Where to Stay in Port of Spain

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First time in Port of Spain? Start here.

Queen's Park Savannah is your anchor. It's the largest roundabout in the world, surrounded by the Magnificent Seven mansions on the western edge, and it tells you everything about how this city is laid out. Stay within 15 minutes walk of the Savannah and you'll have the city figured out by day two.

Don't book anything on the southern end of Wrightson Road unless you specifically need the waterfront for ferry or cruise connections. The area around South Quay looks convenient on a map but it's noisy, not particularly walkable at night, and you'll constantly be grabbing taxis to get anywhere interesting. Pay a little more and stay in St. Ann's or Maraval.

The honest guide to Port of Spain hotel prices.

Budget means $55-99/night here. That gets you the Hyatt Regency on Wrightson Road or the Sundeck Suites in St. Ann's. Both are clean and functional. Neither is going to surprise you with a rooftop pool, but you won't be disappointed either. Mid-range runs $110-220/night and that's where most travelers should land.

Luxury in Port of Spain peaks at The Brix on Nook Avenue in St. Ann's. At $290-420/night it's the best hotel in the country, full stop. If you can stretch to it, the difference in quality between The Brix and the next tier down is noticeable from the moment you arrive. Don't apologize for spending properly on accommodation in a city where your hotel neighborhood genuinely affects your experience.

When to visit Port of Spain (and when to avoid it).

January to May is peak season. Carnival hits in February or March and the city transforms completely. Bands parade through the streets around the Savannah, Ariapita Avenue fills with fetes every night, and the energy is unlike anything else in the Caribbean. Book 6-9 months ahead if you want Carnival dates. Hotel prices triple.

June through November is the wet season. Rates drop significantly and you'll often have places to yourself. Afternoons bring rain, but mornings are usually clear. It's actually a great time to visit Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range, about 40 minutes from the city. Serious birdwatchers prefer this window.

St. Ann's vs. Maraval: which neighborhood should you pick?

Both neighborhoods sit north of the Savannah and both are safer and greener than downtown. St. Ann's has the edge on accommodation quality. The Brix, The Chancellor, and the Sundeck Suites are all here. You're also 8 minutes walk from the Savannah and close to the restaurants on Rust Street and Ellerslie Plaza.

Maraval is quieter and a touch more residential. The Kapok Hotel on Cotton Hill is the standout there. If you're renting a car and doing day trips to Maracas Beach via the North Coast Road, Maraval actually puts you 5 minutes closer to the highway. St. Ann's wins on walkability. Maraval wins if you're driving.

Getting around Port of Spain without getting ripped off.

Taxis don't use meters. Agree on the fare before you get in. A ride from St. Ann's to Independence Square should cost TTD 40-60 (about $6-9). From the Hilton on Lady Young Road to the city centre is roughly the same. If a driver quotes you TTD 150 for that trip, walk away. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times.

Maxi taxis are the local bus system and they're color-coded by route. Yellow-band maxis cover Port of Spain to the east. They stop along the Priority Bus Route and cost TTD 4-8. It's chaotic if you don't know the system, but it's cheap and fast once you get it. Ask your hotel front desk to point you to the nearest stop.

What to eat near your hotel in Port of Spain.

Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook is the main restaurant strip. It's about 15 minutes walk from St. Ann's or a short taxi from most central hotels. Chaud Cafe, Veni Mangé on Lucknow Street, and Jaffa at the Oval are all within this corridor. Don't eat at your hotel every night when this street exists.

For breakfast, find a doubles vendor. Every neighborhood has one. The stand near the Savannah's north side opens early and the doubles with pepper sauce cost TTD 6-10 each. It's the most honest food in the city and you'll regret spending $25 on eggs at the hotel buffet instead.

Port of Spain's best neighborhoods

Stay in St. Ann's or Maraval if you want character, safety, and walkability. The waterfront strip near Wrightson Road is fine for a night, but you'll be missing the real city.

St. Ann's & Nook Avenue 3 vetted hotels

The city's best neighborhood for stays, full stop.

St. Ann's sits just north of Queen's Park Savannah and it's where Port of Spain's best hotels have quietly stacked up. The Brix, The Chancellor, and the Sundeck Suites are all here within a few blocks of each other. You're 8-10 minutes walk from the Savannah's northern edge and close to the restaurants along Ellerslie Plaza.

Nook Avenue specifically is where the luxury sits. The Brix transformed what a Port of Spain hotel could be, and the street has a calm, residential feel that makes $290-420/night feel earned rather than extravagant. It's also convenient for the Queen's Hall arts venue, just 5 minutes away on foot.

If you want atmosphere without the city-centre grind, this is your neighborhood. Avoid the blocks closer to the Eastern Main Road, which gets noisy with traffic. Stick to the upper St. Ann's area near Perseverance Road and you're in the best pocket of the city.

Best areas Nook Avenue, Perseverance Road, Upper St. Ann's
Price range $75-420/night
Best for Couples, luxury travelers, first-timers
Avoid Blocks near Eastern Main Road. traffic noise
Best months January-May, November-December
Maraval & Cotton Hill 1 vetted hotel

Quieter, greener, and closer to the North Coast road.

Maraval is a residential suburb about 15 minutes drive northwest of Independence Square. It's where locals with money actually live, which tells you something about the neighborhood. The Kapok Hotel on Cotton Hill is the anchor here and it earns its Best Location badge with a view that covers the entire Northern Range.

You're 20 minutes from Maracas Beach via the North Coast Road, which makes Maraval the right base if beach days are a priority. The neighborhood is walkable for groceries and casual dining, but Ariapita Avenue requires a taxi. Budget TTD 50-70 each way.

Rates at the Kapok run $140-195/night. For the quality, the location, and the pool terrace, that's honest value. Don't confuse 'suburban' with 'remote'. Maraval is a 10-minute taxi from anywhere you'd want to be in Port of Spain.

Best areas Cotton Hill, Maraval Road, Long Circular
Price range $140-195/night
Best for Beach day-trippers, couples, nature travelers
Avoid Expecting to walk everywhere. you'll need taxis
Best months December-April
City Centre & Waterfront 3 vetted hotels

Convenient for business and transit, not much else.

The city centre covers Wrightson Road along the waterfront, Cipriani Boulevard, and the area around Independence Square. The Hyatt Regency and Cara Suites are both here. It's genuinely useful if you're in the country for work, catching a ferry to Tobago at the Port of Spain terminal, or arriving on a cruise ship.

The Courtyard by Marriott sits at Invaders Bay, slightly west of the main downtown core. It has a cleaner, quieter feel than the Wrightson Road strip and is 10 minutes from the financial district. For business travelers, this is the sweet spot between convenience and comfort.

Street noise is the main complaint in this area, especially on weekends. Rooms facing Wrightson Road can be loud until midnight. Ask specifically for an upper-floor city-facing room or a courtyard-side room. It makes a meaningful difference.

Best areas Invaders Bay, Cipriani Boulevard, lower Wrightson Road
Price range $55-200/night
Best for Business travelers, cruise passengers, transit stays
Avoid South Quay and Charlotte Street after dark
Best months Year-round for business
Lady Young Road & Belmont 1 vetted hotel

Elevated views, conference facilities, and a city-meets-hills feel.

Lady Young Road winds up into the hills east of the Savannah, and the Hilton Trinidad sits up here with views that genuinely justify the rate. At $130-210/night it's the Most Popular hotel in the city for a reason. Conference groups, visiting heads of state, and Carnival fetes all cycle through this property.

You're about 12 minutes walk down to the Savannah and 20 minutes to the National Museum on Frederick Street. The Belmont neighborhood at the base of the hill is one of Port of Spain's oldest communities, with pan yards and small rum shops that give it a completely different energy to St. Ann's.

The pool area at the Hilton is one of the better hotel pools in the city, and the Lady Young Road location means you're slightly above the noise of the city centre. It's a practical, well-run hotel that handles large groups without losing the plot. For first-timers who want security, recognizable branding, and reliable service, this is the move.

Best areas Lady Young Road, upper Belmont
Price range $130-210/night
Best for Conference travelers, groups, first-timers
Avoid Lower Belmont at night if you don't know the area
Best months January-May
Chaguaramas & Western Peninsula 1 vetted hotel

For the marina crowd and families who want nature on their doorstep.

Chaguaramas is a 25-minute drive west of Port of Spain along the Western Main Road. It's a completely different world from the city: marinas, the Chaguaramas National Park, kayaking, and the kind of slow pace that makes no sense if you're here for business or Carnival. But if you're arriving by boat or traveling with kids, Crews Inn is exceptional.

Crews Inn Hotel and Yachting Centre at $180-240/night is the only real hotel option in the area and it's built around the marina. Breakfast overlooking docked yachts, easy access to the Chaguaramas hiking trails, and a family-friendly pool setup make this a standout for families who'd feel overwhelmed by central Port of Spain.

The tradeoff is isolation. You need a car or you're paying for taxis every time you want dinner beyond the hotel grounds. Expect to spend TTD 120-160 each way to reach Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook. Go in knowing that and it's a great stay. Go in expecting city-centre convenience and you'll be frustrated.

Best areas Chaguaramas marina, Western Main Road
Price range $180-240/night
Best for Families, yachties, nature travelers
Avoid If you don't have a car or a plan for transport
Best months January-May, July-August

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Port of Spain

When to visit Port of Spain and what to pay.

Peak

Carnival Season (Jan-Mar)

Avg hotel: $180-420/nightCrowds: Very HighTemp: 23-31°C

Carnival is the reason Port of Spain exists on most travelers' radars. The two weeks leading up to Carnival Monday and Tuesday around the Savannah are completely electric, with fetes nightly on Ariapita Avenue and bands parading from dawn. Hotels spike to 2-3x normal rates and rooms near Queen's Park Savannah sell out 6-9 months ahead. Book by June the year before or accept whatever's left.

Budget Friendly

Wet Season (Jun-Oct)

Avg hotel: $75-150/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 23-30°C

Rates drop 25-35% across the board and the city is noticeably quieter. Afternoon rain is consistent but rarely all-day, and mornings are often clear. Birdwatching at Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range peaks during this period. If you're on a tight budget and flexible on weather, June through August offers the best value stays in the city.

Warming Up

Holiday Season (Nov-Dec)

Avg hotel: $130-250/nightCrowds: Moderate-HighTemp: 23-31°C

November kicks off the Christmas season in Trinidad, which means parang music, pan concerts near the Savannah, and a general uptick in energy. Hotels start filling up by mid-December as the diaspora returns home for the holidays. Rates at the Hilton on Lady Young Road and The Brix on Nook Avenue tick up noticeably by December 20th. Book at least 6 weeks out.

Booking Tips for Port of Spain

Insider tips for booking hotels in Port of Spain.

Carnival bookings: 6 months minimum

If your travel dates overlap with Carnival Monday or Tuesday, book accommodation by July the year before. Hotels near Queen's Park Savannah fill first, often within days of the Carnival dates being announced. A last-minute search in January will leave you with overpriced guesthouses on the wrong side of town or a 45-minute commute from the action.

Always negotiate taxi fares before you get in

Port of Spain taxis don't use meters. A ride from St. Ann's to Independence Square should cost TTD 40-60 (about $6-9). From Lady Young Road to Ariapita Avenue in Woodbrook is roughly TTD 50-70. Quote the destination, agree the price, then get in. If the driver won't name a price upfront, find another driver.

Ask for an upper-floor room anywhere on Wrightson Road

The Hyatt Regency and hotels on the waterfront strip face direct road noise from trucks using the port access roads. Rooms below the 4th floor on the street side can be genuinely disruptive, especially Thursday through Saturday nights. Request an upper-floor room facing the Gulf of Paria when you book. Most hotels will accommodate this without charge.

The airport taxi rate is fixed. know it before you land

The official licensed taxi from Piarco International Airport to Port of Spain costs TTD 200-250 (about $29-37) for most city-centre and St. Ann's destinations. Drivers near the terminal sometimes quote higher to new arrivals. Walk to the official taxi stand inside the arrivals hall, not the touts outside. It takes 30-45 minutes to reach the city depending on traffic on Churchill Roosevelt Highway.

Avoid South Quay hotels unless you have a specific reason

South Quay and the lower Charlotte Street area look centrally located on a map. In practice, you're adjacent to the ferry terminal loading area, the market, and a stretch of street that gets rough after dark. There's no good restaurant within easy walking distance. Pay $30-50 more per night and stay on Cipriani Boulevard or in St. Ann's instead.

Book the Asa Wright Nature Centre well in advance

If you're planning a birding day trip or overnight to the Asa Wright Nature Centre in the Northern Range, about 40 km east of Port of Spain, book at least 4-6 weeks ahead. It's one of the top birding sites in the Western Hemisphere and it has limited capacity. Your hotel concierge in Port of Spain can arrange a driver for around TTD 300-400 return.

Hotels in Port of Spain — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Port of Spain.

What's the best neighborhood to stay in Port of Spain?

St. Ann's is our top pick. You're close to Queen's Park Savannah, within 10 minutes walk of good restaurants on Rust Street, and the streets actually feel safe at night. Maraval runs a close second, especially if you're driving and want to avoid the city-centre congestion on Wrightson Road.

How much do hotels in Port of Spain cost per night?

Budget stays start around $55-85/night near the waterfront on Wrightson Road. Mid-range options in St. Ann's and Maraval run $130-220/night. If you're going luxury, The Brix on Nook Avenue tops out around $290-420/night, and it earns every dollar.

When is the cheapest time to book a hotel in Port of Spain?

June through October is low season. Expect rates to drop 20-35% compared to Carnival week. Some mid-range hotels on Cipriani Boulevard drop below $130/night during this window. The tradeoff is rain. Trinidad's wet season is real, but it rarely lasts all day.

Is it safe to walk around Port of Spain at night?

Stick to St. Ann's, Maraval, and the immediate area around Queen's Park Savannah and you'll be fine. Avoid walking alone in the downtown core around South Quay and Charlotte Street after dark. Most hotels in Nook Avenue and Lady Young Road areas are completely comfortable at night.

How far is Port of Spain from Piarco International Airport?

Piarco Airport is about 27 km east of the city centre. A taxi takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, and costs roughly TTD 200-250 (about $29-37). There's no direct rail. Book through your hotel for a fixed rate or use a verified PTSC service.

Do I need a car to get around Port of Spain?

Not if you're staying in St. Ann's or Maraval. Most restaurants, the Savannah, and the National Museum on Frederick Street are walkable or a 5-minute taxi ride. If you're planning day trips to Maracas Beach or Chaguaramas, either rent a car or negotiate a half-day rate with a local driver, usually around TTD 300-400.

When is Carnival and how does it affect hotel prices?

Carnival falls in February or early March depending on the year. During the 2-week Carnival window, hotel prices across Port of Spain spike 2-3x normal rates. Rooms near the Savannah, which is the main stage for Dimanche Gras and Monday/Tuesday mas bands, sell out 6-9 months in advance. Book by June the year before if you want decent options.

Are there good hotels near the port or cruise terminal?

The Hyatt Regency on Wrightson Road is literally steps from the cruise terminal, roughly a 3-minute walk. It's the most convenient option for cruise passengers or anyone with early/late ferry connections to Tobago. Rates run $55-85/night, which is honest value for that location.

Which hotels in Port of Spain are best for business travelers?

The Courtyard by Marriott at Invaders Bay is built for business. It's 10 minutes from the financial district on Independence Square and has reliable conference facilities. The Hilton on Lady Young Road is also a strong choice, especially for larger events. Expect to pay $110-210/night at either.

What's the difference between staying in the city centre versus the suburbs?

City centre hotels like Cara Suites on Cipriani Boulevard put you 5 minutes walk from Independence Square and the main government buildings. Suburban stays in Maraval and St. Ann's feel calmer, with better restaurants nearby and less street noise. The price difference is roughly $30-60/night, often in favor of the suburbs.

Is Chaguaramas worth staying in, or should I base myself in Port of Spain?

Chaguaramas makes sense if you're arriving by boat, doing the yachting scene, or spending serious time in the national park. Crews Inn Hotel on the Western Peninsula is genuinely great for families. But for most visitors, it's a 25-minute drive from Port of Spain's restaurants and nightlife, so base yourself in the city and do Chaguaramas as a day trip.

Do Port of Spain hotels include breakfast?

Most mid-range and luxury hotels include breakfast or offer it for $15-25 extra per person. Skip the in-house breakfast at budget options and walk to a doubles vendor near the Savannah instead. You'll spend TTD 10-15 (about $1.50-2) and eat better. It's one of the best $2 meals in the Caribbean.
