the best food markets in southern Thailand.

Is it safe to swim at Ao Nang Beach?

During dry season (November-April), yes. The water is calm and clear, and the beach is lifeguarded during the day. From May to October, red flags go up regularly along Ao Nang Beach Road due to strong currents from the southwest monsoon. Klong Muang Beach stays calmer slightly longer into the shoulder months because of its sheltered position.

Which Krabi hotel has the best rating?

Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve at Klong Muang Bay scores 9.4, the highest of our 10 picks. It's also the priciest at $600-1,500/night. If that's out of range, Tubkaak Boutique Resort on Tubkaak Beach scores 9.0 at $190-280/night and honestly punches well above its price.
