Why These Hotels Made Our List

Every hotel earned its spot. Here's exactly why we picked each one.

Hotel del Centro Punta del Este hotel interior
#1

Hotel del Centro Punta del Este

Centro, Punta del Este $55–85/night 7.2/10

This is a no-frills option on Gorlero Avenue, the main commercial strip running through the peninsula. Rooms are compact but clean, and the central location means you can walk to the port and the main beaches easily. Air conditioning works well, which matters during the summer months. Do not expect much in terms of decor or amenities beyond the basics. It gets the job done for travelers who plan to spend most of their time outside.

Hosteria del Lago hotel interior
#2

Hosteria del Lago

Laguna del Sauce, Punta del Este $75–110/night 7.8/10

Set near Laguna del Sauce on the outskirts of the main resort area, this small inn offers a quieter alternative to the beachfront crowds. The property has a relaxed, homey feel with a garden and a small pool. Rooms are modest but comfortable, and the owners are helpful with local recommendations. You will need a car or taxi to reach the main beaches from here. The price is fair and the peaceful setting makes it a good base for travelers who prefer calm over spectacle.

Check Availability
Hotel Arenas hotel interior
#3

Hotel Arenas

Playa Brava, Punta del Este $105–160/night 8.1/10

Hotel Arenas sits just steps from Playa Brava, the rougher ocean-facing beach popular with surfers and morning walkers. The hotel is modest in size but well maintained, with a pool that fills up fast in January. Rooms facing the ocean are worth the small upgrade for the sound and the view. The breakfast is solid with local pastries and fresh juice. Service is friendly and straightforward without being fussy.

Hotel Embajador hotel interior
#4

Hotel Embajador

Peninsula, Punta del Este $120–185/night 8.3/10

Hotel Embajador is one of the older landmarks on the peninsula, located close to the yacht harbor on Calle 2. It has a classic feel without being stuffy, and the staff have clearly worked there for years. The rooftop pool has a good view over the port and the surrounding tower buildings. Rooms are spacious by Punta del Este standards and the beds are comfortable. It fills up quickly during high season so book early if you want a room with water views.

Check Availability
Conrad Punta del Este Resort and Casino hotel interior
#5

Conrad Punta del Este Resort and Casino

Parada 4 Playa Mansa, Punta del Este $140–320/night 8.6/10

The Conrad is the biggest hotel in Punta del Este and sits right on Playa Mansa, the calmer bay-side beach at Parada 4. The casino draws a crowd, and the property has multiple restaurants, a spa, and direct beach access. Rooms vary widely in quality depending on what floor and category you book, so pay attention to the room type. The pool area is large and lively. It is a full resort experience and the price reflects that, but it delivers on scale and amenities.

Check Availability
Hotel Bahia hotel interior
#6

Hotel Bahia

Centro Maldonado, Maldonado $150–200/night 8/10

Hotel Bahia is located in the city of Maldonado, the more residential and practical neighbor to Punta del Este just a few kilometers inland. It caters mainly to business travelers and visitors who want to avoid the premium prices of the resort peninsula. The hotel is clean, well-run, and has good parking, which is a real advantage in this area. Rooms are comfortable and quiet. The location puts you close to local restaurants and markets that tourists often miss.

Check Availability
Enjoy Punta del Este hotel interior
#7

Enjoy Punta del Este

Playa Mansa, Punta del Este $160–280/night 8.4/10

Enjoy is a large resort complex on Playa Mansa with its own casino, pools, and a range of dining options under one roof. It works especially well for families because children have plenty to do on the property without leaving. The beach access is direct and the water on the Mansa side is calm and good for kids. Some of the rooms show their age and could use updating, but the overall experience is solid. Peak season pricing is steep, but shoulder season deals make it much more reasonable.

Check Availability
Mantra Resort Spa and Casino hotel interior
#8

Mantra Resort Spa and Casino

La Barra, Punta del Este $190–290/night 8.7/10

Mantra is set in La Barra, a trendy neighborhood about 10 kilometers east of the peninsula along Ruta Interbalnearia. The area has good restaurants and a more low-key, artistic atmosphere compared to central Punta del Este. The hotel itself has a stylish design, a spa that is genuinely good, and ocean-facing rooms that catch the sunrise. The casino is smaller and more intimate than the Conrad. La Barra attracts a younger, more design-conscious crowd and the hotel fits that tone well.

Check Availability
L'Auberge Punta del Este hotel interior
#9

L'Auberge Punta del Este

Cantegril, Punta del Este $260–420/night 9.1/10

L'Auberge is a long-standing luxury property in the Cantegril residential quarter, surrounded by trees and well away from the noise of the beach strip. It has the feel of an upscale country house, with manicured gardens, a tennis court, and a heated pool. The restaurant is one of the better hotel dining rooms in the city. Rooms are large, well-appointed, and very quiet. This is where Uruguayan and Argentine families with money have been staying for decades, and the service level matches that reputation.

Check Availability
Fasano Las Piedras Punta del Este hotel interior
#10

Fasano Las Piedras Punta del Este

La Barra, Punta del Este $450–900/night 9.4/10

Fasano Las Piedras is a boutique luxury property set on a large private estate outside La Barra, about 15 kilometers from the peninsula. The Brazilian Fasano group designed it as a countryside retreat, with casitas spread across the land rather than a single tower block. The pool, spa, and restaurant are exceptional, and the level of privacy here is something almost no other property in the region offers. Horses, organic gardens, and open sky are the backdrop. It is genuinely expensive but delivers an experience far removed from the typical Punta del Este beach hotel.

Where to Stay in Punta del Este

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

First-timer's guide to picking the right neighborhood

The Peninsula is your default if this is your first trip. It's where Calle Gorlero runs from the port up to the tip, where the lighthouse stands, and you can walk to both Playa Brava and Playa Mansa in under 15 minutes. Hotel Embajador and Hotel Arenas are both here, covering mid-range to solid comfort.

La Barra is a different energy entirely. It's 15-20 minutes east along Ruta 10, and it's where Uruguayans who care about design, food, and quieter beaches actually want to be. Mantra Resort and Fasano Las Piedras are both here. Budget closer to $190-900/night if La Barra is calling your name.

How to avoid the classic Punta del Este booking mistakes

We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: people book a 'beachfront' apartment in Maldonado Centro and arrive to find they're 25 minutes from any actual beach. Always check the parada number. Parada 1 through 10 along Playa Mansa actually means something here. Anything listed vaguely as 'Punta del Este area' probably isn't.

The second trap is booking the cheapest hotel in January. A $60/night room during peak season near the Gorlero strip means thin walls, no air conditioning that works, and every Argentine family in the building at midnight. Spend an extra $40 and sleep. Or just come in April.

The honest guide to Punta del Este's beaches

Playa Brava gets the drama. The Atlantic swells hit hard near Parada 1 and 2, and La Mano sculpture sits right on the sand at the tip of the Peninsula. It's photogenic, the waves are real, and it's where the surf crowd gathers. Hotel Arenas on Playa Brava puts you right in it.

Playa Mansa is quieter and more practical. The water is calmer, kids can actually swim, and the beach clubs near Parada 4 are well-run. The Conrad is right here. Enjoy Punta del Este is a 5-minute walk from the sand at Parada 8. If you have kids or just want to relax, Mansa is your beach.

Punta del Este for couples: where to actually stay

Skip the Peninsula for romance. It's busy, it's loud in January, and the hotel rooms are smaller than they look in photos. La Barra is where a couples trip makes sense. Mantra Resort has proper spa facilities and sits above the dunes between Playa Manantiales and the Arroyo Maldonado.

If budget isn't the issue, Fasano Las Piedras in La Barra is one of the best resort experiences in South America. The casitas are spread across 200 hectares of rolling farmland, and you're a 5-minute drive from the beach. L'Auberge in Cantegril is another serious option, with a classic European feel and a garden that genuinely impresses.

Getting around Punta del Este without losing your mind

The Peninsula is walkable. Full stop. Calle 20, Calle 25, and Rambla Artigas connect everything you need. Outside the Peninsula, taxis and remises are your main option. A taxi from the Conrad on Playa Mansa to La Barra runs about $12-18 USD. Apps like Uber work here too, though availability drops late at night.

Buses run along the Rambla and Gorlero but they're slow in January when every street is gridlocked. Car rentals from Maldonado Airport or agencies on Calle 31 start around $40-55/day. If you're splitting time between La Barra and the Peninsula, a rental for even 2 days saves you taxi costs and gives you flexibility for a day trip to Casapueblo in Punta Ballena.

When to book and how far in advance

January and Carnival week? Book at least 3 months out. The Conrad, Enjoy, and Hotel Embajador fill up fast, and prices climb weekly from November onward. Waiting until December to book a January stay in Punta del Este is a real mistake we've watched people make. You'll end up in a Maldonado apartment wondering where the beach went.

March through May is a totally different story. You can often book 2-3 weeks out and still get decent rates. Shoulder season at L'Auberge or Mantra drops significantly from peak prices. October and November are the sweet spot for budget travelers: the weather is warming up to 18-22°C, and $85-130/night gets you a genuinely good room.

Punta del Este's best neighborhoods

Start with the Peninsula if you want to walk everywhere and feel the real pulse of the city. La Barra is worth the extra pesos if you're here for design, restaurants, and Manantiales beach.

Peninsula & Centro 2 vetted hotels

The most walkable part of Punta del Este. Everything within 15 minutes on foot.

The Peninsula is shaped like a finger pointing into the Atlantic, with Playa Brava on one side and Playa Mansa on the other. You can walk from the lighthouse at the tip down Calle Gorlero to the port in about 20 minutes. Most of the restaurants, shops, and nightlife clubs are concentrated between Calles 20 and 31.

Hotel Embajador sits right in the heart of the Peninsula, and Hotel Arenas faces Playa Brava directly. Between them they cover the $105-185/night range. Hotel del Centro is a short walk away on the Gorlero strip and covers the budget end at $55-85/night.

Centro Punta del Este bleeds into the Peninsula and is more commercial. It's fine for a budget base but don't confuse it with the beachfront. The streets here are busier, noisier in summer, and the views are of traffic, not ocean.

Best areas Peninsula tip, Rambla Artigas, Calle 20-31
Price range $55-185/night
Best for First-timers, walkability, nightlife access
Avoid Rooms on Gorlero itself. street noise is brutal in January
Best months January-February (buzz), March-April (value)
Playa Mansa & Parada 4 2 vetted hotels

Calm water, big resorts, and the Conrad casino. Best for families and resort lovers.

Playa Mansa runs along the western side of Punta del Este, facing the Río de la Plata. The water here is genuinely calm. Parada 4 is the benchmark: that's where the Conrad sits, and the beach in front of it is well-maintained and family-friendly year-round.

The Conrad Punta del Este Resort and Casino is the dominant hotel here at $140-320/night. It's a proper resort: casino, multiple pools, a long beach walk right outside. Enjoy Punta del Este is a few paradas south near Parada 8 and runs $160-280/night. It's more low-key than the Conrad but still has the facilities families need.

This area is less walkable than the Peninsula for restaurants and nightlife. You'll want a taxi or rental to get to Gorlero or La Barra for dinner. But if the beach and resort bubble is what you're after, Parada 4 delivers.

Best areas Parada 4, Parada 8, Rambla de los Argentinos
Price range $140-320/night
Best for Families, resort stays, casino guests
Avoid Walking to restaurants. taxi budget is non-negotiable here
Best months December-February for beach, April-May for quiet resort rates
La Barra & Manantiales 2 vetted hotels

Design hotels, serious restaurants, and the best beach vibe east of the Peninsula.

La Barra starts just over the wobbly bridge on Ruta 10, about 8km east of the Peninsula. It has its own personality: surf shops, boutique stores, and restaurants that actually care about food. Manantiales beach here is wilder and more beautiful than anything on Playa Mansa.

Mantra Resort Spa and Casino at $190-290/night is a genuinely romantic property above the dunes. Fasano Las Piedras at $450-900/night is in a different category entirely: a Brazilian luxury brand that built casitas on a 200-hectare estate and made one of the best resort experiences in the region. Both are worth their prices. Neither apologizes for them.

La Barra gets crowded in January and the Ruta 10 traffic can back up badly near the bridge. But come in March or April and it's serene. The food scene here, particularly along the main strip before the bridge, is strong enough to justify the 15-minute taxi from the Peninsula.

Best areas Manantiales, La Barra main strip, Arroyo Maldonado
Price range $190-900/night
Best for Couples, luxury travelers, food lovers
Avoid Peak January. bridge traffic is a nightmare and rates are highest
Best months March-May and November-December
Cantegril & Laguna del Sauce 2 vetted hotels

Quieter, greener, and less crowded. A different side of Punta del Este most tourists skip.

Cantegril is a residential neighborhood 10-15 minutes from the Peninsula by car. It's leafy, calm, and home to L'Auberge Punta del Este, one of the best hotels in Uruguay full stop. The neighborhood itself feels more like a country estate than a beach resort, which is exactly the point.

Laguna del Sauce is further west, near Maldonado Airport. Hosteria del Lago sits on the lake here at $75-110/night. It's genuinely quiet and the sunsets over the lagoon are excellent. But you're 25-30 minutes from Playa Mansa and you'll absolutely need a car.

These neighborhoods reward guests who want space and calm over beach access and nightlife. L'Auberge at $260-420/night has gardens, a tennis club feel, and European service that stands out in Punta del Este's generally casual hotel scene.

Best areas Cantegril residential streets, Laguna del Sauce waterfront
Price range $75-420/night
Best for Couples, longer stays, guests wanting quiet over proximity
Avoid Coming without a car. public transport here is minimal
Best months October-April
Maldonado Centro 1 vetted hotel

The real city next door. Less glamour, more substance, and noticeably cheaper.

Maldonado is the actual capital of the department and sits right next to Punta del Este. Most tourists ignore it, which is a mistake. The streets around Plaza San Fernando and Calle Sarandí are authentic in a way the tourist strip on Gorlero isn't.

Hotel Bahia at $150-200/night is rated 8.0 and earns the Best Value badge honestly. You're getting a solid hotel in a real Uruguayan city, and Playa Mansa is about 15 minutes by taxi. The price difference between here and a comparable room on the Peninsula is often $50-80/night.

Maldonado is particularly good in shoulder season. From April through October, the city feels lived-in and genuine, with local restaurants and markets that don't double their prices the moment a tourist walks in.

Best areas Plaza San Fernando, Calle Sarandí, Centro Maldonado
Price range $150-200/night
Best for Value seekers, longer stays, travelers who like a real city base
Avoid If beach walking distance matters. it doesn't have it
Best months March-November for quiet value

Best Areas by Vibe

Tell us how you travel and we'll point you to the right part of Punta del Este.

Romantic

La Barra is the call for couples. Mantra Resort above the Manantiales dunes and Fasano Las Piedras on its 200-hectare estate are both built for exactly this, with spa access, private beach, and zero kids-club noise.

Culture

Cantegril and the Peninsula old town hold the most cultural weight. Casapueblo in nearby Punta Ballena, 20 minutes west on Ruta 10, is the most iconic artistic landmark in all of Uruguay and worth the half-day trip.

Family

Playa Mansa around Parada 4 and Parada 8 is purpose-built for families. Calm water, Enjoy Punta del Este within walking distance, and the Conrad's pools and beach club right there make this the obvious choice.

Budget

Centro Punta del Este and Maldonado are where your $55-85/night goes furthest. Hotel del Centro on Gorlero and Hosteria del Lago near the airport both deliver solid stays without the premium that comes with a Playa Brava address.

Beach

Playa Brava on the Peninsula is the most dramatic. Hotel Arenas puts you 2 minutes walk from La Mano sculpture and the Atlantic surf. If you want calm swimming, Parada 4 on Playa Mansa is 8 minutes walk from the Conrad.

Foodie

La Barra's main strip before the wobbly bridge has the best restaurant concentration in the region. Parador La Huella just east of La Barra in José Ignacio is the best-known table in Uruguay and worth the 20-minute drive from any hotel.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

When to Visit Punta del Este

When to visit Punta del Este and what to pay.

Peak

Summer (December-February)

Avg hotel: $140-320/nightCrowds: HighTemp: 26-32°C

This is when Punta del Este becomes a different city. Argentine and Brazilian tourists flood in, Gorlero becomes a pedestrian party, and Playa Brava is packed by 10am. Carnival week in late January is the absolute peak: Peninsula hotels run $185-320/night and availability at the Conrad or Enjoy often disappears by October. Book 3 months ahead or skip it.

Budget Friendly

Winter (June-August)

Avg hotel: $55-120/nightCrowds: LowTemp: 8-14°C

It's cold and most beach clubs close. But the Peninsula doesn't entirely shut down: some restaurants stay open, the Conrad runs year-round, and Maldonado Centro is perfectly normal. Rates at mid-range Peninsula hotels drop to $85-120/night. Good for a city break if beaches aren't the point.

Warming Up

Spring (September-November)

Avg hotel: $75-150/nightCrowds: ModerateTemp: 14-22°C

October and November are underrated. Temperatures climb to 18-22°C, the beach clubs start reopening, and prices are still well below peak. Semana de Turismo in early November brings a small domestic crowd, but it's nothing like January. L'Auberge and Mantra both drop rates significantly in this window, making November a genuine sweet spot for luxury travel.

Booking Tips for Punta del Este

Insider tips for booking hotels in Punta del Este.

Book the Peninsula by October for January stays

Hotels on the Peninsula and Playa Mansa raise rates weekly from October onward. Hotel Embajador and the Conrad both show availability gaps by early December for January peak. If you're visiting during Carnival week in late January, 3 months advance is not excessive. We've seen people book in late December for mid-January and pay $50-80 more per night than they would have in October.

Check the parada number, not just the neighborhood name

Parada numbers run along Playa Mansa from the Peninsula outward. Parada 1 is near the tip of the Peninsula. Parada 4 is the Conrad's stretch of beach. Parada 10 is significantly further and less convenient without a car. Any hotel listing that says 'Playa Mansa' without specifying a parada number is hiding something. Ask before booking.

Ruta 10 traffic in January is genuinely bad

If you're staying in La Barra or east of the bridge, budget 30-45 minutes for a taxi to the Peninsula on weekend afternoons in January. What's normally a 15-minute drive becomes a crawl past the bridge. Fasano and Mantra guests often just stay put for dinner, which is fine since both properties have solid restaurants. But if you want flexibility, a car rental for $45-55/day from Maldonado Airport changes your whole trip.

Maldonado airport beats Montevideo for La Barra stays

Aeropuerto de Laguna del Sauce (PDU) is 15 minutes from La Barra and 20 minutes from the Peninsula. Flying into Montevideo and then taking a 2-hour bus is fine for budget travel, but if you're splitting the cost of a $450/night room at Fasano, a direct flight into Maldonado is worth whatever it costs. LATAM and Aerolíneas Argentinas both serve it seasonally.

March is the real insider move

We keep saying it because it keeps being true. March in Punta del Este means 22-26°C water temperature, empty stretches of Playa Brava, open restaurants along La Barra, and hotel rates that are 30-40% below their January peaks. Semana de Carnaval ends in February and the city genuinely exhales. It's the best version of Punta del Este and most tourists miss it entirely.

La Huella and Freddo don't take last-minute reservations in peak season

Parador La Huella in José Ignacio, 25 minutes east on Ruta 10, is the most in-demand table in Uruguay from December through February. Book it before you book your hotel, not after. Same goes for the better restaurants along La Barra's strip near Calle 12 and the bridge. Shoulder season is different: March through May you can usually walk in, but call ahead to confirm.

Hotels in Punta del Este — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking hotels in Punta del Este.

What's the best area to stay in Punta del Este?

The Peninsula is the most walkable. You're within 10 minutes of Playa Brava, the port, and Rambla Artigas on foot. La Barra suits you better if nightlife and design restaurants are the priority, though you'll need a taxi or rental car for everything.

When is the best time to visit Punta del Este?

January and February are peak season. The city triples in population, hotels on the Peninsula hit $185-320/night, and Parada 1 through Parada 10 along Playa Mansa are packed. March is our honest recommendation: 26-28°C, crowds gone, prices drop 30-40%.

How much does a hotel in Punta del Este cost per night?

Budget options near Centro start at $55-85/night. Mid-range hotels on Playa Brava or the Peninsula run $105-185/night. Luxury properties in La Barra and Cantegril start at $260/night and go well past $900/night at Fasano Las Piedras.

Is Punta del Este worth visiting outside of summer?

Yes, and honestly it's better. In April and May, Playa Mansa is calm, Rambla de los Argentinos is quiet, and you can get a table at Parador La Huella without a reservation. Hotel rates drop by half compared to January peaks.

How do I get from Montevideo to Punta del Este?

COT and Copsa buses run from Tres Cruces bus terminal in Montevideo to Punta del Este terminal on Calle Gorlero roughly every 30-60 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours and costs around $8-12 USD. A private transfer runs $60-90 depending on the company.

Is the Peninsula or Playa Mansa better for families?

Playa Mansa wins for families. The water is calm, there are no strong currents, and Parada 4 near the Conrad has decent amenities. The Peninsula is great for adults but the beach access requires navigating narrow streets off Calle 20 or Calle 25.

What neighborhoods should I avoid in Punta del Este?

Avoid booking anything marketed as 'central Punta del Este' that's actually in the commercial strip along Gorlero without checking the exact address. Some hotels here are sandwiched between bus stops and fast-food joints with no beach access within a 15-minute walk. Also skip the outskirts toward Maldonado proper unless you have a car.

Is La Barra worth the higher prices?

If you're staying 4+ nights and want Manantiales beach, good restaurants on Ruta 10, and a more relaxed crowd, yes. But La Barra is a 15-20 minute taxi ride from the Peninsula, and that adds up fast. Mantra Resort and Fasano are genuinely worth it for the setting alone.

Do I need a car in Punta del Este?

Not if you're staying on the Peninsula or near Parada 4 on Playa Mansa. Those areas are walkable. If you're in La Barra, Laguna del Sauce, or Cantegril, a rental car makes life much easier and costs around $40-60/day from agencies at the local airport.

What's the deal with Playa Brava vs Playa Mansa?

Playa Brava faces the Atlantic, so it's windier and rougher. It's where La Mano sculpture is, and the waves attract surfers near Parada 2. Playa Mansa faces the Río de la Plata estuary, so the water is calmer and warmer. Most families and casual swimmers prefer Mansa.

Are there good budget hotels in Punta del Este?

Yes, but you have to look past the flashy listings. Hotel del Centro near Gorlero starts at $55/night and puts you 12 minutes walk from both beaches. Don't expect a pool or spa at that price, but the location is solid and the rooms are clean.

When do hotel prices peak in Punta del Este?

Carnival week in January and the first two weeks of February are the most expensive. Some Peninsula hotels jump 60-80% above their shoulder-season rates during these weeks. Semana Santa in March or April is a secondary spike, especially for Playa Mansa hotels near the Conrad.
