Where to Stay in Lusaka

The neighborhood you pick matters more than the hotel.

Kabulonga: the neighbourhood that actually makes sense

Kabulonga is where smart travellers base themselves. Tree-lined streets, independent restaurants on Sable Road, and 10 minutes by car to both Manda Hill and East Park Mall. It doesn't have the chaos of Cairo Road, and that's the point.

Latitude 15 Hotel here is one of Lusaka's best-kept secrets. The pool area alone is worth the $110-160/night rate. And if you want a cheaper entry to the same neighbourhood, Lusaka Backpackers sits just down the road for $55-90/night.

Getting around Lusaka without losing your mind

There's no metro. Minibuses (called combis) run set routes for about 5-8 ZMW per trip, but they're chaotic if you don't know the system. Taxis through Ulendo Cabs or inDriver are your best bet: $5-12 for most city trips, $20-35 to the airport.

The drive between Kabulonga and Arcades takes 10-15 minutes in normal traffic. Between Ridgeway and City Centre, budget 20 minutes. Avoid Great East Road between 7-9am and 4-7pm. it backs up badly near the Arcades roundabout.

What to eat and where to eat it

Lusaka's food scene is better than its reputation. Head to Foxdale Court for Indian food at Raj's, or try Mint Café on Addis Ababa Drive for decent lunches. The Sunday Market near Kabulonga Shopping Centre has some of the best local produce and street food in the city.

Avoid the tourist-trap buffets near Taj Pamodzi unless someone else is paying. For a proper Zambian meal. nshima, grilled chicken, rape relish. find a local spot near Kamwala Market. You'll spend 50-80 ZMW and eat better than most hotel restaurants.

Lusaka as a safari staging post

Most people flying into Zambia land at Kenneth Kaunda International and then head north to South Luangwa or west to Kafue. If you're transiting, don't just book any airport-adjacent guesthouse. Radisson Blu in Lusaka East is 20 minutes from the terminal and actually worth one night at $280-400/night before a long bush drive.

For a softer intro to wildlife before your main safari, Lilayi Lodge on Lilayi Road has zebra, giraffe, and warthog on the property. It's a 15-minute drive from the city and a genuinely smart first night for any wildlife trip.

Lusaka's rainy season: what they don't tell you

November through April is the rainy season, and Lusaka gets up to 800mm of rainfall concentrated in December and January. Roads flood fast, especially off the main tarmac in areas like Ng'ombe and Chelston. Some guesthouses near the bus stations have serious drainage problems.

The upside: hotel prices drop 15-25% in the wet months, and the city is genuinely green and lush. If you're not doing bush activities and you want value, January and February offer the best rates. Just stay on the main roads and keep a 4WD option open.

Areas to skip and why

Avoid booking anything near Soweto Market or the Kulima Tower bus terminus. The area is high-traffic and high-theft, and several budget guesthouses there have serious safety issues. The price looks right but the risk isn't worth it.

Chelston and parts of Bauleni have some cheap options that look decent online. But without a car, you're stuck. there are no decent restaurants within walking distance and shared taxis add $8-12 to every trip. Kabulonga or Longacres give you access to the city without the hassle.

Lusaka's best neighborhoods

Kabulonga and Longacres punch hardest for value and access. If you want the easiest base for restaurants, embassies, and the airport run, start there.

Kabulonga & Longacres 3 vetted hotels

Lusaka's best all-round base for every type of traveller.

Kabulonga is where the expat community settled for a reason. Wide roads, actual trees, and you're 10 minutes from Manda Hill on Nangwenya Road. It doesn't feel like a capital city, which is exactly why people like it.

Longacres sits just south of the embassy belt on Haile Selassie Avenue. Mint Hotel here has the best location in the city for anyone needing embassy access or quick links to the Cairo Road business district, 15 minutes north.

Combined, these two neighbourhoods hold 3 of our top 10 picks across a price range of $55-210/night. You'll find a decent meal, a safe walk to a coffee shop, and reliable taxis within 5 minutes.

This region runs $140-230/night, and the facilities match the price. Both hotels have proper conference facilities and 24-hour security, which matters in Lusaka more than most capitals.

Best areas Ridgeway, Arcades
Price range $140-230/night

Avoid Side streets south of Nationalist Road after dark
Best months April-September

Lilayi sits 15 km south, down Lilayi Road past the agricultural research station. Lilayi Lodge is in a different world entirely. game fencing, small antelope, and birdsong instead of Cairo Road traffic. At $260-360/night it's one of Lusaka's finest experiences.

The two are a sharp contrast but both make sense depending on your purpose. City Centre for meetings and connections. Lilayi for romance or recovery after a long flight.

Best areas Church Road (City Centre), Lilayi Road (Lilayi)
Price range $130-360/night
Best for Business meetings, romantic stays, wildlife intro
Avoid Cairo Road on foot after 8pm
Best months June-September

Airport access, luxury rooms, and the best family escape in the region.

Chisamba is 45 km north of Lusaka on the Great North Road, technically outside the city, but Fringilla Lodge earns its place on this list. It's a working farm and small game reserve, and families with kids will find it hard to leave.

This region suits two very different travellers: the business executive who wants the best room in the city, and the family that wants animals, space, and a garden. Both get value for money.

Best areas Lusaka East, Chisamba
Price range $180-400/night
Best for Luxury stays, airport transits, families with kids
Avoid Budget guesthouses along Great East Road. inconsistent quality
Best months May-October
Roma 1 vetted hotel

Lusaka's budget traveller hub with a genuinely social scene.

Roma is a mixed residential neighbourhood south of the City Centre, between Kafue Road and Los Angeles Boulevard. It's not glamorous, but Chachacha Backpackers has made it a legitimate stop on the southern Africa backpacker circuit.

At $45-75/night it's the most affordable vetted option in the city. You're 20 minutes by combi from Cairo Road and 15 minutes from Kabwata Cultural Village, where weekend craft markets draw both locals and travellers.

Don't expect polished. Expect useful. This is where you meet people who've just come from Victoria Falls or are heading to South Luangwa, and that exchange is worth something.

Best areas Roma, near Los Angeles Boulevard
Price range $45-75/night
Best for Backpackers, budget travellers, solo travellers
Avoid Unmarked guesthouses without reviews near Chilenje South
Best months May-August

40%

Location Quality

Is the neighborhood walkable? Are restaurants, shops, and attractions within 10 minutes on foot? How does it feel after dark? We evaluate safety, public transport access, and whether the area has genuine local character or just tourist traps. A hotel in the wrong neighborhood ruins a trip. That's why location carries the most weight.

30%

Value for Money

We compare what you pay against what you get. A €150 hotel with a great location, clean rooms, and helpful staff can outscore a €500 hotel with fancy amenities in a bad area. We factor in seasonal pricing, cancellation policies, and hidden costs like tourist tax and breakfast surcharges. The goal is finding the best ratio, not the lowest price.

30%

Guest Experience

We analyze thousands of verified guest reviews across multiple platforms, looking for patterns rather than individual complaints. Consistent praise for cleanliness, staff, and room quality counts. We also assess the intangibles: does the hotel have character? Would you recommend it to a friend? A soul-less chain hotel with perfect facilities still loses to a well-run boutique with personality.

Booking Tips for Lusaka

Insider tips for booking hotels in Lusaka.

Book Lilayi Lodge on weeknights only

Lilayi Lodge on Lilayi Road fills up fast on Friday and Saturday nights with Lusaka residents looking to escape. If you're visiting from outside Zambia and want the full romantic experience without the weekend crowd, book Sunday-Thursday. You'll also find rates 10-15% lower mid-week.

Pre-arrange your airport transfer

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is 26 km from Kabulonga along Great East Road. Walk-up taxis at the terminal charge $30-45. Hotels like Radisson Blu and Southern Sun Ridgeway both offer fixed-rate pickups for $20-25. Book it through your hotel before you land. the airport taxi touts are persistent.

Get KAZA UniVisa online before arrival

The KAZA UniVisa costs $50 and covers both Zambia and Zimbabwe, which is useful if you're doing a Victoria Falls trip from Livingstone. Apply at evisa.gov.zm before you fly. The airport queue for on-arrival visas can hit 45-60 minutes during peak season, especially on Friday morning arrivals.

Avoid peak Lusaka Agricultural Show week

The Lusaka Agricultural and Commercial Show runs in late July at the Showgrounds off Great East Road. It's a big deal locally and hotel prices across Kabulonga, Arcades, and Ridgeway spike 25-40% that week. Book months ahead or skip that week entirely if you're not attending the show specifically.

Use inDriver over street taxis

Street taxis in Lusaka have no meters and the opening price is rarely the final price. Use inDriver or Ulendo Cabs on your phone instead. you'll pay $5-12 for most cross-city trips versus $15-25 if you negotiate from scratch on Cairo Road. Both apps work reliably in Kabulonga, Longacres, and Ridgeway.

Don't pay for breakfast at Taj Pamodzi

Taj Pamodzi charges $20-25 for the breakfast buffet, which is fine but not special. Walk 8 minutes north to the café strip near the Cairo Road end of Addis Ababa Drive and you'll eat better for under $8. Save the Taj Pamodzi restaurant budget for dinner, where the kitchen actually earns it.
