Yemen mainland is under active conflict. Socotra Island, accessible via Abu Dhabi, is one of the world's most biodiverse places and genuinely visitable. We report honestly on both. These 10 made the cut.

Explore Yemen by city

We cover 2 destinations across Yemen. Pick a city for a dedicated hotel guide with neighborhoods, seasonal tips, and our vetted picks.

How We Vetted These Hotels

Every hotel on this list went through the same evaluation. Here's exactly how we score them.

We reviewed hotels across Socotra, Sana'a, Aden, Marib, Mukalla, and Seiyun. Operational status and honest security assessment were the first filter.

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Hotels that score below 8.0 don't make our list. Hotels can't pay for placement. We update scores every quarter based on new reviews. If a hotel's quality drops, it gets removed. Read more about our approach on the about page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in Yemen

Straight answers from our team after reviewing hotels across Yemen.

Is Yemen safe to visit?

The mainland is not safe for most travelers. The civil war between the Houthi-controlled north (including Sana'a) and the internationally recognized government in the south has continued since 2015. Aden and Mukalla are more accessible but still risky. Socotra Island in the Arabian Sea is the main exception: it has been largely outside the conflict and is genuinely accessible via Abu Dhabi.

How do I get to Socotra Island?

Yemenia Airways flies Abu Dhabi to Socotra (Hadibo airport) twice weekly. The flight takes 2 hours and costs $200-350 return. You also need a Yemeni visa which can be arranged through travel agencies in the UAE. Most visitors spend 5-10 days on Socotra. No visa on arrival. Book through specialized Socotra tour operators who handle logistics from Abu Dhabi.

What makes Socotra Island special?

Socotra is nicknamed the Galapagos of the Arabian Sea. 37% of its plant species, 90% of its reptile species, and all of its land bird species exist nowhere else on earth. The dragon blood tree, with its distinctive umbrella canopy, grows here and nowhere else in significant numbers. Dihamri Marine Protected Area has some of the clearest water in the Arabian Sea with visibility up to 30 meters.

Where do I stay on Socotra?

Socotra Ecolodge ($180-240/night) near Hadibo is the main organized accommodation with guided tours included. Basic guesthouses in Hadibo town run $40-80/night. Most serious nature trips use camping with a guide for access to the Dixam Plateau (dragon blood trees) and Detwah Lagoon (flamingos). No luxury hotels exist. The Ecolodge is the best balance of comfort and access.

What is the Sana'a Old City like?

Sana'a Old City is one of the world's most photogenic ancient urban centers. The tower houses, decorated with white geometric patterns, some 8-stories tall and over 2,500 years old, are unlike anything else in the Arab world. UNESCO inscribed it in 1986. The Great Mosque of Sana'a, one of the oldest in the world, is at its center. As of 2024 the city is under Houthi control and not accessible to most foreign travelers.

What is Wadi Hadramawt?

Wadi Hadramawt in eastern Yemen is one of the most dramatic canyon systems in the Arabian Peninsula, 160 km long and 500m deep. Ancient mud-brick cities like Shibam (the Manhattan of the desert, UN World Heritage Site) rise 30 meters from the canyon floor. Seiyun's Palace Museum and the Hadramout Hotel ($140-190) are the base. This area in the Hadramawt region has been in the internationally recognized government zone and slightly more accessible.

Can I get to Aden?

Aden has flights from Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Cairo. The city is the de facto capital of the internationally recognized government. Aden Hotel ($100-150) and Gold Mohur Beach Resort ($160-230) are operational. Gold Mohur Beach itself was the colonial-era British resort beach. The port city has Crater (the old quarter), the Tanks of Aden (ancient Himyarite water cisterns), and the Aden Military Museum. Security requires local knowledge.

What are the Marib ruins?

Marib was the capital of the ancient Sabaean kingdom, believed to be the origin of the Queen of Sheba. The Great Dam of Marib (7th century BC) irrigated 300,000 people. The Awam Temple (Moon Temple) has columns 12 meters tall still standing. Queen of Sheba Hotel ($140-200) and Golden Marib Hotel ($100-145) are in Marib. The area has significant military activity given its strategic importance in the civil war. Check advisories.

What visa do I need for Yemen?

Yemen requires a visa for most nationalities. For Socotra-only travel, visas can be arranged through tour operators in the UAE who have established channels with Yemeni authorities. For mainland Yemen, visas are difficult to obtain and travel advisories from most Western governments advise against all travel. Journalists and humanitarian workers operate on special clearances arranged through their organizations.

What is the situation in southern Yemen?

Southern Yemen (Aden, Mukalla, Hadramawt, Socotra) is under control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and the internationally recognized government. It is distinct from the Houthi-controlled north. Aden, Mukalla ($45-190/night), and Seiyun have functioning hotels and limited international access. Al-Hawta Hotel in Mukalla and Hadramout Hotel in Seiyun are operational. Still risky but more accessible than the north.

What is the best time to visit Socotra?

November to April is the prime season. The monsoon (June to September) makes Socotra completely inaccessible: the airport closes and the sea is too rough. Flights stop entirely from May to October. The best months are November, December, January, and February: clear skies, calm seas, temperatures of 25-30C. Book well ahead as Yemenia flights fill up.

What wildlife can I see on Socotra?

Dragon blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) are the signature. Dihamri Marine Protected Area has whale sharks, manta rays, and 730 species of fish. Flamingos gather at Detwah Lagoon, 45 minutes west of Hadibo. 140 bird species including 10 endemics.
